FashionRe: Ladies: what do you carry or keep in your hand bags? by Seun(mod): 3:26pm On Nov 02, 2005
Good advice. Carrying a condom should not be seen as a sign of promiscuity: you're being smart and playing safe. If you're married, and you find yourself "playing" with another woman, at least protect yourself so you won't end up infect your wife with STDs such as HIV. Knowing how people can't hold their bodies these days, I support this idea.
ComputersRe: Computer Literacy and Uses of Computers by Seun(mod): 3:16pm On Nov 02, 2005
Hello Goodman, what a wonderful topic!

Nigerian youths these days are well aware that computers are important. The problem is that beyond desktop computing - MS Office, Coreldraw, Pagemaker, scanning and printing - the computers we have are not being fully utilized.

Businessmen and businesswomen have not really started to use PCs and computer networks to speed up their work, and the reason is simple: 'NEPA strikes' (unstable power supply). Our public power supply is so unreliable that small businessmen are reluctant to make their businesses depend on computers, because computers need electricity to run. If you have to use a generator, your costs go up which might drive up your prices. And besides, who says generators don't break down at inconvenient times?

There's little that can be done to improve computer literacy in Nigeria today - we just need reliable and affordable electricity and Internet access and an unrestricted private sector. When those things are available, then young people will be able to attend part-time computer coaching classes for the basics and go to the Internet to learn more advanced topics (like programming).

I learnt how to use computers in 1991 when the secondary school I was to enter organized a holiday coaching class, and escept for a period of 2.5 years at OAU-Ife, I've not looked back since then. I'm very confident using my computer, which I use primarily for maintaining and promoting this website and finding articles on the Internet.

Whenever my computer breaks down, I first of all identify the part that has gone down and then go to the Ikeja computer village to buy a new one, which I would fix myself. If something like a monitor or UPS gets spoilt, I just take it to computer village because I know that I'll find a competent electronics technician who can help me.

FamilyRe: Tell Us About Your Marriage by Seun(mod): 2:51pm On Nov 02, 2005
Hmmm ... I don't think remarrying is necessary at all, and especially not for your daughter's sake. If a handful of male relatives, teachers, married friends, et cetera can take special interest in your daughter, I believe that they can give her much of what she wants in a dad. It is not necessarily easy for a child to accept a "new father" who of course may not be perfect and will want his own "real children". (just wanted to express an opinion to balance dablessed's post; of course you know best).

Once again, AngelaZ, thanks for sharing!

adesodgi: I'm going to try that sometime *evil grin*

I remember when I was leaving home the first time and I thought I would be swimming in money in a few months. After 2 years or so, I noticed that I was exactly where I started except for a little more knowledge, and my goal became more modest: to make as much as a graduate's starting salary in a bank.

HealthRe: Stomach Ulcer: What is the effect? by Seun(mod): 11:44am On Nov 02, 2005
Jenny, it seems that the simple solution is for you to force yourself take food during your period irrespective of your appetite, so that those drugs wil not trigger your ulcer. Tell us why you're not doing that and maybe we'll be able to help? huh

I am 100% sure that your mum is right.

AngelaZ: In addition to what the others have said, I also want to add that you're also fortunate lady because what you had in a few years of marriage (loving husband, fruit of the womb) some people have been seeking and have not found for decades.

FamilyRe: Best Way to Punish Kids? by Seun(mod): 7:30pm On Nov 01, 2005
Children will definitely annoy you sometimes
When your children annoy you and you can't take it anymore, cover your face with a pillow and scream into it. Then you can go to your doctor and he'll prescribe some pills you can use to calm yourself down.

This new system of deal with irritability is also known as self control, and in my opinion it's much more humane than flogging and yelling.

Proper punishment is not what you do when you are annoyed; it's something you do to achieve a definite aim that betters the life of your child. It is best done when you're no longer annoyed.
FamilyRe: Best Way to Punish Kids? by Seun(mod): 7:15pm On Nov 01, 2005
In my opinion, flogging and yelling are almost the same thing. Yelling is verbal abuse while flogging is physical abuse. Some children are more resistant to abuse than others but why not be a caring, attentive, listening parent and not a yeller or flogger?
FamilyRe: Wife Beatings in Africa by Seun(mod): 7:10pm On Nov 01, 2005
It is the women who need help because they are the ones being beaten black and blue! Get it? The husbands are perfectly happy with their beating privileges and they have no problem as far as they are concerned. But why can't the women - who know what they are suffering - speak out, help each other, liberate themselves?

What public holiday? I'm lucky I bought extra phone vouchers this afternoon!
FamilyRe: Best Way to Punish Kids? by Seun(mod): 6:51pm On Nov 01, 2005
Yes. And I believe it's only justified if a child is caught in act of violence (such as hitting or pushing another child). There are some children that are beaten so regularly that they can no longer respond to any discipline that does not involve beating. Every morning when I wake up there's a child crying in the next house, and sounds of beating. That's violence. That's sad.

There are a thousand and one ways to discipline a small child without resorting to violence, and once this foundation is strongly built, the temptation to resort to beating diminishes as the child grows up. This approach can only be practiced by parents who have time for their children; parents who don't have time are in the habit of using the little time they spend with their children as cain time. And that is why, when they are old, their children are not interested in taking care of them. angry
ProgrammingRe: Programming - What About Newbies Like Me? by Seun(mod): 6:38pm On Nov 01, 2005
My recommendation, since you're primarily interested in website design and development: Learn HTML, PHP, MySQL, maybe Dreamweaver, and you'll be ready for some practical website design and development!

Some Useful Links:
- Introduction to HTML
- PHP Manual in English
- MySQL Reference Manuals
- Macromedia Dreamweaver
- Search Google for other free materials!

When I was younger, I used to pride myself in understanding C/C++/Java and one of my friends focussed on just PHP. Now he has become a guru in programming because he gets a lot of Jobs while I have had to start afresh in a different field. PHP and MySQL will make you productive, more than any other language.

April 1998 is when I started there. I was admitted into the Electrical and Electronics Department, and I studied for 3 sessions. I spent 2 glorious years at Fajuyi hall and one difficult year in PG hall, and until Nairaland came up things had gone downhill since then! grin

I know a lot of people who have passed through Great Ife on this forum, but none of them is particularly active.

Dorcas, obviously the bible is wrong in this case. Violence in the name of discipline is not good.
