Nairaland GeneralRe: Gender Inequality ("Men Always Like To Be Domineering") by Seun(mod): 2:54pm On Aug 16, 2005
In fact, whenever I hear a woman say that, it makes me think that there are serious inferiority complex issues at play here.
It is natural for a group of people who are treated as inferiors to develop inferiority complex.  Now that we have identified this inferiority complex in women in general, how do we fix it?

The answer is that only women can fix it. It is natural for members a group that is seen as being superior to do all they can to hold on to their "superior" status, so men as a group are not just going to wake up one day and start respecting women more.  If women feel they are not being respected enough, it is their responsibility to fight for their fair rights.  If our women are not ready to fight the fight, then they are not yet ready for equality; so for now they should go back to the kitchen where they belong!

We'll probably need information about your friend's qualifications and experience to be able to help out. His ability to speak 5 languages is irrelevant to most employers, and to practice as a lawyer I believe he'll need to go to the Nigerian Law School.

What's his reason for wanting to come to Nigeria?

TV/MoviesRe: Genevieve Nnaji for Hollywood? by Seun(mod): 6:58am On Aug 16, 2005
The main point of my last post is that hollywood actors are not responsible for the sophistication of hollywood movies. Did you get that? Actors all over the world are all the same - all they do is read the lines and follow the directions of the script; that's all. The only thing that's special about "top" actors is that, thanks to their fan following, they get the chance to work on the best films. This is simply because the producer knows that the mere presence of those actors in the movie will make it sell more.

Genevieve Nnaji doesn't get paid better than other actresses because she's more talented. She gets paid more because if I, Seun, am able to get her to act in my debut movie, people will buy it because of Genevieve's face on it. There's even a story that says that the reason Genevieve Nnaji became popular in the first place is because she was charging a low fee for appearance in each movie and acted in so many movies that she because ubiquitous. Yes, talent is helpful in acting but being in the right place at the right time can be even more helpful!

So the issue of Genevieve Nnaji making it in Hollywood is not about her talent; it's about her ability to give the hollywood movie producers the same confidence that she gives Nolywood producers, that "if I put this girl in my movie, it will most likely sell like hot cake". How many fans exactly does she have in the US? Are they concentrated in one place so the movie producer can earn from cinema showings? Even if she makes more than in Nigeria, will it be enough to survive in the expensive hollywood environment?
HealthHIV Drugs Manufactured in Nigeria (Virex Anti-retroviral) by Seun(mod): 10:04pm On Aug 15, 2005
President thumbs up locally-made ARV drugs

An indigenous pharmaceutical firm, Fidson Healthcare Limited, has presented President Olusegun Obasanjo with a set of locally manufactured Anti-Retroviral Drugs (ARV).

The drugs in tablets and liquid forms for adults and children respectively were 100 percent formulated and manufactured in Nigeria by Nigerians.

Chairman of the company Mr Fidelis Ayebae said at the presentation ceremony held at the State House Abuja on 12 August that since the entry of his company’s NAFDAC-approved brand of drugs into the Nigerian market, prices of ARVs had dropped drastically.

President Obasanjo in his response acknowledged that he was encouraged by the achievement of the Nigerian company having proved that "where there is a will, there is a way."

He urged the company to also seek the approval of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and break into the West African, regional and global drug markets.

The President assured the company of Federal Government’s patronage and also challenged it to achieve a breakthrough in malaria vaccine.

Nigerian Firm Makes Breakthrough in HIV Drug

An indigenous pharmaceutical company, Fidson Healthcare Limited, has made a breakthrough in the production of anti-retroviral drug for the management of Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immuned Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

The new drug, Virex Anti-retroviral, was approved by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) Thursday, prompting the company to go into full production of the drug.

Speaking to Vanguard at their Ikorodu Road, Lagos office, the marketing manager of the company, Mr Ijimakin Eboh Ola, said that the breakthrough in the production of anti-retroviral drug is just the beginning of many good things to come from the company.

He explained that the feat by Fidson Healthcare Ltd was the first of its kind in the whole of West Africa.

According to him, the journey for the production of the highly demanded drug started four years ago and the breakthrough came this year.

“We have one of the best research facilities in the industry and Virex anti retroviral drug is just the first and a lot of others will follow,” he said.

Continuing, he explained that there is no known cure for HIV/AIDs as all drugs available are aimed at bringing the viral load to the lowest level, adding that evidence has shown that Virex can do it.

The marketing manager, who stated that his company will continue to research towards finding a cure for the disease, explained that the only way to grow in the industry is through research.

“We are committed to research, which is a continuous thing in our company” he said.

On why they went into the research for HIV/AIDS anti-retroviral drugs, Mr Ola explained that three things brought them into it, which he describe as the three A’s (Affiordability, Availability and Accessibility).

According to him, though there could be other anti-retroviral drugs by multi-national pharmaceutical companies, yet they are not affordable, available and accessible to the over one million HIV carriers in the country.

He therefore said that Fidson Healthcare will ensure that all the three A’s problems faced by the patients are solved.

“Whatever this is in the market today, our brand will be better priced, and available” eh stated.

Virex according to him comes in five viriants including for children and adults and could prevent transmission of HIV from mother to child.

Christianity EtcFornication or Homosexuality, Which is a Greater Sin? by Seun(mod): 9:06pm On Aug 15, 2005
I notice that when we're talking about premarital sex, most of us are not religious. Men and boys just want to have sex, girls and women too. Unmarried boys and girls don't care what the bible says, they just want to sleep with each other. "Body no be wood" is their claim, and on Sunday they go back to church to ask for repentance. This practice of fornication doesn't generate much rage when it's discussed; it's as if "everybody understands".

But when the issue of homosexuality comes up, people become very angry and very pious. That is when they start quoting the bible to support their beliefs! The same people who have defended fornication, which is outrightly condemned in the bible, suddenly become righteous warriours! The girls and guys have no qualms about 'enjoying' each other before marriage, but they are ready to quote the same bible to condemn homosexuals.

So I asked myself a question, which of these vices is a more terrible sin and why do you think so? From the point of view of Christians, and from the point of view of Muslims too (I don't know much about islam, so forgive me for not giving a proper introduction from the islamic point of view)!

Tcherokee, I've said it before, what are maids for? My wife is likely to be too busy doing more important things to spend her time cooking and cleaning. One of the beautiful things about modern life is that almost everything can be outsourced - so you spend your time on what you love, and use the money you make from what you love to pay people to do what you'd rather not be doing. If mine can't clean and cook fine, let's see what else she can do!
TV/MoviesRe: Genevieve Nnaji for Hollywood? by Seun(mod): 5:58pm On Aug 15, 2005
Jacky Chan went on to make it in Hollywood partly because his Chinese films had already found their way to America. He was not a total unknown. Denzel coming to Nigeria might be successful, but only because we all know him already! Acting talent is not a big deal; it is definitely not a guarantee of stardom.

You see, the success of a star depends on a lot of factors one of which is luck. Once you've been fortunate to make it with one set of fans (e.g, for Genevieve, Nollywood fans) the idea of going to a complately different place to launch a new career is like asking for trouble. Talent is not everything that makes a star, so if you're fortunate to have achieved stardom don't abandon your fans thinking you can make new ones..

So I would not advice Genevieve Nnaji to abandon her numerous Nigerian fans and go to Hollywood where she's almost completely unknown. Ghana or South Africa would be better destinations, but you know their markets are not as large as the Nigerian (Nollywood) market! So there's no point in Genevieve Nnaji going to Hollywood. Let her stay here and make herself an even bigger star.

The fact that she could banned by the marketers association shows that she really needs to manage her career herself and have various avenues for reaching her fans. She's a popular star, but she would benefit from being powerful enough to be able to say "get out" to marketers who are unwilling to pay her asking fee!

No, Genevieve Nnaji would not make it in Hollywood, unless she is able to take her fans with her! Success in showbiz is about your ability to attract fans. Hollywood actors are not particularly sophisticated; all they do is act to script. That is what actors everywhere do. Actors have no impact on the quality of the story or the special effects used in a film, so talent cannot be the reason why Genevieve won't succeed in Hollywood.

As a Nigerian, I don't believe that she'll be able to get enough American or international fan following to make hollywood producers want to feature her in films as often as Nigerian producers do!

This is what they'll say, but if you make the mistake of following their advice, you'll be in deep trouble. If a woman really wants to know how good she looks let her go and post her picture on a picture rating website. RomanceYour Girlfriend Asks, "Honey, How Do I Look?" by Seun(mod): 10:21am On Aug 15, 2005
What do you do when a woman asks "how do I look" in one of various ways? For instance, after 4 hours with her hairdresser your woman returns with a hairstyle you absolutely hate and asks you "do you like it?". Or your 'urhobo' girl asks you "do you think I look fat in this dress?"

"Do you think I look fat in this dress?" When a woman asks you this, you're doomed. No matter what you say, it will be the wrong answer.

She already knows she looks fat or she wouldn't be asking you the question in the first place. But if you fib and tell her that she looks skinny, she knows it's not the truth -- and she'll punish you not only for lying to her, but also for noticing that she's been packing on the pounds [if you tell her the truth]. She might even break into tears because, "You don't love me for who I am." Either way, you can't win.

http://www.askmen.com/dating/curtsmith_100/122_dating_advice.html
Do I agree with this article excerpt? Yes, and no. I agree that telling a woman she's not looking beautiful is the fastest way to hell, but I disagree that lying to her will put a man in trouble. I am convinced that the right thing to do is to consistently tell her what she needs to hear.

You see, if a woman asks me about her looks, I know the right answer. The right answer is that she looks "just right". It doesn't matter if I'm about to vomit on the floor, I will never in my life admit that a lady-friend asking that sort of question doesn't look "absolutely perfect!" Even if you put a gun to my head I won't say such a thing! Even if she says, "I won't you to be honest with me" I won't make such a foolish mistake.

"Never, ever, tell a woman what you don't like about her looks. Instead, shift attention to the things you you like." is my rule. What's yours? What do you say when they ask these tricky questions?

The first thing that comes to my mind is that I want someone who believes in peace at home. At first I couldn't believe it, but some women actually belive in formenting trouble from time to time just to "make life interesting". Well I can't live with such a person. At my own home there must be continuous peace. No domestic abuse, no power struggle, no weekly or monthly or yearly fights - just peace round the click and all the time.

My second thought is that I want a woman that is a complete human being - with concrete dreams, ambitions, aspirations, goals. The ability to make decisions and take responsibility, the ability to acquire knowledge and be respected. I ability to explore progressive ideas, new cultures, new realms in life and get used to them. And the ability to share in really big dreams because I'm the biggest dreamer you've ever met - I need to know I'm not going to be pursuing my dreams alone!

Typing Skills: The Fashion of the Internet

The debate that screams across every active forum on the net; "y do3s it matt3r if I typ rite?" Every admin wishes there was some sort of international law that explained this already, sparing them the trouble of typing out the details to a person that in the end will only reply with: "but it sh0s mi p3s0nality!!1111111" Even the most patient will want to ram a sock down their throat and kick them out the front door. <sn>

One day while chatting with a forum member I was asked: "Why does it matter how they type, if you can understand them?" my response was simple (after a long hour lecturing where I ended up the only person left in chat...) - Typing is the only internet fashion. It shows your personality online just as the clothes you wear in person displays who you are.

Visualize a man walking down the street. He’s is wearing a dozen gold chains around his neck, a basketball jersey, and a fake gold tooth. Your first impression? That man is ghetto fabulous! Ah, but take away all his bling and you discover he’s a college graduate running a million dollar business. If he walked in to a job interview for a big cooperation like that he would never be hired. But hey, it shows his personality!

The way people type online is this same principal. 1337-speak, chat-speak, bad spelling, missing punctuation... all these things though “cute”, “fast”, or “cool” may not show your personality the true way you want to be displayed. Why is that? Because these things have been stereotyped as immature or uneducated, just like hoochie skirts and spandex on grandma. Sure its fast and easy when you want to message someone on AIM or text them on their phone, but when it comes to a forum community it just looks stupid!

1337 5p34k
Take 1337 for example. This is usually a normal sentence typed up with a bunch of numbers or symbols. For most people this is near impossible to understand! So, you want to be that guy on the forum that gets ignored because no one can read your text? It might be fun those silly nights you’re playing around, but on a regular basis, this is a big lightbulb to someone who just wants to be annoying.

Chat-Speak
Woe is the youngster who is too lazy to write whole sentences. Hey ev1! how r u doing? Great 2 be here! Do you really think you’re typing faster by skipping a few letters? No way! You’re just telling “ev1" you’re probably about 7 years old and you still haven’t learned how to write a big girl. Little kids replace words with letters because they don’t know how to spell the whole words... is that the impression you want to make?

Punctuation doesn’t mean being on time (dot dot dot)
wouldnt the world be kind of scary if when people typed they never used punctuation so every single sentence ran in to each other and you were never quite sure when a sentence ended or another began worse yet you couldnt tell what kind of tone theyre using because it all sounds kind of monotone in your head because people forget punctuation is how you differentiate between pauses questions and excitement. That was horrible, wasn’t it? Hey, we can sacrifice a capital letter here and there, but without those punctuation marks, trying to understand you becomes about as easy as holding your breath for ten minutes while someone tickles you with a feather duster.

I ain’t got no grammar!
So... many countries are forced to learn English as a second language just to be able to function in daily life, and you can’t even use it properly as a first? Good golly, you must be dumb! Sure, most people don’t use writing on a daily basis - but you’re on the internet now fella! People have got to be able to understand you. If you’re using words that don’t exist or your spelling is so bad it looks like a dyslexic monkey is doing the typing, there’s something wrong there! Be kind to your non-first-language speaking friends - people all over the world are using the internet! With English becoming that universal language, you gotta know how to use it!

You took away my personality, now how do I show I’m a unique individual?!
I’m sorry! No wait, I’m not! The wonders of the English language is a bountiful harvest of different words and meanings. Remember what I said about grammar? That’s your foundation! Throw in fun words or phrases like “somnolent” or “Why, something smells pretty odious around here...” and you’ll show just how fun, silly, elitist, smart, amazing, stupefying, anomalous, grotesque, witty, sexy, or even cantankerous as you truly are.

As you can see, the way a person types can show a lot about them. “Good evening, everyone, How do you like your buns baked?” might sound snooty (or dirty...) And “LOLOZ wuz^ ev1??1?11 u r here? A/s/l check!!!!11" might make you want to gouge out your eyes and quiver in fear. Your typing displays more about you than you realize, so put your best text forward and show the Internet what you’re made of!
