Christianity Etc › What Does Life Mean To You? by tobechi74(op): 6:50pm On Oct 04, 2014
Everyone has his or her
idea about what life is all about. A Christian's
view of life is definitely different from an
atheist's. The meaning of life for a Christian is
to follow God and serve Him in every part of life.
For an atheist, the purpose of life may be to
strive for success in this life--just because a person may not believe in a higher power doesn't mean is
life is devoid of purpose. In a universal sense,
I think the best was to live life to it's fullest
is to experience what you love, and to feel passion for the things that you love. I'm not talking about just material wealth. I'm not talking about happiness. I'm talking about having a feeling of accomplishment in your life, even if it means that
you have to pass through some areas of darkness to get it. We must make mistakes in order to learn from
those mistakes, and so people should not approach life thinking every skeleton in their closet will
come out to haunt them. Move on, and see what happens. Without hell, there cannot be heaven, and
so we must pass through hell a few times to
achieve what we want to achieve. It's not
easy; it's not fun, but it'll be worth it in the long run.

I think the purpose is to give back to mother earth as she has given to us. Haha I know sounds weird but just look at all the animals and plants out there. They all help eachother out which inturn helps this planet survive. We seem to have drifted away from helping and started taking it all to ourselves. So I say the meaning of life is to live in peace while helping all living things around you

Show

Because Pentecostals are always seeking the sensational, the most absurd “moves of God” are wrought in their churches. Meetings where peopleroll on the carpet, laugh uncontrollably, and evensqueal like pigs are now being branded as genuine revivals. What once prompted Jesus to cast out adevil(Mark 9:20,26), is now being foisted as a genuine manifestation of God’s Spirit. There are some preachers who, in their honest moments have their misgivings, but just want so badly to believe these things are of God. They can’t afford not to. To do otherwise is to surrender the sensationalism they so avidly crave.
Anyone can fake a few miracles as long as they have therightdisclaimers to bail them outat the right time. So many preachers claim the power to heal, yet so fewgenuinemiracles take place.

They will passionately pray for someone, then ask one-ended questions like “How do you feel now?” What do you expect them to say? “Worse”? Of course they willSAYthey feel better. Then tears of joy will begin to roll down the cheeks of the credulous.
No one has a greater propensity for exaggeration than a Pentecostal preacher. “We had a great time in God’s presence. Thousands of people were healed.”Eventhough only hundreds were present. So where is the evidence of all this healing? People are urged not to go back by doctors to confirm their healing since this would indicate doubt, and they would lose their healing. And what if they do “lose their healing”?"Wellwealready have this covered. Just say they allowed unbelief to enter.” That’s their escape hatch.

.HEDONISM

-Stress is on man-centered happiness versus God-centered holiness. They strive for heaven-on-earth now. This is evident in their teaching regarding money and possessions. All of the leading teachers are billionaires or multimillionaires.

God is the supplier of financial prosperity, health, and victory when the believer uses their faith. holds the concept that God's children should "eat the best, drive the best, and wear the best." Little emphasis on suffering from Christ, the cross, self-denial
Christianity Etc › Problem With Our Pentecoastal Church by tobechi74(op): 9:18pm On Oct 02, 2014
I also know many Pentecostal pastors who are genuine and sincere men of God, hard workers who make tremendous sacrifices for the kingdom of God. The problem really lies with the excesses of a minority of celebrity pastors, evangelists, musicians and others, and to a deeper extent with the mentality of the majority of those who constitute Pentecostal congregations. There are many who will take issue with what is written in this article, however I offer no apology

1) purpose ;

most pentecoastal churches are open because the owners want to be famous, dictaate what happens and financial benefit

2).FALSE TEACHINGS- church teachers promote a wide variety of false teachings regarding Healing, Health, Prosperity, Demons, Salvation and the Atonement.

3)
.SPIRITUAL PRIDE-Leaders of the WOF REFUSE to dialog with other members of the Body of Christ regarding their teaching. They claim their teachings come by direct revelation knowledge from God and are not subject to human scrutiny.

4)
Don’t Question Me
Pentecostals believe that it is rebellious to question the teachings and practices of authority figures. Pentecostals are taught not to question. Torationalizeis to makerational lies. It is contrary to “faith”. Once I lent a copy of HankHanegraaff’sChristianity in Crisisto a believer, and I would recommend that book to any serious Christian. She latersaidthat the Holy Ghost told her not to read that book. They would vehemently defend their pet preachers- whether they're right or wrong -but scantly contend for the Word of God. How I admire the zeal of the typical Pentecostal but how I wish that same zeal could be redirected to contending for the faith instead of defending theoftenindefensible.
As a result pastors who think they are prophets can proliferate a plethora of false prophesies, and never be branded as false prophets."Don’t touch God’s anointed."Quite frankly, as long as they have stupid people following them to the deathand paying their salary, they could get away with anything. I think it is imperative for some pastors to keep theirpeopleinignorance, so they will always maintain a following. They want to beabig fish inasmall pond, but notasmall fish inabig pond.

5)More Anointing Please!
Have you ever wondered why Pentecostal preachers can’t just say what they have to say without the fanfare and commotion? The answer is that preaching must be done in an anointed manner,or at least perceived to be so. Someone could expound the Word of God eloquently and perspicuously, he would receive economical applause. If he wants to improve the response of the crowd, all he has to do is put a little whimper in his voiceandthrow in a catchy punch line every here and there. A littlerattleand roll on strategic words and phrases would generate an even more rapturous ovation. And if he jumps a little, runs around the stage (as opposed to altar), or climbs onachairwhile preaching, he would just bring the house down.
Pentecostals don’t know the difference between anointing and crowd control. They can’t differentiate between the presence of God and goose bumps. Hence they would always be prey to any preacher who can pull out of his hatallthe slick gimmicks and frantic anticsnecessaryto promulgate himself as a genuine man of God. From my experience, people pay more regard to personalities and celebrities thantothe content of their message. The mere presence of a big named preacher or singer is sufficient to bring the best out of a crowd – and they call the ensuing applause, anointing.

striktlymi: Looking at it from the Christian perspective, I believe it is wrong not to want kids in holy wedlock. Marriage is not 'contracted' strictly for companionship.

Couples are expected to be open to the possibility of having children during the conjugal act. This is not saying, one is not permitted to plan the family size, if done appropriately.

2. Studying for the grade you can get on the test

Adult life doesn’t give letter grades. Sometimes adult life gives promotions or if you’re good at sales you might win a trip to Hawaii for your family, but in general, the reward of adult life is being able to find a path that’s good for you and put yourself on it. There’s no letter grade for that because the only person who can judge whether it’s a good path or not is you

LEARNING THE JOB WHILE LEARNING YOURSELF

a gap year is when somebody finishes high school and takes a year off before university study, presumably because you don’t learn about yourself while you are studying, so taking time to learn about yourself is important enough to give it a whole year.
This is actually true that usually you don’t learn about yourself when you’re studying, because if people tell you what to study, then you gain no insight into who you are. But if you take a year off to learn about yourself, you reinforce the idea that education and self‑knowledge are two completely different things.
However, in the workforce, education and self‑knowledge through work are the twin tickets to adult happiness. If you’re not synchronized so that you have them moving together, you will always feel like you’re missing something.

We know how proud you and your parents are of that degree. We get it. And we know you’ve been taught to believe that all you need to be successful is that certificate. Unfortunately, that piece of paper no longer makes you special in today’s workforce. Don’t believe me? Ask the millions of unemployed and under-employed graduates out there; some who come from schools with pedigree lines long enough to circle the earth.
Celebrate the win. Be proud of your commitment to education. You deserve this moment. Just realize that from the perspective of many decision makers in today’s job market, your college degree isn’t a differentiator so much as a minimum requirement.

ACCOMODATE FORCED LEARNING

the only way that you can binge learn is to know how to find course materials on your own and choose the sequence of those materials that works best for you. This means you can’t rely on someone else’s syllabus and you can’t rely on somebody laying out the steps for you.
In the workplace, to create our own value, we must create our own learning path. You have to unlearn the habit of waiting to be told what comes next in your education if you want to take control of your adult life.

Christianity Etc › 4 Wrong Teachings The Church Teaches About Sex by tobechi74(op): 6:41pm On Sep 12, 2014
Teaching about abstinence and the sanctity of sex is certainly worthwhile and biblical. But the way churches are going about it isn’t working.

Here are four of the biggest lies about sex many of us have picked up from church

1. Any and all physical contact is like a gateway drug to sex.

Once, in secondary school, I attended a big Christian youth conference. One night, one of the pastors addressed the girls: “Girls, we have noticed some very inappropriate touching going on.”

The inappropriate touching she meant turned out to be two high school couples in the youth group holding hands. This woman was deadly serious. “I know it may not seem like a big deal to you,” she said. “But hand-holding leads to other things!”

There are many valid reasons to set boundaries on your physical relationship, but the fear of accidentally having sex shouldn’t be one of them.

Many of us heard similar things from parents, teachers, church leaders and books. In some churches, it was not unusual for people to pledge not only to save sex until marriage, but even to save their first kiss for their wedding day. “Don’t start the engine if you aren’t ready to drive the car” and other similar metaphors warned that any physical contact was a slippery slope straight into the jaws of fornication.
In reality, there are so many conscious decisions you have to make between kissing and having sex. There isn’t a lot of truth to the idea that it might happen “accidentally.” Despite what Hollywood says, clothes do not take themselves off and bodies do not magically and effortlessly fit together.
If you are committed to waiting until you’re married to have sex, there are many valid reasons to set boundaries on your physical relationship, but the fear of accidentally having sex shouldn’t be one of them

2. If you wait until you are married, God will reward you with mind-blowing sex and a magical wedding night.

Saving sex for marriage is not a guarantee that you will have great sex or that sex will be easy. All it guarantees is that the person you fumble through it with will be someone who has already committed to love you forever. And fortunately, when it comes to sex with someone you’re in a lifelong commitment with, practice really can make perfect

3. Boys are visual and sexual, but girls don’t care about sex.

Most women who grew up in the Church cannot even count the times we heard something to this effect: “Boys are very visual and sexual, so even though you aren’t thinking about sex, you need to be careful because you are responsible for not making them stumble.”

Let’s disregard for now how degrading this is toward men and focus on the underlying assumption that boys are sexual and girls aren’t. For years I was told that “girls don’t care about sex

Many girls (yes, even Christian girls) think about sex. Many girls (yes, even Christian girls) like sex. This doesn’t make you a freak. It doesn’t make you unfeminine or unnatural. God created us, both men and women, as sexual beings. Enjoying sex makes you a human being created by God, in the image of God, with the capacity and desire to love—physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually and sexually

4. When you get married, you will immediately be able to fully express yourself sexually without guilt or shame.
Many Christians have spent years—from the day they hit puberty until their wedding day—focusing their energy on keeping their sex drives in check. Then, in the space of a few hours, they are expected to stop feeling like their sexuality is something they must carefully control and instead be able to express it freely. And not only that—but express it freely with another person.
Many of us have programmed guilt into ourselves—this is how we keep ourselves in check throughout our dating relationships. And that “red light” feeling we train ourselves to obey doesn’t always go away just because we’ve spoken some vows and signed some papers

Christianity Etc › Expectant Mothers In Nigeria Prefer Religious Homes To Hospitals by tobechi74(op): 6:24pm On Sep 12, 2014
By Odimegwu Onwumere

he indisputable fact that Nigeria is a religious country is even affecting the psyche of many pregnant women. They have a confidence that with their faith in their different religions, the aspect of reception to quality health and family planning are not for them.

This state-of-mind has resulted to a lot of women losing their lives in the cause of child delivery. The time they ought to have used to visit a hospital they instead use it to stay in different prayer homes supplicating, looking for Utopian miracle that most times is elusive.

Most of them have a narrow way-of-thinking, believing that since a woman is pregnant, the next level is to deliver her of the child. But they are most times oblivious that there are wobbly situations of pregnancy related impediments like obstetric fistula, which leads to caesarean section: a situation that occurs after a woman in labour must have exhausted all avenues for normal delivery.

Religious faiths quite often make these expectant mothers’ situations very unfortunate. With an account that 40 percent of the worldwide commonness of obstetric fistula is counted in Nigeria, there is an evaluation of between 400,000 and 800,000 cases of obstetric fistula, especially in the northern part of the country and with an indication of 20,000 novel cases per year, said to be the highest in the world.

It is obvious in Nigeria that many pregnant women do not care for the health administration system, but religious system for delivery. Conversely, they forgot or knew, but do not want to accept the fact that, the later does not ensure a framework supportable on the table of scientists.

What these women do not know is that there has never been a time the World Health Organisation, WHO, or any health body in the world had prescribed that annual budget for the health sector should go for the religious organizations for the purpose of child delivery.

Rather, WHO would say that at least 15 per cent of the government’s budgets should be allocated to the health sector, but especially in the developing countries, which Nigeria is a part, to enable the much expected result in health delivery achieved.

The reason most pregnant women still visit the religious bodies nevertheless does meet the eyes, not minding the epoch where governments at all levels have continued to make antenatal and postnatal overhauling free in order to support and sponsor the expectant mothers.

Government has been showing that it has a transformation agenda for the health sector, even though that such agenda has not been favourable at all levels, but, at least, it is favouring pregnant women, than any other class in Nigeria.

As one dodgy religious country, most of the women who have had unfortunate delivery in the past attribute their woes to being spiritual, especially if they were befallen by ailment before or after the process of being pregnant.

Such statement like, ‘God forbid, it is not my portion to suffer this disease again’, ‘Holy Ghost fire’, are often heard among them, while looking for solutions to their situations. Many of them diagnosed with terminal diseases prefer going to their religious organisations and with the philosophy of, ‘For divine healing’, instead of going for palliative, rather than elusive curative approach.

Nonetheless, there are people who support the thinking of these women, because the authorities have not had all the equipments for dealing with such ailments like cancer, heart disease, kidney failure, and many other mortal diseases, unlike Uganda which is said to have been only the third African country to have made morphine obtainable and reasonably-priced to her patient residents.

Morphine is yet to be accessible in Nigeria and, imagine a pregnant woman suffering from one of the diseases.

Many Nigerians would not want to be correlated with a pregnant woman, let alone, the one with a terminal disease. So, some of these women instead of going to the hospital and be mocked, prefer their religious bodies, where they believe dishonour and stigmatisation will be on errand and their situation will not be disclosed to their families and friends, to avoid family members and friends’ segregation and they may be repaired without much stress.

he professor hinges her point, saying: “The members of the palliative care team include physicians (family, surgeons, oncologists, radiotherapists, Palliative care/pain experts), nurses (hospital, community-based, private duty), pharmacists, social workers, therapists (physiotherapy, occupational, music and recreational), chaplain, families, friends, volunteers. The hospice provides palliative care to meet the entire patient’s needs (emotional, social and spiritual) as well as the needs of the family.”

Further, connoisseurs argue that as a result that health practitioners/patients have poor knowledge of soothing care, individualistic approach becomes fad to the management of terminal disease-patients, unlike in few countries – South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Egypt – where established care, support/pain control exist.

A description also has it that upon those diseases are global threats, the stigmatisation that is being shown to victims of deadly diseases in Nigeria affects the socio-economic progress of the country, as the sufferers probably miss work and, are unemployed or stop-working early.

In a testimony of May 2004, a Professor of Anaesthesia & Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, argues that such behavior against people with terminal diseases is very detrimental.

Family › I Dont Want Totally Obedient Children by tobechi74(op): 6:28am On Sep 02, 2014
If you heard someone described as obedient, what thoughts does it bring to mind? Someone with no mind of their own, who will do what you tell them, who won’t stand up for themselves. Oh no, that’s not what I’m aiming for, and so I do not want ‘obedient’ children.

Children used to be expected to be ‘seen but not heard’, to never answer back, to do as their parents say for no other reason than ‘because I said so!’ Thankfully that has changed a bit, but it does seem to me that a lot of peoplearestill striving for obedience from their children. Or at least that a lot of people expect you to be. The mother in the shopping centre with a screaming child can expect glares and ‘control your child’ comments from passersby. As if children aren’t their own person but more like possessions to be controlled.

That your parenting should be judged on how well your children behave, how quiet they are, how obedient they appear. That somehow the tighter grip you have on them, the more you are able to influence them and they will turn into a respectable adult.

And so ‘talking back’ is ok with me (as long as it’s not rudely).
Asking me why they can’t do something is ok with me.
Trying to negotiate with me is ok.
Disagreeing with me is ok.
Big feelings are ok with me, and not something to be frustrated about.
By reacting this way I am teaching them that no matter if someone is bigger, older, or more powerful, it’s ok to question or stand up for what you think is right. That you can also do this in a polite and respectful way. That often things still don’t go your way and how to deal with that. If instead I chose to enforce behaviour with punishment, never let them question me, or didn’t help them with their big emotions, then how would they learn to deal with these situations in the future? How would that effect our relationship? Would they feel valued, respected, and important? Or would they feel powerless?

I don’t want my children to grow up to be ‘obedient’ adults, who give in to peer pressure, who are afraid to voice their opinion. Nor do I want them to grow up thinking that the way we interact with people younger than us is by coercion and control. Children are a lot smarter than we give them credit for. They can handle simple age appropriate explanations for things. They deserve reasons for our actions. I doubt I would be happy to do something I didn’t want to do if the only reason I was given was ‘because I said so’. I can extend the same courtesy to my children

Family › Is Unconditional Love Practical In Marriage by tobechi74(op): 7:12pm On Aug 09, 2014
What does unconditional love mean? The dictionary defines it as love that is expressed without any limitations, conditions or expectations. When you love someone unconditionally, you don’t expect any payback or favors. You love them even when the feeling is not mutual. The best real life example of this kind of love is the love that exists between a parent and a child

Unfortunately, the subject of unconditional love within a marriageis a tricky one. Some Christians, believe that they should love one another unconditionally, just like Christ loves them. This is true to an extent. After all, marriage vows do mention loving each other “for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health” till death do you part

The trouble with this argument, however, is that marriage is not unconditional. When you married your spouse, you promised to love each other in the face of circumstances beyond your control. The expectation is that the two of you will do everything in your control to make your marriage work. This means that you cannot harm your spouse intentionally and expect him or her to reciprocate with unconditional, consequence-free love.

In fact, completely disregarding reality can be dangerous, especially in the face of serious relationship problems such as abuse in marriage. It can impede a couple’s ability to deal with problems in the marriage.

For these reasons, the love that couples experience in marriage is best described as boundless love and not unconditional. Boundless love does not depend on external circumstances, and therefore, it endures even when external circumstances are against.

However, it does not disregard external circumstances.
The main difference between these two kinds of love is that boundless love acknowledges obstacles and strives to overcome them. It is based on the knowledge that your emotions towards your spouse may change depending on external circumstances but that doesn’t mean you don’t love him or her anymore.

You shouldn’t feel bad for having negative emotions such as anger towards your spouse. They are not an indication of how much you love your partner. They are just obstacles that you need to overcome on your way to a happy marriage. This is the meaning of love.

Genuine love doesn’t need to be blind or unconditional love. It doesn’t have to interfere with your ability to make rational decisions in the face of danger such as abuse. It also doesn’t mean that you have to suppress negative feelings
