A few days ago, Nigerians woke up to the news of Burna boy’s selection as a nominee for the ‘Best World Music Album’ for his album ‘African Giant.’ This category is for albums containing 51% playing time of new vocal or instrumental world music recordings. Since the news broke out, social media has been agog with celebrations as though he had already won the award. And while the possibility of that cannot be ruled out, some factors would virtually militate against his emergence as a Grammy award winner in 2020.

The style of voting used predominantly in the BBNaija Live TV show seems to be the most popular in Nigeria at the moment. Lots of Nigerians recharged over hundreds of thousands of naira to vote for Tacha, or Mercy and other favorite housemates. However, this voting process does not work in the Grammys. The absence of this voting style would mostly be an impediment to Burna emerging a winner.
