Afrikaners and English whites secretly detest one another but they try hard to get along. All I can say is that Afrikaners are ultra proud of their language and African heritage. I consider them to be truly African unlike their English counterparts.

many of these companies invent things that most people use all over the world. Sony invents the PS4 in Japan and then they will manufacture in China and you will buy it in Nigeria. Most of the profit will go to Japan and China will make a small profit per unit made and by making many units they will get as much money as Japan.

Julius Malema might be surprising you with his militant and radical utterances that excite the youth and dismay those with limited knowledge but to South Africans who have been exposed to the even more radical likes of Peter Mokaba, Malusi Gigaba, Fikile Mbalula we know that Malema is just working hard to keep up with the trend set by his predecessors. In fact Malema is a copycat of Peter Mokaba who used to campaign for Boers and farmers to be killed in the early 90s, this of cause got Mokaba in hot waters with Mandela who was trying to stabilize the country at that time. Nevertheless, he too made it into Mandela's cabinet.

nolonthing I've educated you enough for now, it's up to you to upgrade your understanding by researching any of those three previous leaders of the ANCYL. Once you know about them, you will then realise that Julius Malema might be a radical person who is new to you but his kind is old to South Aficans. I suggest you focus on Fikile Mbalula who came before Malema and was a regular critic of Mbeki and his government and he also helped to get rid of Mbeki.

These sort of things were people come and go happen all the time and life continues. Just two weeks ago Zuma fired two of his corrupt cabinet ministers: Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde who signed dodgy deals and Sicelo Shiceka who visited a girlfriend in Switzerland using state funds. Zuma also suspended the police chief Bheki Cele who also engaged in a dodgy deal and our previous police chief Jackie Selebi has already been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for corruption and was last week appealing his conviction.

Malema will appeal the suspension which will go on for a few months after which he will fizzle out and be replaced by another firebrand ANCYL leader. We are used to these youth league leaders who go around the country and excite the youth with their rhetoric. Malema's predecessor Fikile Mbalula who is now the minister of sports was just like Julius, going all over the country to speak for what he thought was right for the youth and also speak against the government at times. Fikile's youth league predecessor Malusi Gigaba who is now the minister of public enterprises was as much of a firebrand as the other two during his time in the 90s. So please know that South Africans are used to ANC Youth League leaders who talk too much.

I made that comment in relation to the article which compares optimistic and pessimistic countries. It's easy to be happy and optimistic when you are poor and have nothing to worry about. All you do is live and hope for the best. But when you live a "successful" life, you have more responsibilities more worries and anxieties which then means that your success is more likely to turn you into an pessimist. That's because as the world and its functions change it threatens to disrupt your success status or your accustomed way of life therefore you expect things to always go wrong. Example is the lifting of the fuel subsidy, it threatens to disrupt the "successful" way of life of a small portion of the Nigerian population and it is these comparatively successful Nigerians who are opening and contributing to pessimistic threads on this forum. You are more likely to find a higher proportion of Nigerian pessimists on Victoria Island than the mainland which shows that where there is success, there is also pessimism and where there is poverty, there is also happiness and optimism.

Joburg has invested about R250-million on developing its landfill sites so that the stored methane gas can be tapped and used to generate renewable power for the City's grid.

THE methane gas caused by the degradation of bio-organic compounds at the city s landfill sites will now be drilled out and used to generate electricity for Joburg s power grid, thanks to a partnership between the City and a private consortium.

The project, which is expected to be fully operational by 2012, is called the Landfill Gas to Energy Clean Development Mechanism Project and is the first of its kind in Africa and another first for Joburg.

Launching the project on 22 September, Joburg s portfolio head of environment and infrastructure services, Roslynn Greeff, said it was aimed at mitigating harmful methane and other greenhouse gases being emitted from the landfills.

The City has made a capital investment of about R200-million on landfills and about 50-million on the Robinson Deep Landfill Site in Turfontein for the project to come to fruition.

It is the first of five projects to be developed across all landfill sites in the city. Work at the Marie Louise landfill is in progress and by June 2012 the Ennerdale, Linbro Park and Goudkoppies landfill sites would be complete.

Generating electricity

The utilisation of gas to generate electricity only commences once a landfill site has reached a reasonable depth and the potential for the ingress of oxygen has been reduced.

Greeff said Joburg s landfill sites were at the depth and are adversely affecting the environment and causing bad odours, which affect the quality of life of communities living near the landfill sites .

Engineers have designed and drilled boreholes deep into the Robinson Deep Landfill Site and pipes have been inserted into the boreholes to extract the methane gas. Each borehole is however capped off at the wellhead and is built 30 to 40 meters apart.

The gas is then fed into the engine unit to achieve an ideal gas mixture and is used to generate renewable power. The green electricity is available for use on site and is fed into the City s grid which distributes it to the entire local network.

Greeff said the extraction and destruction of greenhouse gases had provided the City with an opportunity to receive revenue from the generation of emission reductions certificates, trade in carbon credits and generate renewable energy.

The project supports South Africa s commitments to the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC), which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and implement Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects.

There are many businesses that have no interest in government contracts or tenders and so BEE doesn't apply to them. When government decides to build anything or wants any kind of service from industry, they give the tenders to BEE compliant businesses. Being BEE compliant means that a business will have some or all black ownership, some or all black management in the business, the business must employ black people in its ranks, the business must prove that it trains black people in its employ, the business must prove that it buys its supplies from small black suppliers(Preferential Procurement), the business must prove that it supports black enterprise by funding black start-ups, the business must prove that it participates in developing the communities in which it operates. Your postscript confirms the springboard you talk about and it confirms the economic neo-colonisation that I'm talking about. Walmart wanted entry into to the African retail market. They only had two real options: SHOPRITE HOLDINGS which owns Shoprite and many other retail brands across 17 African counties and MASSMART which owns Game and a few other retail brands across 14 African countries. Shoprite was too big for Walmart to buy from their balance sheet and so they settled for South Africa's 3rd biggest retail group Massmart which they bought a 51% controlling stake for $2.4 billion. With just one purchase, Walmart now has access to 14 African countries including Nigeria and they are going to colonise us Africans. Our government doesn't like the deal because they fear that Massmart, through Walmarts global supply chain, will start sourcing most of it's products from cheap markets like China which will put a lot of small black manufactures out of business. Nigerian government should also be just as scared. Game is no longer South African, it's the Americans who are in charge.
