First, I noticed is that many of these anti-Nigerians are the first to build or buy houses but they won't tell you. I was in Abuja and was shocked that a friend in my city who claims he'll never develop a property in Nigeria is developing a 100M personal property. His younger brother told me and my friend is not aware that I know about his property.

Who do you think owns many of the AirBnB homes in Lagos?
Who do you think owns the estates and mansions built in cities and villages.
Who do you think is developing the real estate sectors in many of the big cities? From Lagos to Ogun to Benin to Delta to Anambra.

In Ikoyi alone there are over 10 flats that I know people financing and we live in the same city. In over a decade of living oversees, I have meet thousands of Nigerians and only a few are not interested in owing personal houses.

Don't let anyone deceive, search the internet and you'll understand why Lagos/Abj is a good investment for real estate. The major problem investors face is Government/community encumbrances.

Find out about the REITS yield in Nigeria. Some have offered yields of 10% or more.

I paid for Devops course one time but too tired from work to even continue, kind of regret it but will still go back in the future. As one grows older, paying for courses or resources will be easy but finding time is extremely hard. Paid for so many courses on Udemy that I left hanging.

You're right. The more important a tech skill, the more companies are willing to pay a hefty premium for those who’ve mastered it; but when enough people master it, companies no longer need to pay that premium, since there’s sufficient supply. Economics is always a factor.

1. Only Canadian citizens and Mexican citizens can apply for TN visa while anybody all over the world can apply for H1B visa.
2. TN visa does NOT need employer sponsorship while H1B needs employer sponsorship. For TN visa, all you need is a valid employment. You don’t need to be in the US to get the job. People get qualified US job while still in Canada.
3. There is quota on the number of HB1 visa issued annually while there is no quota on the number of TN visa issued annually.
4. TN visa is limited to certain professions while HB1 visa is not.
5. TN visa can be obtained immediately at a U.S. port of entry/airport with your letter of employment on the day you are leaving for the US. On the other hand, H1B visa can only be obtained by filing a petition with USCIS which can take several months.
6. TN visa does NOT allow for dual intent while HB1 visa allows for dual intent. Meaning, applicant can intend to be nonimmigrants and eventually leave the U.S. while also intending to stay permanently.
7. Both the TN visa and the H1B visa can be issued in increments of 1 day to 3 years per stay
8. TN visa can be renewed unlimited amount of times while the H1B visa is generally limited to 6 years.

My take is, if you get a qualified job as a Canadian, then TN visa is very easy to get (note that I did not say that the visa is guaranteed).
About Mexican flooding the US boarder instead of applying for TN visa, my guess is that those flooding the boarder do not have the education requirement to qualify for TN visa and they are also not in the professions that qualify for TN visa. Note that most profession (I did not say all) that requires a Bachelor’s degree qualify for TN visa.

In my view, the reasons some Canadian are applying for H1B visa instead of TN visa could be because those applying for H1B visa do not have the education requirement to qualify for TN visa and they are also not in the professions that qualify for TN visa. In addition to that, they may also prefer H1B because of the dual intent explained above that H1B visa allows for but TN visa does not allow for.

The programming sector for women is still understaffed & many companies want a mixture of men & women. So far in my experience, every team i worked usually has just 1 or 2 women that are programmers. In my last company of about 50 devs, we had 2 women & 2 of them were Tech Leads and from America.

Programming is hard o, I can't lie and that's why some babes run from it but the ones who stay move up really quick because nobody is there to compete with you, men aren't really the competition because there are slots for men and women differently.

Diversity hires are taken very seriously in some companies.

You're right. We need more women in the IT space. Those who persevere rise. I encourage women to enter the IT field, it fosters a more diverse, innovative, and inclusive industry while providing them with rewarding and financially promising career opportunities.

You are interpreting the article as is which is okay but as someone on ground I'm now telling you there is more to it.

First of all, immigration to the west is a 3rd world adventure. Citizens of first world countries hardly migrate. You hardly see someone from say Finland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Japan, western Europe etc migrating to North America. Why would they do that when the standard of living in those countries are even better than ones in Canada or the US.

So who are those leaving? Is it the common man who migrated from India,China,Philippines,Pakistan,Nigeria etc? So they are going back to their country because all of a sudden, their country is now better than Canada? Why did they leave their country in the first place? Do you see Nigerians trooping back to Nigeria from Canada or are we not part of the newcomers?

I'm not saying people don't leave but not in any way like this article is trying to paint it. See, the opposition party has been critical of the current government immigration policy and has branded it a failure and they have a point. So it is not uncommon for someone who is angry with the government to push that narrative cos it is indirectly calling the government who is responsible for immigration a failure.

So why have you not applied yourself? Are you a Tech worker, Nurse or Accountant. I worked with many Canadian workers so I get first hand info from them, many of them were on H1B. In-demand jobs will bring anyone easily to the US. 5 years ago the company I worked with brought in 3 Nigerians straight from Nigeria with ease and that's just one company. Even this year I know a company that have brought in Nigerian applicants. 2 years ago Amazon was scouting for Nigeria professionals in some tech professions and it was difficult finding the right applicants. So if you're in-demand, companies will bear the burden of bringing you in.

That's not how it works. With a job offer you can't just apply at the border. It's obvious you don't know the process involved. Do you know that Canada is in the top 3 countries for H1B applicants in the US?

Once you can stay for 3 years, you can as well remain there for years. The longer you stay in a place, the more settled you become. It's not easy just moving from Canada to the US, Singapore or Dubai except it's the same company.

Moving out of Canada to where? This should be the question. Immigrants are moving out of Canada but not back to the shithole or third world country they came from.

They are moving mostly to the US and the reason is obvious. You make more money in the US than Canada and the cost of living is slightly lower in the US than Canada. So once they get the Canadian passport which allows them to work in the US, they move to the US to earn better money. So Canada is losing a lot of talents to the US and unfortunately for Canada they can't compete with the US.

In my own circle of Nigerian professionals, 5 people I know have relocated to the US from Canada to get better money. I have been tempted to move to the US lately. In fact, 2 weeks ago, I turned down an offer to move at the dieing minute as my liver failed me. The reason why I don't want to live in the US is due to gun violence and their toxic politics in the age of Trump otherwise I would have joined that movement. I prefer Canada due to those reasons.

So when they say immigrants are leaving, they are leaving to the US using their Canadian citizenship. Canada bothering the US is both good and bad for them. The good thing is that because of trade with the US, they are 8th world largest economy despite being a country of 39million people but the bad thing is that Canadian citizens being able to work in the US means they will continue to lose talents to the US as the US presents a better option economically for immigrants

You're wrong. That piece which originally was from Bloomberg yesterday was talking about Newcomers.
"New research suggests more newcomers to Canada have chosen to leave in recent years" Newcomers cannot move to US. It's even difficult to get an appointment from US embassy in Canada compared to Nigeria and it has been so for many years. Maybe you didn't read the piece but the theory is that what they expected was different from what they saw.

For the professionals, that is well known that Canadian citizens move to the US for more remuneration, less taxes and better healthcare.

Unfortunately we love buzz words and tech jargons. Nothing has changed in analog transmission technology since the 1800's and wireless telephony since the 1960's. All that's happening is DSP, compression algorithms, Wideband optimization, multiplexing, security updates and now AI integration. Major audio improvements are on the speaker side of devices.

Facetime I believe uses G729 codec, a high definition codec, which requires a certain level of data strength and reliability to work. It uses more data and bandwidth for it to work. Whatsapp on the other hand uses G711 or opus codec which can work even on the most useless of connections. So whatsapp is targeting a wider user base whereas Facetime is designed for mostly developed countries that have good and reliable data. Both of them can use the same high bandwidth codec but whatsapp with a lower codec is able to cater to a wider range of internet connection

Thanks for those technical details. These are some of the underpinnings of tech that most people don't know. Even if they use the same codec the compression is different. WhatsApp compresses all videos before sending them. It was designed to optimize the user experience based on bandwidth. If that wasn't done it won't be as widespread as it is especially in developing lands. There's a cost for everything.

Some reasons:

1. Good build quality: You can feel the quality just by holding an iPhone in your hand.
2. Second hand value: For whatever reason, iPhones tend to hold value more than competing brands.
3. iOS: This is debatable but IOS in my opinion is much smoother and more efficient than android. The user interface and experience is very good and is standardized.
There are fewer phones to support so it’s easier for app developers to make their iOS versions as excellent as possible.
4. Longevity: apple continues to release iOS updates for its older iPhones for a good number of years (5 to 6). Androids I had in the past released updates for a year or two and stopped.
This is very important for security as vulnerabilities are patched frequently. It’s no surprise that you find android phones infected with malware that pops up unsolicited adverts without recourse for the user.
5. Cameras: nothing to say here, cameras are decent.
6. Apple ecosystem: A major part of why Apple is successful is how well their various devices play together. Some examples: you can use your iPhone as a webcam on your Mac seamlessly, you can use your iPad as a second screen for your Mac, you can easily and automatically switch your AirPods between all your Apple devices (Mac, iPhone , Apple TV etc).
7. Security: if your phone is stolen/misplaced, you’re almost guaranteed that your data is safe (say you have nudes on the phone). Most of the time the phone can only be sold for parts as it’s difficult or impossible to break iCloud lock.
Even now, it seems the phone is completely useless as Apple has started to digitally sign parts and their permission is required before they can be used as spare parts in other devices.

These are my personal reasons. It’s easy to stay back and think yourself so smart for not using one but my advice is to first use an iPhone before forming an opinion. Same with macs and other Apple devices.

For the replacement parts, it's more of a business decision than a security feature. 3rd party replacement parts works fine and you can use parts from other Iphones. Apple is just making repairability unnecessarily difficult that's why they have one of the lowest repairability score. It doesn't make sense that I must source my parts from Apple when there are better alternatives. It doesn't make sense that you should require "Apple approval" to fix your phone. Some manufacturers have been doing that foe long by the way.

As an ex-manager who has filed employment-based petitions, please be prepared. The H-1B1 follows the same requirements as the H-1B but is not a dual intent visa and has a shorter employment period. From a managerial perspective, there are reasons while I would prefer a H-1B candidate but that’s my opinion and I created a thread some time ago for managers in US/UK/Canada to give insights on work place issues that could benefit potential migrants but one of the guys I contacted was not interested because according to him it's on this platform, you’ll see someone who has never left Aba arguing with a world traveler on how on to travel the world. Threads are always derailed, and many people think experience can be bought from the internet alone. If a HM has interest in you, he would do everything to bring you on board irrespective of where you are.

On your professional profiles, avoid contentious issues, engage with companies you’ll like to work with and showcase your unique abilities. On your journey, explore your community, visit safe places, and enjoy life.

Always remember that everything will be Ok at the end, if it’s not Ok, it’s not the end.

Alot of people are not paying taxes abroad too. They incorporate a company and charge expenses to it and pay little or no tax.

Commingling. No one want to pay taxes but they want good infrastructure.

I generally don't give advice on travelling out but my 2 pence is this.
UK is going thru economic meltdown at the moment. So things a expensive and hard. But there are still jobs and opportunities.
U have to work hard and be smart to achieve breakthrough.
Pls focus on IT, go for certification in IT courses eg project management. IT is a great economic cushion in this period. Your wife can go into coding since she has computer science background. She can easily earn 400 pounds a day in that field.
Finally, not everything Sukkot said is wrong, don't come here thinking u will be able to build house in maitama or banana island. Don't come here thinking of becoming a billionaire that will be throwing money around in naija. If that's your intention pls don't come.

Just as there are mediocre American public schools, there are literally thousands of high performing public and charter schools in America and while I’m sure Nigeria has good schools, why would parents living in America send their children back to Nigeria to attend elementary, middle, and high school?

Why was Charter schools created in the US when there were thousands of public and private schools. Without delving into the history of public schools over the years, I can summarize it as "to improve student learning" and the public schools were inadequate.

As expected there are good public schools, but that has diminished over the years and the govt is now trying to give it attention.

As for parents sending their children to Nigeria, I can only assume they feel they will get better education at that level comparatively. Otherwise I don't see any reasons why many private schools have foreigners in good numbers. After their secondary education they leave the country for higher education.

The UK has far better standard. For some of my nieces and nephews, they returned to Nigeria for their secondary education and came back for university education.

I agree with you. There's dignity in labor and no one should be undignified as a result of menial jobs.
However that report is an outliner. Besides 100k earnings is worth about 35k in NY when adjusted for cost of living. These are important considerations when dishing out figures.

I don't think one can afford private school based on those figures. Many private schools goes for about 2k and more there's one I know of that costs 5k a month.

Your calculations about ‘bills’ are also way off and if you know single people in this country earning $6500 who are struggling, they either have a drug or gambling problem, they’re living way beyond their means, they’re lying, or they don’t exist.

I don't know why I find this extremely funny. Where is basic education not free in the world?

The other part also has some assumptions when I was working, my rent was 4k plus excluding utilities, I don't do drugs or gamble or live above my means. I know very many single people who will struggle on 7k+.
