kenben: The hypocrisy here is coming from the speaker and all northern leaders who have refused to tell their people the truth but continue to hide under religion and ethnicity bigotry to manipulate their people. OR IS IT NOT THE SAME RELIGION THAT IS PRACTICED IN THE UAE? And what is the truth he has refused to tell his people? Tell us all sir. |

JAWBONE: There is no shifting goal posts. The girls are being married simply because they are orphans. If the speaker had relatives among those orphans, he would not allowed them to be married that way.
In Kano, their Hisbah commission married off some people months ago and nobody cared. This case looks more like an auction than a marriage Of course, you've shifted the goalposts. First, it was they were not consenting, now it is they are consenting because they were not given other options. As if women where you come from don't equally consent to marriage out of poverty. All this hypocrisy will take us nowhere. |

Politics › Re: Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye Withdraws Orphan-Marriage Suit Against Niger Assembly by SmartyPants(m): 1:36pm On May 17, 2024 |
JAWBONE: The girls consented to the marriage because that is the only option that was thrown in their face. That is not consent. 100 orphaned girls were individually interviewed and they all agreed to marriage because that is what the speaker told them they would do for them.
Were they given other options? I don't think so. Also have they met these men previously and discussed marriage with them? What about pre-marriage medical checkups? Are the men financially capable of marrying them? or would they just be auctioned off to the men on the day of marriage. What is the level of education of the girls? Many questions must be asked before you throw them into something as serious as marriage. The Speaker said he was marrying them off to alleviate their poverty. That is a very stupid reason to give. Their are many other ways to help them alleviate poverty All this shifting of goalposts by asking jamb questions makes no sense. These are adults, not kids. Adults make all sorts of decisions every day. Do you go to peoples' weddings to ask all those jamb questions?? The essence of being a consenting adult is that you are entitled to your own reasons for choosing marriage, whether as a poverty alleviation scheme as is common all over Nigeria, or for any other reason. Are they of full mental capacity? Did they consent? If yes, mind your business instead of inventing false reports. |
Politics › Re: Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye Withdraws Orphan-Marriage Suit Against Niger Assembly by SmartyPants(m): 1:12pm On May 17, 2024 |
JAWBONE: Let the girls speak for themselves. They are not commodities to be bought and sold. If they are adults already, it still doesn't mean they want to be married. Marriage is between two CONSENTING ADULTS.
Also their plights as orphans should not be the factor for their marriage. Throw them into homes where they would become glorified sex slaves and child bearing machines. If the girls do not have an education or a vocation, that should be paramount. Unless the girls themselves decide that marriage is all they want, they should be given the freedom to choose their path in life. I have clearly stated that the speaker said the girls consented to the marriages. It is not for you miles away to declare an alternate reality when you have no such facts. And that makes the minister's conduct all the more difficult to understand because if anyone is in a position to get the true facts, she is! Minna is a 2-hour drive from Abuja, so if she had sincere concerns, I would expect that she or members of her team would have been on the ground to satisfy themselves that the whole episode is being conducted in line with the principles of human rights enshrined in our Constitution. Having failed to do so, she had absolutely no reason for filing her suit and you have absolutely no reason to allege that there is a lack of consent involved in the marriages. |

Tonitoniton: Did u hear from any one of them urself or just speculations? The speaker has come out to clarify the situation. I wonder, by the way, whether you heard from any of the ladies before you swallowed the initial story hook line and sinker. Did you? Even the original report did not as much as quote any of the girls, which is just the basics of good journalism. So how did you believe them? Learn to be fair and reasonable. |

Beats the imagination how a whole minister could initiate a suit against a State assembly and even petition the police based on a media report. Could she not have reached out directly to the persons on the other side to get information first?
This whole thing underscores the sorry state of journalism in Nigeria. Report first, verify later. Sad! |

I have never understood why on earth Bendel was balkanised. That State was a true bastion of progress in everything from sports to the economy. If Nigeria were to break up, a return to Bendel would rapidly see that new nation progress exponentially. |

The type of encouragement, Buhari advanced for his normadic kinsman, give youth land, plough it and give them seedlings and chemicals, they will deliver. Youth should also see sense in agbado and cassava as the way forward. Mbanda: But you are here supporting what the military did in okuama somehow. I'm not supporting it at all. I'm saying that people should not use Okuama as an example of the military being more brutal in the South than in the North. The military is generally brutal and this is wrong every time. So many atrocities have been committed in the north. |

Mbanda: The bandits ( as you put it) are from where?
Ok, what of in SE where unknown gun men will come from nowhere and kill army. The next thing that will happen is the military going to the village and it's surroundings (where the killing of the soldiers took place) and start killing people in hundreds and raising houses and shops down. And you people will be on nairaland, Twitter and other social media platforms cheering the army for killing the innocent.
Now the same thing has happened in the north and your here shifting the goal post. Is that not hypocrisy and double standard? Kindly show me where I did such. Why are you accusing me falsely? |

Mbanda: The terror gang that killed the military in kaduna is from where? If you said Okuama youths were the ones that killed the military, isn't it obvious that, it was kaduna youths that killed those military men. Don't be ridiculous. 1. The Okuama crisis was two communities at war. This is what led to the angle of the soldiers being attacked by members of one particular community. 2. In this particular case, we are dealing with local communities being attacked by bandits (Fulani militias) whereas the army is there to protect these communities. These are totally different scenarios, and you obviously know it but you want to prove a point. |

Make una keep shifting the goal post, and after doing that una shout "one Nigeria". Who were the killers of the soldiers if not the Okuama youths? And does that mean the army was right to raze down the community? Obviously not! Principles are principles regardless of North, South, East or West. |

Drop this argument because defending military strategies and operations this context makes you look dumb.
In fact, remove Smarty from your moniker and keep only Pants because there's nothing smart about the person behind this moniker You've never come across as having anything meaningful to say so who cares what you think? However, I will grace you with a limited reply: 1. The idea that the military behaves differently in the South from the North is provable nonsense. 2. I did not defend any military "strategy and operation". Do you lack comprehension? I simply said the contexts are different so the person I quoted should not make such ridiculous comparisons. |

OkpaNsukkaisBae: stop shifting the goalpost. Answer the damn question. There is no goalpost. I am not engaging in a conversation with that person. The answer to the question is staring you in the face as obviously the persons who attacked the military in Delta were youths from the community, whereas in the present instance we are talking about terrorists who largely do not even come from Nigeria, and have no known communities. In fact, as a reading of the write up should show, they are instead attacking local communities. |
