The Nigeria Football Federation has confirmed that a prestige friendly match between the Super Eagles and England’s Three Lions will take place at the Wembley Stadium in London on Saturday, 2nd June 2018.

The match will be only the third between both countries at senior level, and will serve as the Super Eagles’ final preparatory game for the FIFA World Cup finals in Russia, with their first match against Croatia in Kaliningrad coming exactly two weeks after.

NFF 1st Vice President and Chairman of the Federation’s Organizing Committee, Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi, told thenff.com on Tuesday: “The match is now confirmed. We had been doing a lot of work in the background, even going back to last year.

“We have other matches and programs for the team, and we will soon roll out the entire plan for matches, camping sites and training camps.”

The idea of a friendly game between England and Nigeria in the present dispensation was first mooted in 2015, when NFF President Amaju Pinnick met with then Chairman of The FA, Greg Dyke in London. Afterwards, Pinnick and NFF 2nd Vice President/LMC Chairman Shehu Dikko (who is also Chairman of the NFF Marketing, Sponsorship and TV Rights Committee) met with incumbent Chairman of The FA, Greg Clarke, also in London.

One of the promises made by Pinnick at the onset of his administration was that he would actualize a match between the senior teams of Nigeria and England. That has now become a reality - another promise fulfilled.

Organizers hinted thenff.com on Wednesday that they expect a full house at the big game, and that a train of top-drawer dignitaries could include members of the Royal Family.

Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr told thenff.com: “This is good news for myself and the entire team. Akinwunmi added: “We decided to be strategic in our choice of opponents for the Super Eagles leading to the World Cup, and in total agreement with the preferences of the Technical Adviser. That is why we opted for England. We played Argentina (in November 2017) without even knowing we were going to be in the same group at the Finals.”

Three –time African champions, Nigeria came from two goals down to defeat two –time world champions and reigning world vice champions, Argentina 4-2 in that match in Krasnodar on 14th November 2017.

The Super Eagles already have a confirmed date with Poland in Warsaw on 23rd March. Other dates are 27th March and 27th May.

People banging on about club form lose sight of the fact that the status of the club a player plays for and/or his stats in a season do not correlate with his national team form.

For instance, Miroslav Klose was an absolute beast for Germany at 5 or 6 major tournaments. He even ended up being the record World Cup goal scorer of all time. However, I don’t think he ever scored up to 20 goals in a season. The five members of football's law-making body, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), are gathering at FIFA's headquarters in Switzerland for their annual business meeting. This meeting will set the agenda for IFAB's annual general meeting, which is where changes to football's laws are approved.

Football is arguably the last of the major global sports to fully embrace video technology but, having finally decided to trial video assistant referees (VARs) in 2016, the decision at IFAB's annual general meeting in Zurich on March 2 is now widely believed to be a formality.

Those trials have taken place in 15 national leagues, including the Bundesliga, Major League Soccer and Serie A, as well as several FIFA competitions, and their results have been analysed by Belgium's top university KU Leuven.

IFAB will publish the most recent data from the pilots in the week before the Jan. 22 meeting, and they are expected to show that decisions have been corrected once every three games and the average time taken on each review has been greatly reduced as officials have become more used to the system.

A spokesperson for IFAB told Press Association Sport these results will be discussed at the meeting and a vote will be held to provide an "indicative recommendation" to the AGM.

As a reflection of British football's role in the game's development, IFAB is comprised of the football associations of the four home nations, each with a single vote, and FIFA, which has four votes and the deciding vote in the result of a tie.

The Jan. 22 meeting will be chaired by FIFA's general secretary Fatma Samoura and attended by the chief executives of the English, Northern Irish, Scottish and Welsh FAs, as well as technical experts.

The Irish Football Association (IFA) has already said it will be voting for VARs after Northern Ireland's World Cup hopes were ended when Corry Evans was wrongly adjudged to have handled the ball in November's play-off against Switzerland.

IFAB's plan for video reviews is that they are only used in four circumstances: to decide if goals should be awarded, penalty decisions, red-card incidents and rare cases of mistaken identity.

Super Falcons to face France in April

Nigeria Football Federation President, Amaju Pinnick has revealed that the country’s national female team, the Super Falcons will be busy in 2018. Falcons The NFF boss has already confirmed that the reigning African Queens will play France in an international friendly on April 4, 2018. Pinnick who refuted claims that the Federation has chosen to neglect the women team also disclosed that efforts are currently being intensified to get the Falcons another credible opponent during the FIFA free window when they are playing France.

“The France friendly billed for April is already confirmed, we have signed so everything is in place, we are also working to see if we can get another team so they can have something like a double-header.” The NFF boss disclosed. The Super Falcons, after their conquest at the last AWCON in 2016 were rendered inactive all through the outgoing 2017 year.

Minister of State for Aviation Hadi Sirika yesterday said the new Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport terminal would cost additional $400million to be completed.


Sirika who disclosed this while inspecting the new terminal expressed regretted that government was unable to keep to the promise to deliver the project by December 2017. He attributed the delay to some challenges as regards additional work that will ensure that the terminal can be used as intended.


The minister said: “Unfortunately some of the components are very complex. They will delay the job. Some of them are from the foundation problems. A classical examples is the problem of linking the old terminal to the new building."


According to him, the project was implemented through a $500million loan from China and Nigeria is giving a counterpart funding of $100million, making it $600million. “For us to get to the end of this project, it would take an excess of $400million."


Sirika said the government would have to think of how to utilize the airport despite its shortcomings. He noted that it would take huge amount of money to provide sewer, water, electricity, extra aprons, move the control tower, provide fire service and link the old airport to the new one."


He recalled that during the procurement processes when construction commenced, there was problem with the foundation. "Most of the inadequacies are not small work to be done but the intent of government is to speed up the work so the facility can be utilized very soon. Sirika said the master plan of the airport was a modular style to progress with increase in passenger traffic but the procurement had distorted it.


The minister said the contractor had assured him that by March 2018, they would make some parts of the airport to be functional.The representative of the China Civil Engineering Construction Company said the project was 87percent completed.
