iamblisz: Congratulations. Good to see that you actual score is better than the practice test. My first practice test was 296: Q 150 V 146. Since then I've been unable to get pass that score. 2nd practice test worse : Q 146 V 141.
I told myself I wont write until I score at least 310 in the practice test, and this is my 4 month of preparation. Thank you! Use the 5lb Manhattan book and tackle those topics that you find difficult. |

So I wrote the GRE last week Monday. Quantitative : 153 Verbal : 155 AWA : 4.0 I prepared for the exam within 2 months, 95% of my studying was on the quant section with 5lb Manhattan book. I hardly studied for the verbal. The only verbal stuff I studied was the 101 word list on crunchprep (which was helpful) I did not practise the AWA, not even once. I just read some sample and scored essays on the ets site. You can look them up. Advice : When studying the quant section, especially if you're using 5lb Manhattan book, study these topics well because they are the most frequent : Word problems. Two variable word problems. Geometry (esp angles). Ratios, percents and fractions . Algebra. Inequalities and absolute values.Data interpretation (they too love this section) Improve your vocabulary for the verbal. Its materials are the easiest to get since you can just google "Frequent gre words" and many results will come out. Also take the practice test! So you can get used to reading their comprehensions and keeping your focus. This is an arduous task. For the AWA, read samples from ets official site. The samples are scored and analyzed for you. Also practice writing essays quickly. The best way to get the 'feel' of the actual exam is by taking practice tests. When taking practice tests, please for your sake, DO NOT GUESS. Any questions you are not sure of, just leave them blank. This is because you might get lucky with your guesses and overestimate your potentials or progress. But on exam day, you might not be so lucky with the guesses. The answers to all questions on the practice test can be found on Google. So use that to correct yourself. My first practice test : Q 147 V 148 2nd practice test : Q 150 V 149 On test day I realized that the quant section exam was more difficult than the practice tests. I was very disappointed because I used almost all my time to prepare for it while I ignored other sections. I ended up guessing on about 13 quant questions within the three sections that I wrote on it. Not because I couldn't solve them, but because they were taking so long and I ran out of time each time. So learn to solve those questions quickly. I finished the verbal sections, usually with 9 minutes or more left. I trusted myself on the AWA because I am good at writing, but the time is barely enough so I had to conclude all my essays prematurely. I would have done better if I had practised it. Some tips : Try to keep your calm, don't panic. My panicking made me unable to solve the first 2 quant questions that I saw. I later went back to them and solved them easily. Ignore the questions that are too difficult for you and go back to them later, Do not leave any questions blank, guess on the ones you do not know, Read the comprehensions very carefully before answering. Conclusion : The GRE is not an easy exam, it's quite exhausting both to prepare for and to write. So start preparing as soon as you can. The 5lb Manhattan was the only book I prepared with. But there are many other helpful books out there. If you know how to download with torrent, you can easily find these books on 'pirate bay' . Study like mad. You do not want to write this draining exam twice. Good luck! |

thesoj: An eight-page SOP is just too long and the VO probably didn't read it, or got confused reading it. In my view, the only way a VO would read such a lengthy SOP is (a) you have a concise TL DR on the first page OR (b) your writing is like Chimamanda prose.
An eight-page SOP is a sign to the VO that you have not yet figured out your reasons for wanting to study in Canada. This legend. I have read all your posts on this thread years back, along with Frankrobbn1. Welcome back! |

AccessME: Someone told me to focus on going to another good country instead of canada due to reason that their visa process is too stressful and tedious hence they do verification than any other country but i never believed the guy but seeing that this part 16 has got to page 7 and no one has shared visa approval testimony so far, unlike the new US student visa thread where 4 testimonies have been shared already in just 9 pages. i'm now beginning to see reason with what that guy told me. Of course, it shouldn't come as a surprise that US admits more international students per year than Canada. Each country is only going to admit international students according to a certain percentage of their population. (So there won't be more international students than local students). So let's say US admits 0.3 % of their population as international students and Canada does the same, US will end up having roughly a million international students while Canada will have 100,000. (Their population is just one tenth of Americas). But last I checked the actual figures, US had roughly a million and Canada had about 300,000. Which means Canada actually admits more according to their population percentage but US admits more by general figures/in total. |

Bracha: What some people who have jobs do is this, they get a letter from their place of work asking them for an official copy of their transcript. They then use the transcript when the school sends it to their place of work. I'll do this, thanks |

Somalian360: It's normal. Unofficial transcript in most schools MUST be collected in person; either by you or someone you know. Whoever you choose to help you can then send it to you through courier or any means.
N/B: I assume it's a Nigerian University you finished from... send someone that is street smart, money must change hands to boost the process. Thanks but I went myself and they refused to give me the un -official copy. I'll just request the official one sent to a place I can pick it up, as advised. |

probably what I'll do. Thanks all Deane: Some schools do not send transcripts to students or individual addresses whether official or unofficial. However, i know that they won't hesitate to send it to any corporate body/organization with an official address. So, Apply for the transcript to be sent to an official organisation, probably your work place or any office where you have access to and are sure it will be handed to you when received. When it is delivered, you can get it and use it for whatever you wish. bennyg24: Most schools in Nigeria issue the unofficial transcript popularly called Student Copy. Tell them you will be using it to apply for postgraduate program and it will be issued to you after some weeks. Student/unofficial transcript is issued to the applicant or someone sent by you. |
