Politics › Re: I Will Never Forgive Obasanjo - Buhari In An Interview With THE SUN by taharqa: 4:24pm On Dec 22, 2013 |
Sirniyeh: General Muhammadu Buhari has been known to be taciturn, always keeping his feeling to himself except on few occasions when his bottled-up emotions took over him and resulted in tears. But in an exclusive interview with the Sun Newspapers, the General spoke about his relationship with other notable generals like Ibrahim Babangida and Olusegun Obasanjo. He also spoke about the 1966 Coup, her daughter who recently died, and his plans for the general elections in 2015. Please read excerpts from the interview below:
When people talk of Buhari today, they are looking at a disciplined man. Was it the boarding house that put you through that or the military? Was the boarding house part of where you got your Spartan, disciplined life? Both did. As I told you, the teachers then treated their students as if they were their own children. So, we got the best of attention from teachers. And as I told you, they never spared the cane. You were meant to do your homework; you were meant to do the sports and clean up the environment, the compound and the area of the school and so on. And from that type of life, I moved into the military, the military of that time.
But during the Obasanjo administration, you had become a minister, as it were. No. I first became a governor when Murtala came, in North-East. This same North East that is giving problem now. Yes. I was there and there were six states then: Yobe, Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba.
During your time as petroleum minister, what were you doing differently that they are not doing now that has made the sector totally rotten? Well, I was lucky again. When I was made a minister, I met an experienced man, a person of great personal integrity, the late Sunday Awoniyi. He was the permanent secretary then before the Supreme Military Council approved the merger of the Nigerian National Oil Corporation (NNOC) and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and made Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Sunday Awoniyi was then the permanent secretary of the ministry. That was when I was sworn in eventually, I think in 1977, it became NNPC when the ministry and the NNOC were merged. He retired from the civil service. Another competent technocrat, Morinho, he became the Director of Petroleum Resources and he had a very competent team of Nigerian engineers, petroleum engineers and chemical engineers. And as minister of petroleum, I signed the contract for Warri Refinery, for Kaduna Refinery, for more than 20 depots all over the country, for laying of pipelines, more than 3200 kilometers and I couldn’t recall Nigeria borrowing a kobo for those projects. And then, by the time I became head of state, because I went to War College in the United States before the military handed over to the Second Republic and came back in 1980 and then, there was coup at the end of 1983. And that time, you can verify from Professor Tam David-West who was Minister of Petroleum Resources. We were exporting 100,000 barrels per day of refined products.
Well, some of us have heard that you used to smoke. Do you still smoke? What are those things you have given up? I used to smoke, but of course, I abandoned it I think in 1977. Oh really? Before you became head of state? Yes, I stopped smoking. Have you ever taken alcohol? No. Never? Never. Even as a young man and all that? No, no. Even in the military tradition, how they break you in, I said well, the military did not stop anybody practising his religion. My religion said no alcohol and no alcohol. So, that was respected. I was never forced to take alcohol and I have never voluntarily taken it because I want to remain alert all the time. There is a tendency that when you drink, you would want to have a bottle more, or a glass more and do something stupid.
Ok, what of Obasanjo? What kind of relationship do you have? Obasanjo; he mobilized Nigerian voters against me.
But you have forgiven him? No, I haven’t forgiven him (laughter). And I will never forgive him...because I dont support corruption and I will never support any image that will militate against the common Nigerian

simpleseyi: If all Nigerians and PDP members are corrupt but only GEJ is incorruptible, then corruption will be wiped out of Nigeria because once GEJ jails one or two corrupt Nigerians, all other looters will sit right and cure themselves of corruption. Once the leader is upright, the followers will all follow suit. Obasanjo was very very corrupt, that was what made all the political office holders in his administration corrupt.
GEJ is PDP and PDP is GEJ, that is why GEJ is called the party leader, just like APC is Thienubu and Buhari and Tinubu and Buhari are APC. Also, GEJ is Nigeria and Nigeria is GEJ, that is why GEJ is called the Leader of Nigeria. If GEJ is corrupt, then Nigeria is corrupt. I hope you know that you hv not answered the guy's question... |

The 3 NEITI Sector-wide Audit Reports are from d period 2006-2011 (even though it was this Govt that did d 3 Audits where previous Govts had refused to), Whilst d now discredited Sanusi 'letter' was supposedly for d periods 2012-July 2013. Much of d bulk of d $9billion 'unremitted' fund discovered by the NEITI Audits are owned by Oil Companies like Shell, Chevron, etc (I undastad the Govt has already recovered about $2.5bn of this monies so far); Whilst, Sanusi falsely alleged that NNPC was solely responsible for d phantom $50bn 'unremitted' funds. It was this very GEJ Govt that decided to do these Audits starting from periods b4 it came to power to d 1st year of its own term (where oda previous Govts refused to conduct such open audit on d murky industry); it was this GEJ's Govt who appointed d current board of NEITI directly from d Civil Rights community and gave them almost complete access to d corrupt Oil and Mining Sector in order that NEITI's Audit firms cud do their jobs relatively unimpeded, unlike what obtained previously. In fact, the Access and Transparency as well as a fine job done by an unimpeded NEITI was such that EITI (d International body rep for Oil/Mining Transparency in d world) recognised NEITI as d BEST MINING TRANSPARENCY AGENCY in d world this year- this is after this same EITI threatened to suspend NEITI in 2010 for not conducting any meaningful Audits up to that time (ie b4 GEJ came in, appointed d new board and gave them a free hand to work). The Chair of EITI visited GEJ a few months ago, where GEJ himself announced that an Interministerial Committee to enhance d recovering of d outstanding 'unremitted' fund wud be set up soon; that is EXACTLY what d SSG just did now. This has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with that Sanusi's sillly 'letter', and d fact that 'Ndu-chuks' chose to do so just goes to show how Crazzi he is.... Any attempt by d Shameless PROPAGANDISTS to not only take d Credit for this from GEJ but also turnaround to smhow blame him for it, is incredibly WICKED and wud be Resisted. At this point, Saner persons shld be asking themselves how we can all see to d logical end of this encouraging process and in fact deepen it, Not to play Kiddagarten Politics with it... |

To think you claim to be a graduate is really mind blowing as your level of deduction is not only appalling, but is comparable to that of an individual who never saw the four walls of an elementary school and brought up in the mid wild What a pathetic and ignoble character. A class slack [/quote]No need. This is the Document in full: PRESS RELEASE NON-OIL COLLECTION UP, AS FIRS NETS N2.43 TRILLION IN 6 MONTHS The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has continued to record steady increases in the amount of revenue generated through taxation as it collected N2.43 trillion in the first half of year the 2012. This collection represents an increase in the revenue collection performance of N499.20 billion when compared to the total collection of N1.94 trillion for the same period in 2011. Non-oil amounted to N838.58 billion out of this total collection, while receipts from oil taxes accounted for N1.60 trillion, In 2011, the Service recorded N955.19 billion in the first Quarter and N985.30 billion in the Second quarter. The 2012 figure represents a remarkable increase in tax collection which includes Oil and Non-oil revenue with both recording N1.17 trillion and N1.26 trillion in the First and Second quarters respectively. This stride demonstrates the Service’s resolve, not only to achieve the N5.085 trillion set target for the year, but to also increase the non oil taxes and lessen Nigeria’s dependence on oil as its main revenue earner. The Acting Executive Chairman of FIRS, Alhaji Kabir Mashi, had on assumption of office, early April, charged both Management and staff of the Service to up the ante and ensure that the progressive history of tax revenue collection by FIRS over the years does not drop. A look at the collection from the Oil sources shows that N1.59 trillion was realised from Petroleum Profit Tax (PPT), while Gas Income (GI) accounted for N9.04 billion. Similarly, Non-oil sources recorded N405.58 billion collection from Companies Income Tax (CIT), N3.35 billion for Capital Gains Tax (CGT) and N3.25 for Stamp Duties in the same period. The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Import and Non Import Value Added Tax (VAT) recorded N353.83 billion, Education Tax (EDT) accounted for N32.8, while National Information Technology Development Fund (NITDEF) yielded N8.52 billion. Personal Income Tax (PIT) and Pre-Operational Levy (POL) on the other hand yielded N28.56 billion. A further breakdown of the collection performance trend shows that the Service so far recorded the highest collection of N554.03 billion in June, followed by N466.86 in the month of February. Other collection for the period under consideration includes N385.17 billion in April, N369.38 billion in January, N336.21 billion in March and N328.02 billion in the month of May.
