4Him:
you essentially have revealed yourself to be a professional liar.
You claimed that you made your discovery of the missing verses of Mark "while thumbing through my copy of a modern bible" . . .
That indicates that you have read and clearly remember almost all verses in the two of the best and oldest Greek copies of Mark for you to have realised they were missing from your copy of a modern bible which is basically impossible.

this points to one thing - you are basically copying these "questions" from other sources while dressing them as your own.

Now back to your questions . . . several of the manuscripts that make of the bible were written on parchments many of whom were already partially destroyed before they were found. HOWEVER . . . the early writers were smart enough to have left several copies of their books so that in case one was destroyed there was always one to fall back on. For example . . . 18 copies of the book of Isaiah alone was found among the dead sea scrolls found in the cave of Qumran.

Suppose a scholar just took one of those scrolls ignoring the other 17, any missing portion of that scroll automatically gets labelled as never having existed by hypocrites like you. If another scholar reconstructed the missing parts from the other 17 copies . . . would u assume that those missing parts were fixed by the early christians?
What do you mean I am a liar? I copied those words from the bible on the desk right now, although I had known about them being classed as interpolation for about a year. (Robert Ingersoll discussed this in one of his speeches in the 19 century but was not confirmed until the 20 century with the discovery of older manuscipts).

I personally did not do the comparisons, nor would I have been able to as I am not a Greek scholar. So I cannot have been lying as I copied those words verbatim from my bible. Can you prove that I did not get them from my bible?

BTW, it matters little whether I got it from the internet. If I got it from a website, I would have put the link there. I was simply writing from memory and from what caught my eye this evening in the book of Mark. The fact still stands that these verses are known by the majority of NT scholars to be interpolations. I did not claim to be the discoverer of this fact. So you accusations on my character are groundless.
Christianity Etc › On The Authenticity Of The New Testament, Part 2 by therationa(op): 8:56pm On Feb 14, 2008
This evening, while thumbing through my copy of a modern bible I came across the following in the book of Mark chapter 16;

Verses 9 - 20 are not included in two of the best and oldest Greek copies of Mark.

Basically, this means that scholarly opinion is that verses 9 - 20 were interpolated (made up) much later by copy-ists or scribes. It is very likely that early believers questioned the sudden and abrupt ending of the pre-interpolated version and decided to fix it by added their own stuff.

Now, should we consider verses 9 - 20 as inspired?

Imhotep,

Sorry, I did not mean to give the impression that I was not going to read the document from Aquinas. I have had a cursory look and guess what? This is a massive document. Have you ever read it?

If I had the rest of the year I don't think I could complete reading this document even if that was the only thing I did.

If you have read it, can you summarise the salient points please.

Christianity Etc › How Is Salvation Achieved? by therationa(op): 7:40pm On Feb 14, 2008
How does none come to achieve Salvation? Well, the bible is not very clear about this. I have just been reading the bible and came off with the following options;

Salvation through WORKS/LAW

Salvation through FAITH

Are both necessary and sufficient for salvation OR is it either alone necessary and sufficient for salvation.

Now, if you are a WOMAN it appears that these two are not sufficient for salvation, for there is a third pre-requisite for salvation; CHILDBEARING.

Those women who have never born a child are there excluded from salvation?

Is Salvation available to those who have never heard the message of Jesus? For instance, our forefathers in Africa 2000 years ago.

How about those who live today in places where the message of Jesus has not yet gotten to? For these people, is it worth taking the message of Jesus to them?

olabowale:
The condition (the true story) of Jesus is more than what is in the Bible. Infact it is a very different story The Bible did not tell us how his mother marry was able to survive, the Mosaic law of adultery/fornication, in the hands of the elders and others, while pregnant and delivered jesus, without a human husband and human father (for her and Jesus, respectively). How did she escape their intent to carry out the punishment, which they played out later on a woman when Jesus began his Prophetic ministry? Finally, where is the Gospel of Jesus which he preached all over the places he went?

For your answer you have to go to the Qur'an. But it seemed as if you have eliminated even the thought of this Book as a reference source, when it comes to Jesus issue. I based my statement on how you worded your intro of this thread. You may correct me if i am wrong.
Thanks; But I would expect the Qu'ran to be even less reliable about Jesus than the Christian texts, given that the Qu'ran was written many centuries after Jesus lived (if he did) and all reliable records about him seemed to have been "destroyed" in the 1st century.

BTW, the Qu'ran is on a par with the bible for it monstrosity, if not more. I do not know a great deal about the i-slamic tradiction. so I cannot elaborate further.

It is universally believed by christians and non-christians that Jesus was the MOST perfect being that ever walked the earth. OK, on a purely humanistic level, Jesus may indeed have been a good man. But I think over the years following his death, a great deal of doctrinal embelishment were crafted on cosmetically on the figure of Jesus. Think of the Arian controversy (in which the question at issue was whether Jesus was simply FLESH, SPIRIT or BOTH) which was not settle until the late 4th century. Even After the Council of Nicea (325CE) which was called by Emperor Constantine, christians carried on killing each other for many decades over the real nature of Jesus. This fact is demonstrated by the very diverse nature of the christain landscape in the first 4 centuries, until christianity became the religion of the Roman empire. At this point, with the military arsenal of the Roman empire behind it, orthodox (Roman) christianity persecuted all other christian sects to extinction. Hence the demise of the various Gnostic traditions, and Arianism.

But is this what Jesus would have favoured? Why was it not very obvious to his immediate followers in the early days, exactly what nature Jesus was? Why did it have to be settled in a conference (like we settle political disputes then and now)? Can we trust the verdict of these various Councils called to resolve the matter?

Why did Jesus not ensure that HIS very nature would be communicated in such a manner as to leave NO doubt absolutely as to who he REALLY was? Was the Gnocticism or Docetism the correct view of Jesus?

How many times did god create the world? How many times did he give his laws to his people? How many times did he flood the world?

Now, these are not trivial questions, as those of you who REALLY READ your bibles may have observed. They strike right at the heart of the reliability and authenticity of these accounts.

Suffice to say for now that these narrative are each given multiple times in the bible, with each account NOT harmonising with its counterpart. The explanation for why this is so has come to be known as THE DOCUMENTARY HYPOTHESIS.

Most christians do NOT know that their god sanctions human sacrifice in the bible and indeed has an instance where it is in fact carried out.

Leviticus 27: 29:
If anyone is given for the purpose of being destroyed, he cannot be brought back; he must be put to death.

Exodus 22: 29-30
Do not hold back offerings from your granaries or your vats.
"You must give me the firstborn of your sons. 30 Do the same with your cattle and your sheep. Let them stay with their mothers for seven days, but give them to me on the eighth day.

Judges 11
Jephthat sacrifices his daughter to God

Go read these for yourselves.

In fact, why would Abraham have thought that cutting his son's throat (Genesis 22) was a suitable way to palliate god's bloodthirtiness if the practice was not already in the custom. Abraham never remonstrated with god although he is said to negotiate with god when god wants to drown the people of Sodom and Gomorah. Why did Abraham NOT attempt to negotiate OUT of killing his son? This may suggest that the culture approved of such practices.

As if human sacrifice was not bad enough, guess what. It gets even , with CANNIBALISM (See https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-113181.0.html). Yes, you guessed it. Who is ordering and forcing people to cannibalise other humans?

I am EXTREMELY EXTREMELY APPALLED at the shallow depth of knowledge MOST christians have of their bibles. In this day and age, this is a disgrace, bordering on stone-age ignorance. Most christians carry a bible (or two) on their person, walk into a church building or home devotion and only read those parts to which they are directed by the preacher or leader of the sermon ( or bible study group). Very rarely do they take a hollistic approach to the narratives of the text. This is PATHETIC.

Even fewer still are interested in the socio-cultural environment in which the bible was set and written. Few still have heard of the statesmen, historian, philosophers, and writers contemporaneous with Jesus (if he existed). So, how do they know they are NOT being FOOLED by the preachers? What is this world coming to, with this level of ignorance?
