Tonye and Gloria were university sweethearts who both graduated from the same popular university in the South-south part of Nigeria exactly 10 and 9years ago respectively. After graduation and youth service Tonye was unable to get a job despite his very good grades in an engineering degree for years; Gloria on the other hand was lucky to serve in a good oil servicing firm which retained her and offered her an excellent package despite her barely average degree grade. Tonye, who started a small recharge card and GSM business on the side was just able to get by while job hunting for a professional job while Gloria excelled in her area and was sponsored abroad to the UK for a Masters degree. Their love still stayed strong hoping that things would get better. On her return a year later Gloria now had 5years experience, an MSc degree from the UK, a mouth-watering six figure monthly salary, a very tasteful apartment in an exclusive area of Lagos state and a brand new car, while Tonye who still depended on okadas and busses, made circa N20,000 a month and shared a scanty old flat with three other guys in an interior part of Lagos. Despite this and after much cajoling due to Gloria’s anxiety of possible results of delay Tonye decided to get married to Gloria and move in to her house while he looked for ways to start a more lucrative and befitting business. One and a half years later Gloria who had earlier changed to a senior Engineer role in another oil producing company was able to finally secure a job for Tonye, where he had to start from the bottom due to his lack of experience in the field despite his age; he said in his own words, “I was the happiest man alive” Now Gloria was one of the bosses, at work where she held meetings with her junior engineers who were Tonye’s direct bosses and gave instructions and commands which were transferred through to the lower cadre and her husband was one of those who had to make sure it was carried out. Domestic chores were shared by both initially until they decided to hire a help and a driver. All equipment electronics interior décor, furnishing and fittings to the highest of tastes had been bought and put in place by Gloria long before they were wed. Then one day there was a little argument because Tonye wanted to watch the football premiership and Gloria didn’t want to. She made a comment about him having to buy another Tv for himself if he wanted to watch the match that much, slowly the little argument erupted till Tonye threw the remote at the Tv causing a crack on the lcd screen and walked out into the room. Gloria was so angry and she let out venom over the Tv she used her hard earned money to buy. They had a fierce row that lasted for days then made up. Months after, another incident involving the unintentional breakage of an expensive sculpture happened which caused an argument that resulted in Gloria bringing out the previous incident and extended t to the point of mentioning words instigating how ungrateful Tonye was as she brought him out of poverty, fed, clothed and employed him. She gave him a good piece of her mind and for the first real time, Tonye’s ego was completely deflated as a man. He became a silent defeated man trying to be extremely careful of his wife’s “properties” letting her have her way with things. Gloria noticing the effect of this now regularly used it to her advantage whenever they had a misunderstanding or to get him to do something, anything even at work! But one day Tonye had enough! ………………………. |

Hmmm some interesting points here especially concerning the septic tank issue, ive heard of it but i would like to hear 1st hand from a professional. However am an Architect and building consultant and i disagree with the parapet wall story, it is not suitable for some climatic zones of Nigeria, especially coastal zones. Well constructed Parapet walled buildings do absolutely well in the Northern part of Nigeria. What exactly is the conventional head-room in Nigeria? studies have shown and regulations state that 3meters height is good enough for building head-rooms for thermal comfort in Nigeria if this has been observed, Stuffiness would probably have arisen due to faulty building solar and wind orientation, lazy defenseless design features and most often bad choice of building materials. Increasing the level of your window should enhance lighting, reduce cost on blocks but might not necessarily increase ventilation as a lot of other factors are involved in enhancing wind suction pressure into buildings, this involves specific design principles used by good Architects and not easily available or decipherable to laymen. I agree partly with the statement in *4, due percolation of tank overflow water into slabs and other concrete members causing a saturation at some point resulting in structural weakness. However these can be controlled and prevented by following correct design, construction, material and maintenance guidelines. Most importantly never rely on a DIY (Do it yourself ) method when it comes to designing or building complex buildings, nor should you patronise inexperienced or non professionals in a field, they would only give you incorrect or unfounded advice and cause you to over spend. ![]() |
Firstly it is important that We Architects educate fellow Nigerians to get the accurate definition of specific building design terms thereby preventing the entire Naija populace from looking like ignoramuses to the outside world! A duplex is a -semi-detached or dual-compartmentalised building containing 2 identical self-contained units of apartments either on a vertical or horizontal plane. what the poster referred to as a detached house is a faulty definition as this is a generic term which could equally refer to a bungalow. The right term for what is erroneously called a duplex and which is "advertised" by mahal above is actually referred to as a maisonette check it up http://www.thefreedictionary.com/maisonette While a bungalow despite it's original definition based on origins or whatever, is technically correct as is understood by Nigerians; it is a self contained any number of rooms but has kitchen and bathroom within single floor building under one roof. And to add to the posters point, vertical construction has always been adapted for the purpose of land conservation and to prevent urban sprawl by the choking up of available land mass quickly, hence planning authorities limit such sprawl in certain choice areas by putting a high cost per sq meter horizontal development cost, hence forcing people to adapt to this particular vertical construction style to achieve all their required space yet still conserving the land. ![]() |
kemd:@Kemd, hmmmm i've never heard of those, do you by chance have any idea how much they make how and what it is they actually do? |
sunjongs:There actually is you know? There is something called Professional or expert witnessing where you give account of something in court to support the prosecutor based on your experience in a particular field, and even there are special benefits and money paid to event witnesses, police spies/ hoodrats or snitches by the cops and district attorney if you can give valuable evidence in court against a very serious crime or criminal cartel . However though it is paid for in many developed countries you wont get nothing for doing that IN Naija? ![]() |
Am beginning to see a difference between working as a highly paid professional and doing a highly lucrative profession. The highest paid professionals might not necessarily be working in a highly lucrative field, i.e they get a job to do every once in a long while, but once they hit a job or contract, they cover for all down time and even meet up with those that have been gathering for months or years. A lucrative profession on the other hand might not necessarily pay that much but is always needed and has a job to do hence the continuous selling of time for salary gathering at the end the months. Or what do u think, i think we should argue on these lines. this is especially for those trying to make up their minds of what to study, or what their kids want to study, the sky is your limit ![]() |
@ Ajanlekoko, i never knew there was anything like a list of "the most sought after professions" in Nigeria as you explained earlier, sounds very interesting, i guess if they are most sought after they should be quite lucrative . How i wish our statisticians, social studiers, economic researchers and even actuaries could put themselves to good use and carry out sensible researches on issues like this as is done in most civilized countries instead of filling up the banks. bawomolo:Thats not true, UK has got a list of the highest earners and among the top 15, we have entrepreneurial plumbers earning over £100,000 (circa N25,000,000) a year far above most of our educated professional engineers who are permanent staff in the oil and gas industries earning an average of £35,000 (N8,750,000) a year. I believe there are some hidden money makers like these in Naija which we haven't given a thought, , innit ![]() |
chakula:There is no proposed salary increase in actual sense, the president only resolved the issue of relativity in the public service, which has resulted in distortion in the salaries of different cadres in the civil service and public service. The president said that the distortions in pay relativity in the public service had been addressed and based on this, the new salary scale would take effect from July 1, 2010. The misinformation about an increased minimum wage being spread about by the media is due to his miscomprehended Speech by our olodo journalists. I mean is this English really that hard?! We are educated c'mon visit for more info http://www.tribune.com.ng/index.php/front-page-news/6141-fg-dashes-workers-hope Coming to your question as per the increase reaching banks; except the bank is owned by the federal govt and it consists of civil servant of between level10 to 17, Am afraid the above does not apply, hope your query is satisfied |
Osama10:Heeyah, are you saying as an Engineer u aint gunning for job satisfaction and good money in your profession that u prefer bunkering, fraud and kidnaping?!! This is serious! |
Superbrain:I believe real professionals are those that can set up on their own, embark on a project plan and complete it with their knowledge and expertise not those who go to sell their lifetime for a salary and once they lose their jobs become a nuisance to family and society. We have many here in the UK who came by HSMP or Student visas. Now do u think this above really falls into the said category |
Osama10:and what do yo study to become those? how lucrative is that, which one of these are u? ![]() |
Many years ago and even till recently many parents were bent on forcing their kids to study certain popular courses at university to become successful professionals in life. We were used to people boasting about their admission or training in professions like Law, medicine and engineering. However today in present day Nigeria, many Lawyers seem to be so broke earning a miserable sum a year, doctors fight so much so often to prove they are worthy of a good salary which is constantly under review, most engineers are now in our banks trying to make a living and so are many others who studied philosophy, pharmacy, quantity surveying and even yoruba. Business administrators are mostly in the course to end up as traders, accountants are trying but i know just a few very successful ones and so on and so forth So which profession today do you believe still lives up to its name today earning big bucks, stays professional, can be established individually and not easy to break into by just anybody. If u think yours is so special and strictly still professional lets talk welcome ![]() |
AqRiUs Age:This is only due to ignorance of factors that influence price determination. A lease contract settles all, any landlord can put any price on a property no matter the area. The tenant is in a position to negotiate and agree or disagree at the beginning of a new lease if not happy he/she can leave or wait to be given a quit notice whereby the conditions of 3 to 6months as explained by Syker comes into play. many people get lucky only because landlords are ill informed about their rights, or because they have agreed to be monitored by a landlord association in the area, which is not compulsory as there are no legal straits to it |
@ poster. The problem your landlord is facing is due to a lack of documentation of any written contracted agreement with respect to the lease of the property. Every country has laws that govern the lease, rentage or hire of property, However this can be superseded when a contract of agreement of specific terms exists between the landlord and tenant duely authographed and copied to both parties in the presence of a solicitor, Agent, witness or NO ONE. A lease period is simply the minimum period (months or years) of which the property is agreed to be let out by THE LANDLORD at a specific price under stated conditions which must be upheld by both parties. Within this period, the landlord has no right to change or add any new condition to the lease except if hitherto provided for by a clause in the agreement. what all the jargon above simply means is that if a landlord accepts to rent out his property for a lease of say 5yrs at a certain price per month, the tenant will pay the same amount per month for the entire 5 years and the landlord can only change the conditions e.g increase the rent after those 5 years. hence increasing the rent abruptly b4 the end of this period contravenes the contract and here the Tenant can sue him. On the other hand the tenant is expected to have paid money for a month ahead in advance, and if he decides to opt out of the deal any time before the 5 years ends, he would have to give an advance notice of a month if not would forfeit the money. As per your question "when is it right for a landlord to increase his rent and when the time comes, will the tenant inform the landlord that it is time to increase his rent". the landlord can only increase it after the initial lease period has ended with an advance period notice for which the tenant agrees or prepares to leave the property. if the landlord forgets to do this then and the lease ends the law of "tacit relocation" might come to play, which means that all initial conditions of the former lease will be re-asigned for the next 5yrs. a good lawyer can fight it out hope this helps cheers |
Funny as various peeps here have mentioned, i was just about to say the same thing, there is a chain mail that was being circulated for years with this same story but about the BIBLE. But even then if this can be applied to the Koran i should expect this to make Muslims to be more refined and peace loving, what ive experienced so far is a bunch of robot-like peeps looking for any little opportunity for martyrdom through eliminating people who dont agree with their principles, so as to inherit scores of sex playmates, the muslims that are not too fanatical about this stuff are termed not real, talk about Yoruba vs Hausa muslims. What a bunch of confusion, what do they really stand for? |
Ivynwa:I was impressed and touched by your statement above, if only more women were like you. i have been down the line of beauty and no brains before spent a lot on investing in a girl i intended to marry, but all she did was take, take, take! and couldn't do anything for herself she was mad beautiful and sensual but that was where it stopped. if she was given a million, she would only think of clothes, fast foods, flashy stuff and when it ended just came back asking for more, she always tried to charm lecturers for marks at Uni cos of her laziness, couldn't even keep any of the part time jobs i got for her to learn to become self dependent as she always got sacked or suspended for her laissez-faire attitude . Dont get me wrong she was really loving and caring, but thats just not enough. Ladies like that believe they can get all they want with their charm or beauty and never really spend time investing in themselves, they are so lazy to even educate themselves, they spend all four years in uni daydreaming about catching a man who will bear all their burdens maybe open for them a shop or sponsor trips to Dubai hence their education was all wasted. Needless to say i dropped her needy ass after i got fed up for 4yrs of non improvement! I still loved her, but marriage is about more than just that, it is a union of two complete individuals who complement each other and add value to the home. I later found someone like you who strived on her own, knows what she wants in life, was willing to struggle independently for it and adds value to me. she is not as beautiful as the first but she is more than a backbone to me, we'll get hitched soon and can rest assured I'll have children who wont be dumbasses |
I thought those eccentric biafrites were gone! Please to all these unintelligent ones, this is a new generation, we have moved forward we have gathered knowledge and have come to understand the manipulative propaganda over our nation by the west. Abilola was a thief- yes he stole, but whatever he stole has been paid back a hundred fold. Throughout my life i have met so many people who benefited from this great man. He donated a library and bore hole for my secondary school, my polytechnic medical centre was donated by him, my university civic centre was donated by him, and funny enough i was educated in the west, East and south south. i have come across various people whose educational scholarships were sponsored by MKO both in Nigeria and the UK, He sunk boreholes in various communities, financially supported various Nigerian positive interest groups. And you know what? these things were done all over Nigeria to without any reservation to tribal sentiments including these ungrateful biafran's areas. He won the election because people voted for him, people who knew his good works, EVEN BIAFRITES! The West stood against Abiola becoming president because of what he intended to do, which would have limited their political and economic manipulation over Nigeria. He believed in justice and wanted to see a real poverty alleviation and independence but the West which constitutes the"New world order" wanted to maintain manipulation over nigeria as they have done with many countries of the world especially africa, hence had to prevent him through their humble servant IBB. then they Killed HIM. goggle These words new world order, check you tube as well for facts. and maybe you will understand the whole charade. |
