Okay, let me just quietly throw this pigeon among the cats. ![]() Mr Jones in his book about the Eastern Delta Ijos was talking about how some Ijo men who traded with the British in the old days literally translated their native Ijo names into English to give names like Big Fowl and Strong Face, and it got me thinking again about how some of these Eastern Ijo English names translate literally into names that are still very popular in the southern periphery of Igboland. I used to wonder how on earth names like Goodcountry/Finecountry, Fineboy and Goodhead made sense to anyone, until it hit me that their Igbo equivalents, Alaoma, Nwokoma (Wokoma) and Isioma/Ishioma are still very popular names among the Southern Igbo who were in direct contact with the Eastern Ijo. Perhaps these three English Ijo names arose because Kalabari and Ibani traders with Igbo names 'anglicised' them under British-trader influence. One of these three names, Wokoma, is still used by the Kalabari in its (original?) Igbo form. Thoughts ChinenyeN, bigfrancis21, probz? ![]() Okay bye. |
skolobo:So how did the men mentioned in Jeremiah 41:5 shave their beards? They used hair removal cream? |
Tessyy1701:They do not take home up to 100K in UNN oh! |
This is dumb. |
whizcartel:In the Southeast, you will still meet guys called Onyinye. I had two as close friends in sec school. One was from Enugu and the other from Anambra. So, you're right; it is unisex, though girls tend to bear it more. |

Now it just looks ridiculous. |
LOL! Yet again?! |
The blundering was so bad that I thought it couldn't possibly be real, that it must be doctored. But it is instructive that the 'undoctored' footage has not surfaced to prove that the one every Nigerian has seen is a piece of mischief. I am now leaning in the direction of: REAL, NOT DOCTORED. |
I am a little amused at the level of attention the Dein's comments have been getting online. Why is everyone acting surprised over it? Like, y'all didn't know that Agbor is one of the Anioma towns with the strongest non-Igbo-identifying stance? Even when he appeared to insinuate that Agbor is not Ika, that too shouldn't surprise anyone who knows how Agbor people can sometimes take this superior stand-alone, I-am-unique-from-everyone posture. |
This is the saddest thing I have seen in a very long time. This is Nigeria in a nutshell, ladies and gentlemen. |
I have noticed Ogoni people have a lot of nw- names that make them sound Igbo to some people: Nwilo, Nwidobie. Even Ken Saro Wiwa was Ken Saro Nwiwa before he dropped the 'N' because people thought it was an Igbo name. What does that nw- in Ogoni names mean? Lebari is a beautiful name, btw. Ogoni names are generally beautiful. |
I've seen people who have different surnames from their siblings. Not very common, but it happens. |
I think it will be anachronistic to say the skeleton found at Iwo Eleru belonged to a Yoruba man. For one, archaeologists have discovered that the skeleton belonged to a primitive forerunner of modern humans. It's like saying the remains of the Cro-Magnon man found in France belonged to a Frenchman. |
What is happening here? Akokoid languages are neither Yoruboid nor Edoid. They are an independent branch of the Kwa language family. |
Wisdomval67:The monikers of one guy whose knowledge of deep Yoruba words is probably unmatched on this forum. I haven't seen him here in a long time, but if he gets these mentions he might be able to help. |
Ladionline 2prexios absolutesuccess |
edupedia:You don't seem very okay, so I am just going to look the other way. |
YourNemesis:You have a point about this being largely a SW thing. Most of the people I have met who try to categorise everybody into one of the Big Three had a SW background. There was this friend I knew from uni. He was Igbo, but was born and raised in Ogun State. We were discussing Nigerian musicians and he said Tuface was Igbo. I said Nooo, he is Idoma. The guy said, Ehen? If he is not Igbo, is he now Yoruba? I started talking about how everybody is not either Yoruba or Igbo, and the guy just gave me the middle finger...literally. ![]() |
When I meet Nigerians who don't know there are more than 3 ethnic groups in Nigeria, I am like "Where the hell did you people go to school?!" The primary school I went to was so bush we held classes under a gmelina tree (my school uniforms and books all had gmelina juice stains and smell like gmelina). Yet we were all taught about the other ethnic groups that make up Nigeria. Efik, Bini, Ijaw, Kanuri, Fulani, Ibibio, etc. We knew about them before we entered JS1. ![]() |
One of the artefacts was labelled "Benin Bronze Ife Bust" ![]() LOL,WTH does that even mean? That's like labelling a sculpture as "Roman Stone Greek sculpture". |
LOL. So much poor understanding of anthropology on one thread. You people think the bigger cranial capacity of the Neanderthals necessarily equalled a better, more efficient brain than that possessed by Homo sapiens? LOL. Scientists suspect that Neanderthals didn't even have the full range of vocal ability (i.e., full speech) that Homo sapiens have. Their technology and social organisation was definitely inferior to that of the incoming Homo sapiens. Which is why they eventually lost out to the Homo sapiens. So much for their "big brains". Big brain in the Neanderthal case didn't mean Better brain. Neanderthals were quite bulky heavy set people. Proportionately one would expect their skulls to be big too. FYI, the sperm whale's brain is like six times bigger than your brain. I don't see anyone saying sperm whales are smarter than people. |
Hati13:Disgusted. I thought you were one of the more sensible people on this forum. |
I am more interested in his grandiosely delusionary designation. "Imperial Majesty"? "Lord Mayor of the Igbo Nation and in Diaspora"? Someone is suffering from the Idi Amin Complex. ![]() |
This is not possible. Adeyinka Grandson told me that it is Igbo people that are committing all the crimes in Lagos. |
So is she saying if she is paid good money to do a Joy soap advert, she will not do it because she doesn't use Joy soap? It's just a f--king advert, and he is an actor just getting paid to do a f--king job! ![]() |
As someone with a love for linguistics, Kperogi is always a delight to read. |
That picture with the tag "Uthman Dan Fodio" on it is actually from Ethiopia. |
delugajackson:53 people liked this dumb shit and 5 people shared it? |
Cool that he is there for his kids and trying to make something out of his life. Shouldn't be making babies at that age though. Shouldn't. |
They have somewhat Mongoloid eyes and facial structure. At least the ones I can see their faces clearly in these pictures. I wonder if it is due to an independent adaptation on the part of the Negritos or it has something to do with genetic contribution from the Mongoloid race. |
