If you can use those statements to explain why religion is logical, then I can also use those statements to explain why any fairy tale is logical and why all errors are not real errors but only metaphors. If that is the case then I can assert that we are all, in fact, perfect. Superb! |

Truth234: IMF is a confused international organisation with little to no real knowledge of the local economy. Imagine, the same IMF that said the Naira would plunge to 1000 against the US dollar without free floating it is now saying Naira is overvalued by 10-20%. Add that difference to the current exchange rate, you will get about 420/$. So what happened to the 1000/$ projection?
In Seun Kuti's voice, IMF, International ModaFcker. Actually , you are the one who seems most confused. From you post, your knowledge of economics and currency dynamics appear wanting. The IMF were being diplomatic and circumspect by saying that the Naira is 20% overvalued. The N1000/$ is still a more than likely possibility in the very near future , despite all these reactionary and wasteful shenanigans by the CBN. The thrust of the IMF message is that the government should do away with ad-hocism when it comes to economic management. They should stop looking at daily fluctuations in Naira exchange rates, and have a long term focus of strengthening the structural imbalances of our economy. An orderly depreciation of Naira to it's true economic equilibrium rate , a soft landing, would be much much better than a violent disorderly depreciation that is inevitable, and which would effectively disorganize every sector of the economy in a very short time. |

In Igbo traditional religion, order of spiritual importance is ranked thus 1. Chukwu 2. Deities 3. Ancestors and 4. Chi - personal god or your moral compass (conscience)
Once again, good topic. Correction Sir. The word deity means any supernatural being that is worshiped or venerated. But , your hierarchy of Igbo gods or deities are correct. Chukwu is at the top of the pantheon of deities, just like EL was at the top of the Canaanite pantheon, where he sat in judgement of the lesser deities, including and especially Yahweh. |

marshborn: Chukwu
Chukwu is the supreme being of the Igbo religion. In the Igbo pantheon, Chukwu is the source of all other Igbo deities, and is responsible for assigning them their different tasks. The Igbo people believe that all things come from Chukwu, who brings the rains necessary for plants to grow and controls everything on earth and the spiritual world. They believe Chukwu to be an infinitely powerful, undefinable, supreme deity encompassing everything in space and space itself.
Linguistic studies suggest that the name "Chukwu" or "Chukouuee" is a portmanteau of the Igbo words "Chi" ("spiritual being" ) and "Ukwu" ("great in size" ).
According to the Igbo people from the south-eastern region of Nigeria, Chineke is the creator of the world and everything good in it along with rain, trees, and other plants. Chukwu is a supreme God represented by the sun. The ancient God is not humanized in Igbo tradition belief. Because the Igbo deities Amadioha and Ikenga are masculine, Chukwu is assumed to be male.
Many Igbo Christians refer to the Christian God as Chukwu as well. The Igbo believe it is impossible for humans to conceive of the unlimited power of Chukwu. Many Igbo dialects refer to God by names such as "Chukwu", "Chiokike", or "Obasi."
There are five aspects of Chukwu:
Chukwu - the first force and existence of all beings. Anyanwu - symbolic meaning of the sun. The sun reveals everything so Chukwu is the source of knowledge and the author of all knowledge. Agbala - the fertility of Earth, its people, and its spiritual world full of sub-deities. Chi - a sub-deity functioning as a personal, spiritual guide. Okike - creator of laws that govern the visible and invisible. Good work. |

Naturalized: When you say facts/irrefutable facts doesn't that basically mean what you know to be true at that point in time? In this case that human cannot shape-shift? What if..What if in the slightest shapeshifting were possible but cannot the accounted yet for by the laws of physics? You agree with me that the purpose of science is to question known beliefs, create a new conclusions (which may in turn be a law) until someone else comes along to refute the claim. For years many scientist believed the earth to be flat? Do we call them stupid?
I have made my stance about religion clear, its all dogmatic, or as they say 'faith', but it doesn't mean that what science knows to be true right now may actually not be found (by science) to be wrong. Kindly name any of the world's scientists that believed that earth the was flat. The earth was believed to be flat in prescience eras. If something cannot be proven by known scientific methods, then based on WHAT does a person like you believe that thing ? If the scientific method has , over the past centuries , clearly proven itself as the pre-eminent arbiter of reality and existence, then , again I Ask, what is the point or benefits of tethering one's mind or worldviews on non-scientifically provable superstitions ? Thirdly, I might ask, why do beliefs in non-scientific phenomena flourish in poor, scientifically backward societies? How come we don't hear of old women turning into birds or cats in Europe, America, Canada, Switzerland,Singapore, etc, but only in third world, semi-primitive basket case Nations infested with middle East shi.t religions ? I have quoted this many many times, and I repeat it again. It is better, and human history will testify, to begin with doubts, questions and uncertainty, and then gradually arrive at facts , certainty and truth than it is to begin with certainty and truth, and then later end up with doubts. When the later happens, cognitive dissonance becomes one's best friend. This showcases the difference between science and belief/faith. |

This one happened in my village just 2 weeks ago. The young man has not even been buried yet. He climbed an electric pole to reconnect light and was electrocuted. According to witnesses, they took him to a local mortuary. About an hour later, the mortuary called to say that his hands were twitching and that he may still be alive ,and possibly revived if taken to a good hospital as soon as possible. Guess what happened next ? The family, rather than rush him to a good hospital, they called their pastor, who instructed them to bring the man to the Church for an all night prayers and vigil. This they did. Again, according to witnesses, the body was still twitching for most of the night until about 2am when it finally stopped. The stupidity of religion can never overstated. |
Christianity Etc › Re: The Irony Of Religion by plaetton: 7:27am On Mar 29, 2017 |
RosaConsidine: While this is certainly the truth, we can't fault religion for it. Religion did not refuse to fix bad roads - people did. Religion did not refuse to fix crumbling schools - human beings did. Religion did not even ask for these shiny buildings, neither did it erect them - again, it's the product of human minds and hands.
I think why religion takes so much precedence over rational thought and hard work in this country is because, let's face it - it's much easier and we are an incredibly lazy AND hypocritical bunch. It's easier to go to church to pray that God makes our leaders do the right thing than to hit the streets and actually demand for better leadership. It's easier to ask God tp help you get good grades than to study hard and learn. It's easier to believe that God did tell that pastor to tell us to bring money for a private jet than to confront the pastor and his ostentatious lifestyle. It's easier to believe that some people in our villages our manipulating our destinies and are the reason for our failure than to admit that we've done a lot of things wrong that are causing things to go wrong in our lives. So for the average Nigerian, subconsciously, religion is the easiest option as against rational thought, planning and real hard work.
I'll finish with a little case study I've observed: some pastors in church programs I've attended would come on the pulpit and say God said that s certain number of people should bring a certain amount of money and in one week, God will return that amount to them tenfold. Of course, like MMM, people would troop out. Who doesn't want more money for doing basically no work at all. Come meet our god, the money doubler! I found it curious that of all these situations, not one of these people have come back to testify that God indeed doubled their money or returned it tenfold. Does it say God does not have the power to do that? No, but if I were God I wouldn't double their money either because I can tell that almost all of them are giving because they want huge returns without doing any actual work. Till Nigerian stop being greedy and treating religion like a ponzi scheme, these scenarios would continue to happen. Excellent piece. |
Christianity Etc › Re: The Irony Of Religion by plaetton: 2:15pm On Mar 27, 2017 |
fratermathy: One irony I can't seem to wrap my mind around is that of the link between religion, moral depravity and social deviance. At the risk of generalising, It is evident that the most religious societies in the world have the higher percentage of morally bankrupt persons. Taking Nigeria for instance, we have a very religious population of more than 140 million persons. Almost every Nigerian subscribes to one religious belief or another and yet the country still remains in the shadows of darkness, corruption, obscenity, lewdity, callousness, and a gamut of social vices and indecent behaviours. On Sundays, "slay queens" go to Church and dance even more than the pastor. That same evening, the "slay queen" puts on scanty clothing and probably heads for a secret rendezvous with the same pastor. It begs the question of what moral influence religion really has over Nigerians. Is it that religion brings out the worst in people? Is it an issue of hypocrisy? Or are we just naturally so?
Let us leave Nigeria and proceed to highly religious nations like India, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, etc. These nations, in no particular order, rank highest in the demand for internet pornography. As we all know, terrorism has become the norm to most of these nations. Other forms of moral depravity and social deviance abound. Violence, rape, hypocrisy, etc, are rife.
Progressive nations such as the USA, UK, Germany, Russia, etc, have a much less religious population yet meaningful development takes place, moral depravity is controlled and other social vices are minimal. We can easily say that these nations have better systems and that depravity is not a product of religion whatsoever but is that really true?
When the USA and Russia were sending men to the moon, Nigerians were still busy building churches, mosques and burning shrines. When USA and Russia were advancing technology and science, Nigerians were busy catching witches and wizards and casting out demons and spirits. When advanced nations are thinking of Mars, Nigerians are still stuck on myths and legends, and the likes. When other nations are advancing their democracies and demanding for better leadership, Nigerians prefer to complain and "pray about it".
Religion is good, no doubt. It has its values, for sure! However, when a society becomes too religious, the paradox of moral depravity and social deviance begin to kick in. Until we stop being over-religious, we may never get to the Nigerian utopia.
- Iroro Orhero <literarymathy[at]gmail.com> I recently travelled by road through the Southwest, South South and Southeast , something I hadn't done in a long while. Aside from bad roads, four very consistent images or memes that bogged me throughout my travels were dirtiness, poverty , dilapidated schools and big Churches, as if the four were interlocked in a four-way symbiotic relationship. In a country where every poor village or Hamlet proudly showcase their big, shiny, well-maintained Churches side by side with dilapidated primary and secondary schools, there surely cannot be a good and bright future for such a country. |
