You assumed that there are so many educated people in Nigeria. How many people have first degree in Nigeria? How many have higher degrees? The percentage is not more than 10% if up to. Even in the so-called Western Nigeria, illiteracy level is still high. The problem is a disfunction in the economy.

Politics › Re: Jonathan Plans Floating Cities In Niger Delta by porka: 9:59pm On May 23, 2010
It is certain that there are plans to overhaul the infrastructure of the Niger Delta. What is not sure is whether the plans include floating cities. These plans did not start yesterday, it started about two administrations ago. Yaradua accelerated it by creating an ND ministry.

And if the plans include floating cities, the most important thing is to get it started and make sure it doesnt derail. Murtala Muhammed started Abuja more than 30 years ago, they are still building it as we speak. Gowon and Obasanjo and Babangida built the bridges in Lagos, Fashola is still building as we speak.

Let Jonathan get a concrete plan for ND and the next generation will take it from there and this will not stop your electoral reforms - so-called. Murtala spent six month and he gave us an idea for Abuja, the master plan was drawn by Obasanjo, Shagari started construction.

Yes, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Britain, France, Hong Kong and China did not have electoral reforms before building their cities. Electoral reforms and city building are not mutually exclusive.

Someone said Nigerians are socialist, I can't agree more. Socialist dont want to plan anything and they are averse to constructive ideas. They want government to solve their problems by MAGIC. What is bad if there are massive construction sites all over Nigeria? People dont even know that many jobs would be created through that. Many people working in Bharain, Abu Dhabi and DubaI today are in the construction industry.

Must we just shoot everything down because of electoral reforms. With all the electoral reforms in the world, political parties will still not prepare for elections, they will rather write inciting articles in the newspapers and complain of rigging after the polls.  And then start another round of demand for more electoral reforms.

OLAADEGBU:
Yes they show herbalists but did you watch what becomes of them? Mount Zion movies are an evangelistic outreach to people who have been stuck in the deception of these babalawos, they show what true Christians who are missionaries encounter when they go on evangelistic outreaches in remote villages. Religious people who stay in the cities don't know the spiritual battles being fought to set our people free. If you truly watch their films you will realise that God always prevail over evil.
Religion cannot set anyone free. No religion can obliterate the blight of poverty and disease and man-made problems. It is education. There are no religions in Africa, there are pseudo-religious enterprises. The so-called religious enterprises are a burden on these hapless villagers. What they need is how to grow their crops and get better yields, how to save their excess income and not squander it in ostentatious living, how to avoid or treat snake bite by wearing long boots, how to avoid tetanus infection and not call it attack, how to send their children to school to better their lots and not thinking of them jamming luck someday, how to protect themselves from adverse weather condition through weather information, how to avoid mosquito bites through proper usage of mosquito nets, how to organize themselves into civil societies to confront their representatives and claim their civil rights, how to take advantage of civil arbitration and not take laws into their hands by resorting to jungle justice, how not to have too many children that they cannot take care of. Put simply, how to master their environment. Religion cannot do it. It’s science that does that. The early missionaries in Africa and Asia used this simple technique to develop their host communities, unfortunately since they left, we have gone back to our primitive ways.
Christianity Etc › Re: Why Do Yoruba Movies Promote Babalawos? by porka: 7:19pm On May 18, 2010
To show how entrenched this stupidity and backwardness is, I heard a story of a professor of economics from Africa, who said money supply cannot be tracked because it’s difficult getting the data of those monies that come from RITUALS. Can you imagine that? A professor who was trained in the science and techniques of economics said MONEY RITUALISTS have impact in monetary policy. He didn’t say currency counterfeiters, he directly mentioned money ritualists, how they do it he didn’t explain, probably he couldn’t.

That is why African’s problem defy solutions. That is why even our wars are most brutal. That is why the mind is so warped that nothing seems to be working. There is a nexus between this observation and the state of development of Africa as a whole. Can you imagine how the Hollywood has impacted on the American society and even societies outside America. What is more, these so-called Babalawos are dying of ordinary malaria fever in villages.
Christianity Etc › Re: Why Do Yoruba Movies Promote Babalawos? by porka: 6:42pm On May 18, 2010
I get your point poster. But, you probably do not know that you are up against a multi million naira, dollars if you like, industry that is sustained by fear, pseudo-religion, mass hysteria and ignorance. African people in general, refer to archaic, primitive and barbaric practices as culture because they want to sustain their economic base. Most of these guys in the Yoruba movie genre, I mean producers, directors and acts are not literate, the literates among them are directly from villages where these pre-medieval practices are strong. How can someone call killing of humans for so-called money ritual as culture if not villagers. That does not mean there are not some of them who are literate, but certainly not educated. How can someone leave civilization (city) to seek solution to his marital/finance/economic/health problems in the bush, with one old or young man who has never been to school, does not practice basic hygiene i.e. brush his teeth daily, probably has never seen electricity before?

You can rest assured that African mythology is very primitive, people are not encouraged to think through their problems or challenges except offered some stupid remedy which makes things worse for them. Imagine for a second, someone runs into a hard time, and all he could think of is one man, or woman maybe his wife or mother or neighbor, being responsible for his misfortune. Or a woman who apparently cannot conceive and all the advice she could get is going to drink some toxic substance in the name of culture. Is the baby going to be from outer space with 9 fingers, two heads, seven legs? In other words, are they having babies that are different from normal humans. It's just plain irrational.
Politics › Re: Tunde Bakare Blasts Obasanjo, Babangida by porka: 10:25pm On Mar 23, 2010
Tunde should stop personalizing issues. Let him stop blasting people up and down, he seems to think that the more he talked about personality the simpler the problem of Nigeria becomes.

If we use his argument about people’s antecedent against him, I think his own antecedent has not been very fantastic. While, we don’t know his professional performance, i.e. how well he preformed as a lawyer, cases he won and lost, we at least know him through his calling as a pastor/prophet. He predicted Obasanjo’s death in 1999, this is 2010, 11 years later, Obj is still alive. He denied it. He predicted someone from Adamawa taking over in 2007, we all know Yaradua is not from Adamawa, again he denied it. He predicted Yaradua as the messiah Nigeria has been waiting for, he has since “taken his dances and prayers back” on this. From these prophetic blunders, one can see that in his own calling, prophecy, he doesn’t deserved to be taken seriously. When you consistently deny your prophecy or claim someone misquoted you, something is wrong.

Similarly, Tunde told his congregation sometimes in 2007 that he is handing over the administration of his church to another person. He indeed said he was going abroad, I think USA, to learn POLITICS in their university, in order to come and teach our politicians “how to play politics”. He has not kept to his words.

My two kobo: Let Tunde concentrate on issues and stop calling people names. He does not have the monopoly on this, as he is not particularly angelic in his conducts. People should not compare him with Luther King or Archbishop Tutu, these guys are not in the league of Tunde at all. I watched Tutu on Amanpour very recently, when he was shown what Mugabe said about him, he didn’t show any sign of offense or acted like he wanted to blast him back. Luther King advocated a non-violent approach to civil right movement, we know he didn’t attack anyone verbally or otherwise, at least not openly. Calling people vultures, crocodiles and such beastly creatures is unbecoming of a pastor.

There are many ways to criticize without attacking people personally. Even non pastors/prophets should be temperate in their language/speech. I wish him the best.

So this can happen in my life time? Believe me, this a scenario that we have been testing for a while in a small think-tank/group. The possibility of Nigeria's enemies using our diversity to attack us. The scenario we tested was in war situation and not this "peace time" thing.

This is just a wake-up call. The authorities in the South and the North must come together to fashion a solution. This is vulnerability my people. What if an enemy has attacked us and cut-off the bridges in Lokoja, Onitsha, Markudi etc, to starve us to death? This is a NATIONAL SECURITY thing and it's more serious than some people here are taking it.

Who says "yahoo" (419) is exclusive to Nigerians? But, in an apparent bias against Nigeria and in continuation of the Nigerian bashing, they tagged the scam "Nigerian Letter". This is a very big shame to America. Bill Clinton is going to be in-law to a 419 expert afterall.

Politics › Re: Emperor Oshiomhole To "close" Nta For Allowing Criticism Of His Govt by porka(op): 7:42pm On Nov 18, 2009
@Bluetooth

Why Seun bans and moderates his forum is best known to him. However, it is not uncommon for media houses to have their own philosophy, what they accept and what they dont accept depending on their beliefs. For instance, a forum promoting religious values may not accept opinion unbecoming of the values thet seek to promote. I may decide to set up my own forum to accept adult content or to promote a certain political philosophy. If you have any contrary view to espouse that I feel I cant take, you are at liberty, while exercising your fundamental right to free speech, to set up your own forum and accept or promote your values.

Seun cannot under any circumstance come to your forum to disallow you from airing your view after having "banned" you from his forum. Similarly, freedom of speech is a right under democracy, no government has a right to dictate to me not to criticize or how to criticize it. The worst any government can do is take me to court for violation of whatever law. Nobody should be immuned from criticism not even Adams Oshiomhole who criticized government from 1999 - 2007 without any molestation. Or do you think the government of that time liked what he said? He is just an ordinary governor, compared to what he said to the president of this country for eight years, this is a child's play. Do you think he is allowing opposition air their opinion on Edo media outfits?

Politics › Re: Emperor Oshiomhole To "close" Nta For Allowing Criticism Of His Govt by porka(op): 6:47pm On Nov 18, 2009
You seem to be suggesting that ousting Gbenga Aruleba from AIT is justified therefore Emperor Oshiohmole's attempt at gagging the media is cool. Or that Daniel's attempt to "register" media houses is fine? Wrong!

Neither is good and none should be encouraged in a democracy. Democracy is anchored on freedom of speech among many other freedoms. You are not bothered as far as it is done to a PDP media. That's nonsense, Oshiomhole himself benefitted from "the one-sided" arrangment of NTA from 1999 to 2007 and nobody threatened anybody for giving him a fair hearing.

You dont seem to have read the complaint against NTA by this modern day demagogue. He said the program was a live-phone-in settting featuring an opposition. Live programs are meant for people to respond to, what stops him from seeking to present his side of the story and arrange a similar phone-in.

Are you saying the FG should use its "power" to clamp down on Edo radio or TV? Nigerians dont like free speech until we lose it.

The reality of free speech is that you dont have any choice in a democracy, this is not Iran, or China, or Obama's USA. The law court is there if you feel slandered or libeled by anybody, you can sue the daylight out of that person or institution. At least that will bring decorum to public debate. Nobody should be allowed to take away the right of the opposition to criticize the government of the day - not even when the incumbent is a beneficiary of such freedom in the past. IT WONT HAPPEN IN NIGERIA.

I like Nairaland, people gradually deviate from the main topic and start talking something else different. Can someone please tell me what Obama's presidency has got to do with this. Even those who did not have the ability to vote would sit on their ass looking for ways to discredit President Obama. Obviously people have said he was selected, some say he was chose, absolute rubbish, the rest of the discourse irrelevant. Everyone knew what happened, and that's why congress moved to act swiftly to prevent such occurrence.I have a question for people who talk without research; Was it Obama that introduced that bill to the house? Answer NO. Also, looking at this act, can someone please tell me where it says explicitly gives the right to shut down the internet, and don't worry rather than Goggling it, I have the link directly from the Library of Congress online. In addition, we carry news, but no one ever raised that Obama hasn't signed this bill, it was just introduced as a Reco, it hasn't even gone to either houses for vote which obviously, however Obama does have an cycbersecurity advisory panel.

Here is the link for Library of Congress and the name of the bill is Cyber security Act of 2009, No, S.773

http://www.senate.gov/pagelayout/legislative/g_three_sections_with_teasers/legislative_home.htm
Hello sir, I think there is more to worry about this bill than you are making us admit. Why would anyone think of introducing this kinda bill in the first place? Plus Obama's recent ego trip with Fox News is a serious concern for the lovers of free speech. Obama as you may know benefited tremendously through the internet in advancing his political career, so he knows what the power of internet can do. Now that the same medium is being used against him, it is only logical to infer that he wont turn down such powers if given by the congress.

I am sure you know that the internet is extremely regulated in China, North Korea and lately Iran, therefore it is not impossible as you are saying. The fact that you know where the bill is stored does not mean anything in this context. What is important at this hour is to continue to be vigilant. This guy, Obama, would charm the world with his "big government" ideology. Everything that endears America to the world is being erased one by one. Strong private enterprise is one of the strongest virture of Americans but it is being replaced by "big government" similar to inefficient African set-up. The FREEDOM OF SPEECH is another which is already under threat with the Fox News saga. See why we should worry?
Politics › Re: Obama Admits He Is A Muslim by porka: 3:03am On Nov 18, 2009
@ Poster

Many Nigerians support Obama for the color of his skin, not because of what he stands for or what he does, so you are up against some deep-seated sentiments. To them he does no wrong and cannot be criticized. Jim Clansy of CNN made a derogatory remark about us in the THE SUNDAY SUN some weeks back, "I can see that many Nigerians see Obama as the best thing that has ever happened after Jesus Christ". That's how rabid their support for the guy is.

Again, religion is a divisive issue in this country, I am sure you know that Nigeria has a large muslim population, so you are likely to be shut down because of that.

As for his religion, he claimed to be a christian, at least that much we knew during the Jeremiah Wright debate, even though he has not attended church services more than a couple of times since Jan 20 that he took office.

Obama needs more prayer now than ever. I personally feel he is blocking the chances of black people getting elected into any meaningful position in America because of his bad policies of "changing" America.

Hello guys. I doubt the accuracy of this report. My reasons are simple;

1. Nigerian media lack the capacity to correctly report economic or financial news. Remember the infamous 'Soludo said the global meltdown will not affect Nigeria'? What Soludo actually said was "Nigerian banks are not exposed to the SUBPRIME Housing Instruments" And it was true.

2. The report did not quote Sanusi as saying what the headlines says. Read it again.

3. Sanusi does not use Nigeria media for any serious pronouncement such as this. He uses the FT, BBC and such serious and believable media.

After all said and qouted, is Pat Utomi an economist

"Utomi had his first degree in mass communications at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN. He also holds MA, MPA, and Ph.D in political economy."

Does the above quote make Utomi an Economist?

So someone with a first degree in History, MA and PhD in History of Economics is an Economist too? See why Nigeria's economy is teethering? Nigeria is probably the only country with the number of "economists" higher than it's GDP figure.

I can go ahead and get a PhD in Yoruba and claim to be an economist because people listen to me? This is getting out of hand. Why cant I just be satisfied with claim to my Yoruba mastery and leave economics to PROPER economists? What does it take from Utomi if he is refered to as a Journalist that he is?

Nigerians should learn to do things properly please. A BSc is just a piece of paper? A PhD involves a lot of research, true, but Wole Soyinka did not have any PhD o, yet he is renowned in his field not a "wannabe".
