HealthRe: Ebola: Lagos Govt Identifies 59 Contacts With dead Liberian Victim by phineas: 8:52am On Jul 29, 2014
Personally,I really don't believe the lagos state goverment or Nigeria is on top of any matter till I see a list of fully equipped designated ebola treatment centers in the state and nation.

For lassa fever its all the way in irrua.meaning if anyone gets lassa fever now say in onitsha, and has to be quarantined properly and treated by a proper protected team,u refer to irrua, till then every one gets exposed.

So where are these centers in lagos? Don't just give us nos show us the centers. How many health practitoners are been trained with rapid diagnositic sets if there's any to quickly identify its ebola not malaria?pls bear in mind its not only this man that has travelled into nigeria from liberia and other endemic regions that's probably infected...

Lastly epid teaches when u start seeing presentations in the hospitals, there's deff more with the symp and disease in the community.

I know Nigeria's attitude to epidemics and illnesses first hand, true we have superbly trained and knowledgable teams and plans but political will is ussually zero.so ussually it takes WHO,msf or other foreign agencies to come in with funds using the existing team before we see a real impact.

So we know this is not eye service and propaganda as ussual,I ask where are these quarantine centers in the nation and how equipped are they? How many ebola rapid diagnosis labs /kits have we set up and how many health practitioners are aware where to send this samples? How many protective gears and teams do we have? What's the protocol for the public to follow when we suspect ebola?

Those are the real questions.no propaganda pls.

Am I the only one that saw "100" protective wears? So that will last 2 teams of 5 what? 10 days? Most likely donated too.

Nigeria still doesn't get it,health care isn't cheap.True each costs like 20,000 but prventive measures mean we should have more than enough for the first stages of an outbreak if it ever occurs, because that's the important stage,we shouldn't be hearing there are no more suits, manage or reuse suits, those in healthcare know what I mean. For the population of lagos let real preparations be made, not eye service papper arrangements/propaganda.

The protocol with such outbreaks usuusally is for the poplulace not to take the patients to the hospital but to call the designated centers nos to come pick infected pple in their protective suits,or if they must ,they could take the patients to such designated specially errected centres Ideally.

We don't need an outbreak to establish this protocols or preparations, with real places, people, and realistic figures, also to inform the public on all this.

My point is there is no shortcut to health expenditure, and the time to spend that money,to trully prepare is now.

Great thread,

Common pple sheath your swords, not all fulani's are bad, that's an evil generalization, its like saying all yoruba's are ritualists, all ibo's are drug lords, and all americans are serial killers...

This thread is about celebrating a pple,so if u have some good exp with this pple or sumtin u like about them, now will be a good time to voice up,pls show the world all fulani's are not bad.and that alone can sow the seeds of future peace

modified
All good fulanis should help weed out the bandits, the same fulani that lived in peace with communities for years can do something about this scourge thats attempting to ruin their name and relations with other tribes. For the sake of future generations all Fulanis must stand up against the rougue ones and weed them out

I hope this was helpful.
RomanceRe: Having One Last Fling Before Marrying Him - Why It's A Bad Idea by phineas:
So let me see if I get this thread, you all want the bride or groom to sit at home the night before their d day, watching tv?

I think the word you're looking for is debauchery not "fling" per say...

Not all bach eve's or bachelorette parties have that element,I've attended bach eves where friends of the groom male and female all had drinks and just talked about the guy into the nite, talked about politics, history, stuff the guy had done in the past, his ex gfriends(or lack of them) girls he tried dating and this babe in particular ... Nice classy restrauant too, others had some dancing and drinking till the groom passed out,for most of us,its great networking and opportunity to meet "our friends other single friends" they become known faces the fflg day at the wedding. For me its the part of the Nigerian weddings I love the most, cos its "we we " and a few new faces all in our age bracket partying with ok people.

The fllg day u "give to caesers what is ceasers" and comply with all the formal requirement of the naija wedding and reception,u act mature while at it...

Most plle will tell you this event with friends the nite before is the part of their wedding they enjoyed the most.so by all means don't let this thread stop anyone from throwing a bachelor or bachelorette party for their friends, and don't give it a "bad name" either the idea is a great one and does not necesarrily entail debauchery.
Nairaland GeneralRe: Nigerian Troops Kill Sheik Zakzaky’s Son, Others In Zaria by phineas: 8:08am On Jul 26, 2014
Everyone has a right to protest, but this one was completely insensitive.

Wrong time- within days of twin bomblasts in one city, wrong place, wrong topic.

If they trully had noble intentions, they could have held candles in their mosques and taken pictures,or held placards on a large field and taken pictures, that would have been deemed peaceful, but to troop out enmass in a city with heavy military presence few days after a major bombing, sorry 2, to protest a foreign policy/military invasion....

I'm most postive that protest was not authorized. That act was not only capable of breaching the public peace,it was also stupid and unpatroitic. The organizers ought to be chastized seriously to serve as a deterent for such in future.

HealthRe: Nma Strike, The Nurses' Perspective. by phineas:
I've learnt to always focus on matters arising, that way u spend energy on what is important.

This issue of other proffesionals becoming consultants in the NMA strike is limited to the teaching hospital setting.NMA is saying in the teaching hospital you cannot have a nurse, lab scientist,or pharmacist appointed consultant.

In non clinical medecine and yes there is non clinical medecine it can pass, like agencies such as unicef, who,FHI,health managent org etc employ anyone whose services they need for a specified period as consultants to the org.meaning a lot of UN staff who work on 3months 2 years or more contracts are consultants to the org or project.

Transpose to clinical medecine,a patient comes to the emmergency unit with fractures head injury and let's say some degree of elevation in his blood sugar. The Accident and emmergency unit assigns a consultant to him primarily (remember we hope he gets discharged from this dr's care someday, this consulatnt writes a letter inviteing other drs from orthopaedics -for his fractures, neurosurgery -for his head injury,endocrinology-for his diabetes) all consultants come with their team to join him and manage this patient.

Now in this clinical setting,Nurses want to be appointed as consultant and the question is what specialized service Are we bringing in a nurse and allied professional for for a short duration to offer to this patient,is there anywhere in the world Nurses are employed as "consultants" in the TEACHING/tetiary clinical hospital

For the public to wade into this matter without having been in this world its understandable to get swayed by emotions, but this is not about emotions its about the fabric that holds the system in place,Nurses cannot become consultants in the teaching hospitals, and they should not be cmd in tetiary centers in nigeria.

When all this is over,I suggest a reality TV show in our tetiary hospital sys with the patients faces blurred to depict the true picture of the Nigerian tetiary health care, its loooong overdue,we'll see the workload, the sacrifices, the fustration,we'll see its a thankless job, only then should the public start to wade in.

This matter is simple, someone decided to stand for justice, she has said she would count the days till they are found, our goverment as usual would have prefered we forgot this saga,This woman said no.

I applaud her courage, and to all who malign her and her cause, remember when u fetch a firewood with ants,u invite lizards to your home,by doing this (supporting and endorsing this great evil done to this children and their families) you stand on the side of wrong,u endorse their pain, and I pray in so doing u do not set urself and ur loved ones up for karma's judgement . Victorazie and all,be carefull what words u sow in this matter.
HealthRe: JOHESU Press Release on the NMA STRIKE by phineas:
The situation in the Nigerian health sector would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad.the real problem is there are no clearly defined work description with standard action for lapses from erring parties.

You see in the hospitals, the nurses refuse to do some of their duties, ask them to set things the patient needs they won't,join the ward rounds they refuse, bring things you need for surgery no way even when its available, take vital signs of patients they don't and they proceed to write normal all over the place, many examples abound...

The Drs over the yrs have found ways around this lapses without sanctioning culprits making their jobs (nurses et all) dispensable over the years. This is one of the reason the patchy health system is still standing, the ingenuinety and dedication of the dr's,now the overworked House officer takes all the vital signs, takes all samples and takes them to the lab, ideally lab scientist and porters work ,he also retrieves all result if not u wait forever, the dr asks the patient to procure everything including nasal prongs, cotton wool and spirit and basically does the job of everybody else so the system can work.

Then came this brillant idea to make nurses consultant nurses,( Principal Nursing officer and Chief Nursing officer,Director of Nursing services, this already existing posts wouldn't do),it had to be consultant nurse, afterall outside medcine, pple with just bsc where employed to be consultants.(Whereas in medecine the title describes the rltship btw patient and his managing dr.so its a question of whose patient is this, who takes the responsibility absolutely, that's the person under whose name the patient is admitted, who sanctions all management details, takes all the glory and the absolute fall guy when there's trouble, remember he can loose his licence)

Then wardrounds became different, the Registrars already pressed for time is told to wait to commence his rounds, the "consultant nurse" is on her round,The consultant plastic surgeon gives an order on wound management, the consultant nurse says she's been practicing for 30yrs this isn't the way "we do it",she's "consultant" now remember she gives "her nurses" a different instruction of cause they obey their "consultant" ,dr's orders overuled.pls transpose to other dept. and then they insist. "its our turn to be chief medical director of the hospital". (Above examples are all real incidences by the way)

Those are the matters arising, add to it the drs feel disgruntled they work long unnofficial unaknowledged hrs, with no offs whislt the others work shifts with off duty hrs etc.

Let all work duties be spelt out in gold with stringent protocols and sanctions for eRring parties, and you'll see a stronger saner health system.

Banky is one of Nigeria's most talented artists who keeps re-inventing himself.

Great concept though and coming from Banky W,impressive.

They should deport their sorry arse, all of them, their confiscated goods should not be sold but rather given to charity all over the world.

As for our govt, perchance anyone in power sees this thread, they should know their commitment to national growth and development includes making an example of these ones that have been caught. It should not be bussiness as ussual.

Pls arrest all 25 when they return, conduct a thorough investigation to know those who were coerced or not,and use them to set a public example (not a pat on the wrist something more stringent )that Nigeria will not condone this soiling of our name and image by such rifrafs abroad....

Perhaps it will be a deterent to others and it will show the nations we are not "all the same".

So when do these deportees arrive?,names and faces pls.
HealthRe: Deceased’s Relations Beat-up Nurse, For Administering "Wrong Medication" by phineas: 1:55pm On Nov 06, 2013
Its a case of assault against Nigerian health workers that's been condoned by the soceity for yrs finally reaching its peak.Health workers have suffered perpertual verbal assault @ the hands of Nigerians and physical assault like this isn't new.

The popular story of the nasarawa police shooting and beating drs who explained they had no space in their morgues and where told to invent space, forgetting they had full responsibilty to protect the bodies they had accepted in their custody, many cases abound of which I really don't care to go into.

Most health workers who have and care aboout dignity of self simply refuse to practice in Nigeria. If she administered wrong medication or not a panel should have been set up and investigated, the medical profession must rise to the responsibility of protecting its workers in the country by ensuring stringent standards and protocols for all matters arising with sanctions where necesary.

FamilyRe: Priest Aids Wife To Build Without Husband's Knowledge by phineas:
I have a big smile on my face as I write this,I'll usually read amused and move on but I feel compelled to write this for the sake of any unfortunate people pleasing Nigerian woman out there reading this.....

Have your own assests completely seperate from your husbands.Either you do it with his permission or not is completely @ ur discretion but be sure it happens. If he's the bullying type hide it well beneath layers of legal paperwork and shadow names and procedures

Its the same Nigeria that the properties that's supposed to belong to the mans family in his absence gets shared by the inlaws,or the happens a lot scenario where he can kicks his wife out for the most flimsy reasons,or when she's 50 for a younger option, and my personal favourite where the guy can marry a 2nd or 3rd wife to..... Share or simply take over all you've saved, sacrificed and suffered so hard to aquire.

if you're not working, use his money,if you're working, use yours. If you agree to what's mine is yours and what is yours is mine, then make sure the legal papers do not bear mr and mrs xyz but mr george and mrs rose xyz.anybody can be mrs xyz only u can be mrs rose xyz u get?.Take a cue from the supposedly rich and powerful bianca still having to fight inlaws despite a will and all, aderinokun of gtb with the wife putting up the fight with "the others"a word for the wise

Lastly If we all stopped been hypocrites and stand to address the ills in our soceity, then no one should really begrudge a woman having her own assets,if she hides it from an unapproving husband and gets "caught" all the shouts of send her out butresses the very need for their seperating investments.

My point,a true man should know in truth, his wifes money is her money and what she does with, her bussiness so long as the family is safe and fed which is his duty.

Unfortunately this may expose him to more threats from the terrorists, those of us who trust God should please pray for him and his family, also hoping the kenyan goverment will deem it wise to offer him security if he stays on in the country.

tochimas: I am so short of words, don't even know what to say, I am a Christian, a strong one but I refuse to judge the entire Muslim, I hate these animals that terrorize others in the name of islam. I fact they nearly made me to start hating on Muslims. But when I remember my youth service at bauchi before book haram became fully operational, there are this group my host use to warn me about, they use to pray and preach around 9-10pm in the night close to the market place, the only developed place in the town of alkaleri, he told me never to go near them, that they only preach hate, extremism, according to him, they are the bad denomination. Then there are another group that came every morning to preach love nd co -existence in the same market place. My opinion is that it is only the same Muslims that stop this Insane ones.I remember when there was crisis in bauch then, we don't even have anywhere to run to as gombe was under attack too, we were holed up in the lodge, ready to enter bush at the slightest alarm, don't blame us, one idiot extremist has said that enough people were not killed in bauch as a result of advent of phones and onitsha has retaliated and killed Hausas. He wanted to continue at alkaleri there. I can't forget the stance of our host community, I was privy to everything because I was teaching an extra moral classes to the family of one of the top guys in the local govt then.they came to the lodge to assure us to be calm, that we were safe, I was so afraid still, so I and my friend went to his house to sleep, I am already welcomed there anyway as I also teach the wives. He told us that they had meeting and had spread the words in their way, that anybody that tried any shit in this alkaleri will be touched down to his family not just him, they were not bluffing oh, there was this strange look on his face when he said that, we were even afraid of what They were capable of doing, funny?and true to their words, nothing happened, weeks later when I was telling him how afraid we were that we might loose our lives here, he simply laughed and said nobody would have tried cos their threat was not an empty one. It is not just them but I had had dealing with various Muslims, some were neighbor both here in Lagos, I simply don't know how to start hating them cos they are Muslim. But Muslims have to stand up and their their dirty job, they are the ones to fish and flush out bad eggs in their mist. They are the ones that should fight.
I like your story,I've enjoyed the hospitality, the humble openness and warmth of the north,I also have been given such assurances, but thankfully it has never been tested. many have not been so lucky,But I believe when we share stories such as this, others may hear and stand like this when pple gang up to kill foriegners in their land, they also may realize we expect it from them and when they fail it is not just the perpertuators but the community that failed.

Its like stories you tell in the village by the fire at night to teach the kids a culture and a better way, that we are our brothers keeper.pple we need to stop preaching hate and it starts with everyone of us,we need to hold our brethren accountable, muslims and hausas it starts with you,for peace to reign we must be our brothers keeper,no matter how annoying he is,and that is the message I hope we somehow take in all this.... Somehow.

Omotolaaraujo: People have to grow food, or earn money to buy food from a good source. That is the cure for malnutrition. Agriculture and jobs.
The data is most likely acurate and true, and not just for jigawa but for most states in the north. The data is from rural north and its a reflection of their lack of education, and poverty.

These are the pple that produce food the south eat,so its not an agricultural problem. They have soya, rice, millet, wheat, vegetables, pepper etc. They just don't give their kids the right meals, mostly because they are not englightened, and the scenario of 7-10 kids per mother Multiplied by 4 u gives the family pic, poverty becomes the issue at that stage.

One must truly commend all agencies and individuals that have taken it upon themselves to eradicate this menace,as so many lives have been saved by their contribution,However the true solution to this is compulsory female education.
CareerRe: Basic Medical Science In Nigeria - The Way Forward? by phineas: 4:43pm On Sep 19, 2013
The problem with undergraduates in Nigeria is simple, you have no carrear mentors.

Who builds a house without first counting the cost? Most expect to graduate and a job fall in their laps by chance, connections or luck.truth is what you need is adequate planning and using your spare undergrad time to align with opportunities and free courses that abound some on the internet this will give you a competitive edge in the area u want to work in and you start from that 100l not after NYSC.

BMS physiology, microbiology and biochem are in high demand in many org,and there is no week you don't see adverts from such org for vacancies.from quality assurance in med,to biomedics,to data management,to disease surveillance, trainings, etc also the fed govt ,state govt,NPHDA, amongst others and there are some that pay better than clinical consultants of 20yrs will ever hope to earn in Nig.....there ur degree isn't discriminated so long as you have basic medical knowledge and exp neccesarry for the job.

My point is rather than been pesimistic from the onset, the way forward is to meet snr ones that have grad and been working for yrs they'll tell you what they have learnt about the industry, the opportunities that are available and what they would require so u start planning towards it.another way is to check the papers not for a job but for the requirements for those posts that BMS can apply for, meet up with pple from those org ask questions, start planning.

Avoid neg pple and those striving for roles not suited to them, find succesfull pple in your field that earn well and ask them the way,Network like mad starting now is the key, those relationships will come in usefull sometime in future, cos a lot of openings never get advertized but spread by word of mouth in the same setting and you only tell those you know.

if you want to travel, the time to start planning is also 100l.

My 2 piece.
PoliticsRe: 102 Arrested By In Niger For Refusing Polio Vaccines. by phineas: 10:42am On Sep 18, 2013
The rejection of polio vaccines by northerners should be criminalized. However, the right path would be for the state to sue them and let such parents have their day in court explaining why they rejected vaccination for their kids.

Its not lack of information,u see a lot of funds go into community mobilization and awareness with involvement of religious and political leaders.why just the north. The south has no recorded cases and the people are not sterile yet. This same Nigerians are given this vaccines before been allowed to travel for hajj why don't they reject it,why are the other islamic nations not rejecting it.

Its beyond conspiracy theories, its about an attitude of defiance to state that has left nigeria as the reserviour for polio that was almost eradicated save for us and has now begun to spread again to other countries. It must be curbed.

Also On no account can we compare Nigeria to the developed west where access to health is easy,The sad nigerian under five mortality statistics we hear about is mainly as a result of figures from this north, where pple have 7- 10 children and can't afford health should they fall sick and still refuse vaccination.so we hear of preventable deaths from measles, chest infections, diarrhea, etc They should @ least tow the path of prevention that has been offered free They refuse mostly due to nonchalance and u hear a woman lost 3-4 kids from 10 deliveries. No big deal she still has 5-8 kids anyway.

That is the attitude of the north, its reckless endagerment, maybe they shouldn't be arrested, but the state must sue such parents for this for the trend to stop, someone must stand for the right of those children.
PoliticsRe: Lagos Police Command Rank Top In Africa by phineas: 3:06pm On Sep 11, 2013
There are always bad elements in every organization but the lagos state police is a very organized group. Now for all who don't know, all organizations with expatraite communities have security units that work closely with the police as such wherever they sense any trouble their security unit informs the policeand they turn up in any part of lagos it may be happening at.

I have experienced the police arriving in 15mins of boys just attempting to start trouble and the sirens alone did the trick before they arrived, also the provision of armoured Personel Carriers by the state for the police aided their ability and confidence to combat crime effectively so they actually turn up.

Add the sea patrol unit, everyone who cares to know will realize for the population of lagos its crime stat will probably be the best in Africa.

Give them some kudos pple, their system is also a victim of the Nigerian story, but they have recorded some success despite all, let's say something good when there is something good to be said.

To all the men and women of the police force who try to do their jobs properly, despite poor motivation from the state,I say thank you,and pray one day the nation will reward you.

No one should bvlame the doctors till they ave the facts of the case. That said,I know Nigerian Doctors perform nothing short of miracles with the results they deliver given the conditions they work with,Pls note it is not a training deficit cos almost all young drs this days have pasdsed the rigorous forign certification exams and are just bidding their time to leave, even they don't want to stay,so for the few that work under these absymal conditions, they should be appreciated not run down every opprtunity.

Now to the maternal and morbidity stat a lot of factors contribute to that, unsafe abortion, bleeding from flabby uterus from mothers who have had mutiple births, infections etc all these takes a high percentage as opposed to mothers actually dying from incompetence,if you all care to take a close look at the system u'll see the rot is deeper, its the LGA's not having Drs,its one corper to an entire General hospital for all cases, overstretched ,overworked with no resourcers,no light,no ambulance, someone said no ventilators,I laugh,Its no disinfectant,no cotton wool, its reusing disposables, its absymal work conditions, with no life and no money for the staff.

My point, don't blame the drs or nurses, yopur foreign drs will get worse results with said conditions.Infact I heard of a forien crew that refused to work with the best hospitals in nigeria as at 2yrs ago sayoing they can't work under those circumstances,I laughed.cos u see, they had not even seen public health care, they would ave been scared.

let us ask the right questions, perhaps the system will get more light shed on it that way.but pls respect your drs that stayed,me I advise all drs I know, leave, you ave a thankless job.

1-that they originated from the east,

Oral yoruba traditions say they came from mecca,

An emir gave a story to that effect that they were from the lineage of a man called ya rooba, hence the name yoruba who was from the east.

Similarities between ife art works and nok art work suggests either the east was Nok or Nok was a migratory route.

ancient history suggests ancient eyptians were actually black hence the possibility of the migration story, also linguistic similarities in pronunciation and meaning of many words inclding cup, water, daily words about 400 I counted then, have been found between egypt and yorubas as well as their ancient gods.

2-the ondos ekitis and one other state claim not to be part of the oduduwa clan, but that the migrants met them in the land.yet to find more reading material on that part of history.

3-lastly the esoteric myth that oduduwa came from heaven with a mission, and took over his principals authority when he became drunk collecting the chicken he was send with and thereby became the one who completed the mission, this myth has been debunked so many times.
However it was possible they said the yorubas were speaking in proverbs or parables, another cultural similarity to the east.

My point is there's a lot of information available on this subject with the burden of scientific evidence supporting the first 2,for all those interested some great scientific materials are also available on the internet.I'll find the link to them and post later.
