Nahh... I don't care to know, cos I care about my indigenous language

Nobody is telling you that you should not care about your tribe. w. Wi jus de Yan Yu seh Pidgin na Nigerdelta language of Unity. You cannot take it away from us it's now part of our evolving culture. You love your Yoruba we love our Pidgin even if you say it's bastardized English we still love it just because Its our language. and u say we speak it among people of the same ethnicity too that's just one of the side effect of it. to most of us it's our first language and first language is the language we react with think with so go figure.

really? Lagos ppl who don't speak Yoruba? U mean lagocians or Lagos indigins?

And did u say bayelsas n port Harcourt? Have u heard them speak at all? Lolz. grin....the intonation is all over

I didn't say everybody in Bayelsa though not the rural area just Yenagoa and you know Portharcourt people has the cleanest English Delta also has some intonations they all seem to have that Urhobo accent even if they not from the tribe or speak it. Maybe it's because you're from there and you've been hearing your fellow deltans speak for long so it's sstarting to feel normal. listen when they pronounce Sh and Ch sounds like Chop they pronounce it as Shop. that's Delta accent even Bayelsans too share that Shosh for church accent too. Most Bayelsans in the Southern most places where they speak Izon and Nembe you'd hear them saying SOS for Church. But for New born Yenagoans it's not like that although they sometimes say Jejus for Jesus but it's just a few people the ones that stays near or are Epie Attisa speakers. But really I tell you the Yenagoans who speak pidgin as a first language don't really have tribal intonations like me.

don't be deceived, this same delta is the only state u won't hear tribal intonations when its indigins speaks correct English.

U can't say same of the likes of hausas, Igbo's or Yorubas.

Did you know there was a pidgin English commentary on super sports all through the world cup? Pidgin English Is fast becoming part of our lingual franca here in Nigeria.

It's not the only state Portharcourt and Yenagoa also Lagos people who don't speak Yoruba too has that characteristic.

Pidgin ain't a proper language mate

Who says so? Tell me huh? First of all you think you know which is stupid because really you don't know. Second of all Goan research on Pidgins and creoles and linguistics thoroughly then come back to debate. As long as it has native speakers it's a language. You think languages just popped out of the air they constantly are born from a much more older language. Go to your History book read on Latin and vulgar Latin and the history of French Spanish Italian Portuguese and your dear English which is actually started of as a Corruption of Latin German Scandinavian French Greek etc.

Keep calm, I certainly wasn't shaming yorubas and nor was anyone else on the thread.

It is not Pidgin English alone that is eroding our indigenous languages. English language itself is slowly eroding our languages and yes even the Yoruba you
think is intact isn't very much intact because at the end of the day most yorubas cannot write in Yoruba language.

It's not that deep you know, it's just a language and nothing stays the same forever.

Let me further add and rock the boat even more:

Certain ethnic groups in Nigeria are noticing and worrying that their language is going exist. Why won't this happen when you shun ur language and favour pidgin English?

You want to laugh at Yorubas but they are having the last laugh. Because at the end of the day their language is intact

That list up there is shameful!

Weh Yu Wu e epp. Well come if you are Yoruba You and I should exchange life come and experience the south were every mile is a different language if you do not loose your language then I'll eat my head up. Shey you de hear me so!?

Culture / Identitying Naija Pidgin Accents And Dialects. by Sinistami(m): 12:56pm On Jul 20, 2018
Identitying Naija Pidgin Accents can be tricky based on that they have been no real study on them. That is a result of the stigma and belief that Nigerian Pidgin isn't a language but a bastardization of English which actually isn't completely true. B
one of the reasons people stigmatize it is because of its name Nigerian Pidgin English which I would say isn't accurate any longer. Wikipedia defines a pidgin as a Grammatically simplified means of communication that develops between two or more languages that has no similarities prior before they admixture . it is not classified as a language because it doesn't have Native speakers. the contact always includes a Substrate language or languages Eg Yoruba Igbo Edo Urhobo Ijaw Hausa etc which the language gets its grammar and syntax etc. And the Superstrate language Eg English which it's gets most of its lexicon from. But right now the language as its spoken doesn't go as the above definition says especially the Nigerdelta where the language has been creolized ie has turned into a creole. A creole as defined in Wikipedia goes like this A creole is a stable Natural language that developed from a mixture of different languages in a fairly sudden point in time. Most creoles developed from pidgins as the children of the pidgin speakers starts speaking it as a first language. Children naturally gives it it's own grammar and vocabulary and structure. in that sense it becomes independent from the parent Languages as the language is no longer used only for specific things it's now used for a wider scope of tasks.
I would classify Naija pidgin Accents and Dialects into two major groups Native and Non native accents and Dialects: Native accents are the accents that are spoken mostly by Native first language speakers Eg are Waffi Warri Dialects Baffi Benin Dialect, Saffi Sapele Dialects Pitakwa Portharcourt Dialects Yeniz Yenagoa Dialects You'd know a Native Accent when it's spoken in a place where the surrounding local languages are in Danger and in most cases the Accent won't show a tribal marker excluding those of Delta origin like Waffle and Saffi Dialects and even Baffi. Those of Portharcourt and Yenagoa don't really show tribal markers not that they don't have it it's very minimum. The other group the Non native ones include Calabar or Una dialects, Igbo pidgin accents Eg Onitsha variety, Ajegunle and other Lagos dialects (although this one is starting to have native speakers) Aboki Dialects (Not including the Sabon-Gari dialect. Sabon-Gari Dialects. These ones are mostly very much influenced by the tribal language of their environment by way of pronunciation and lots of tribal words in it.
A standard Dialect of the language is pretty much needed if the language is ever going to get an official status plus a name change is needed. The Naija Langwej akademi a linguistic group has already solved this by creating a standard orthography and changing the Name to Naij'a but they still need Government backing.

Pidgin is not a language. Pidgin is harmful to the indigenous languages. It’s almost like English first, pidgin second while indigenous languages are a distant third. Pidgin is a bastardized something. Let’s restore our indigenous languages to their rightful place. Even if English is first for reasons we cannot help, then indigenous languages should be 2nd.

Abegi Karri yo tok go siddon Fo corner ehh! Tell me which language isn't a bastardized form of an older language going by your views.Goan read on English History or goan tell me how the Edoid languages like Eshan Isoko Urhobo got so different from Edo. because the white man told you that t

Mine sound like W/L too...live with it. I have tried to get rid of it but nah

I have been living with it and it gets worse every passing year right now I can't even Pronounce R consciously without it turning to W or Not just even appearing at all. like pronouncing the word try would come out as twy or tai. it makes me sound like a baby plus I stammer a little. Unconsciously I switch the two making Wow sound like Row.

Recently I noticed that I replace them with each other R for w and vice versa. I knew my accent was Non Rhotic before but this this is ridiculous. And pls I dunno if this is the right section to post this but maybe you modes can help me move it.

I don't know Ojukwu, Zik, Awo, or any saduana. I wasn't born when they lived all I have of them is history and history is past, but my future I can decide.

However, I know my friends; Abdulahi ishajobi, Sule Mohammed, Morayo Banjoko, Temisola Adewale, and I can easily say these amongst others are the finest human beings I know and their tribes hasn't stopped them from being good nor doing good.
I share not in the sentiments of the present Nigeria, cos it shall not be said of me and my family, that " the fathers has eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth is set on edge ".

OP didn't do anything wrong all this tribal people sha they think America just woke up and became great. it took over a hundred years to achieve what it has now they've had so much more problems than what Nigeria is facing. imaging you going to an unknown land to settle and develop imagine the natives views of it all those problems coupled with the problems of the African Americans but they all got through it somehow.

About me and my tribe my city and my people

Iam ijaw from Bayelsa my hometown is Yenagoa. The clan/tribe am from is Zarama from my dads side they speak an Edoid language called Engenne. my Great Grandad is a Saro who settled in porthacourt and married my Great grandmum
he later settled in with her in the village my dad is half Igbo half Ijaw. while my mom is from the Epie-attisa clan they also speak an Edoid language called Epie.
I stay and live in Yenagoa or yentown as we call it
Yenagoa is a new somewhat small but expanding city. Yenagoa according to the news is a cult ravaged militant dwelling no good city. although I won't lie its a bit true but don't get fooled it's a good place. and like every other southern city you GATS use your head. Yenagoa is native to the Epie-Attisa the Gbarain-Ekpetiama the Zarama the Okodia the Busseni clans of the ijaw. they all speak different languages not dialect o different languages. This coupled with the ever increasing inflow of immigrants like the Igbo (Number one) Yoruba Urhobo Isoko Efik Igala Ibibio etc and other ijaws makes Yenagoa a pidgin speaking city. the average citizen of Yenagoa can't speak his tribes language only core pidgin. This characteristic it shares with its sister cities in the south. like PH Benin Warrior Sapele.

I love my people I love the south The Niger Delta I love Nigeria with all my heart. even if you Igbos and Yorubas don't want to be together don't spread your divisiveness to us the Nigerdelta we have lived together before Nigeria. so u can't tear us apart. even if we don't have a common language. we speak pidgin. OP karri go I full ground for you I tanda for your side no shakin.
