Gbawe:Good you mentioned Femi Falana. FYI, Femi Falana is one of the lawyers that have petitioned the UN with a view of bringing Buhari to justice. Femi is on SERAP's Advisory board and handles most of its cases. Apparently, egbon GBAWE na your ignorance we "dey laff" oh, .! |
Bassey131: Beaf:Sorry for not dropping any updates. Traveled without my laptop and was very busy so hardly visited Nairaland! Every since you guys mentioned the ICC option, looks like the whole world started looking in that direction. Made a few inquiries and apparently there is a huge number of petitions already sitting at the ICC requesting the "The Prosecutor" to look into the violence and bring to book those involved. Interestingly a huge number of them are asking for Buhari's inciting role to be investigated and where found guilty brought to book. Looks like the ICC is not taking this case lightly and would thoroughly investigate whether or not the violence was premeditated. Most of the petitions are filed by high profile Human rights groups like SERAP. Interestingly, I'm finding that Nigerians have risen up and decided that enough is enough of these kinds of impunity. Private citizens are no longer waiting for government and are doing anything in their capacity to bring to book those that have used their mouths to shed blood!! I stumbled on an online movement that seeks to garner as many signatures as possible in support of the prosecution of Buhari. They already have over 200 signatures. That is very impressive considering they probably just started this week. We should promote the petition and seek to get it to over 10,000 signatures. http://www.petitiononline.com/promub11/petition.html Every other possible means of bringing these evil perpetrators to justice is welcome. Wole Soyinka has also spoken about the violence and he thinks they were premeditated with Buhari being complicit considering he refused to outrightly denounce the violence when he spoke first on TV. http://www.thenationonlineng.net/2011/index.php/news/4501-killings-in-the-north-planned-says-soyinka.html |
They are yet to arrest the known Imams and religions sect leaders who incite violence, because of irrational fear, how in the world can he arrest Buhari, a larger than life figure? As for Oritsejafor, whose name literally means "God will not allow us to speak (presumably to avoid sin)" is definitely not living up to his name or position. What a shameful jobber.
Guy, FYI Nigeria has new owners!! The last string of Ahmadu Bello has just been wiped off with the victory of Jonathan!! My advice for all those like Buhari still carrying this untouchable toga is to Fear, be Afraid and be very very Afraid!! The new owners would not condone impunity!! Jonathan nor any other Nigerian would never have to arrest Buhari!! Its some guy from some Mexico or Madagascar or Netherlands or Nicaragua or any other signatory to the Rome convention that would do the handcuffing!! Surely, U don't understand what I've just said. |
One of my heroes!! Like what this guy, Tony Subair does!! |
If anything, all I see is business opportunities!! It actually says that there are immense opportunities in Nigeria. Any good entrepreneur would provide better services at half these prices and make a kill!! Play the market on the reverse and pull the rug off the feet of the greed running the market currently. For instance, hotels in VI charge an average of 30,000- 50,000 naira per nite and yet you pay for internet, breakfast, and everyother thing. Solution. Simple. Start a well designed hotel that offers free internet, breakfast, chaffeur driven car, free laundry, etc and charge say 20,000. You will have 100% occupancy rate. So while your profits per head might not be high, you total profits would probably beat the competition considering you are utilizing 100% capacity!! Bottomline is Entrepreneurs would sove the problem by providing better services at much cheaper prices. Its already happening in telecoms and it can happen in the other sectors!! |
The Origin of Eko (Lagos) There is a lot of traditional history at both Benin and Lagos ends relating to the origin of what is now Lagos, its ruler and it's connection with Benin. But perhaps to avoid inadequacies and controversy which the academics claim surrounds traditional history, we may like to hear what some modern historians have to say on this subject. Robert S. Smith, in his book of some principal Yoruba owns, especially in and around Oyo, and the westward expansion in the 17th century of Benin Kingdom with it's number of subject towns on or near to the coast, which included Lagos, went on to say this about Lagos in particular: "It's name reflect it's past to the Yoruba it's Eko, deriving probably from the farm (Oko) of the earliest settlers, though alternatively-or additionally-it may be the Benin word (Eko) for a war-camp, We say Eko is a Benin word that means camp" After describing the activities of the armies of Benin under Oba Orhogbua, culminating in his arrival at what is now Lagos, Smith went on to add: "Sometime later the Oba appointed a ruler for Lagos to represent the interest of Benin and to forward tribute there. The man chosen is named in both Lagos and Benin Tradition as Ashipa" Smith says that by Lagos account this Ashipa was an Isheri Chief, while the Benin account says Ashipa was a grandson of the Oba of Benin. We shall come to this later. Smith was, however, satisfied that Benin had established it's ascendency in Lagos and had founded a dynasty there at some period before 1700.The dyansty's dependence on Benin, Smith found, was emphasized by the appointment of another Chief, the Eletu Odibo, who alone had the right to crown the Oba and who in early times probably maintained close connection with Benin,.(Eletu Odibo is a corruption of the Edo equivalent Olotu Odibo) "G.T. Stride and C. Ifeka, in their book titled Peoples and empires pf West Africa have this to say on the same subject: Oba Orhogbua was clearly a strong warrior for he enforced tribute payments from all parts of the empire and in the middle 1550s conquered all the coastal lands up to Lagos where he left a permanent garrison. Tradition in Lagos says that their first Oba, the Eleko of Eko, was a son of the Oba Orhogbua of Benin" It will be seen, therefore, that even if we were to disregard traditional history there is enough material from modern historians to confirm the fact that what is now Lagos was founded by an Oba of Benin who also gave it it's first ruler. But we really cannot disregard traditional history. In Benin tradition, and we believe the same of Yoruba and other ethnic groups in this country, one way to establish that an event in traditional history did occur is by the type of anecdote or adage that evolves from that event . Thus, for instance, We Edo people say that "Orhogbua gb'Olague, ona y'ukpe abekpen z'umwen rie Edo, meaning that Oba Orhogbua defeated Olague and used sword to bring his salt to Benin, This is in allusion of to the exploits of Oba Orhogbua while in his camp (Eko) from where he over-ran the place known as Mahin with it's ruler whom the Benin People nicknamed Olague. There Orhogbua discovered the common rock salt and brought it to Benin who thereby tasted it for the first time. Now the name "Ashipa has featured quite prominently (and rightly too) in the history of Lagos. After the Oba Orhogbua returned to Benin from Eko, he appointed a commander or an administrator, who was called Aisikpa to look after the skeleton troop left in the camp(Eko) until he returned again from Benin. He could no longer return having seen the situation at home. The name "Aisikpahienvoborre" which means "people do not desert their home-land. "This is how Aisikpa, whom the Yoruba now call Ashipa, came into the Lagos (Eko) history. Eko is still there as the traditional Benin name for Lagos; Ashipa has been retained as a senior traditional chieftaincy title while his descendants now retain the modern name of Oba of Lagos. The interaction of Edo people with others in distant lands must have inevitably resulted in cultural exchanges. |
No fly Zones come to mind!! One thing I love about this election is how it drew out the perfect map of the two countries that would possibly emerge!! That map is simply divided in terms of Sharia states and Non Sharia states. Buhari won the Sharia states and Jonathan won the non Sharia states. Any coup would put an end to the entity called Nigeria. Its so simple. There would be no need for a war. Calabar would become the new capital and Jonathan would serve as president from there. No need to talk too much. |
Bassey131: Beaf:This is good. Bassey and Beaf, you guys are great! Never knew it was possible to take such a case to the international criminal court. After your posts, I have gone through the statutes of the ICC and not only is it very possible, they have two cases, the Kenyan one and the Ugandan one that is very similar to a case that could be built around Buhari/Bakare incitements! All that is needed is the accent of "The Prosecutor"!! Building critical mass amongst the populace using social networks is the perfect starting point. Right now, the angst amongst the populace against Buhari is at it's peak, hence people would be glad to sign up! Something must be done to punish these kinds of evil men who wouldd stop at nothing to achieve thier selfish ambitions and this is the way to go!! The lives of all those killed is not less than the freedom of the evil tyrants! I'm going to do more research on this angle and see how we can make it a possibility!! The message would be spread and the world would hear that enough is enough of these kinds of violence!! |
Andre Uweh:Thank you Bro. |
I want you two above to be honest. If you were your typical Northern aboki right now, who believes that his candidate (Buhari) won and was cheated out if a victory, how would you respond? (Like, at this point, I don't think any honest and unbiased person will not claim that the powers that be did not rig massively in the SS and SE.) How would you feel? And if you act on your feelings violently, yes, you'd be in the wrong. But aren't those who rigged what should have been a free-and-fair election also in the wrong? GEJ probably could have beaten Buhari in my opinion with no rigging. WTF did he do it? It makes no sense to me. I don't get it. Why? Why spoil what should have been a nice, clean win? Let us put it this way. If GEJ rigs in the SW this upcoming gubernatorial election like he did in the SS and SE, there will be chaos in the SW too. If Fashola (for example) runs against him in four years and is rigged out in the same manner, there will be chaos.
You are being very one sided. I genuinely do not think these elections were rigged because of my experience at my polling booth. I voted in the south south in a high brow area(High brow areas have higher incidences of voter apathy). Turnout at my booth was 71%. PDP cleared 95% of the polls and the rest were shared btw invalid votes, Ribadu, Buhari and the others. The average turnout in the whole of the south south and south east was 66%. So please be scientific and not emotionally unreasonable when you say the elections in these regions were rigged. Give valid reasons why you think they were rigged. Asides how about the massive rigging that took place in the core north with the underage voters and intimidation. What better proof do you need than the facebook comment of the corper that was murdered? When you make the kind of comments you make, it hurts to know that you are in the comfort of your American home while people are been killed because Buhari in his deluded jihadist inclinations thinks the elections were rigged!! Wish you were a Christian living in Kaduna, Kano or any other of the Sharia states. |
hercules07:Mr man, this your reasoning is sad. If you had the simplest form of empathy and understood the agony the families of those murdered are going through, your take on this issue would be totally different. I really can't comprehend your morality. That you cannot see wrong in the killings, and rather choose to point fingers at the government is pathetic. Maybe those that were killed in the SEPT 11 attacks should have sued the American Government for failing to protect them. Maybe known assasins should be allowed their freedom, while we sue the police for failing to protect the populace. Maybe thieves should be left alone while we place the blame on the government for failing to provide jobs for them. I'd like to remind you of the fact that if you venture into the north and stumble upon Buhari and his killers, you life would not be spared because you voted Buhari, it would only be spared if you have a Muslim name and can dance the Jihadist tunes. Pity you bro, pity you. |
The senseless killings in the north can be directly traced to the various statements and acts of incitements Buhari and also Bakare made on their campaign trail. Their supporters had already begun showing signs of violent inclinations long before the elections. Rather than encourage these supporters, most of whom are violent minded, blood hungry, intolerant, uneducated lowlifes, to eschew violence and channel whatever grievances through appropriate means, they went to town inciting these lowlifes to unleash terror on innocent citizens. Hundreds, including the very honorable youth corpers have been killed because of the statements of these two evil politicians and their cohorts. The 2007 elections were the most flawed in our history, but there were no violent reactions because Buhari didn't incite his followers in the direction of violence. Same as 2003. The Legislative and Senate elections in the North a week before the presidential elections were swept by the PDP, but there were no violent reactions. Why are we seeing violent reactions in the election that had Buhari on the ballot?? They had this planned out and it was obvious from their tone and the rhetoric that emanated from their orifice. Buhari called for "Lynching" and Bakare talked about a "wild wild north". I also have a video where Bakare talked about and encourages the idea of his supporters going to the polling units with matches and a bottle of Kerosine, obviously to burn down INEC officials(Youth Corpers) suspected of rigging. In all these, they forgot to explain to their Blood Hungry, violent minded, intolerant, uneducated lowlifes what exactly is the meaning of rigging. I want to sue. We should be tired of complaining endlessly and instead take action against these evil men that continually sacrifice the lives of innocent Nigerians for their own selfish ambition. Bottomline is I'm looking to sue Buhari and Bakare for murder and wanton destruction of lives and property and I'm very serious about it. So I have these few questions for Lawyers and those that know law in the house. 1) What kind of charges can I file against Buhari and Bakare given the fact that I am not directly affected by this violence. 2) Would it be better to get those that have been affected directly to file a suit? For example, families of those that have been killed and folks that have had their properties destroyed! 3) What directions is a case of this nature likely to take? 4)What kind of evidence linking Buhari and Bakare to the violence would be permissible in court? 5) When this case is done and when its been won, how many years are Buhari and Bakare likely to spend behind bars?? 6) Can the law suit be filed anywhere in the country or only in the location of the violence? Please all, feel free to advice. The lives of the innocent people that have been killed are not less than the freedom of these evil tyrants! I am suing and I'm serious about it!! Don't care how much it would cost!! |
Jarus:There was no state that recorded 90% voter turnout. http://nigeriaelections.org/presidential.php Bayelsa recorded the highest turnout with 85%. Now thats understandable considering the excitement of the people of the state. The state is the smallest in Nigeria so 85% turnout there would not influence the result at all. The average turnout in the SS and SE was 66%. Edo state recorded 37% while Ebonyi state recorded 47%. I voted in the South south. My polling booth recorded about 520 voters out of 700+ registered voters. Now that's about 70% turnout. The result was PDP-479. ACN-17. CPC-12. This is statistically similar to the results INEC presented so I don't understand why Buhari who didn't bother campaign in the SS and SE would complain about GEJ scoring 99% in his stronghold. As per GEJ's 1.1 million votes in KD, common! KD has the highest population of southerners in any northern state. Add that to Southern Kaduna. Add Sambo, Markarfi, Tafida, Yakowa and all the other PDP stalwarts the control the state and you will find the 1.1 million acceptable. |
Plz outlaw and the followings : 1. Polygamy 2. Underage marriage These are amongst the top factors plaguing Nigeria.
Interesting topic! I think rather than outlaw, considering the very sensitive nature of these issues(They are religion centric), carrots should be used to discourage especially polygamy as well as underage marriage. We should also seek to reconstruct the cultural framework of those engaging in such using education and enlightenment. One thing to consider; In underage marriage, Wealthy families in Northern Nigeria would never give off their daughters at a young age. So finance might be one factor encouraging this practice amongst the poor. To discourage this, it would be ok to offer some extra welfare benefits to families that keep their daughters till say 21 before giving them off in marriage. For polygamy, maybe government services like free education, free healthcare and all those other welfare packages should cover only the Children of the First wife. |
Crying Presidential Candidate |
@OP You can look at it from another angle. What if Ribadu was in this elections all the while just to scuttle Buhari's chances. For a job well done, he gets a top position in the Jonathan Government. He uses that position to build political capital and popular support in preparedness for 2015. He enters 2015 with more visibilty and political experience garnered from running in 2011. That to me is strategic thinking and I bet you it would serve him better than working in a Buhari party. I also believe that was also Shekarau's strategy- use these elections to prevent a Buhari victory and garber enough exposure for 2015. As per Tinubu, I always used to say it that since sometime in 2009, Tinubu was in the same ship with Obasanjo. They met sometime in that period. They had one common goal- breaking the northern hegemony!! These two men are the greatest political strategists in Nigeria currently and they did a great job in pulling the rug of the northern hegemony!! The Ekiti and Osun state victories were just trade-offs. Forget all those arguments between Katsina Alu and Salami. |
DrummaBoy:Mr man, if you've never been to Kaduna shut up and keep quite. Do you know how many Christians live in Kaduna Isn't Sambo from Kaduna?? Isn't PDP very strong in Kaduna? Don't you think PDP has voters in Kaduna![]() About GEJ winning 95% in the SE and SS. Does CPC have any office in these regions Did CPC place any adverts on Radio and TV in these regions?? Were there any Buhari posters in any of these regions?? How were the people of these regions expected to know that Buhari was contesting? And if they knew how were they expected to vote for him when they didn't know anything about his plans!!The Buhari's CPC is as popular in the SS and SE as Chris Okotie's Fresh Democratic party is popular in the north. So why isn't Chris Okotie complaining that he was rigged out in the north?? Sometimes you folks just speak nonsense like your head is between your legs!! |
dayokanu:I have never known you to be pathetically unintelligent, but I'm beginning to see U in that light!! FYI, the military is already on ground in these areas curtailing the violence. One way to get the violence down is by asking Buhari to prevail on his supporters. And thats what the president has done. Diplomacy comes first. Its only when it fails that force comes in. Only a fool would take actions(such as you've suggested) that would lead to an escalation of violence, a potential coup and a potential civil war. And surely, the president is no fool, hence his actions are well calculated. Your hatred for the president is surely making you sound like a below average, no nothing fella and I'm pretty sure you are not one!! |
Obviously, the Buhari camp has mental issues!! I voted in the south south and all the allegations here are clearly false as nobody I know experience any of these. Bakare even lost his polling unit in Lagos by a massive margin to the PDP so how does he expect to obtain votes from the south south and south east when he didn't run one single TV or Radio advertisement. These men ignored these regions and expected to get votes here. Most people don't even know his party's name. The ballot papers didn't have contestants names, it only had party names. Goodluck Jonathan on the other hand campaigned vigorously in the Core north. His party, PDP has loads of supporters in the north and yet he got only 30% of the votes there The events currently happening in the north are the exact reason why Buhari was rejected by southerners. We've always known the man is a bigoted tribalist and his actions and that of his supporters have proved it!! Funnily, even if the results of all the states in the south south and south east are cancelled, Jonathan would still win by over 2 million votes!! |
hercules07:Lets assume for the sake of argument that the votes were rigged in the SS an SE. If you take out all of the SS and SE votes, Jonathan still wins by over 1 million. Please go and do the maths!! The difference is over 10 million. |
Feels like 1983 all over again. . . Don't know how terribly they rigged this election, but there is a limit to how much you can push people. I feel sad for the innocent ones caught up in this nonsense. This is really unfortunate and sad.
Kilode?, you are one of the most sensible fellows on Nairaland. I ask you, do you sincerely believe these elections were rigged?? If so, how?? I voted in the south south and my polling booth, located in a highbrow area recorded a turnout of 70+% with 510+ voters. The results were: PDP:479, ACN:17, CPC:12. My polling booth corresponded perfectly with the voting patterns across the south south and south east. So please explain to me how the elections were rigged?? |
reindeer:Why is there no violence in the ACN's south west where PDP swept the elections Why is it only in areas where you have Buhari strongholds?? Buhari called for lynching without educating the illiterate voters that there is the very likely possibility of him losing!! Buhari can stop this violence by simply going to BBC Hausa service and calling on all his supporters to end the violence. But no, this has always been his plan. This country might just have to be split so all this things can stop. |
Lagosboy:What results were rigged?? If any rigging took place it was underage voters in Northern Nigeria. My polling booth in the south south recorded 70% turnout with over 95% of voters voting PDP. This pattern reflected perfectly in the results so what rigging are U talking about?? |
Lagosboy:All it takes for the violence to stop is for the leader of these guys,(Buhari) to come out and call for an end to the violence!! He started the call for violence by asking the illiterates to lynch election riggers without explaining to them what election rigging means. If he is a good leader and loves all Nigerians irrespective of your tribe or religion, he would call out on these people to stop the killing and violence. But as usual the General never condemns violence! He would probably not say a word! |
papabrowne: |
Why can't this Buhari of a man come out and say anything!! He started all this and he must stop it!! If these folks can't exist in peace, this country would be better of seperated!! We gain nothing from these folks so we loose nothing in a seperation!! |
Jarus:At least the money reflated the economy as it was spread across the nooks and crannies of the Northern Villages!! Appears like Tinubu self got a fair share!! Its called oil money and it was pumped out of Otueke!!!! Anyways, these are just allegations from Sahara reporters and the like. Although this was an expensive election, it sure isn't anywhere in the region of what is projected!! Asides the money used surely wasn't from the coffers of the Government!! |
The saddest part is that christian BB supporters that these violent CPC guys come across would not be spared in their carnage!! The onus now is on Buhari and Bakare to come out and call for an end to the violence!! |
Jarus:At least the oil money he used to campaign is coming from his village naaa So if he shared some of it with the rest of the country shouldn't they be thankful eeh?? |
Pataki:True, arresting him now might actually aggravate the the problem! But compelling him forcefully to come out and tell his suppoters to be calm would be in the right order!! Sadly Pataki, if you, a Buhari supporter were caught by these CPC supporters, you would be vandalized alongside anything PDP for the simple fact that you are a "Kufir". I was on Buhari fanpage yesterday and all I could see from comments there is an Islamic movement!! Your talk about Nassarawa says clearly that you know little about many parts of Northern Nigeria. Nassarawa is a largely Christian state. Same with Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Benue and to a lesser extent Niger, Kaduna and Kogi. The results from these elections clearly point to voting on ethnic and religious lines so there was no way Buhari was going to win on this one!! Your talk about inflated figures is absolutely untrue. I voted in the south south. My polling booth recorded a 70% turnout. About 520 votes cast out of about 700 + registered voters. The votes cast were PDP: 479. ACN: 17: CPC:12. This pattern corresponds perfectly with the results as announced by INEC. HERE: http://nigeriaelections.org/presidential.php Before you start screaming inflated results why not ask those that voted in the SS and SE what turnout was like and use scientific means to crosscheck with what has been reported by INEC. IF at all anything, you will find that the NorthWest had overinflated registration figures but couldn't double vote because of the voting pattern applied. I don't even want to mention the underage voting. I will just let that pass. And lastly, Jonathan would still have won even if he didn't get a single vote from the SS and SE. Do the maths broda!! There is a 11 million vote difference btw Jonathan and Buhari and the total number of voters in the SS and SE isn't up to that. This was a trouncing and those violent folks should learn to be good losers. |
IF BUHARI DOESN'T COME OUT TO CALL HIS BOYS TO ORDER, HE SHOULD BE PUT UNDER HOUSE ARREST! THE MAN IS A SECURITY RISK!! SAME AS BAKARE WITH HIS INCITEFUL STATEMENTS |
The sad reality is that these people would kill even those BB supporters that don't speak Hausa!!! If you are a BB supporter and have family in the north, you better find a way to reach the violence inciting Buhari to call his boys to order!!! |
