Babzilla:You fail to notice one little detail. TETFUND. This is a centrally controlled agency that provides (not funds) facilities to educational institutions. Anything from buildings to books are 'donated' by 'the government' to 'the government'. So it is not the school fundamentally at fault but this brings me to the crown point. The structure of things in this country is doing a disservice to Nigeria. Except you give these institutions a greater degree of autonomy these things will continue. You simply cannot award a contract in Abuja for a job in Kano and not have problems. TETFUND, sports (as we have seen at the olympics), JAMB, Public works, federating States, local government. Nothing works due to the faulty structure, with everything centrally controlled. Have you noticed that every highway, every bridge, every water reservoir, every electricity pylon, every culvert, every transformer in Nigeria looks exactly alike. We are swimming in a stew of mediocrity with the way we are structured. In education there is no single centre of excellence, no Ivy league college all thanks to our educational system. |
ngoben:My dear it is usually, more than likely, 'inadequate' rather than 'substandard' materials, specifications, etc. Structures are essentially composed insitu of cement, gravel, sand and reinforcing steel bars. These do not vary substantially enough to bring down buildings. What however often happens is that they are not provided in enough quantities to meet design requirements for materials. Rebar, cement, granite and sand in typical decreasing unit costs. In that order will be gouged to recover monies paid as bribes. Incidentally rebar is the 'skeleton' of any structure so inadequate rebars is like a person with fewer and fewer bones. There can also be inadequate specifications such as shallower foundations, thinner shear walls, inadequate dewatering, inadequate compaction, etc. The peculiarity of engineering is such that you do not get to asses the product before purchase so if you cannot obtain quality while it is being made, well you may pay a high price. |
Abdulsalami the civil engineer. Bridge building things. I have a feeling this tour has something to do with his last visit to Aso Rock. Good one. |
Dannyset:Well if he's going down he shouldn't forget to use Dogara's babanriga as a parachute for a less bumpier landing and strip the counterpunching top argumentator completely n.ak.ed. Corruption just landed a left hook to Jubrin's temple. |
daylae:How I wish the Nigerian elections were staggered with the Legislative polls coming half way between the Executive polls, it would really ignite debate and ramp up pressure on the ruling or opposition party as it frequently happens in America. |
The war on corruption is just a tickle thougitless of a scratch, thoughtless of a dent. |
HAH:As poor as public service is in Nigeria, when the telecom networks do their usual upgrades all you get is a text message, annoying service disruptions and then its back again in a jiffy with lots of apologies. Same for banks, same for tv stations, same for airlines, etc. When it comes to petroleum everyone in Nigeria knows when the damn refineries break down and to maintain them or repair them is a national event with debates, talking drums, lightning and thunder. Abeg is a refinery infinitely more complex than a cement plant and Dangote has several of them and I cannot remember any time cement became scare because of TAM. The private sector is leagues ahead of government in handling business and industry. All a well meaning, sincere government needs to do is create the stage for the actors and do all it takes for them to put up a five star performance. Even PHCN since privatisation is striving to come out of the grave of despair. The lame excuses are receding. |
Sibrah:Then you downsize to what you can afford but what is the government doing, further employment: CBN, FIRS, Immigration, Police, etc. Instead of getting smarter it is the same old profligacy. What do you expect. If Nigeria was a business, your business, will you increase staff when your sales are down. Will you not find the technology to slimfit into your earnings. Unmitigated expansion in times of abundance is reckless, in times of want is just crazy. No wonder they hate the IMF and its austerity message so much, they hate the truth yet are crying and finger pointing. Who cares about what the past administration earned. You might as well go back to Gowon to ask what the size of the civil service was. I repeat again, if the next administration is faced with an oil price of 15 to 20 dollars, will it be right to crticize the present one. Am waiting for credible answers. |
Na dis scratch you take dey disturb oga officer on duty. You know how many AK don pass go Sambisa lanlord dem when una dey dance masquerade. Chai. Abeg go see doctor for dat stand and fall. If no be tombo, e no normal oh. |
And this goes beyond the oil industry. I am equally and apostle of developmental responsibility in other sectors and I have mentioned before that if we played our cards right the likes of Julius Berger having enjoyed contracts worth hundreds of billions over the years should grow up and take charge. Look at the airport road in Abuja, the gateway to the nation, abandoned, disgusting. Haven't they grown enough to complete that job on their own. Aren't they ripe enough for PPP. Shouldn't the government be leveraging on them as a fiscal deficit reduction tool. Shouldn't they be subsidizing our public works. No. They even take more. They have not outgrown their business model. We gain little from them. Net capital flight. This one too na free trade WTO wahala? No. It is because we have no expectation, no standard, no developmental plan, no vision. Ask what the Chinese did to the High Speed Maglev Engineering vendors. Nigerians should stop this docile, weak, beggarly attitude, push through the pain and get going. The government should stop playing politics with the state of the nation because they are in power. They should stop explaining and start galvanising the people to work and sacrifice and doing stuff. |
Sibrah:Oga. Government has no business building refineries. Fuel is a product not a social service. Get over octane addiction. Government should only create a conducive environment, till the field for the seeds to be planted by the citizens. In the strict sense of it, government should only provide infrastructure. Oga. Refinery na infrastructure?, no be business again? You can understand that as a child in nationhood government in the 70's and 80's did everything as a parent for the people but at a stage the boy has to become a man and leave home. At a stage the father has to become a grand father. At a stage daughter has to get a kitchen of her own to command. At a stage son will start to spend his own money buying stuff his parents may not like. What does dad do, it is not his money. At a stage Nigeria has grown to produce the richest man in Africa and many more billionaires, industrialists, entrepreneurs, executives, scholars, professionals, etc. Should the country continue to buy fuel for them, continue giving them or should they take responsibility to give back to society and country. TY Danjuma and co have been drilling oil for 20 odd years, some of them have refineries abroad and then they come home to buy cheap 'government fuel'. Is that right. Is is right for a man to be in his father's house eating his mother's food at 50 when he has a job. Haba. Abeg rethink. We are not as useless as you make us to be. Government has no business building refineries 60 years after independence and 50 years after oil became mainstay. |
Deen77:What if another leader comes in 2019 and oil trades for 20 dollars, won't people say the same thing about Buhari, refineries, debts and savings. And believe me, oil once sold for 13 dollars not too long ago. Up and down, left and right, have Nigerians learnt anything. You guys and silly, pointless arguments. If Buhari wants to build a refinery he can take a loan and start building one tomorrow. Jonathan could have built a refinery at any time during his tenure but the consensus then and now is that government is not in the best position to operate them in the long term and the nation could not continue to subsidize consumption if it was interested in development. That is why even subsidy is ended. The petroleum industry has not failed, it is succeeding. The changes we see though painful are for the better. |
989900:They should dig the ground and bury those refineries. Not a penny more should be spent on them. Let us continue to spend massively on imports. |
HAH:Reasonable. And what Kachikwu is saying is true but my concern is that he is spicing it with a bit of scaremongering so that typically the Nigerian will run screaming for the doors demanding 'government action' which means the tradition of corruptive intervention. In Nigeria we make fires to make money. The refineries should be let loose even if 101% of our fx is spent on fuel imports. Not a penny more should be spent on trying to wake a dying, dead horse. Suffering is the tonic of the soul. Nigerians want omlettes without eggshells in the bin. |
Joshrob:He's right. Can't really see the point except from a sporting point of view concerning his fc, if and only if he is soliciting the kind of exposure that grabs the attention of investors/coop sponsors. Dunno which one it is. Let's stay tuned, but I honestly rather like to see him borrow a page from Dangote and build a refinery instead of trying to be a toyboy premiership loving russian oligarch. |
No wonder Nigeria has not qualified for anything. No footy in 2017, imagine, ONE WHOLE YEAR of nothing. I hope they will be expunged from the 2017 budget and the Glass House put on lease. Let them return to their villages. Reprobate ignoramuses. |
Kaybaba5:There is a reason the 'gift' was made to individuals and not the team. To avoid the piracy of the thieving administrators. Siasia representing the coaching crew and Mikel representing the playing team. Disbursement will have been discussed privately over the phone, just to get government hands off the cash. How much of FIFA's anual and tournament cash has ever reached the players and coaches. Even the corporate cash donations of times past hardly ever gets to the intended beneficiaries intoto. |
repogirl:Are they mad. Is the Japanese donor now the NFF sponsor. Did they do anything to get him to donate to the team. I can give or reward the team in anyway ex-officio. It is a private matter. The man is a private citizen (not an NGO) so he doesn't have to register jack. The NFF is trying to be clever by twisting it to appear as a team donation but the intent was clear by the clever surgeon, 'To Siasia and Mikel' so it cannot be taxed, does not have to be declared (except c/o bank to CBN) and cannot be confiscated by the villans in the glass house who have a CONTRACT with the players and coaches they MUST fulfill. Rogues. Reports to FIFA is loading. |
WOCKHARDI:Corruption can never end in Nigeria. Na the Japanese man I blame. He was too hasty. Should have waited till they decamped. Didn't he know that the mismanagement by the gang he gave the cash is the very reason he had to provide the cash. Its like Buhari appointing Dasuki to head the war against terror. Deja Vu. |
stsinner:No, am damn serious that Michael Phelps has more gold medals than the whole of West Africa in Olympic history. |
HAH:So corruption has defeated us. I thought in this regime, under this President we won't hear of such things. |
Henrybright:Can it get worse. Can we sink any lower. What is wrong with this country for heavens sake. Too, too bad. Everyone is just discouraged. |
Nothing will come out of Arsenal with Wenger as manager. Five points already dropped without playing the big guns yet. Another season of algebra. |
kobonaire:What about that Ivorien chap who won gold with the last taekwando kick. |
Liverpool already behind. |
At least he is saying the truth. That things are bad but by 2019 there is no guarantee they will get better. He is simply saying he has no plan to make the electoral process better. If the electoral process cannot be bettered by this regime, GEJ remains the best President to date. |
cruzita:They are made of cast alloys locally, very light but not very strong. |
Tolexander:Hmmm.... before and now shows who's enjoyed the union. Congrats to the couple. Many more years of bliss. |
Honestly, just don't know what to say. The girls did everything right in tryjng to save the situation, the relationship but the man/animal was insistent on blood. Shoukd have told their parents so that a higher level of wisdom may have prevailed. Pre-meditated, the guy should hang. |
NOETHNICITY:Then you have no option than to choose true federalism because if a section of the country cannot rule by default, how can this country then work in this set up. We are a long way to development but I'm confident your children having suffered so much will think differently from you with a truly objective mindset, free of bias. When they represent Nigeria in sports, you cheer them, in many oyher walks if life you hail them, but in politics you distrust them. Where does this paradox come from. There is something wrong going on in your psyche, and I'm sorry folks like you have to live with this torture. |
Chai, this Zlatan na name of wizard. |
Onegai:Just imagine the kind of question you ask in the first para. Can it be possible that the depth of communication with the strange women on the phone can rival that of his wife at home. If he didn't continue with the story of 'other' women trying to break into his marraige, what will have been the excuses you women folks give. You guys are always seeking the moral high ground cum victim ticket in man v woman matters. And still will not answer the fundamental question. |
