SmartPolician: I consider the NE and NW as the regions where people ride on the popularity of presidential candidates to win elections. We saw a lot of that in 2015.
In the South, it's a different ballgame. That's because people in the South are a bit more educated and enlightened and they vote for candidates, not parties.
I don't know who else is coming out in Eti-Osa for House of Representatives because I am definitely going to vote Olubankole Wellington aka Banky W of the PDP. People ride of the popularity of certain people to get to power and this happen in all parts of the world. |

Politics › Re: I Am Very Confident That Tinubu Cannot Win This Election. by oyatz(m): 9:33pm On Jan 01, 2023 |
MikeofAfrica: Both of us are saying the same thing.
Buhari left ANPP in 2010 to form CPC because the northern stakeholders in ANPP wanted to field a sitting Governor in 2011 election.
Hence Buhari had no Governor or senator with him in CPC before 2011 election. The notheren political stakeholders were either in PDP for Jonathan or ANPP for Shekarau.
However, this did not stop Buhari from winning the core northern states.
Hence if Atiku can do his homework very well, he can also win the core northern states even though the stakeholders are with Tinubu. You wrongly assumed that Buhari was the only politician in the CPC. There were many politicians who moved with him into the CPC and if not for in-fighting and a particular mistake on the part of Buhari, CPC would have won at least 5 State Governorship instead of one. The particular mistake= Without acceptable register of party members, adequate preparations and experience, CPC adopted the direct primaries to select it's candidates. Several 'corrupt' and disgruntled ex-PDP members who recently joined the CPC contested and won most of the party's tickets, sidelining members of The Buhari Organization (TBO), the fundamental members of the party. This caused acrimony and many post-primary litigations. |

Politics › Re: I Am Very Confident That Tinubu Cannot Win This Election. by oyatz(m): 12:31pm On Jan 01, 2023 |
MikeofAfrica: Your Statistics are right. However the reason OBJ and Jonathan won in 2003 and 2011 is the block votes that they got in SE/SS. Both of them had over 90% of the votes in the two regions. Moreover, they had the power of imcumbency which helped them to win the NC and penetrate the NW/ NE.
Atiku would have also defeat Buhari in 2019 if he had been able to get 40% in NE/NW.
However in the case of Tinubu, his main opponent in NW/NE, Atiku, is also more popular than him in SE/SS. The SW which is Tinubu's stronghold cannot deliver the kind of block votes that SE/SS delivered to OBJ and Jonathan in 2003 and 2011.
Hence for Tinubu to win, he has to stop Atiku from winning either NW or NE and also hope that Obi stops Atiku from winning SS. Too much assumptions! Political parties contest and win elections in Nigeria. The election is not just about Tinubu, Atiku, Peter Obi and Kwankwanso but there are several other politicians contesting on the same parties with them who will influence the pendulum of victory. Right now, the opposition is fragmented into PDP (with Wike's G-5 working for the APC), LP and NNPP. Only a united opposition can defeat the ruling APC. |
Politics › Re: I Am Very Confident That Tinubu Cannot Win This Election. by oyatz(m): 12:25pm On Jan 01, 2023 |
MikeofAfrica: In 2011, the northern stakeholders agreed to support Jonathan for one term ( 2011-2015). There refusal to support Buhari made him to leave ANPP and form CPC.
However, the stakeholders could not convince the northern electorates to vote Jonathan over Buhari.
Remember the PDP northern stakeholders in core northern states like Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa and Bauchi could not also convince their people to vote OBJ over Buhari in 2003. You are mixing these issues up. 1) The defunct ANPP was the household party in the extreme North of Nigeria under whose platform Buhari ran for the 2003 and 2007 elections. 2) In 2010, Buhari had left the party to form CPC because of the plots by the leadership of the ANPP not to field him. 3) 2011 election: PDP stakeholders agreed to support Jonathan for one term. 4) The CPC stakeholders coupled with the prevailing perception that it was the turn of the North worked for Buhari's success in 12 States in the North. No two elections are exactly alike. |
