PriboD: Dear VO,
I recently got an admission to a school in the USA. I have been in Nigeria due to the Covid-19 situation. My school is to resume this fall which I have already selected the virtual class option. I was awarded a Teaching Assistantship (TA) role and was assigned a Supervising Professor (SP) with a monthly stipend starting from August. I got in contact with the Associate Dean concerning my work by August virtually which was okay by my SP as he was also planning to have his classes virtually this fall and we will be assisting him remotely too. My Dean got in contact with the Director of the International Student office and they got to me by email stating that I cannot resume work since I am not in the USA. They also stated that since I do not have my SSN yet, there is no way I can be on-boarded as a TA since I am a new student. That a new student can only get an SSN if they are in the USA. Also that I do not have what is required to get my I-9 process. The contract I signed with school stated I resume work as a TA this fall. My stipends are going to be held until I resume work which my Dean is now proposing by Spring semester. I contacted a friend who informed me I can get my social security number while I am still in Nigeria. That once that is sorted I should contact the Dean again and inform him how passionate I am about resuming work this fall. Since my assigned class for the fall is going to be an online/remote instruction. Please, is it possible I can get my SSN while I am still in Nigeria as a new student? I checked out their website but I saw a lot of confusing options. But my friend was certain I can get it if I contact them. How do I go about this? Thank you VO VOs are not here anymore, they used to be but no longer responding to messages on NL you cant get your SSN when you're not in the country. You DONT have a student visa neither have your entered into the US. Wait for spring semester as they have advised - hopefully before then you can get your student visa and travel In the meantime go ahead and book US visa appointment, I believe abuja dates are open from November pending when visa services open fully. |

sonofakin: I doubt if it is about Nigeria and the fact that they are not handling the virus well. It is bigger than that. VFS resumed office resumed services for different countries already, UK has announced resumption too. In my opinion, US are only using the situation to delay Visa services. If not, what of the numerous countries that are 'handling the Virus well', NZ for example. A lot are doing well with respect to their curves and routine Visa services have not resumed yet. Truth is Nigeria will continue with this trend for a while, I dont even know if I should call it a trend N.B the notice from the link posted previously are on other embassy pages too, including US embassy in UK. I guess they are tired of people sending them emails to ask questions and also flooding their social media pages with questions Uk visas are different process - no inperson appointments. Public doesnt interface with the Consulate at all. You submit documents to a 3rd party and your documents are scanned/mailed to even the UK sometimes. The only interview you could have done for a visa to the UK was a skype style interview at TLS office. VFS and TLS in Nigeria pretty much had social distancing pre-COVID-19 so they can resume services easily. US is a totally different process if your country doesnt have a visawaiverprogram with them then you will do in-person interview outside the US. Even within the US those adjusting status have to sit in for in-person interviews - they need the in-person to suss out applicants reactions and demeanour. They dont trust your documents to be genuine and wont base too much on anything you submit. |

davido05: Nigerian government decides. Nope, untrue. Consulates/Embassies open at their discretion based on their own assessment of local conditions They are already running on minimal staffing because a good number of staff and their families have been evacuated, so till those persons return or come back then routine services can not be conducted. Bare in mind that consulates have many Nigerian staff as well some of which have contracted corona too Absolutely nothing to do with Nigerian government - commercial flights have not become routine so why would routine visa services become routine. Unless you are called for an interview during this period because it is considered an emergency then Id say chill till late August/September by then open skies will be more routine. When airspace opens up internationally then you can expect the rest to start |

Thanks They are conducting interviews - mostly emergency and expedited interviews. DHS had already said consulates can go ahead to interview those not affected by EOs so those type of interviews and emergency travel interviews ( medical or those who need to accompany others with valid US passports and need or choose to evacuate) Bare in mind these are interviews that they would schedule and contact you or in the case of those accompanying US citizens you would have to fill their form with your details. |

Neeta02: Good day house. I dunno if I’m in the right thread. My sis who’s a US citizen filed petition for my dad last year, around the later part of the year. She got a mail some days back that they need concrete evidence to show that my dad is really her father, they said the birth certificate she submitted from census( dunno if that’s correct) was obtained when she was 28years, so they want a more concrete proof that she’s his daughter. Please what do you suggest we do? My dad is here in Nigeria, though he has visited US before. It is odd that they are asking for further proof at the petition stage. It may be helpful to just send pics of both your dad and sister from a young age to adulthood and see where that goes. I mean are they going to accept DNA results from any random place? Usually DNA evidence would come in at the interview stage where the embassy should give details on how to do it right? |
Travel › Re: At The NVC Processing Stage Of The U. S Family Based Preference Category. by Taal17: 6:38pm On Jul 01, 2020 |
Duuzsz: Hello Neeta02, I guess they found something inappropriate about the details your sister submitted years back, probably a background check was done and the following might have been the cause:
1. The names on the documents she submitted as her father name does not match with name she’s trying to petition.
2. The date of birth might be the Issue as well, probably she reduce her age in the course of traveling or the father date of birth does not match, hence, a significant or insignificant age gap.
The list can go on and on, the main point is, they found something inappropriate with the documents she submitted which make them doubts her.
And the only solution is to opt for a DNA test ( the concrete proof they need). I know it’s expensive and time consuming but this is what your sister need to convince them. It will shut them up once it’s done. |

Cervage: For those who have had CR1 visa interview, does it happen in a private room, or you have to stand faced between the little window where everyone can eavesdrop in your convo? no private room Same space as other interviewees Also depends on the location of your interviewer - there is one room that is closed off but even that still has space for other interviewees so no privacy per se |

If your Spouse or child under 21 of USC, IR (except parents) then embassies are already treating these cases for interview in other countries and so will nigeria soon enough. Those with cancelled interviews would be done first then scheduling dates for DQ I suspect more consular services will open up in August. For those affected by all EOs and travel bans specific for countries till after Election in November. Who becomes US President will decide a lot |

cooooooks: The website above is a UK website.
A friend (white Canadian) went to the UK for masters and worked as a nanny. This is not uncommon. The point is to not change the nanny life to what we do to house helps in Nigeria.
Don't become another example of immigrants who bring people from their countries to become, in the eyes of charities and the govt, slaves.
Like I said before, what you're offering is a good opportunity, especially if they can stay after studies. However, if you overdo it, if they are on call throughout the day, the amount they're supposed to be paid will quickly skyrocket. That 15,000 will begin to look like child's play. Bingo |

Naira235: Hi Everyone, I have been paying high money for childcare here in UK and its giving me a second thought. My husband is a medical doctor and I work as a nurse for half days in a week, so we don't have to work all day and time to be financially okay as this is our first child and she is just 8 months old.
I can only afford to sponsor one person for MSc and the person has to be assisting me in childcare as a compensation.
I have a younger sister whom I am 6 years older than, she is a graduate but not currently working. She is a spoilt child been the last born and I am the first born. I found it very difficult to control her as an elder sister while in Nigeria. She is a graduate, and she is tired of Nigeria, she is also a burden on my parents as she has been living and feeding on them. Most times I send them money she spends 80% of it for herself and she is been treated as a pet been last child. I am afraid I won't be able to control her as my sister when she comes over.
I have another lady, she was the daughter of my boss where I was learning Tailoring in Nigeria. She and her mother were so respectful and caring. They are very poor and have no support anywhere so I am thinking of inviting her over for her MSc abroad and to also be taking care of my child for few days in return for her school fees. Note : that is aside from their 20 hours work per week allowed on their student visa, so they can also work and have money.
The childcare is just few days in a week from 8am to 2pm. And I am hopeful it won't affect their studies.
Who is the right person to invite? Please I need your advice . Thanks all Get someone else for your childcare. This is MSc - you can not predetermine what their school time would be How do you want to tell a postgrad student to sit and childmind from 8am - 2pm. They are adults and you can not enforce anything them. You cant even force them to stay in school You will be SORELY dissappointed. Get an aupair please and use the money you want to spend on studeis, air ticket and visa on paying for that |

The amount there is about 17k and their service seems to have improved. Pls I need experiences from those who have used it, thanks to everyone in advance. Used it at least twice. Go ahead, you'll be able to pay online too. Ensure you print out all the documents required Then go to Immigration office and head straight to SERVICOM desk they will then give you another set of forms to complete as well as an application letter to write. You need you NIN number for passport renewal Even if you give immigration officers money it is the same website that they will use |

[quote author=pristine88 post=90945455]I want to be very careful with all this people promising me it can be done in Nigeria.. Cant wait for this long and then get issues due to fake documents but if anyone can recommend a trusted link perhaps i will consider!
Then get a lawyer to go Alagbon police station which is where it is done
Pay lawyer for his services, He will collect the form on behalf of his client and send it to you - you'll then thumbprint scan and send back to him
Worst case a lawyer will charge you 15k-20k
If you dont trust people you know offline to not scam you, wouldn't forum people tat are anonymous not do the same? If you cant come to do it yourself then get a lawyer to do it. |

Breathing issues should not be taken lightly Ginger lemon will not solve that Antibiotics do not kill COVID 19 - It is not a bacteria its a VIRUS Thats why SELF ISOLATION is important. I know too many people having it - whole families where 4 are fine and 1 person died yet they all had COVID-19 This Self-Denial is irresponsible for others and the fact that you are all sharing this means you know its COVID Herd Immunity is Russian roulette Please get tested , call NCDC and know for sure. You can self isolate at home if you so wish and are asyptomatic. They will just keep checking on your welfare and if it gets bad they can take in you in for care |
