Ask your friend's Mum to give you the Cockerels feed formula . She most likely has one with her because she has customers who come to make Cockerel feed at her Mill. I have also given you another link where you can get Cockerel feed formulas. Be careful where you will buy your day old Cockerels from. Make sure you choose a good farm and hatchery when buying your stock. Another thing you can do is to go and spend a day at the feed mill owned by your friend's mum. Ask the people coming to make chicken feed where they source their chicks from. They will give you the names and addresses of farms where they get their Cockerel or Broiler chicks from. Try and read a lot of articles online about Cockerels Poultry business in Nigeria. Watch videos on YOUTUBE about cockerels business in Nigeria and other parts of Africa. You will see about 3 Cockerel feed formulas in the post. The post also has lots of information about raising Cockerels in Nigeria. Please read through the whole post and you will get useful information you need towards the success of your Poultry business plans for next year. You can also ask the feed millers for Cockerel Feed formulas. They will have at least 1 Cockerel feed formula with them . Give the Cockerels the normal feed until they are about 7-8 weeks old. After this period, you can start feeding them with food scraps and leftover food in between meals or twice a week. You can also get Pap Chaff ( Efo Ogi ) and mix it with feed and give it to the cockerels twice a week ( After the 7-8 weeks feeding on 100% Cockerel feed formula ). This will save you money. Cockerels have good meat with less fat. To be honest with you, Nigerians love meat that is a bit tough in their mouths. Do your research. Cheers.

Cockerels take 4-6 Months to mature for consumption or sales. You don't need to raise Cockerels for a year. If you feed your cockerels well, they can achieve table size in 5 Months. So you can raise Cockerels twice a year. To maximize your funds, you can focus on raising the White cockerel. It is much cheaper when you purchase them at a week old or day old. However, the price is the same with spotted Cockerels when you are selling them. I have experience in raising Chickens because my late father owned a Poultry up till 2010. You can also make your own feed by yourself. Do some research online. You can save a lot of money by making your own feed by yourself. There are feed millers all over Lagos State. Cockerels are not meant to be fat like Broilers. Heavy and Fat broilers does not mean healthy and nutritious meat . Cockerels are usually tall and sturdy and they have good meat. This is because they are active, kicking and fighting each other on a daily basis. If you feed your Cockerels well, they will be big and meaty in about 4-5 months. Thanks.

But I guess u really know what u are in for because as a newbie, u are most likely to run at a huge loss trying to make cockerel(white) profitable especially when u have up to 50 pieces. Broilers are still easiest to manage and more profitable.

@diamondedu, don't be discouraged. Go for Cockerels. Cockerels are very sturdy and they do not fall sick easily like Broilers. There are white cockerels and spotted cockerels. What you need to do is to give them the necessary medicines like Vitamins, Lasota etc. Also, you can have a mix of food for the Cockerels e.g giving them left over food and Efo Ogi ( chaff from making Pap ). Look for Pap Sellers and Eko makers in your area. They will have the left over from making Pap to sell to you. You can give this Left over ( Pap Chaff ) to your Cockerels two days of the week while you give them the normal Chicken grower feed on the other 5 days. You will save money this way. Broilers have more issues when raising them than Cockerels. If you raise your Cockerels well, they will be big and meaty. Trust me, I am speaking from experience. There are a lot of tricks for raising Cockerels successfully. Cockerels kill rats that trouble poultry businesses easily. Cockerels are also active and alert than Broilers that will just be sitting down in a corner all the time. There are threads on how to raise Cockerels on Nairaland. Cheers.

Seems you need ideas about marketing your birds. Nice one. Make sure you raise healthy and meaty birds first. If you have healthy and fleshy birds, you will attract customers very quickly. Personally, I believe Cockerels ( Spotted or White Cockerels ) are good to raise from January to December. They are very strong and are not susceptible to diseases like Broilers etc. They are also meaty when raised properly. Old layers meat is not very nutritious for consumption. To sell your chicken, please put a sign at the front of your house- ' Chicken For Sale '. Make the sign very bold with the picture of a Cockerel on it. People passing by will see the sign and start coming to buy chicken from you. This is how it starts- Word of Mouth advertising. Before you know it, everybody in your area knows you are selling Cockerels/Broilers for consumption. You can also advertise your Chicken business on Nairaland, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram etc. There is also Jiji Nigeria to advertise on . Social Media marketing will boost your Poultry business. You should also get a space in busy markets in your area from time to time to sell your Chicken. Get those basket cages and pay for a small spot in the Market to sell your Cockerels on Weekends especially. You can also supply other Chicken sellers in the market Broilers/Cockerels at wholesale prices. This means you will just be breeding the Chicken and supplying sellers at the open markets all over your Area or State ( Good business model, so to speak ). You just need to set profitable prices that will keep you in business. Do you know you can also supply Chicken to Restaurants or Hotels in your area? Nigerians eat Chicken throughout the year. I grew up in a home where we reared chickens and turkeys. Initially, we only raised Christmas and New Year Cockerels. We would raise them from September to December and start selling them a week to Christmas. The sales of our Cockerels would continue till around January 5th of the next year. What I noticed was that we still had close to 50-70 Cockerels left after the Xmas and New Year celebrations had ended. However, before the end of February of the next year, People would have bought the remaining Cockerels. This means Chickens can be sold from January to December . Interesting, isn't it? Once you can advertise that you have Chicken for sale, People will call you or come to your compound to purchase the Cockerels or Broilers from you. Nigerians are always celebrating one thing or the other. and Chicken meat is essential to these celebrations. You can erect a cage behind your house or in your compound. Buy 100 day old Cockerels and start rearing them. Feed them with food scraps and chicken feed. In about 4 months, they are ready for sale and consumption. You can have three rearing and sales cycles in a year. Don't dull, Nairalanders. .

Maybe you have not put a fellow Nigerian to run your business, they will run it aground and embezzle all your money. If you try to monitor them 24/7 you will hear them complain. We have this attitude of "he has money so let's chop our own". What I would have suggested is the managerial positions should be Indians while Nigerians will do the rest.

You're 1000% correct with what you have just said. Many Nigerian workers are not honest in their dealings with the Companies or Clients they work for. Construction workers on building sites will steal cement, gravel, wood etc. Plasterers will pocket the money given to them to buy water to mix the cement and sand together, and will use water from other uncompleted buildings on the site . If you don't buy building materials yourself, you will lose money because the engineer and site workers might inflate prices of the materials to your detriment. Truth is something they detest and you have to be careful when dealing with your workers if you are a business owner in Nigeria. You have to monitor your Business or Venture all the time because most of your workers are not interested in the success of your venture. They are only interested in their Wages and Salaries.

I think you should also consider starting an ongoing Cockerel business. Chicken meat is always in demand all year round. Chicken is not eaten at Christmas and New Year events only. So there is a market for Chicken meat throughout the year. Why don't you start a cockerel business in your backyard as a side business? You can start with about 100 to 150 Cockerels and they should be ready for sale in about 4-5 months, or in exactly 4 months. You will need to construct a chicken pen or cage, but this should not cost you a lot of money. The Chicken cage/pen will be there for the long term. Make sure the cage is elevated from the ground and that it is well constructed so that rats will not be able to enter the place. Rats can kill cockerels when they are still 'chicks' ( day old to 4 weeks old ). Do you own the home you live in? Is it your father's compound? I am asking because if you are not the owner of the compound, you might have issues with the landlord especially. If you want to start big with Cockerels production, you can rent a land somewhere and start off with about 400-500 Cockerels at a time. This business is lucrative. When the cockerels are mature, you can sell them to the public or take them to the market and sell them. You can print flyers and distribute them in your neighbourhood to advertise your Cockerels business. You will surely see clients and customers on a steady basis. I have no doubts about that. Cockerels feed is not that expensive to make. You can also compound your own feed as time goes on.
