My red colored civic ... I bought it tokunbo with 90k miles at the time ... The first 6months I never had any issues, all I did was oil change .........The most I spend on repairs can't be up to 60k naira .........

When it comes to auto parts the most important thing is getting quality parts . once you are able to get good quality parts , than your repairs and downtime will reduce ....

I have replace the same parts over and over again .. I wasted money . And this is due to low quality parts and incompetent mechanics.......

Can you believe with the civic I have never change the a/c compressor before .. And this is because I used the imported freon .........

if owners can go the extra mile to take care of their cars by buying quality parts. It will save them time and money in the long run

Car Talk › Re: From Gazzuzz To Radautoworks And Back Again…my Story. by radautoworks:
So many, many lies in this thread and the other. If op had spent the time communicating with us like he did with his "guru", maybe he would have already heard everything that was repackaged and regurgitated to him.

Anyone who's watches all the videos and reviews the invoicing as well as original diagnosis will see that except for the catalytic converter code (which was non-existent when the car first came to our shop) EVERYTHING in the savior thread was mentioned.

WE FIXED EVERYTHING THE OP PROVIDED PARTS FOR AND AT A TOTAL COST OF 200K. The same "abused oil pressure switch" in the link was provided by the OP and his hero lipsrsealed.

1) TPMS sensor identified first visit and video- NOT PROVIDED BY OP

2) airbag light also identified at first visit- PUT ON THE BACK BURNER TO FIX 5 (five) DIFFERENT UNDERCARRIAGE LEAKS

3) oxygen sensor identified at first and second visit - NOT PROVIDED BY OP

4) "I will be draining the Engine engine oil to inspect for metal shredding or particles, then replacing all seals relating to the VTEC system."- solenoid leak patched was patched at first visit because SEAL UNAVAILABLE AT THE TIME. NOT PROVIDED BY OP

5) "Had some time to take out the vtec oil pressure solenoid and pressure switch.(looking horrible)"- SWITCH PROVIDED BY OP

6) catalytic converter code Attempted spacer fix is a bypass patch, not a fix . we don't do that.

7) "I'll rather just work with new (Toks) parts free from previous abuse. Will try and get new harnesses for the parts ."- parts provided by op and guru undecided

8 )"Further inspections reveals a disintegration of the catalytic converter. It's a good thing we caught it this early , would have been fatal to the engine"- a clogged catalytic converter will reduce power to an engine but will not destroy an engine

9) "The O2 sensors have been literarily glued to the manifolds and would not unscrew without a little persuasion."- we did not touch those, again because op had bigger problems and did not provide the part

10)"Oil drained, no metal particles found."- as we stated repeatedly and were mocked, OP DOES NOT NEED AN ENGINE REPLACEMENT

11) "I am wondering why no one recommended coolant in this vehicle? Was it your inability to afford it or just forgetfulness."- engine work WAS DONE on this vehicle and coolant WAS put in

12) Faulty 'A' Rocker Arm Actuator - mentioned in all diagnoses but put on back burner for other problem.

13) EDIT: THE MOST OUTRAGEOUS LIE OF ALL:" I always wondered why previous technician was unable to solve the oil pressure light issue, well there you have it, oil was unable to build up pressure because the valve which is suppose to control the vtec lifters was not there at all" - that entire assembly was changed with part provided by customer AND a test unit from another car so unless all three were "missing the vtec lifters", some tall tales going on here. The more likely scenario is an upgraded ECU with the update was procured and some other excuse fabricated as a "novel" fix. Which is more likely? Three assemblies all missing a lifter including one of our test units which worked just fine in another vehicle) or the alternate scenario? Given previous history below... Inside things lol

Op is gleeful to be getting what he wanted from when he first wanted to double-stack coupons- FREE REPAIRS.

I have a simple question for the happy hero. If this car had come to him first, what would have been the bill to fix everything we did plus what he is fixing now? Because when we gave op a bill that would have made us responsible for everything it was called outrageous.

We did a LOT of work on that car (a lot of it free which I now regret) and were clear that there were still items left to be done. Any mechanic can always find something additional to fix particularly on a car with as many problems as this one had. The goal was to make the car road worthy by tackling it's larger problems, which we did as op drove over 300 miles to the East (after a week of driving around town). My other question is why op didn't take the car to the "guru" he name-checked in the title and at the beginning of the thread AND bought parts from during the duration of the repairs? Cleaning up leftover repairs is easy when someone else has already done the heavy lifting that's why. Inside things.

Postscript to the plagiarizing "guru":
You wanted publicity off our name and have been on a campaign to try to hurt us for years. Each attempt more desperate than the last lol.

Even went as far as lying about an ac compressor and when you were busted the thread was cleaned of everything that showed you for what you are. You claimed we lied to you about it being new and you weren't refunded. Instead, you knowingly purchased a remanufactured one AND received a full refund which you used to buy additional goods. (https://www.nairaland.com/5429767/where-rad-auto-works-parts/2#82450620 pages 6,7 and 8 now scrubbed clean) was swept under the rug but a couple of screenshots remain below. I actually have ALL the screenshots of everything that has ever been scrubbed but it is not worth my time.

Falsified car mileage, also scrubbed clean https://www.nairaland.com/5420678/2010-corolla-foreign-used-54000/11#82379760 then replaced with https://www.nairaland.com/5421108/2010-corolla-foreign-used-54000#82510255
It took months for that memory to die and you to skulk out of the shadows. https://www.nairaland.com/5420678/#82297967

Oh, you're still upset that we offered to fix baba40's car for free when you basically told him to go screw himself? Seen.

For two years you have been unable to get us to interact with you since we discovered the low levels you are willing to stoop to. You believe all publicity is good publicity however we disagree. It's cute that you think we are in competition but guy man, we are not. You fix four car brands and pick and choose your repairs. It doesn't matter what you do, our customer base knows what we can do and will continue to grow. Until you grow out of this childish insecurity that requires you to register multiple monikers to say nasty things you can't with your main moniker, and use them to attack anyone you perceive as a threat, you will remain as you are.

"But why are their parts so expensive if as they claim they have no middle man and are direct with manufacturers? Afterall they are a Carquest undecided"

Ladies and gentlemen, the answer is simple-NIGERIA. No matter how honest you try to be the system encourages illegal behavior.

Case in point an issue I am actively wrestling as we speak that has been progressively getting worse over the past year.

When you import parts worth $1,800 (complete with manufacturer invoices attached to the pallet), pay shipping of $1,700 and customs decides that they know better than the manufacturer and says the goods cost $8,000 then hands you a duty bill of N1.6m ($3,333), what price can you then sell to your customer for? We fight it and usually get it down somebut that usually delays deliveries by 3-4 weeks undecided

Could we do like others and smuggle? Yes, we could but why would we put such a large investment at risk? We believe in transparency and doing things the right way but when a system takes advantage of that, what is your recourse? Despite that, we have never passed on the cost to the customer and simply relied on a low margin-high volume model.

So the next time you feel that Carquest prices are high, don't blame us, blame the system. I'm all ears if anyone has A LEGAL way to bring prices lower for our customers.

"I would like to visit Rad Auto Works/Milex/Carquest but I'm afraid of the price!"

I see this sentiment a lot on NL but is it really expensive? Well, in a nutshell, you get what you pay for. This has been discussed in bits and pieces across NL so let's look at how business is conducted at Rad Auto Works:

Step 1
Bring car for free diagnosis with repair(if repair is not desired, skip to step 7)

Step 2
Get detailed repair estimate and recommendations

STEP 3
SIGN AND ACCEPT estimate to approve repair OR DON'T SIGN AND REJECT ESTIMATE (SKIP TO STEP 6)

STEP 4
BRING YOUR OWN PARTS (different labor rate), OR use our parts with up to two year warranty

step 5
Car is repaired

Step 6
Pay and pick up car, have warranty explained

Step 7
Pay for diagnosis and leave (N5,000-in most cases)

Step 8
Come in for free 14 day follow up if required. If not, enjoy not having to worry for two years.

The picture below is a sample of an "expensive" job on a limited 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe that includes, ac compressor, tie rods and oil change. note that what drives up the price is the cost of the imported AC compressor with a 2 year warranty. A cost we can do nothing about due to the nigerian economic climate.

Note the labor was only 30k for the whole thing. This is how detailed our billing is so you know exactly what we are charging.

The second picture is the book hours for some common work on a 2012 Camry.

That being said, for a comparable shop in Lagos, we are cheap.

FAQs
obekediamondfuto:
I have a question.

how do we quantify/ measure the actual Vs ideal hours a mechanic should spend on a particular project?

I speak this for the benefit of everyone in naija before other mechanics start seeing this kain thing and start billing us per hour...

then u go see mechanic that will spend 20 hours for engine removal then 8 days rebuilding and 2 weeks to install.... by the time the project is finished, money spent on man hour labour would have purchased two of that kinda vehicle. excuses like.... "oga, the vehicle strong oh we no fit loose am" or the likes will surface

please is there any corporate entity that can verify,/ audit these labour hours or its not necessary.....

for now I know aunty radu them are trying to change things so they would not even dare doctor hours.
radautoworks:
Easy. There are specified hours in Auto shop software that dictate how long every single job on a car should take. Every dealer has it even if they choose to ignore it. It is referred to as the "book". If the "book" says 20 hours and you take 40 hours, you can only collect 20 hours.

Conversely, if the "book" says 20 hours and you are really good and take 16, you still get paid 20 hours. That's why our shops do so well. We consistently over-perform the "book".

The book is how mechanics get paid in the usa so if they work 40 hours but only book 30, they get paid for 30. Someone like my husband consistently booked 90 hours a week working 40 when he was with other companies. No mechanic worth his salt EVER agrees to salary in the USA. If they do, RUN.

The book bases time on a "good " or "b" technician not even an "a" so there is no reason why techs should be going over the allotted time consistently. If a tech can't beat book time without making mistakes, they can't work for us.

The most popular book is Alldata, followed by Mitchell. There are others of course but the are all pretty much the same as far as labor hours.

Egunmogaji, AutoElectNG and some others can confirm this.
Mr. FUTO probably missed class when I held a lecture on "book".

A) The book will specify how long repair should take a mechanic. This is not only useful for the consumer but massively useful for insurance companies.

Any shop/mechanic that doesn't complete work before the book hours should be flogged with a timing belt.

B) Most small shops forgo the book thing, and especially those that specialize on a certain brand or certain automotive aspect.

So for me I won't be doing book in Nigeria (I think so far), it will be project based. For example, 4 wheel brake job, including changing all rotors/drums, pads/shoe and related hardware should be a relative easy task that can be advertised for a given amount of money. So you might see something like "N35,000 brake job".

The industry in Nigeria needs to develop a book for repairs as we're in uncharted territories. I've seen some scary engine bays.

We also desperately need a blue book value.
obekediamondfuto:
...

aunty radu, abeg soft copy dey? does the book cover for unforseen circumstances.....like exhaust welded to the engine direct
radautoworks:
While it's called a book, it's actually software or online. You can buy a subscription of it's worth it to you from any of them but the subscriptions usually run anywhere from $100-200 a month. As a Carquest, it's inbuilt into our system so we don't subscribe.

In an extreme case like direct weld, maybe one or two hours extras might be permitted but we have never asked for it.

With a scanner, go to "data" and scroll till you see o2 sensor bank 1 or 2 whichever one it is, and see if the number is changing. If not, no signal is being received.

Good Morning Boss,

Thanks for the other time.

Update:
So i checked for air leaks as advised and i didn't see any though my check might not have been exhaustive. But i discovered that the air filter was not fixed properly and a hose to the engine has the clip on the on the body of the rubber instead of the mouth. So those two were corrected and i cleared the error code. It didn't come up for 3 weeks.

However, it (P0101) came up again on Easter Monday (last week), i cleared it, drove the car for a week. Then the check engine light was up again last night. Same error code P0101.

I also noticed the engine hesitates a little when i try to accelerate or when i want to start it.

Kindly assist.
