When you go for employment in another state in your own country and you are told you cannot be employed because you are not an indigene, or you are called derogatory names because of your tribe (afonja, ipobyouth, nyamiri, ofe mmanu, ndi mmong, mallam/aboki in the derogatory sense etc), is that not worse than any racism you will experience anywhere else?

Even Nairaland has bots which convert these derogatory words into the tribes being referred to.

My sister,
In agric, there is what we call initial investment. If you look closely at your startup analysis, some of the items like planter will not be bought again for the next planting, you just have to write them off in bits. You cannot add this in chunk to your books.

Meanwhile, as a newbie in the business, I assure you that you will find a lot of achievements doing some of the things that will cost you money by yourself (maybe with family members), just do the less stressful things. Finally get a comparison for your quotes as some of the items on your list are on high side.

Hope you find this helpful
What exactly is your point here? Do you expect cost of land lease to be the same all over the country? Or you are contesting the price of the maize seeds bought from the company warehouse of Premier Seeds? Or you expect the cost of chemicals to be the same all over the country?

Finally, you expect me with three businesses I run to leave them all to carry my "family members" (who are also workers and business owners with their own families) to go to the farm to do the work myself? In an attempt to save how much?

Some of you just write like kindergarten kids.

grandstar:
Why cant Nigerians pay the market price for petrol like other countries in West Africa? Are Nigerians going to die.

Countries far poorer than Nigeria are paying the market price.

Subsidies like this damage the sector and discourage investments. I am very sure Dangote is slowing down construction until a government ready to deregulate the price of petrol like they did diesel comes on board.

Look at Singapore and Malaysia.

Singapore is the most densely populated country in the world. It is a city state, that means a city makes the country. It has about 5million people and has virtualy no natural resource apart from 20,000 per day oil production.

Malaysia from which it broke out from has about 20m people, vast amounts of land and natural resources and oil

Singapore has no subsidies whatsoever. Yet from 1964, it has moved from being has poor as Nigeria but now has a higher per capita income than Britain. It's per capita was $52600.60

Malaysia has lots of subsidies even on petrol. It also some foodstuffs.

Today, however, despite it's natural advantage over Singapore, it per capita income per person is only $11028.20

This is about a fifth of Singapore.

Most subsidies are wasteful and not even necessary in the first place. Once established, this subsidies are considered a birthright not withstanding the massive holes creates in the budget. The present subsidy will cost 700billion in a years times. This is a government that is already borrowing heavily.

Energy subsidies cost some Arab countries as much as 5% of GDP.
Flawed argument!

What is the minimum wage in all the countries mentioned, compared to a measly $50 a month in Nigeria? in Ghana they pay the equivalent of N360 per litre on PMS and diesel, but ask average Ghanaians when last they ever started a generator to provide power to their houses. Their fuel is for their cars and cars only! So what they pay as cost per litre, they save in consumption.

Here in Nigeria, we pay for fuel for cars and generators (house and office/shop). All on a minimum wage of $50! Fifty dratted bucks that cannot even pay for hotel per night in Abuja!

Opinionated:
By I.A Katagum

What’s all this hue and cry about the insinuated increase in the pump price of the petroleum motor spirit. Don’t tell me you have not seen it coming right from the day you advocated for the total removal of subsidy on the product!

By the way, seems like most us back then, were just shouting ‘remove subsidy’ ignorantly without actually having a grasp of what the removal entails. Only that can explain some folk’s resolve to come back here and start singing direct opposite of what they sang earlier. (we can not buy fuel above N145/ltr).

The last time I checked, removal of subsidy on a particular commodity will mean the same thing as allowing market forces, notably those of demand and supply to determine the price of that commodity. By that singular act of removing subsidy on petroleum products, the pump price of these products has become vulnerable to changes in the cost of production.

Just like the way increase in the cost of production of rice will cause a proportionate increase in the market price of rice, same phenomenon will also apply to unsubsidized PMS.

Lest I forget, a barrel of crude oil was selling below $30 when the subsidy was first removed, and that was why we were able to buy fuel at a reasonable pump price of N145/Ltr.

Now that the the price of crude oil in the international market has rocketed to about $60/barrel, common sense should be able to tell you that the pump price of N145/ltr is not longer feasible, else the marketers will be running at loss. Without subsidy, there is no way the pump price of petroleum will remain stable. It will always change to reflect prevailing realities.

As it stands now, the government has got only two options. One of the options, frequently adjusting the price to account for any increase or decrease in the cost of production seems not going to be popular with a good number of the populace. And to suddenly make a U-turn and reintroduce subsidy either directly or indirectly will not speak well of the policies of this government.

Personally, I’m not a fan of subsidy. Even when people took to the streets in 2011 to protest the culmination of the subsidy regime by the Jonathan government, my position was clear.

It’s high time the government takes the bull by the horn and make a decisive move to end this menace once and for all.

source:
http://www.opinions.ng/really-want-subsidy-regime-back/
All this big grammar does not address the question: WAS SUBSIDY EVER REMOVED? The answer is a resounding NO!

What govt simply did was to readjust the price of petrol according to the price of the US Dollar against the Naira. Since you now needed more Naira to buy one dollar, it simply made sense to readjust the price of petrol to suit the reality.

Now that crude oil prices have almost doubled since the last price increase of petrol, the government is now in a fix. They deceived Nigerians into thinking that subsidy had been removed, when in fact, no subsidy was removed. They cannot change prices now in a pre-election year, as that will be a one-way ticket to being voted out of power.

Removal of subsidy = total deregulation of the pricing regime, which means that prices cannot be the same from one station to another, and you cannot get the same price of PMS day in day out as costs change daily.

What we had was an exchange-rate mediated price increase and not a removal of subsidy.

Honestly you hit the nail on the head. The hand planter is a machine that can easily be crafted locally. It has a very simple design. But the government will prefer contracts to be awarded for the supply of these stuff. They are then displayed for the media: "govt delivers 1,00 planters to farmers..." is what you will see. Then a member of the government will buy them off and resell at a profit.

In September of last year, I contracted someone (bashman, right here on nairaland) to plant maize and cassava on two acres. The cassava should be ready for harvest by August, 2018. By February, 2018 (next month), the maize should be ready for harvest. However, my resolve is to henceforth oversee the cultivation by myself because I believe I am likely to get better results since I will be putting in my 100%.

I have decided to concentrate on maize farming because of the shorter time it takes compared to cassava. I have done (and I am still doing) a lot of research on maize cultivation. The estimated planting date is March 15, 2018. Rain forecast could alter this but hopefully not beyond two weeks from this date.

Now, straight to business:
The plan is to plant 3 to 5 acres of maize.
I have ordered for a manual push planter and a hand-cranked corn thresher from China. I consulted goodsexpress.com to do that for me. I paid on Jan 1, 2018 and the expected delivery date is Jan 16 – Jan, 23, 2018.

I have been speaking to a number of people who can help me get access to land which I could lease.
I have also found leads to a few places where I could purchase fertilizers at a reasonable cost.

Here’s the math (for 2.5 acres, rough estimates only):

Land lease = N10,000
Land clearing = N20,000
Ploughing = N20,000
Harrowing = N20,000
Cost of seeds = N50,000
Planting cost = 0
Fertilizers = N130,000
Fertilizer application = 0
Herbicides = N7,000
Insecticides = N5,000
Spraying cost = 0
TOTAL = N262,000

The planting, the fertilizer application and the spraying costs are N0.00 because I will be carrying it out by myself. I am doing it because those are three critical operations that I do not think I can trust any operator to carry out as efficiently as I require.

If I have access to more land, I will pay operators to help plant on the extra land. It is only 2.5 acres (1 hectare) that I want to cultivate by myself.

PS: my farmer friend just told me this evening that farmers have started land clearing. This kinda means I'm lagging behind somehow; I've not even got the land I want to use yet! embarassed
Not to worry. They are simply using fire to burn off the dried weeds and shrubs, taking advantage of the harmattan. But weather patterns are changing. Rain fell in Abuja and environs on December 16 or thereabout. This has never happened in the last 15 years or so. Usually the rains cease here in October/November, never to fall again till April the following year.

In any case, get your land quick and start work. Also pay attention to NIMET rain forecasts. They have been very accurate with the rainfall patterns since I started to follow them a few years back. It will help you plan.

how many bags of fertilizers cost 130k huhdo u depend on rainfall study weather forecast 1st ooo!
Presently, government's NPK mix(20:10:10) is N5,500 per bag. Urea is between N7,500 and N8,000 per bag. There is also this company in Lagos that sells organic fertilizer that they make from waste collected all around Lagos. It also goes for N5,500 per bag but apparently, you will need a lot of it to plant on 1 hectare when compared with NPK/Urea.

Concerning the hand planter, your shipping company will charge you money for shipping from China and customs duty. This is where the bulk of the cost is. This makes it uneconomical to buy one planter. It is usually best if there are three of you, to pool money together and ship via normal shipping (not express) so your costs collectively come down. You should then be able to get the machine at a total cost of N50,000, which is N15,000 less than current market price in Nigeria. This is still good: N15,000 can buy you 2 bags of urea or close to 3 bags of NPK. It can also buy you up to 8 bags of chicken manure.

So for those doing agric as a business, you need to consider such options to save cost.
