EventsRe: LCCI Stakeholders Forum On The Effects Of Border Closure On The Economy. by Redman44(op): 11:37am On Feb 17, 2020
The Nigerian land borders are still closed and the Federal Government does not intend to open them for some time. People in Nigeria have different opinions and thoughts about the border closure. Some Farmers and Poultry owners have expressed satisfaction with the FG on the Border closure, because they are making more money from selling frozen chicken, frozen turkey and other farm products. Imported Chicken and Meat Products are now being restricted from coming into Nigeria by the Nigeria Customs Service ( NCS ). We are not quite sure if Local businesses and Companies are benefiting positively from the Border closure. Some Manufacturers in Nigeria are not very happy with the situation on ground. Ships containing raw materials. machinery, engines etc that are used by manufacturers to produce their products are stuck at the Apapa and Tin Can Island Ports in Lagos, without being able to berth. The congestion at the Lagos Ports is taking a toll on the economy.

This is why you need to attend this event. Why did the Federal Government and the Nigerian Customs Service ( NCS ) not have a dialogue with the Stakeholders of the economy before closing the borders? What is the current state of the other ports scattered all over the nation? And why were the Lagos Ports made the entry point of 95% of imported goods and items into the country? What measures can be taken to avert problems associated with congestion at the Ports in the future?

Please attend this event. cool cool cool cool cool cool cool.

BusinessRe: Nigeria/Nigerians should be big in the chocolate business by Redman44(m): 8:42pm On Feb 14, 2020
It is a very good idea. It is not only Cocoa and Chocolates alone, but so many other products. One thing I have observed is that intelligence and knowledge is not often appreciated in Nigeria. People will regard you as a very arrogant person if you display signs of knowing a lot of things. Intelligence and Creativity is not encouraged in our children and in our schools. I know Chocolate venture in Nigeria though. The lady is on twitter. She makes Chocolates in her small factory and the Chocolates are enclosed in lovely packaging. But they are very expensive. We need more chocolate makers in Nigeria. Africa and Nigeria is really blessed with so many food crops and grains that can be converted into snacks etc. It is very hard to get affordable meat pies and sausages that are well produced in the country. So many opportunities to explore smiley smiley smiley smiley.

Okay let's even play along, let's assume we divide.

Yorubas: Who will be president? Tinubu, Saraki, Fashola, Akeredolu?

SE/SS: Amaechi, Jonathan, Kanu, Obi?

Are we not seeing a pattern here? The same corrupt element would still govern us, the same problems would still manifest, they might come in a different shape or form but they would still exist. Look at states like Lagos, Imo, Cros Riv and so on with enough resources to stand alone, how come people in these states are still suffering?
You have spoken well. State Governors can help in lifting Nigeria into the comity of industrialized nations. This is because there is no one shackling our State Governors from developing their States. When we focus too much on who occupies Aso Rock, we won't be able to see the potentials in the States we live in. Look at Zulum in Borno State. He is building modern classroom blocks all over the State gradually. And Borno State is not even as rich as Ondo, Oyo or Rivers State. States have resources that can be exploited for the development of infrastructure and facilities. The President is not stopping Governors from developing their States. The President does not have control over the resources located in the 36 States of Nigeria. State Governors can invite expatriates and foreign investors to help grow their States economically. So why are we so concerned about who occupies Aso Rock. What are we doing about corrupt Governors?

All these battles to occupy Aso Rock are meaningless sad sad sad sad.

1. Will a Northern President stop a Southern State Governor from developing his State? NO.
2. We had Fayose in Ekiti State. How many things did he do to develop Ekiti State? Did he build Industries in the State'?
3. We had GEJ in Power for 5 years. Did Nigeria become a paradise during GEJ's tenure as the country's President?
4. Many Eastern State Governors have performed below expectations during the OBJ and GEJ years. Am I lying?
5. Lucky Igbinedion. What did he do for Edo State?

And so on and so forth. Hmn.

OROSUNBOLB:
Even in nonsense there is sense ! Fani Kayode may be an unstable character, but any intelligent or reasonable person will agree with him that the very foundation of this country is shacking seriously and may collapse any time soon.

Buhari seems to be so much interested in pursuing Uthman Dan fodio's hegemonic agenda that will definitely see to the end of Nigeria. The country is divided sharply along ethnic ,regional and religious line in such a degree that has never been this pronounced in her history.

What is Buhari thinking of ? To subject the rest of the country to the authority of his ethnic fulani thereby securing Nigeria for them as their inheritance as wished by Uthman Dan Fodio ? What is the real motive behind Ruga ? 2023 is pregnant with a lot of possibilities that are capable of tearing the country apart and destabilize the whole of west Africa.. Nigeria will never be an inheritance of Fulanis. That idea is dead on arrival,it will never see the light of the day.

This is not 1967, I hope this administration will use the remaining parts of their tenure to quickly right some of the obvious wrongs before the situation gets out of hand. Buhari should not provoke ethnic conflict that can easily result in the collapse of Nigeria. He is too nepotistic to be President of Nigeria and I fear he is steering the ship of the country toward another civil war. He must be stopped ! This time around, any region can easily secede from Nigeria in case of another war.

Yorubas don't beat drum of war and we don't flex unnecessary muscle but nobody should doubt it, our land ,every inch of it, will be well defended and secured in case somebody decides to be stupid. Oodua won't be caught unaware !

Yes ,Nigeria can break up with the way Mr Buhari is running and conducting her affairs now. I so agree with Fani Kayode.

I am not disregarding the views of Femi Fani Kayode. I respect him as a person. However, I feel we should not allow ourselves to be used by Politicians to achieve their objectives. Because a Northern organization says Nigeria belongs to the Fulani people, does not mean all Northerners agree with the tribalistic organization. State Governors have been given more power nowadays and they are now able to develop their States as they deem fit. There is no General in Aso Rock controlling everyone in the country these days. I don't like the APC as a Party but under APC rule, we can see some positive moves. We can see infrastructural development to some extent and Social Welfare is being introduced gradually into the country. We also had some good initiatives and programs under the PDP governments. Gradually, Nigeria is developing. It is still at a snail pace, but Nigeria is moving towards its destiny. The battle for Aso Rock should not hinder the growth of the 36 States of the Federation. Governors should be held responsible for the development of their States. The President in Aso Rock will not come and develop your State for you. He can only release your State's monthly allocation to your Governor. So what we should work towards is Regionalism. We need to make Aso Rock less attractive to our Politicians.

Did you say "20 years of democracy"? So what will you call the years 1960 - 1966 & 1979 - 1983? Which region had the presidency those years? Now aggregately from 1960 - 2019 which region has held power more? Why do you people rub off those times in the history of Nigeria? The north my friend has held power much more. And you know what, they need to let others enjoy it too.
You are not getting my point. The Prime Minister between 1960-1966 was Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. Under Balewa, Nigeria thrived. Am I lying? Yes, the Military rulers after Balewa were mostly Northerners and under Military Rule, Governors did not often have a mind of their own. Since 1999, we have had many Southern Governors who looted their States dry smiley smiley smiley smiley. What I am saying is that under this democratic dispensation, we should start focusing on what individual State Governors can achieve concerning the development of their States. The States are receiving their allocations monthly from Abuja. What are they doing with these monies and the Internally Generated Revenue from their States? Governors also have some control over the Mineral and Natural Resources located in their States. We should focus more on the activities of Governors. This battle to occupy Aso Rock is contributing to the slow economic growth of Nigeria.

I may not agree with Femi most times but the reality on ground seems to align with his thoughts. The Northern elites wants to hold on to power by all means in 2023 and the South feels shortchanged, rightly so. Nigeria na forced contraption!
But the South has held power for 13 out of the 20 years of democracy we've had so far. That is the statistic the North is looking at. GEJ (5 YEARS ). OBJ ( 8 YEARS ). I think we should be looking at Regionalism with respect to the Centre at Abuja. At the moment, Governors have the power to do a lot of things about the development of their States. Are the Northerners stopping Southern Governors from developing their States? Will Tinubu or any other Southerner becoming President in 2023 lead to the development of Southern Nigeria? I don't understand why we focus too much attention on the Presidency and less attention on State Governors and Local Government Chairmen.

you get your info mostly from media so you're brainwashed. a lot of white people are doing worse than black Americans but the white owned media would never show it.

right now you're trying your best to express yourself as been better than black Americans when there are millions of black americans that are better than you.
@ Tayeni, you only need to attend the Lagos International Trade Fair to see some amazing products manufactured by Nigerians. Nigerians are now making Pencils, detergents, machines for food processing, hand held tools etc. The problem is that the World Trade Organization and the Western nations impose a lot of tariffs on our products when we export them. The trade rules we have to abide with are not helpful to the export of our goods and products.

are they as diverse as we are?

does japan or china have over 250 languages within its boundaries? if we all encourage our local languages over english then how should the country be governed?

if buhari today can only speak fulani fluently and osibanjo only yoruba how are they going to communicate with each other and moreover the over 250 other ethnic groups?

and should the government make provisions for maths, biology, chemistry to be translated into the over 250 ethnic groups individually? the problem of choosing to teach in our local language will bring far more problem and disunity than the common english.
Most Nigerians understand the three main languages- Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa. Well, the damage has been done from the foundation of Nigeria. However, we can create our destiny towards a better future. Rwanda is actively promoting local languages as the languages of teaching in Rwandan secondary schools.

Many Nigerians are willing to learn Chinese when they want to go and study in China, or learn German when they want to travel to Germany for business or pleasure. However when a Chinese man or woman comes here, we speak English to them and kowtow to them. If the Nigerian Government is serious about serious development for the nation, the teaching of our local languages and culture should be massively promoted in our Primary and Secondary schools.

If you want to ‘save the Igbo language’, make it a compulsory subject and teach it rigorously in school. Same as how we do for English.

Forcing non-Igbos to wear Igbo attire and speak Igbo language...that’s nonsense.
If you are not Igbo, but you school in the East, you should not be forced to wear Igbo attire. However, schooling in a Igbo State should be seen as an opportunity to learn the Igbo Language. My mum is Yoruba. She grew up in Calabar. She speaks Igbo, Yoruba and Calabar dialects including Efik.

No!...Japanese and Chinese because of pride speak their own language...you don't see Japanese prime minister speak English in the UN meeting even if he can. See! igbo is dying. I see many Igbo youths that can't speak igbo, forming phonetics. Unlike Hausa and Yoruba that is taught from childhood. Many igbo parents sometimes willingly refuse teaching Igbo to their kids because they want them to appear more western or civilized which is very wrong. See many igbo brought ups in Lagos, Kaduna, kano etc can't speak igbo. In the North even in official setting they joyfully speak their hausa but in the east it is not the case. I don't know why many igbos sometimes pretend they can't speak igbo and this is rampant among young youths and those slay Queens...The language will slowly die with this mentality erasing our culture. We should encourage igbo to be spoken and no one should be shy to speak it. We igbos always try to appear more western which in the long run will affect our heritage.
Well said and spoken. God bless you.

Same thing can happen in Nigeria with 3 major languages being promoted as the national language- Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo. With government support and mutual understanding, this policy will work. If you train our students with native language, how do you think we can cope with international debate or expressing ourselves in an interview or relating with investors in nigeria. While Korea and rest of the country u mentioned are like that is because their government did a lot for them, empowering everybody with the skills and intellectuality without going to foreign land. I bet Nigeria can't do that. Even our politicians send their kids to foreign land. There's no empowerment. And that's why we need to empower ourselves by learning the foreign language. That's our last option
We are not going to develop properly as a Nation until we adopt our languages as the language of teaching. The Japanese have English as a 2nd language mainly for trade purposes. Japan won't be where it is today if the Japanese adopted English as their first language. Same for South Korea and China. We can create and develop curricula in our native languages if we are determined to do so. Language is a powerful tool of development.

Many Igbo people have their dialects of the Igbo language, but the average Igbo person understands the commonly spoken Igbo language. Yorubas understand one another, though the Yoruba Language has several dialects. China has many tribes too, and they speak about 5-6 languages in that country. Children these days don't really know how to express themselves in English because of native lang upbringing. Our mother's tongue is necessary too but we need to be advanced in English first than any other language.
Yes, Igbo Language should be spoken on the same day traditional clothing is worn to school. However, I don't agree that English Language should be given more prominence than our local languages. The Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Germans do not speak English as their first language and they also do not teach with English language in their schools. English Language is a 2nd language in China, Japan, South and North Korea and Germany. And these nations are far ahead of Nigeria in so many things. I believe we will produce more intelligent people in our schools if we teach students with Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa. Cheers.

Very good move. I'm loving this. This policy should be adopted by all the States in Nigeria. A day in the week should be chosen for Primary and Secondary school students in Nigeria to dress in traditional clothing to attend classes. This would keep tailors and fashion designers working to produce different styles of native clothes all year round. It would also boost Nigeria's fashion industry. The Anambra State government has made a good move with this directive. All other states should adopt it. Nice One smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley.

Europeans, Westerners all live on credit.
Their bank account is 0.00. They use credit card for everything. Food, Clothes, Car, Phone contract, mortgage.
And then they spend their lives, working and paying back the credit, month after month.
In that type of life, one can barely save anything. That's why they pay monthly rent. They can never save money like us to pay yearly.
We Nigerians do not have credit system.
Nobody here will give you Food, Clothes, Car, Phone contract, mortgage on credit.
Go and earn your complete money first, before buying anything.
So somehow, we are better at saving money.
We can save to pay annual rent.
But believe me, if you allow your life to go down the path of credit-credit-credit.... you can never gain it back.
Majority of British students take out a student loan to even go to university. And this money is deducted from their salary if and when they get jobs
after graduation.
Many get seriously depressed becuase of this. If they don't pay, it is recorded as a bad credit rating and they can not take more credit for any other thing.
Some just gather small money, enter aeroplane and run to Australia (a country made or formerly British citizens) and start a new life there, never to return to UK.
@uuzba, you are absolutely correct. Spot on smiley smiley smiley smiley. When Nigerians demand money anyhow from their relatives abroad, I just shake my head. The person that can send you £50 or $50 has tried for you because nobody will dash him that amount of money in Europe or America. Yet, you see Nigerians complaining about their friends, siblings, relatives and cousins in Europe being stingy. You that just ate Semovita, vegetable soup and meat as your dinner sad sad sad, will now pick up your phone and ask for £100 from someone in the UK who is buying chicken and chips from a fast food joint on his street as his dinner- This person is also thinking of how to pay his rent for that Month though he has a full time job. Some of you need to come and work in Europe and America so that you can understand the 'Billing Lifestyle and System'. May God grant you the visa you are praying for. Amen. I am not saying Nigerians are not making it in Europe and America, don't get it twisted. What I am saying is that you should not always think the Grass is Greener on the other side of the Fence. Very true. Many Nigerians don't understand the systems in the western world. Due to Rents, Mortgages, Bills, Council Tax etc, there is not much left of people's Salaries and Wages. That is why people hold on to their jobs with all their might because of the monthly payments they have to make. This is why Africans in Europe and America, Canada, Australia etc need to create multiple sources of income. Nigerians need to come and work in Europe for a year to know what people are going through, so that they will stop demanding for money anyhow. I can so relate to this. Way back in 2005 I started a food packaging business. I promised all my employees that they would always receive 13th month salary. They also went home every month with products that the packaging had been damaged or returned by customers.
Between 2005 - 2008 they received tje 13th month. I thought they were loyal, not knowing they had become a cartel to milk me dry. In 2008 I had to take a loan to finance the business still. Not know they were stealing. They got so comfortable stealing that people later said they were using "juju" on me. A lot of other people saw them stealing and ruining my business but you know Nigerians, nobody said anything. By 2009 I couldn't repay the loan so I lost my collateral. By the end of 2009, when I couldn't pay the 13th month, every single one of them left.

I used all my gratuity from working with an oil company to set up this business. They just came to ruin me and left.

On the flip side, I have a friend that wouldn't pay her staff for months, her children school abroad. Yet her staff stay for years, they dare not steal from her.

Honestly, Nigerians are the cause of their own woes. Businesses pack up daily because Nigerians care so little about each other.

They don't seem to realise it affects every part of their lives, their children's lives and future.
We are tearing this country apart through nonchalance and greed.

I don't know a more disloyal citizenry than Nigerians. It is all quite unfortunate because together we could make a phenomenal nation.
Hmn. Very deep testimony from you. Dishonesty and Greed is very rampant among Employers and Employees in Nigeria. You employ someone and that person wants to buy a Jeep through your business at the end of the year. You can be a good and generous employer but very calculative and firm at the same time. You need to commit your business into the hands of God and scrutinize daily operations carefully. Don't waste time in sacking any dubious, lazy or unproductive worker. Do spot checks with your customers to actually know how your employees act when they go out to supply goods to them. Don't be careless and too trusting. At the end of the day, it is your Company and you are responsible to make it succeed. Cheers.

The whole picture of immigration into and life in Europe and North America was not given to Africans by the western media and our people who live in the white man's lands. On the other hand, the whole picture of life and living standards in African nations was not given to Europeans and Americans, Canadians, Australians etc by the same Western Media. Africans themselves do not know much about their countries apart from the States and Regions they live in or their States of Origin. Many Nigerians have not lived in or visited more than 3 Nigerian States in their lifetime. Everyone is at fault here. Africans prefer to go on holiday to Dubai or Florida when we have exotic countries like Cape Verde and Seychelles in Africa. Kenya and Tanzania also have good tourism spots. The truth is Africans don't value what they have. The Asians understand Africa better.

Not completely true. Certainly if you look at Europe the Middle ages or some call it Dark Ages lasted from the 5th Century to the 15th Century. That is a heck of a lot of time! But we could have leapfrogged all this in the same way Dubai and Singapore have done so why havent we?

The main reason is we are a country with an extraordinarily high friction rate. It's difficult getting things done but we a lot of this friction owes to the fact that you have over 50 different nationalities bunged up together with differing views, outlooks and culture. Friction filled tribal relationships have not helped.

But why am I so hopeful.

An entirely new country is being built around human capital, technology and innovation. Nigeria is the clear leader in numbers of innovation hubs, tech funding is huge and most of it is local. The new wealth isnt crude oil but people. Why isnt it changing things? Well, a lot of graduates are badly educated but entitled. They want the old economy where you go and work in a company or they become life coaches spreading ignorance and narrow perspectives in their trail. They wont get it. It's gone, dead, kaput!

Sure weve had horrid leaders but that doesnt completely explain why we are where we are. I wont go into that.

But we have made progress - huge progress. Think of Nigeria 30 years ago with an archaic telecoms system, low bandwidth, relying on 100% fossil fueled domestic energy, ( today some of us are off grid using solar), crumbling state schools and almost no private hospital system. There was no HMO, international travel was restricted to very few privileged people and income mobility was extremely narrow. Today there has been progress, not as much as we would have liked

Initial progress in any country like Nigeria is private sector led. The malls are redefining shopping, cinemas lifestyle, payment systems are creating frictionless transactions and housing developments are moving from grand luxury to income directed accomodation. You no longer need to know the bank manager to access credit.
What needs to happen is that Government needs to expand opportunities for private sector by opening up the country with rail and motorways. This is exactly what is happening.

I am a pre independence person so heck I might not see as much of the future as the really young people but believe me you are staring at a much brighter horizon than say 40 years ago. But it wont come on a plat you have to know your sectors and build the appropriate skills and networks.

Long reply. But what the..
Well Spoken. Thanks.

This is so funny.

This guy face look like he go soon get heart attack. Doing business in Nigeria no easy oh.
Fortunately, he is the type of entrepreneur Nigeria needs at the moment. If you care to know, it is very hard to stay away from Nigeria for too long if you are born in the country. People are investing back home, My brother. Europe and America have a way of jolting you back to reality after settling down there for 10 years and above. If Akon can come back to Senegal to invest in the land of his Father and Grandfather, then many Nigerians abroad should not be blamed for setting up businesses in Nigeria. Bad economy and other negative factors standing against business ventures in Nigeria should not stop Nigerian-Americans or Nigerians from following Akon's example.
