Though not entirely new to the UK since 2002, however when I took the plunge in 2007 (HSMP), I wished I know or have a forum like this back then. Some decisions would have been taken differently. Nonetheless, I'm still grateful to God. We shall all get there within and without UK.

Thanks Godkiaz. Apparently, most bank don't process edubond through Form-A, which is unfortunate. Well, nothing much one can do. Technically though, edubond ought to fall under university (living) expenses!
Nonetheless, searching through this thread, some have successfully funded their edubond through Form-A while others had to use Dom account. What is even intriguingly is that branches of the same bank process differently: some do, some don't!!

Most banks, especially the ones in Lagos, will decline transacting Edubond using Form-A as it's not considered to be a Tuition fee payment.
That doesn't mean it's totally impossible. In all, make sure you followed a normal banking process and every transaction done inside the bank hall should you find someone willing to help you with this.

From Sept 2021, there's been some changes to the pathway to getting qualified. That doesn't mean there are no challenges.
SQE 1 and SQE 2 (written) can now be taken at test center 'abroad' (outside of the UK). See the link on the Lawsociety webpage where it says ... Find your nearest test centre on the Pearson website
If the test centers in Nigeria (or Ghana or Cameroon) are no longer working, let them raise it with the UK Lawsociety.
NB: the costs are not pocket friendly!
Let the family read the provisions of the legal body and inquire from legal associations.
In my view, if SQE 1 and SQE 2 (written) are done before hitting the UK, it
1. Reduces the barrier
2. Should reduce the stress
3. Should make it even easier to take on non-Solicitors roles (such as those in the corporate)
4. Reduce the time to getting fully qualified. NB: SQE 2 (oral) must be done when he gets to the UK.

Plus, it's not 'easy' by any means. It can be done in about a year plus but it's intense and the person has to be ready to study as if he was back in law School (lawyers will understand). @Sokeril, there are three options:

1. Come to the UK, prepare and write the SQE to qualify as a solicitor and then apply to work as a lawyer.
2. Apply directly to firms as a foreign-qualified lawyer. Many firms recruit Nigerian practitioners since we share the same system of law and they often have cross-border transactions that involve Nigeria. This will only work if he has solid transactional experience in a highly in-demand area of practise - finance/power/construction/tech etc., not stuff like criminal defense, divorce or petty practice generally.
3. Plan to work in roles that are legal but not directly practising as a lawyer as in going to court - so that's things like compliance, data protection, Intellectual property etc. This is the most straightforward and what I would recommend. While doing this he can then decide if he wants to shoot for a law firm using one of the other routes.

As to whether he should or should not, it depends on what his expertise is. If he's doing petty stuff like police station work and CAC registrations, then he'll find it more difficult. If he has solid, internationally-marketable experience though, he should definitely move. His skills will be valued and rewarded much much more financially and otherwise. There's a reason why partner-level lawyers from tier 1 firms are leaving to posts abroad.

Overall though, he would probably be much better off abroad. I don't know his exact status in Naija but unless he's working for a tier 1, it's unlikely that he's earning anything close to what he would be earning in the UK (full-time as a dependent) even if he has to take a junior role to start with, even when adjusted for living expenses. I would say he should just bite the bullet and travel - worst case scenario is he doesn't like it and he goes back.

You are absolutely correct. However, it cuts beyond the tech and researcher route. There’s the media route, the architecture route, the graphics design route, the entertainment route as well. With the Global Talent Visa, getting an endorsement and notifying UKVI pre application of an endorsement guarantees that one actually gets the visa. It’s a very detailed process and an application for endorsement is highly scrutinised but it’s not a hard thing to get and one can always appeal by reapplying if you fail the first time. The list of requirement gives one many options to pull from. I usually apply for things myself as I can be very detailed with applications. However with this one, o boy, I’ve had to speak to a consultant because I don’t want stories.

To a large extent, Amarathripple0 is on point regarding the Global Talent, just the 'anyone'.
Moreover, Global Talent is not as restrictive as it appears, especially as it's portrayed to be.

There’s a whole list of categories, exceptional talent doesn’t mean I have to have created something unimaginable. It’s just being skilled at what you do be it in Architecture, Technology, Grafix Design/Animation, Media etc. Also "top people" can be anyone in the field of interest; For example, someone that owns a start-up that has scaled, someone’s that owns a company that is profitable, a Professor or someone that heads a department in a company. Two broad sub-route are getting endorsement based on one's skills set (exceptional or promising) and/or based on enterprising idea through a UK accelerator programme?

The researcher route would appeal to those that are research 'active'. Although a PhD is expected, it is not an absolute bar. IMHO, even if with a Master, one might scale through: your publications and research outputs count. The researcher route has about four sub-routes. The two I consider straightforward are
- Receiving a research fund (NB: this is from a UK listed research agency and not just the ones you get for doctorate research)
- get a (qualifying) research job

This is for 2 years and does not qualify for settlement. However, upon setting up a biz, one can switch to innovator route and start countdown to ILR.

Because according to them, freelance jobs will distract you from your studies and it cannot be monitored to ensure you are only utilising 20hours and not more hours. To be honest, I’m not sure they can really tell if you have a side hustle as these payments are not tied to your NI. However, better safe than sorry, as a quick google search will bring up your up work or Fiverr profile.. unless of course, you use an alias.

For coverage, seems there're just four providers: EE, O2, 3, and Vodafone. 3 seems to lead from behind fighting relegation. O2 appears to lead the log but not sure if that's an Arsenal temporal or for real. Vodafone comes next as being robust and all time championship qualifier, but the fall flat with 5G. However, EE is enterprising; not sure whether they're real contender like Tottenham or maybe Brighton.

Salford council replied ... You are correct in that you are not able to claim 30 hours as you have no recourse to public funds. ...
Then the Salford official went on to address other non-pertinent areas!
Comes back to conclude ... but their children are still accessing a full time nursery place at a Maintained Primary School with no additional costs.

Now, from a legal hat, when it comes to interpretation, the response from Salford Council is RED flag. This ought to be QED.
However, there's room for subjective interpretation giving the process for accessing 30 hours.

The emphasis here is Maintained Primary School, whether maintained nursery or reception.
The defn for Maintained school is one under the (direct) control of local council but follows national curriculum.

By term time, do we assume you mean before expiration of your student visa (previously Tier 4 if issued b4 2021)

Matter at hand:
- How long was the conviction for. I.e the jail term: less than or over 4 years.
- What are the factual rehabilitation steps/actions in the 14 years post deportation
- What are the tangible/reputable endeavour(s) indicative of remodeled, model citizen.

The rule of thumb is that if conviction is for 4yrs or more, refusal is almost certain. However, even at that, it is not absolute. For less terms, there's still hurdles. It gets more finicky with DBS, ATAS.

I have a peculiar case with regards to a friend who was jailed in the canada and deported to Nigeria some 14 years ago. He has since remodeled himself and become a model citizen, raising a family. He wants to apply for a masters in the uk and intends to give full disclosure when applying for his Visa. What are his chances of getting his visa approved? Anyone know of a similar situation and gotten approval?

In South Africa, if you're on medical aid, you get treatment, GP or specialist. Some specialist might take weeks or few months. Emergency is mostly within hours. That's seemly far off the experience some are having in the UK. However, experience in public health in SA, paints a totally different apposite picture.
In 9ja, fortunately and unfortunately, it's money for hand, back for ground! Although, not all private are same!! On the sidelines, glad that PYO made a point in getting his knee surgery done in 9ja!

Not having worked in a big 4 or audit firm is no barrier. When I was appointed the first time in a big 4, I was coming from govt. Second time, I was coming from consulting. I'm outta: Pay my dues!!
Understanding how the big 4 (and typical large audit firm) operate and composed is important. Aside the 'audit' arm, there are so many others; advisory (like for me). Some still have technology deployment even post #Enron

If he works with a smaller firm(big 10), he stands a chance. I know a guy from PKF Kenya that got a manager role in a big4, another from an indigenous firm in South Africa got an assistant manager role. Just have the relevant experience, package your CV well and be prepared to defend your CV during the interview stages.

Advision:
If you haven't got any audit experience, you stand very little chance of getting an experienced role in the audit arm..and I do not think they will offer him EL opportunities...
