ogb5: If only Obasanjo had stopped the introduction of Sharia in the North during his tenure, terrorists would not have been emboldened to trample on our rights today.
The problems we are facing today is an accumulation of years of misrule with Obasanjo alone accounting for 11 years of the misrule. Obasanjo could not have stopped the "introduction" of Sharia in the North. Sharia has always been enshrined in the Nigerian constitution. Why that was allowed in a so-called secular country is another topic entirely but it is what it is. What some of the northern states tried to do under Obasanjo was to implement full sharia as stipulated in the Koran which recommends the cutting of limbs and stoning to death as opposed to the modified sharia recommended by the Penal code which replaced these extreme measures with various jail terms. This was obviously a political move at the time. Following the religious riots in Kaduna and the reprisal crisis in Aba in year 2000, the council of State met and unanimously issued a statement directing all Northern States that had adopted the "full sharia" to immediately revert to the status quo antebellum. That is why, beyond the hapless fellow who was used as a scapegoat in Zamfara, no other person suffered such a gruesome fate. While I agree with you that the challenges today are an accumulation of years of misrule under various military and civilian regimes, claiming that Obasanjo's refusal to stop the full implementation of Sharia led to the advent of Boko Haram is an obfuscation of the facts of the matter. |

Monimatic: The Catholic Church has washed its hands off the ongoing controversy over the strong criticism of President Goodluck Jonathan by Rev Father Ejike Mbaka of Adoration Ministries in Enugu, accusing him of double-speaking.
The church said it did not authorise Mbaka to speak on its behalf, insisting that it is wrong for Mbaka to endorse the president and later warn the electorate not to vote for him during the February 14 presidential poll.
The church added that it did not have an official position on whose candidate the Catholic faithful should vote for, saying that as the largest Christian group, it is illogical for it to direct members to vote for certain candidates as the voters have the prerogative to exercise their inalienable rights in such a situation.
A catholic faithful, Mr Callistus Ebue, disclosed this during an interview with LEADERSHIP last night in Enugu.
He said, “The Catholic Church did not authorise Rev Father Mbaka to speak on its behalf. There is no way the church, with millions of its members, make a pronouncement on who to vote for during the February 14 presidential election. The church does not have an official position in this regard. The decision to vote for any candidate is the prerogative right of the church faithful just like any other Nigerian.”
While some of the Catholics in Enugu argue that Mbaka might have been led by the Holy Spirit in his pronouncement over Jonathan’s re-election bid, others said that the cleric ought not to have dabbled into the murky waters of politics.
According to a Catholic knight, Sir Abuchi Anueghiagu, Mbaka was initially inspired by the Holy Spirit to endorse the re-election of Jonathan, saying, however, that whatever Mbaka pronounced during his homily at the Adoration Ministries ground on December 31, 2014, was also a function of the leading of the Holy Spirit.
According to him, as an ordained priest in charge of a parish, Christ the King Parish, and the spiritual director of Adoration Ministries, nobody is qualified to challenge any sermon he delivers from the altar.
But another knight of the Catholic Church who spoke to LEADERSHIP on condition of anonymity condemned Mbaka of speaking from both sides of his mouth.
He said that having previously blessed Jonathan on his re-election bid, he ought not to have made a volte-face. He advised priests to be cautions of their pronouncements from the altar, as whatever they say has a way of affecting their followers either negatively or positively.
The Catholic bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rev Dr Calistus Onaga, could not be reached at the time of filing this report last night.

Politics › Re: I’ll Sanction Mbaka If He’s Under My Diocese, Says Onaiyekan by Reptyle(m): 9:37am On Jan 05, 2015 |
TeaParty:
More troubles appear to be staring the controversial Catholic Priest and Founder of Adoration Ministry, Enugu Catholic Archdiocese, Rev. Fr Ejike Mbaka, in the face following his statement urging Nigerians to reject President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and vote for Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd ) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 14 presidential election.
Speaking to THISDAY in an exclusive interview, the Catholic Bishop of Abuja Metropolitan See, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, said given the rules of the church, Fr. Mbaka ought to be sanctioned.
This came as Onaiyekan cautioned the PDP and opposition, All Progressives Congress (APC) to desist from campaigns of calumny.
He stated that prophecies of doom ahead of 2015 elections notwithstanding, “PDP and APC have no right to disorganise Nigeria.”
Onaiyekan, commenting on Fr Mbaka, said the priest went overboard in his statement insinuating that President Jonathan’s administration has been plagued with ‘bad luck’ and poor performance.
Onaiyekan distanced the Catholic Church from Mbaka’s statement, stating that, “Mbaka will take responsibilities for his own actions. I do not believe in my mind that the way things are in Nigeria, any Catholic priest has the mandate to decide which of the political contestants should be voted for. What most of us will do is to tell people to vote according to their conscience and then, we tell the authorities to allow people to vote freely and fairly.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if most people are not happy with the statement he made. From my reactions, you should see that I do not agree with him. I don’t believe a priest should be doing that.
“But, like I said, Mbaka is a priest of his own type. If he was in my archdioceses, I will have sanctioned him long ago for the kind of things and utterances that he makes. But, he is not under my diocese; he has a Bishop to handle that if there is any need,” the Cardinal observed.
Onaiyekan, rather maintained that Mbaka had earlier made insinuations that President Jonathan’s wife, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, will continue in office. “I hope that people are not thinking that we are sending Mbaka to talk rubbish, how can they think that? If you want to hear anything even not official but at least, authoritative, then, you listen to the bishops. Rather than him and I don’t see any bishop talking that way.”
Meanwhile, President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama, said Nigerians should avoid hasty generalisation, as the statement of one Catholic priest cannot be taken to represent the voices of more than 30 million Catholics in Nigeria.
Kaigama told THISDAY that though Mbaka could not have been speaking for the Nigerian Catholic Church, Nigerians should avoid making unguided statements and hasty generalisation on national issues like the 2015 general election.
“There are more than 30 million Catholics in Nigeria, Fr Mbaka is just one Catholic, if he makes a statement, it cannot be the voices of more than 30 million Nigerian Catholics speaking.
“So Nigerians should avoid hasty generalisation. Mbaka cannot speak for the church, only the CBCN can speak for the church. Those who are complaining, should go to Fr Mbaka and find out why he is saying what he is saying,” Kaigama said.
The CBCN President informed THISDAY that it is completely out of place for a Catholic priest to be partisan.
“I tell you, even the Canon Law forbid a priest to engage in partisan politics,” Kaigama told THISDAY.
Asked if there would be punitive measures meted out to Mbaka, Kaigama said: “If the law has been abused, we will ensure that we enforce the law. In this case, it is not the Catholic church; the church did not send him to say those things.
“Mbaka belongs to a diocese, so if the Bishop finds out that he has fallen out of line, the Bishop can call him to order,” he said.
“Mbaka is just expressing his opinion, if we want to make a political statement, we know how to do it. That we keep quiet and we are marginalised, does not mean we don’t have strength. With more than 30 million Catholics, we have the strength,” Kaigama submitted.
The Archbishop of Jos argued that there was no public uproar when the same Mbaka assured the first lady of continuity.
Fr. Mbaka has come under intense condemnation following his sermon last week, lampooning Jonathan’s administration for poor performance.
His comment had elicited public outcry, especially, among the teeming Catholic population in South-east and South-south parts of the country where President Jonathan has a strong support base. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/i-ll-sanction-mbaka-if-he-s-under-my-diocese-says-onaiyekan/198424/ The bolded statements above tell me what I need to know about the boldness displayed by Reverend Mbaka in his volte face The truth is that no priest of the catholic church will speak so boldly without the support, tacit or direct, of the senior clergy. Impossicant!!! |

Say NO to violence That is not a spear. That is a pen....The symbol of the now defunct CPC on whose platform Buhari contested the 2011 elections. Buhari in the excerpt urged the people to vote and monitor their votes till the votes are counted and results announced. He then said if anyone tries to prevent them either from voting or monitoring their votes, such a person should be destroyed. "Ku halaka su" directly translated to English means "destroy them." It is manifestly different from "Ku kashe su" which means "Kill them!" Buhari called for the people to defend their votes by all means....not to kill anyone. |

But to think that some of you actually believe that nonsense is upsetting to say the least. Buhari, had a muslim deputy and was in absolute control of the nation for 20 months. The level of ignorance on this nairaland.com is alarming. I wonder if you people know the amount of education and training that goes into making a General in the Nigerian Armed Forces....or any armed forces anywhere in the world. Military people usually get to attend some of the best schools in the world. One of the best tertiary institutions in Nigeria for instance is the Defence Academy in Kaduna. Soldiers graduate from there with a degree and go on to attend various A. Rated training programmes all over the world. Your average Nigerian military officer (commisioned) is exposed to the kind of education and training some of you can only dream of but won't ever be able to achieve.
