kabe1: Russian systems have always been 100% local since 2014.
I wonder how you're arguing with an OEM.
Do you work for Sukhoi Design Bureau?
Does Russia build military equipment using US dollars?
What's your rational to doubt Rostec? Obviously you are not an engineer. Where does that happen?. I am saying they are going to have to build the 100% local content from scratch meaning I already know it is a possibility but it will take time for a new type of aircraft. To make matters more interesting, this is also supposed to be low cost as in, use existing components as much as possible. Where does that happen in less than 5 years |

kabe1: On the contrary, I'm a big fan of the JF-17, and I think it's an excellent aircraft, well suited for Nigeria's current security challenges.
However I don't think the JF-17 is an aircraft for the future, as you know aircrafts are supposed to last a minimum of 30 years in service. Threats would change in that time, and I don't think the JF-17 is the ideal aircraft to deal with that threat.
I'm proposing that we cease on any further purchases of the JF-17, invest in a capable LIFT aircraft, the M346 is ideal, we do not need the FA, as this would mean additional costs.
Purchase another batch of 12 Tucanos.
Increase our Attack helicopter and MI-17 numbers.
Invest in tactical transport aircrafts as the C-130s are old.
In a couple years time the SU-75 would be mature(in the event it goes into full production), purchase that instead. I disagree with your suggestion on the JF13 specifically forbthe Block 3 (even though I agree Block 2 may be too transitory in terms of capability versus value for money We may need 3/9 ratio for the M346 - LIFT/Fighter Attack. The SU 75 is not happening. Russia would not be developing that aircraft in the next ten years. I agree we should consider increase Super Tucano fleet in 3s and 4s over the next four years. The aircraft has other civillian nation building applications aside from its potent internal security uses. |

youghs: It can never be $25-$30m Of course it can never be this cheap. Don't also forget this country is under comprehensive US sanctions. They won't get specialised equipment like some avionics, displays, ejection seats, some materials for carbon fibre, some engine alloys, chips et.c..which means Russia would need to get close to 100% local content for these sub components of components of systems. This means they would be developing a lot of stuff locally. How then can this aircraft be cheap? |

It's high time we ground or phase out the Alpha jets or use them & do trade by barter with any country that will give us infantry hardwares or spare parts etc. We kuku no get pass two currently that are operational, the JF 17s & the Tucanos will fill the void. It's target at South-American, African and South Asian clients.
Apparently the Russian MoD would buy them too. They are joking. That's $90m at least. Don't forget they are exporting to partly finance the development of their own line of aircrafts to tackle F22s and B21s |

xterra2: 1. 2021 Supplementary Budget Details
Recall the FG is going to borrow Over N800Billion for 2021 supplementary budget which Security agencies would get ~N722Billion for capital expenditure.
Sha here are the best snippets
Army Vehicle Requirement 48,670,100,000 Defence equipment N96 Billion
Navy Arms and Ammo Requirement N36B Purchase of equipment N34Billion and Medium term equipment N21B
Overall the Navy is going to spend N157Billion without mentioning any specific purchase (e.g ships)
Airforce
Additional aircraft N140Billion Other equipment N84B
However, if we add these two items we get N224Billion, in US dollars using CBN exchange rate of 410 that is $546.3 Million. So that is some serious money. Excluding the Tucanos, i can't remember Airforce spending such amount at once.
Overall the airforce is spending N239Billion
2. Super Tucanos may be delivered tomorrow, in fact it would be according to the Americans . Around May 7th The Perm Sec Defence said below, and it is on its way so i think the Schedule they gave is on track.
"We paid $496millon to the American government and it is getting to three years now, the Super Tucanos are yet to arrive. Last week, we received an email that it will come by 21st of July" -
^^ So in the next 24 hours it should be in Nigeria We can only hope the Chiefs would tackle some fundamental problems that has been recurrent in this war for years which the Super Tucano cannot solve. God bless you for getting this document. I scoured the budget office website for weeks looking for it What "recurrent problems"? You see the "additional aircraft requirements "?. That's at least probably to bring JF17 up to squadron level numbers. |

GabrielYulaw: I better wade in here. Did we overpay for the Tucanos? Yes. Are they what's needed right now? No.
Better kits and equipment, plus improved troop welfare and masses of heavy weaponry would have been mote optimal. Buying 10 tanks from china today, 6 tanks from Ukraine tomorrow and some MRAPS from Proforce next month simply doesn't cut it in my humble opinion.
Sincerely, Nigeria is a country that never lacks for money. What we do best is throwing money at problems hoping it will just go away. Deeper examination of what we are facing and possible solutions never seems to occur to us.
So, the latest estimate has it that over 350k people have been killed in this war so far and frankly the future does not inspire me with confidence. From Boko Haram we have gone to ISWAP and now Bandits and Fulani herdsmen are all over the place, killing without limits and having fun.
How many of you here can confidently travel from one state to the other without killing a ram and asking for the blessing of the almighty? This country is fvcked. If you can't see that then you have a massive problem.
Now, say you have a very deadly insurgency in your country and have $600 million to buy the kind of arms that will bring the war to a very speedy and satisfactory conclusion, what do you do with that kind of money?
I don't know about you, but there's simply no way in hell I'm gonna use that money to buy a dozen turboprops. I don't care if the planes in question came with a million free rounds of ammo, rockets and sensors. I don't care if Thanos himself put them together.
What you guys seem to be forgetting here is that the North and everywhere else seeing unrest and killings is a very large place. I seriously doubt that even a hundred Tucanos would be enough to provide adequate coverage, not forgetting that not all the planes bought will be airworthy at the same time.
If I had $600 million and was told to go and shop for war-ending weapons, I would take like $200 million, go to eastern Europe or Russia and buy or beg for around 500 old tanks, from T-62s up, plus IFVs. These can be speedily modernized and the tanks turned into heavy IFVs that no bandit or ISWAP can touch without using heavy anti tank missiles like the Kornet.
I still have $400 million, right? With $200 million I can buy hundreds of heavy artillery and long range MLRS from Russia, Turkey and China. Some of these MLRS will exceed 200km in range. The normal range of any arty on my shopping list should be at least 30km with standard ammo, and double that with RAP.
Then with the remainder of the funds I will buy as many MALE drones as I can. Mainly from China, but the reliability of their aircraft is doubtful.
So, what will I use all these I bought at mammy market to do? It's simple. The IFVs are there to ensure our troops are safer while moving around. The heavy artillery and rocket launchers are there to engage the enemy wherever they can be found, day or night. We don't need manned aircraft for that. What's needed is to establish bases mainly in the northeast and near our borders that are like 30-50km from each other, all equipped with heavy artillery and mutually supporting.
The drones I bought should be in the air 24/7 and concerns about their data transmission capacity can be remedied by buying satellite bandwidth or launching our own satellite. What this means is of course that with drones covering most bandit and ISWAP-heavy areas, there's no way they can pop up without being immediately targeted with arty or rocket fire, with eyes in the sky making sure the munitions raining down are going where they are supposed to. And all without any putting any troops in danger.
My apologies if the above sounds like daydreaming or science fiction, but it does appear feasible and something I would do if I was given $600 million to buy weapons that will change this war for the better. Not even twenty F-22 Raptors a can win this war for us, let alone a dozen Tucanos, unless these turboprops are carrying atomic weapons, as Joscofelix might say This is a lot of falsehood and it is based on ignorance and stupid Nigerian culture of commoditizing procurement. Nigeria paid money for hardware + facilities + training + weapons + lifecycle support. There are other service elements like weapons integration works. Inside the money earmarked for the programme which I am sure is still remaining a tidy sum, your legislators sponsored themselves to inspect the aircraft. I am sure there are still sums remaining for more advanced training for the maintenance crews. If you don't know stuff, you ask questions instead of adding up aircraft numbers and units of weapons with a calculator like some Iboman buying tiles gor his next building. You are making a case for drones BUT why are people so amateurish about these things. Is it PS5 and Xbox mentality carried so far. Drones are useful but their deployments for impacting the battlefields require some rejigging + it will take some time to get the right density in terms of numbers for them to be impactful like manned aircraft. A drone can also drop a maximum of 300kg of ordnance say. How is that going to impact significantly against an enemy hiding under trees or inside caves in a very widely dispersed pattern AND an enemy that is always hiding ...period. The Turkish drones that did so well against Armenia were operating in open terrain with minimum of vegetation and bush cover. They were also only effective against an attacking enemy |

I got dogs abuse and a barrage of vitriolic rhetoric sent my way, with you mostly on the side of negativity.
Nigeria is facing an existent crisis and somebody is spending $600 million to acquire A-29 Super Tucano and add ons, for an aircraft that has taken 5 years or thereabouts for the 2/3 few to arrive. That incomprehensibly SHOCKING.
I also talked about the possibility of them being susceptible to rudimentary AA Fire from the plethora of enemy technical on the ground. Do not forget this is an aircraft that is supposed to be for CAS - close Air Support. The noise from the Tucano makes its presence well know before it even arrives on the battle scene it is much slower than an Alpha jet , so how safe is it for pilots, time will tell.
The USAF and NATO do not use any of these turbo prop aircraft beyond the experimental, I wonder why
I over flogged the comparison of the Wing Loong 2 UAV's nonetheless Pakistan has just bought 48 estimated cost plus munitions and technology transfer $65 million.
If 48 Wing Loong 2 UAV's were deployed in the North of Nigeria it would literally change the entire course of this war and reduce our casualties tremendously and with ground support almost end Boko Haram. My friend you must know that stand-off attack capability is the great advantage of Super Tucano. It irritates when people say the Super Tucanoes are slow and then wonder why it is doing well in COIN in the same breath. Stand-Off is the answer. The guided bombs will hit you from 3km away. Decades after Liberia and Sierra Leone and many upgrades, Alpha jets are still diving low to deliver ordinance. Hopefully that is behind us |

djon78: It's not fake news
I blame PDP governments of Obasanjo to Good luck Jonathan
How can they build power plants very far away from the Niger Delta region where gas fields are located
Where the power plants were built are very far from gas Fields
To supply gas you must pipe gas from the gas Fields which will cost billions of dollars
They were just dishonest about the whole thing or they never wanted steady electricity in Nigeria
Nigerias has fields can power entire Africa for electricity Just put the power plants where gas is available And you have electricity It's not rocket science Very easy But the politicians don't want to do the right thing You obviously don't know much about gas. Gas is the fuel of choice even better when utilisation is far from where it is produced. The problem with the PDP administrations was petro centricity of thinking. They really did not see Nigeria as anything more than oil and gas. To make matters worse for the power sector, they put 80% of new power plants on associated gas. This is gas that comes out with oil. To reduce flaring and make money from the gas that was being flared, they gathered them up and compressed it into a massive pipe network. Very good idea. The only problem is that when oil production stops, there is no power. The main oil fields providing gas to the pipeline network that supplies the gas plants are now shutdown due to community, maintenance and operational issues. GEJ in particular hitched Nigeria too unsafely to unreliable Niger Delta oil and gas supply. |
