Some Bosses are God-sent... I've had some amazing bosses in my career, let's meet one of them.. Sometime in 2006 - 2008, when I was working as a Production Operations Support Engineer, I had a boss, Dr Emmanuel Hudson Sanders (not real name? was visionary, hardworking, intelligent, and an amazing human. While working in separate teams within the same department, we both had a mutual admiration for each other, and when I was due for a promotion, he asked if I wanted to work with him, I said YES and I got transferred to work with him. Before then, I was working in the field, so, I got transferred to the office and was providing support to the field teams. My promotion was delayed.. The HR guy in charge stood on it for whatever reason. I was on Graduate Progression (GP) and it clearly stated promotion eligibility for GP. I was worried, so I complained to my boss and related what the GP stated about promotion. After listening, he just asked me one question. He said.. "All that you've told me now, if I take you to the Asset Manager, can you repeat it?" I told him YES. He held my hand and off we went to the Asset Manager. To cut long story short, my promotion letter came that week and it was backdated to my anniversary and I was paid all the backlog in salary, benefits and allowances. Some HR personnel, in the process of wanting to save costs for the organization intentionally undo others. That singular act made me go over and above to deliver for my boss. The team outperformed. He got good rankings and it trickled down to all his team members. And he projected us. He nominated me to be a member of a new initiative in Shell then called TopQuartile (TQ). This signaled my introduction to Six Sigma and business improvement, and we went around the world delivering TQ. I visited different countries (UK, Oman, Netherlands, etc), flew first class and business class, stayed in the hotel for over a year delivering TQ at different locations, got great rankings, accelerated promotions, visibility, exposure, etc. There's no way the story of TQ can be told without mentioning my name. There are some bosses you can give an arm and a leg for. Once your boss projects and ranks you well, you cannot but give your all for him. What I did well.. 1. I delivered and exceeded targets. 2. Have a Career Sponsor in your corner. Very important !! 3. I was open to learning and new challenges. 4. My boss was a hard worker and a known performer, I matched his energy and we delivered amazing results. Years later, when the Asset Manager was retiring after a meritorious service, guess who took over from him? ME !!! Is God not wonderful? I do not play with the preeminence of God in my career and life !! |
As more people continue to "Japa", there are more opportunities for the skilled professionals than ever before. We are in a time where employees are in high demand, so if you see an organization that you like, especially in Nigeria, please get a connection and proceed to apply, they just might have a role they are planning to fill. HRs of several companies have reached out to me in the last two week. I almost got tired of sending CVs. In fact, I sent out some CVs yesterday and they have all been scheduled for interview today. Yes, even HR do not waste time anymore because if they do, another company will hijack the talent. So, the summary of this post is that if you are interested and qualified to work for an organization, do not waste time at all. Just look for a connection and push your CV to the recruiting team. Meanwhile, only apply for jobs which you have the capacity to take. Wishing all applicants the very best this week. May your dream job locate you Cheers! |
JosephJP:Most jobs on the island is usually within 70-80k depending on the company. |
Dear Kwenty, How are you doing? Not to dabble into the squabble above but I think if you have stated that the client wouldn't want to disclose that, it would have been better but the manner in which you have handled it, even if the company was paying well would definitely chase people away. This is coming from a place of love and not hate Regards, Trish |

Some companies treat their staff wrongly once they hand in resignation letters... If an employee decides to move on, do not treat them unfairly during the notice period. Most organizations struggle with this aspect and they need to do better! They use this period to humiliate and treat the exiting staff unfairly. Forgetting that the exiting employee is an ambassador of the organization if he/she is treated properly. It is sad to see talents leave. Instead of handling it meanly, use the exit interview to understand why the staff is leaving, understand his/her motivations, and check if there is an alignment of the staff’s aspirations with the goals of the organization. Once this is done, it will help you know how to hire and retain employees in the future. I have spoken with a lot of guys and most have poor experiences during their exit period. Organizations can do better in managing and handling this sensitive aspect of staff offboarding.. As a leader/HR personnel in an organization, if an employee hands in his/her resignation, you can do this: 1. First, take a moment to digest the news. 2. Notice and manage any in-the-moment reactions. 3. Depersonalize the news. Do away with any emotional reaction. 4. Be curious and show a growth mindset. 5. Show your support. 6. Thank them for their hard work during the time they've been with you. Wish them best wishes for continued success. 7. Ask for what you need. When an individual gives notice, they likely have a desired end date in mind. After all, they will want to take a break before diving into a new job. Get alignment on what they need and what you need from them before they leave to ensure a smooth transition. It may involve some give and take and could include finishing a specific project or set of tasks, training others to take over these responsibilities to minimize disruption, or even hiring their replacement. Someone giving notice doesn’t have to be the end of the world or the end of a relationship. As surprised as you may be, using the seven strategies above can help you respond in a constructive way that builds the relationship and helps all parties move on positively. Have you ever encountered such? How did you handle it? |
