PoliticsRe: Licence To MINT Money? The Countries That Could Become Economic Superpowers by PapaBrowne(m): 2:14am On Jan 03, 2014
But the most exciting MINT country, O’Neill suggests, is Nigeria. ‘The place is complete madness, of course, and one can’t be 100 per cent sure, given its challenges, that it will be one country in four years. But after India, it’s the best in the world in terms of useful population. By 2050, Nigeria will have more people than the United States. If you get those young people in productive jobs, that place will arguably be the most exciting country in the world in the next 30 years. Linked to that, there are so many creative entrepreneurs there and, interestingly, so many educated Nigerians returning from the US because they smell this opportunity to be the next big thing.’ Nigeria is also rich in resources, including oil.
If we are wise, we will stone all these politicians that are telling us to have no faith in the country. The opposition is taking thier negativity too far. Nigerians should be encouraged to create greatness out of their country and not the nonsense lies that the local press have choosen to feed the gullible with.

In all, its not politicians that will fix Nigeria. It is entrepreneurs.
Going by this definition, there is no doubt that Ibos are IDPs in Nigeria.

What do you think?
And by your estimation, the Yoruba tailor who makes my clothes somewhere in the Niger Delta is internally displaced. Same as the Shell worker from Osun state and those guys from Ijebu Ode who sell some roots in bottles. All of them IDPs.

Infact even Aregbeshola was an IDP when he fled Osun State to go to Lagos and work as commissioner.
Adenuga from Ogun state living in Banana Island is also a IDP.

All these kind of childish folks promoting hatred are doing themselves and their future generations no good. Pretty unintelligent fellow.
PoliticsRe: FRESH AIR In The Nigeria Police Force!! by PapaBrowne(m): 4:18pm On Jan 02, 2014
The best thing that has happened to travelers in the country is the exit of road blocks. Funnily with it came an almost complete eradication of high way robberies. The big question I've been asking is were the police officers responsible for the incessant robberies?

My night time travels have increased radically. It feels much safer. Sometimes I
am leaving lag for benin at 7.30 in the evening.

It's just a mystery how less police on the roads resulted in much less robberies.
PoliticsRe: Fashola Is Doing An Amazing Job by PapaBrowne(m): 10:04am On Jan 02, 2014
geeez: I've not seen an administrator who is more intelligent and positive

He's also very inspiring and brings sound arguments to the table

His model is simply superb and though he may not be everything to everyone, he is definitely a shift from the norm

I love his commitment, his attitude and his desire to make things better

He's definitely someone I'll love to work with over and over
You are absolutely right. A very brilliant administrator. I do love his attitude, commitment and desire to make things better.

But the big question is: Has he performed in equation to the amount of money that has been available at his disposal or has he harnessed the huge opportunity that Lagos presents? The answer is a big no. For a state that has most of its infrastructure already built up, you would have taught that after 6 + years in government, the state would be awash with world class infrastructure left right and centre but all we talk about is a link bridge in Ikoyi. Every other mega project is less than 30% complete or still on paper. LFTZ, Light Rail, LekkiAirport, Fourth Mainland bridge, Lekki Epe expressway, and the list is endless. Just a couple inner city roads done and nothing more. Fashola by himself knows that he did not meet even his own expectations.
PoliticsRe: Gradual Transformation Of Nigerian Infrastructure; Focus On Roads by PapaBrowne(m): 10:53pm On Dec 30, 2013
I only challenged you and your likes to name the roads began and completed by GEJ. I gave list of five roads in Edo State alone that was either dualised completely or constructed from scratch during Obasanjo's time.

As a fellow south south man, I expected Jonathan to lay a very solid foundation infrastructure wise, so that whoever takes over from Him would know that the bar has been raised very high and He or She will have no option but to continue from there.

Lets be honest with ourselves, a sitution where most state governors are now the ones constructing the Federal highways through their state, those that not tell you something?
Abagworo is not a GEJ supporter and he has told you the truth. I respect people like him. But you refuse to be honest with yourself.
I've been travelling pretty much as a result of a project I've been running for about a year now.

Two things you will surely notice and every traveler agrees is 1) The absense of police check points is the best thing that has happened in ages. Not only are there almost no more highway robberies, the journey is smoother.
The second biggest observation is the amount of road construction going on accross the country in a very active fashion.
From Lagos to Ibadan, Shagamu to Ore, Ore to Benin, Benin to Auchi, Auchi to Lokoja, Lokoja to Abuja, Warri to Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt to Oron, Enugu to Onistsha, Enugu to Port Harcourt and the list is endless. The road construction taking place in Nigeria is unprecedented and as Abagworo rightly said, if you at least dont want to attribute it to Jonathan, you canat least admit its a result of excess cash from oil sales as well as high oil output.

In States controlled by both APC and PDP, the bar has been raised. People insult Uduaghan of Delta State, but the amount of works he has done across the state would have been the top 3 performaces if he were in the 99-07 class of governors.

The reason for the improved performance is simple. Power is shifting fast to the people. Votes now count so politicians are more careful. Your biggest currency is performance. If you dont perform, you cannot even rig successfully. Go and ask Ohakim.
The biggest achievement of President Jonathan is allowing us to freely choose our leaders. In OBJ's era, it didn't matter whether or not you performed. You just needed the right Godfathers and you will be returned. To think Lucky Igbinedion ruled Edo State for 8 years without a single road contruction. Not one to his name!! Wouldn't happen now in even the worst performing state.

PoliticsRe: Patience Jonathan's Alleged Billion Naira Hotel Under Construction (PHOTOS) by PapaBrowne(m): 3:06pm On Dec 30, 2013
My family house is probably bigger and nicer than Jonathan's house. Most houses in Lekki look better than this. Many houses in GRA benin look better and bigger. Many houses in PH are better than this. Bendel Estate warri has nicer houses. Many villages in the east have nicer houses. If this is all someone who has been deputy governor, governor, Vice President and President can build, then he hasn't been stealing money.

Even LG chairmen in poor states like Ekiti and Ebonyi have bigger houses.

The foolish article is intended to paint a picture of of corruption because the president owns a house. Well this strategy might work in Ghana or Liberia not in Nigeria whee the society is awash with individual wealth.
PoliticsRe: Tony Elumelu - The Next CBN Governor by PapaBrowne(m): 7:29pm On Dec 28, 2013
mad nigerian: Look at it this way.

We are earning a lot of money from oil, and are using it to import a lot of goods we should be manufacturing......like Biscuits, toothpaste, and detergent....which are more expensive than the local goods....and which push up the prices.

This leads to increased inflation.

It costs a lot of money to print notes.

If Sanusi prints more lower denomination naira notes, he may make you and me happy....but to cover for inflation , he would have to print a very high number of these notes....which would increase CBN'S printing cots( especially now that most of our notes are printed abroad.)

Note that the cost of printing one N20= the cost of printing one N100= Cost of printing N1000.

When that happens, CBN has a choice. Either print more lower denomination notes.....and see increased costs thanks to inflation ...or print higher denomination notes and save money and cover for inflation.

Which is why I advocate that Nigeria stop relying on oil.....and start manufacturing most of the things we import.

Strong economies are not oil dependent. See here....http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/11/opinion/sunday/friedman-pass-the-books-hold-the-oil.html?_r=0
Your post is the exact reason I think Sanusi does a very bad job. I totally agree with the bolded.
We should manufacture more and depend less on oil.
Now one way to do that is to reduce interest rates drastically. He did little or nothing to attack the issues that have blessed us with high interest rates.

Another thing that would encourage manufacturing is access to capital. Well Sanusi literally killed this access to capital and failed to build it or encourage banks to give more to manufacturing He did some good with regard to Agricultural capital throiugh his NISRAL policy but manufacturing still suffers tremendously.

The impact of a lack of "change" on the economy via inflation or reduced production is much higher than the impact of Sanusi having to print more "change". Lack of "Change is destroying small businesses. The newspaper I didn't buy yesterday would sell much less copies and in turn have a lower turnover at the end of the year making it difficult to pay staff and this scenario replicates across the economy. If you want to know how much of an impact it is having, go and ask La Casera its impact of their highway sellers.

JulianBond007: At least it was in the budget unlike Peter Obi who did his to get political favour. I don't think the purchase of cars by Obi was in the budget anyway. If something has to be done, it should be done at the right time to avoid suspicion.
My money was used anyhow but at least I was told first before they used it anyhow. Your money was used anyhow but they didn't tell you first, they just used it anyhow.

Very funny how Nigerians have become a sad complexion of their chosen leaders. In all cases, money that would have been used to build hospitals or roads or classrooms have been spent frivolously and we suffer the consequenses, yet we say the man across the river did the same thing but he did it without telling his people while our own told is first. This is sad and pathetic.

Now let me break down to you what the amount spent on 200 cars would have done for Lagos.

Been that it's been given to Obas, the cars must be above average. So I would assume a price of at least 5-8 million Naira given by the amount a Camry sells for in this country. That leaves of with btw 600 million and 960 million on cars for traditional rulers who play no constitutional role in the state.

That amount of money would

1) Buy 5000 solar street lights at $1000 each. It would have lighted permanently at least 250 streets in Lagos

2)It would have bought 30-40 BRT buses at N20m each

3) It would have started an rapid response ambulance system for lagos state with 50 ambulances and a complete command and control centre.

4) It would have built a world class mental institution to rid the streets of Lagos state of the unsightly mad people we see regularly.

5)It would have built a world class IT hub that would give the many young programming brainiards a base to launch their start-ups making lagos a potential silicon valley which could churn billions of dollars for the city in the future.

6) It could have built a trailer park for the teeming number of trailers on Apapa Oshodi expressway thereby allowing free flow of traffic.

7) It could have placed traffic lights in all major streets in Lagos.

cool Would have started a functional fire station with at least 10 trucks.

9)Would have done some much. But no he would rather give traditional rulers!!!

OAM4J: PapaBrowne you are one of the posters I respect here especially when it comes to discussion on Economics matters, just admit you went too far describing him as "intellectually limited". If you had said he is not as good as Soludo in economics and monetary policies, I wouldn't have taken you up cos that would have been your personal opinion and preference. All his errors notwithstanding, no one who has ever listened to Sanusi should describe him as "intellectually limited", the guy is intellectually very sound and very intelligent.
By Intellectual limitation I refer to his knowledge in the specific field which is limited to a BSC in Economics. Most of his peers have much more than that. Soludo, his predecessor is a Prof who is studied in economics and is an intellectual icon in his field. There are many others from all tribes who are who have much more intellectual capacity than Sanusi in the field of economics.

If I am giving a choic between choosing Sanusi as President and choosing him as CBN governor, I will make him president ten times over making him CBN Governor., He is a brilliant man no doubt, but he has limitations intellectually in the field of economics and hence doesn't fit the job description.

mad nigerian: The reason why there is no change.......

Inflation....fuelled by over-importation of the things we manufacture.....which means higher prices...which means higher inflation rates, So if we print more lower denomination notes we would end up pushing up the inflation to higher rates.

Don't blame Sanusi...blame the oil addicted economy.

Also, blame Joe Sani(CBN Gov from 2000-2006) for introducing N100, 200, 500 and 1000 notes.....which was not his fault anyways., because of inflation.
Inflation, importation or higher prices can never be the reason there is no "change". A taxi driver gave me a better answer when he said that the increased use of ATM which disburses only 1000 Naira denominations is responsible. His answer gave me a rethink. I initially assumed Sanusi might be doing this purposely. But the Taxi drivers submission simmered my opinions.

mad nigerian: Actually, he does have the Masters......the statement you quote means that he got his MSc Economics, with a distinction in the monetary policy course.

Plus, when looking for job with your Masters, any distinctions you make in your masters courses gives you an edge in the job market. I speak boldly as someone who has done a Masters abroad.

Also, he was a Lecturer for two years at ABU......and ABU back then did not accept lecturers who had half completed their courses. I speak as a graduate OF ABU and as the son of an ex-lecturer at ABU.

If he did not complete his course.....how did he get the First Bank Job? First bank, when last I checked , employed people with qualifications, not people without. And First Bank did very well under his stewardship. Or, have Nigerian banks started giving jobs to people who are not qualified?

Please, don't lie, and do not be a bigot.
Sanusi's daddy's friend is the "owner" of first bank. Go figure. Sanusi was at UBA for a while before moving to first bank when Mutallab was chairman. Mutallab is the owner of Jaiz Bank which Sanusi wanted to fund with CBN money. Mutallab is the father of Nigerian underwear bomber.

"It explains everything we've been saying about this guy! He rose to his position in the banking industry by virtue of his royal lineage.
I have always wondered why Sanusi never deemed it necessary throughout his career as a banker to develop himself further.

The guy is a misfit for the position he sits upon. He would definitely be better off as an EFCC Chairman or better still he should be considered as a Chairman off the Pilgrims Board where he can make adequate use of his Sudanese degree in Islamic studies".
Strangely, I would tell you that I actually like Sanusi . Nigeria needs men like him, but surely not as CBN governor. He would do much better as an EFCC chairman. He did badly as a CBN governor as we recorded insane monetary policies in his tenure. I dont know where you live, but if you live in Nigeria, you would notice the scarcity of change. If you are an economist, you would understand the impact of something as simple as that on the economy at large. I would explain in simpler terms with a story. I tried to buy newspapers yesterday but the vendor had no change and I had no change. I didnt buy the paper any longer. I tried to buy a bottle of Sprite a few days ago. It costs 120 Naira. The seller had no change. I didnt but any longer. If this is not fixed, either of two things would happen. Either the quantity of goods been sold would go down or the price of goods would go up. Either way, it would slow down the economy. But its has run on for months and the CBN Governor has refused to do anything about it. I hope my long epistle helps explain the impact of Sanusi's intellectual limitations.

mikeansy: If APC picks anyone but Fashola as their candidate

then Jonathan's re-election will becomes a walk in the park

The best combo for APC is Fashola and a Northern Christain from either middle belt or North East. I think APC can find either a retired Army Officer, Banker, Lecturer or Lawyer from these regions to run as Fashola's VP.

The electoral maths for 2015 suits Fashola!

Kwakwanso or Tambuwal will guarantee Jonathan's re-election.
The scenario you painted is what I term the Jonathan Checkmate.
APC's strongholds are the Core North and the South West. If you put a Northern Christian as you stipulated, APC core north votes will almost definitely be diminished by millions. If you put a core northerner, and pair him with a south southerner or south easterner, be sure that Sweners are sitting at home on election day. If you put Fashola at the bottom of the ticket with a core northerner, the Muslim Muslim ticket will scare away Swestern Christians.
The best bet, even though it is a risky hard sell, would be Fashola on top of the ticket with a Northern Christian. Fashola is the most popular candidate and with an almost clean record. He will definitely lock down the South west. If you have a popular middle beltan on the ticket, you will grab lots of middlke belt votes. As for the core North, their votes might be diluted, but they would not be voting Jonathan so the few than can be persuaded by thier leaders would would give a Fashola/Middle beltan something to ride home with. It is the best bet but it doesnt equate to a win which is why I call the entire scenario the Jonathan checkmate.

Sanusi graduated from King's College Lagos in 1977 and studied at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria earning a BSc in Economics in 1981. He then taught economics at ABU from 1983 to 1985. My tribe is filled with people with limited intellectual capacity and I wouldn't be short on reminding anyone from my tribe of his limitations who is giving a complex position like the CBN and chooses to run it aground with all braggadocio. I think the post of CBN would kind of belittle Elumelu. The guy is poised for much bigger. Boggling him down in regulatory bureaucracy would not cut it for Elumelu. The trending words today in global finance are impact investment, conscious capitalism and social entrepreneurship. Elumelu is at the forefront of these three with his Africapitalism model.

For a regulatory institution like CBN, we need folks who are long on policy framework design and implementation. A Soludo type who can easily create policy and convert it into practicality. Not a lot of people come to mind.

While you are thinking about the Yoruba race many Yorubas are thinking about the Christian race. 2015 Elections: Al-Qaeda Doles Out $500 Million To Boko Haram
Al-Qaeda, the dreaded International Islamist terrorist group, recently
doled out a whooping $500 Million, an equivalent of N80 Billion to Boko
Haram for the purchase of arms and high caliber weapons to begin an
orchestrated attack ahead of the 2015 general elections,
pointblanknews.com has been reliably informed.

The $500 Million (N80 Billion), is specifically meant to remove “infidels”
in Government and ensure that Muslim candidates from the North emerge in
2015 as part of the Sect’s plan to Islamize Nigeria.

Boko Haram had said part of its demands is for Nigeria to be ruled under
the Sharia Law and for President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the
Minority south to convert to Islam.

The National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki, (retd.) recently
confirmed that the international terror organization, Al Qaeda, has made
inroads into Nigeria’s security system.

Although Dasuki did not give details of the inroads made by Al-Qaeda but
sources said the NSA was merely confirming security reports that Boko
Haram has been bolstered by financial supports it received from the
international terrorist organization.

“What the NSA said was just a tip into the current situation. Boko Haram
is now very rich. They just received about $500 Million from Al-Qaeda and
that has greatly energized them,” the source told pointblanknews.com.

Fighters from Boko Haram had marched into Maiduguri city recently in
pick-up trucks and on motorcycles, before opening fire with rockets and
small arms on a military base, signaling the launch of its new tactics and
weaponry.

Security sources told pointblanknews.com that Boko Haram had told Al-Qaeda
that it needed $1 Billion to remove “infidels” ruling Nigeria and install
Muslims who will help to Islamize Nigeria.

The Security sources said Boko Haram leaders told the leadership of
Al-Qaeda that the Islamization of Nigeria, the most populous black nation
is key in the quest to Islamize West Africa.

After considering the request, sources said Al-Qaeda released an initial
$500 Million calculated to be N80 Billion at the exchange rate of N160 per
dollar.

The International terror group plans to release additional funds upon
review of Boko Haram success

Pointblanknews.com gathered that some politicians from the Northern
extractions who are bent on having political power returned to the North
aided the receipt of the funds to Boko Haram.

A source confirmed that some top Northern leaders are currently under
scrutiny for helping Boko Haram receive the cash donation from Al-Qaeda.
The Northern leaders under investigation are also accused of giving cover
to members of the Sect.

“Al-Qaeda did not send the funds through Banks or any conventional method,
they used some people and we are currently investigating and as soon as we
are through, those found guilty will be prosecuted according to the law,”
a source hinted.

A security source knowledgeable with the current trend of Boko Haram who
preferred to be anonymous confirmed that the sect has only recently
received the sums and has started purchase of weapons.

“They have the money now and they are getting weapons as we speak.”

According to the source, “we are also tracking down the source of the
weapons they are buying and we are almost done with that.”

Pointblanknews.com gathered that the current weapons being purchased by
Boko Haram are of more sophistication than those used by the Soldiers
stationed in the North East region.

A source who want to remain anonymous said Boko Haram currently outnumbers
the current Military strength on ground in the North East region of
Nigeria.

“We have it on good authority that from the funding they recently
received, they have recruited more people and paying them well too.”

According to him, “they have a new plan now to destabilize the country
ahead of the 2015 general elections because they had told Al-Qaeda that
the country is currently being ruled by infidels and that they have what
it takes to Islamize Nigeria.”

ilugunboy: If you really live among us here as you claimed...then you would have come to realize that we don't put much emphasis on religion but our language bind us together more than religion.

The religion card is dead on arrival as GEJ is candidate for PDP.
You are getting the whole point wrong. I am from Edo state and there, we have Muslims and Christians live side by side with zero differences. Adams Oshiomole's parents(Father is late) are very strong Muslims. Infact not only do we lay zero emphasis on religion, we lay no emphasis on tribe as well. Binis voted overwhemingly for Oshiomole(Etsako) against a Bini candidate. The Oba even supported Oshiomole against a Bini man. So I totally understand what you mean when you say Yorubas dont pay attention to religion amongst themselves.

But to the religion coming from Northern Nigeria, hmmmmm.....a lot of attention is paid. Even Yoruba muslims sef dey fear that kind Northern Islam. So my point is that a Northern Muslim atop the ticket paired with Fashola will make Fashola instantly redundant.

Orlando Owoh: It is obvious you don't know that difference in religion among the Yoruba doesn't create any tension. The governors and first ladies in the SW and Kwara State belong to different religions.
I know that very well. I am not talking about difference in Religion amongst Yoruba. In the eyes of even other Nigerians, nobody sees differences btw Yoruba Muslims and Yoruba Christians. But everybody sees a huge difference between a Northern Christian and a Northern Muslim.
Fashola would have a better showing in Ibo land than Fayemi who is the only Yoruba Christian Governor.

What I am talking about is not Fashola or Yoruba Muslims. I am talking about a Hausa/ Fulani Muslim atop the ticket. Even you guys that are speaking are not going to be motivated to vote when the time comes. The only reason you would come out is to see GEJ doesnt win. You surely wouldn't be motivated if Senator Yerima is Paired atop with Fashola below, would you? By the way, Yerima is a big time APC member.

I am here for intelligent discussions and analysis not sentimental and biased dispositions. Lets make the lead up to 2015 more interesting such that we would discuss more about issues and less about persons.

dayokanu: I speak Yoruba tongue more than most people on this forum. I attend a Pentecostal church

And no single member of my home church or family have a problem with a Moslem Yorubaman

infact we(Yoruba xtians) can associate more with a Fashola, Aregbesola or Tinbu than a Jonathan, Peter Obi or Gabriel Suswan

How can fashola, Tinubu or Aregbe Islamize Nigeria or Yorubaland when they havent islamized their immediate family? These men sleep with xtian wifes daily, went to Xtian secondary schools, attend churches, have family members as xtians attend Redemption camp monthly celebrate xmas and easter as much as Ileya

You dont know Yorubas and you have no right to talk about them

Speak about your own people either as Ibo or Edo depending on which side you want to identify with today
This is the attitude that marvels me with Nairalanders. I am not Yoruba so I cannot speak about Yorubas that I'm surrounded with left right and center at work, in Church, in my neighborhood, as friends, acquaintances and as family et al. You are in Texas, Mr. You are surrounded by Whites, Hispanics and some black folk. And your write up says it clearly that you are lost on the realities on ground. Wishing that you will win would not take you there. Fcaing realities and working out you weaknesses would bring you closer to victory. Strategy is king, Mr. And I'm giving you insight that you can advise your APC to use against the PDP even though I'm voting PDP in 2015. I simply want a very competitive election even though I know that we are coasting home to victory.

Since you are finding it hard to comprehend my speech, let me simplify using pointers.

1) Fashola is not atop the ticket.
2)If he is placed below Buhari, Yorubas especially Pentecostal types would remember suddenly that Fashola is also a Muslim.
3)If an ex PDP stranger like Kwankwanso or Tambuwal is atop the ticket, Yorubas would remember they are from the corrupt PDP and terrorist North.
4)A Ribadu type would have worked best, but he is obviously expired after his poor outing in 2011. El Rufai would also have worked if he hadn't created an anti Christian image for himself with his comments.

The best bet would have been a Fashola atop the ticket. Its a gamble that can actually be sold. That way you are sure of the SW mixed with a good number from the core north. Core Northerners will vote whoever their leaders instruct them to. But you know what, APC leaders don't want a Fashola for obvious tribal reasons. Yes it must be Hausa/ Fulani or nothing else.

dayokanu: Are you a SW christian or who gave you the right to speak for Yoruba xtians.

I am a Yoruba xtian

Watch how all Yoruba xtians troop out to vote for our son Fashola or any popular Yoruba politician on the APC ticket regardless of his religion

The Yoruba who had no problem voting majority Moslems as their governors, Yorubas Moslem in Osun had no problems voting a xtian-xtian ticket for Oyinlola-Obada

Yoruba whether xtian or Moslems dont care for religion what comes first is our culture and heritage
Dayo, you are a Yoruba xtian based in Texas or thereabouts. The Yoruba tongue speaking xtian who goes to redemption camp or Shiloh or MFm for convention every year has an entirely different outlook. He views the killing of Christians(be they igbo, birom, ijaw, yoruba) by Boko Haram the same way he viewed sanusi's actions on the banking industry: a grand design to Islamise Nigeria. Presenting a Muslim Muslim ticket will raise their hairs and would rush them out with protest votes for PDP.
