Politics › Re: The MINT Countries: Nigeria Amongst The Next Economic Giants? by taharqa: 8:58pm On Jan 06, 2014 |
shymexx: I'm a tad bit skeptical about this MINT thing by Jim O'Neill again. I believe he means well and Nigeria has so much potentials, however, sometimes we have to be realistic and not let the need to always look objective towards Africa give people false hopes. If we compare Nigeria with the other three countries that make-up the acronym - we would find out that Nigeria sure has the best potentials (on paper) among the lot. The biggest and ever growing economy in Africa. Huge young and vibrant population. And massive resources.
However, the challenges are too enormous to keep the bubble afloat for too long. The country is rife with corruption. No base for the huge economy and I dare say the Nigerian economy would crash with the smallest capital flight. No infrastructures. Lack of investments in the massive young population. Inability to diversify the economy. No middle class (the middle class keeps the economy afloat) etc.. The challenges are just too much.
There are so many skeptics about Nigeria already. And I'm sorry, Jim O'Neill is a good man, but I would have to go with the skeptics unless something is done. Some of you just come online to talk THRASH.... *smh* |

PapaBrowne: And a list of other businesses gone bad for Lagosians:
Lekki Epe Expressway buy back scam
The helicopters that were purchased for security that now help oil companies transport workers.
The moribund construction of Lekki Airport.
The empty plots of land called Lekki Free Trade zone.
The Fourth Mainland bridge constructed on Paper
The trains that were shipped from Canada 2 years ago that haven't still arrived the shores of Lagos.
The light rail which was to be commisioned in June 2013 but hasn't reached 20% completion rate.
The whole 50 Billion Dollars in budgets that LASG has ammased in 7 years is simply business gone bad.
Meanwhile, here is a list of Businesses going soooo good for Tinubu:
The construction and completion of Oriental Hotel 1 and 2.
The Construction of and completion of Ikeja Mall
The siphoning of the collective wealth of Lagosians through the Alpha Beta Company
The scooping of thousands of hectares upon hectares of Lekki Lands
The Sunborne Yatch scam
The Eko Atlantic.
Lekki Concession company toll gates
And some very serious food for thought..... Meanwhile Fashola has been able to complete only one project above 10 billion Naira in 7 years. Just one Project and that is the Ikoyi Lekki link bridge which is tolled. To put things in better perspective Fashola and Tinubu combined have ruled Lagos for 15 years and have had over $60 billion to play with. Together they have only completed one project above 10 billion naira($65 million). No major infrastructure has been completed in the city in these 15 years. To think that all those bridges and expressways and flyovers in Lagos were built in a space of less than 15 years during the Gowon era(minus the 3rd mainland in the babangida 80's), it is pathetic that anybody would praise the thieving that is going on in Lagos.
Fashola is a good administrator and I must commend how he is using administration to bring a sense of order to the city. But truthfully, on infrastructure Fasola is a big failure given that he has had over $50bn( State & LG funds) to work with in 7 years. Go and read about Bogota in Colombian and you'll know how the Fashola/ Tinubu combo has been a wasteful experience. damn.... |

This is the FULL Transcript of the New year Message of Mr President, away from possible distortions of 'over-zealots' Merchants-of-Information. ENJOY: The president also reeled out some of his achievements in 2013.
President Goodluck Jonathan has pledged to build on the achievements recorded by his administration in 2013 to make Nigeria even greater.
The President said in his New Year message to Nigerians that despite several continuing domestic and global challenges, the year 2013 witnessed many positive developments, which the country must strive to build on in 2014.
Reviewing the various achievements, the President said his administration diligently implemented its agenda for national transformation in priority areas, including power, rehabilitation and expansion of national infrastructure, agricultural development, education and employment generation.
In spite of the estimated 1.6 million new jobs he said were created in the country in 2013 as a result of his government’s policies and actions, the President said more jobs are still needed to support the country’s growing population.
“Our economic priorities will be stability and equitable growth, building on the diverse sectors of our economy,” the President said.
In 2013, he said government commenced the implementation of the National Industrial Revolution Plan, NIRP, aimed at industrializing Nigeria and diversifying the economy into sectors such as agro-processing, light manufacturing, and petrochemicals.
In addition, he said Nigeria also successfully negotiated a strong Common External Tariff, CET, agreement with the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, partners on the need to protect the country’s strategic industries from foreign domination.
As a result of his administration’s backward integration policies, Mr. Jonathan said Nigeria moved from being a net importer to a net exporter of cement, with its production capacity growing from just 2 million metric tonnes in 2002 to about 28.5 million metric tonnes today.
“For the first time in our history, we have Foreign direct investment into Nigeria has also been strong. In fact, for the second year running, the UN Conference on Trade and Development, UNCTAD, has named Nigeria as the No.1 destination for investments in Africa,” he said.
He noted the revolution in the agricultural sector, saying his administration successfully tackled corruption in the input distribution system during the year, as farmers now obtain their fertilizers and seeds directly through an e-wallet system.
About 4.2 million farmers, he said, received subsidized inputs through the programme in 2013; a scheme, he said, has restored dignity to our farmers.
Apart from the production of over 8 million metric tonnes of additional food during the year, the President said his administration was able to bring inflation down to its lowest level since 2008 partly due to higher domestic food production.
The country’s food import bill, he said, was reduced from N1.1 trillion in 2011, to N648 billion in 2012, pointing out that this has now placed Nigeria firmly on the path to food self-sufficiency.
On achievements in other sectors of the economy, the President said between 2007 and 2013, allocation for education almost tripled from N224 billion to N634 billion, apart from additional efforts towards improved access to education in the country.
These included the construction of 125 Almajiri schools, and the establishment of three additional Federal Universities in the North, bringing to 12, the number of universities established by the present administration.
Also, about 352 laboratories were rehabilitated, while 72 new libraries were constructed in the Federal Unity Schools and laboratories rehabilitated in all the 51 Federal and State polytechnics across the country.
Mr. Jonathan also assured that his administration would continue to prioritize investments in key sectors such as infrastructure development, power, roads, rail transportation and aviation.
Apart from the completion of the privatization of four power generation companies and 10 power distribution companies, Mr. Jonathan said government was also in the process of privatizing 10 power plants under the National Integrated Power Projects, NIPP.
To ensure effective evacuation and distribution of power generated, he said an additional $1.5 billion was advanced for the upgrade of the transmission network to boost electricity delivery to beyond 18 hours per day.
To cut down on public expenditure and wastage, the president said foreign travels by government personnel in all ministries, departments and agencies would be curtailed.
He said government would complete the deployment of the three electronic platforms- namely, the Treasury Single Account, TSA; the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System, GIFMIS; and the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, IPPIS- to curb leakages in the system http://premiumtimesng.com/news/152451-jonathan-lists-achievements-pledges-make-nigeria-greater-2014.html |

kel4soft: If the Honourable minister has said that the Maiduguri-PH rail line is still undergoing work. You wouldn't have seen my post. But, I got angry when he said, the project is almost complete and I find that insulting to the people of Rivers State.
Note something, I never responded the honourable minister claim on other projects accross the country cos I am not on ground to verify his claims. I am more interested on what is going on in my domain. If you go through my threads, I applauded them for the pace of work going at East-West road. I don't join issues, just to join the bandwagon. Go through my threads and comments. You will see I have been balance. I am more interested with benefits my state gets from every angle.
You don't know how I tackle my state Government on twitter, facebook, forums and so on. Strictly on development in my state.
Sometimes I pay my personal transport to ascertain if our commissioner of works is on point on some of his press releases. I have also taken my time to visit some projects going on in my state going as far as asking the contractors questions. There was a particular time I visit a certain bridge going on around my neighbourhood every sunday to see the progress of work. And if am not satisfy, I quickly send my complains to them.
Even though I have never criticised Amaechi here doesn't mean I don't agree on some issues levelled against him. But, I try my best in clarifying where necessary and leave the rest for posterity to judge. Here are my assertions once again: Now, let me make my own assertions: --- The PH-Maiduguri Rail Route is undergoing complete rehabilitation in sections by 3 diff companies with some like the Enugu-PH subsection almost done, whilst the Kuru-Maiduguri Section has sm challenges , namely Security.
--- The main challenges along the Enugu-PH route HAVE BEEN SOLVED; as already trial/duty trains have started to run tru said route. Here are 2 reasons, amongst others, why I made them: The management of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) Eastern District has commenced full rail services within the precincts after a protracted revitalisation programme by the Federal Government to return the rail system of transport in the country to its glorious days.
NRC’s Eastern District Manager, Mr. Felix Njoku said in a press release issued in Enugu that, "in a bid to revitalise the rail sector in Nigeria, Federal Government awarded contracts for the rehabilitation work of the western and eastern railway lines.
“Most of the track materials required for the eastern line rehabilitation have been imported and delivered to Port Harcourt station. To enhance speed of rehabilitation work, the contractor (ESER West Africa) has successfully connected all the missing sections of the lines between Port Harcourt and Enugu."
Njoku said NRC had deployed one locomotive and several open flat wagons from Enugu to Port Harcourt which confirmed that the major challenges faced on the rehabilitation project had been surmounted.
He said the Nyaba Bridge in Enugu, the reconstruction of the heavy washout at Eziama in Aba and the re-construction of Bridge 3 in Port Harcourt were all completed.
The Eastern District Manager further disclosed that movement of the imported track materials by rail from Port Harcourt to various locations along the eastern railway corridor where they are needed for rehabilitation work has commenced adding that items to be lifted in the operations include; 13,5000 pieces of 12 meter long UIC 50 Rails, 165,000 pieces of steel sleepers, associated fish plates, pandrol clips, bolts and knots.
Managing Director, NRC, Engr. Adeseyi Sijuwade disclosed that the, "delivery of 16,795 tons of railway track materials will result in the removal of 560 Trailer trips from the road, thereby reducing the potential of road accidents and damage to the roads." http://www.worldstagegroup.com/worldstagenew/index.php?active=news&newscid=10220&catid=2 And, http://fmi.gov.ng/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Ministry-of-Transport.pdfPlz, read pgs.15-20 for PICS and other materials on work done on the Enugu-PH Route; in fact, read from pgs. 5-57 on Info as well as PICS on the Rail sector within a 1 year period.
