Relax, CBN's coordinated release of money from our reserves may be a short-lived moral booster. The naira APPEARS to be gaining value but awon boiz know the real deal. Oil prices normally increase in the winter months when demand is highest. And what are we approaching? Anyway as for me sha (even if the thing like sef---make e go up, go down, roll for ground, tumble upside down come dance maradona join) I go still keep this dollar. ![]() |

Another negative publicity on Nigeria!!!!! I do sense resentment and condemnation over his act of desperation. Yet it astounds me the very same/or like is perpertrated as a subculture here in 9ja as in yahoo-yahoo, kidnappers, drug-trafficker, highway robbers, etc--- (trying to get rich by hook or crook). So why blame the fellow when a dwindling minority pursue an honest living? Truth is, faulting this to our corrupt and inefficient government system is a tired excuse and as life gets harder and harder for the poor masses these acts would be common. What is the legal recourse for this fellow in China as a foreigner? |

You see the system in America differs from Nigeria’s because our housing market for instance isn’t a major economic measure, and we dont do much credit on that regard. Needless to say we are actually doing quite well in this area. However, Nigeria's over-dependence on crude oil supply makes our economy solely reliant on the state of this market. Here is this for a thought-----a barrel of oil which sold for $150 last year now sells at an estimable $45. Funnily, this oil is globally traded in US dollars, meaning for you to conduct business in this area you have to have the American currency. This to me spells a double whammy for us------American in recession, so also is there a dip in price for crude oil. |

Let’s face it, economic indicators globally are deeply troubling and the recent devaluation of the naira is no good sign at all. My worry in our country is the financial sector, particularly the banking industry. We all know last year stock prices plummeted for most banks (e.g. Zenith, First and PHB all reported new 52 week lows for 2008) and speculations are that the downtrend may be sustained for a while. Would the implementation of federal government bailout packages like the US system work in Nigeria? This would imply capping incentives to bank CEOs, government taking over the losses, encourage more consumer spending, etc. While I am no economist, I think I know Nigeria and would say it would be a hard sell without accountability, plus most systems in Nigeria work more efficiently under privatization than under government-controlled basis. However, on a side note, imagine, if the stimulus package was utilized even by certain banks in the US to throw parties, what do you think would happen in our owambe-system? Personally, I’ld brace up for insolvency (for me, this involves the conversion of personal funds to the dollar until the naira stabilizes) it’s all a matter of time. I anticipate mergers especially from the new generation banks in the near future but the cookie looks definitely crumblin real soon. We need radical intervention from a few smart economists now!!! |

@IGWE. Y'all love that Space needle in Seattle, WA Visited friends at Queen Anne during a trip from Nigeria and toured the Pike place market (good fresh fish), Safeco field----finally winded up clubbing at the Bohemian. I love the city besides the steep downtown area. IGWE_USA:Best weather It is said that the constant rain in Seattle is the reason behind the high suicide rates for the city. |
@ poster. As you already know, hotel rates at Manhattan are quite steep. The Waldorf would set you back 250 dollars per night (N40,000) easy. Even the rat-infested Holiday Inn downtown could run up to $150/night with bed and breakfast----and do expect even higher prices in the weekends. I'ld recommend that you search for decent hotels outside Manhattan, prolly Upper Westside or the Bronx like the Pod, the HoJo, Best Western or even Tony's Place at the Bronx. I know they got a room for $75/ night (N16,000). Use the subway to save money on taxi fares. Here is a link to some of the hotels in the area with their prices. Hope this helps. http://www.hotels.com/processIndexSearch.do?destination=&acDestinationId=E29269D3-E953-42DF-9B63-1EF50F27196F&displayAd=false&PSRC=G21&mcid=G21.G287005679.hotel%20Bronx.exact&gclid=CLvasrL1_5gCFQrAGgodIHEPng |
This comes as an interesting news. ![]() N7,000 from Lagos to Abuja. Wow, go ahead Aero for leading the way!!! I also took the liberty of checking out the round trip prices from Lag to Abj and noticed Arik fare goes for N39,000 (N 19,500 each route), Dana is asking N32,400 (N16,000 each route), Chanchangi N38,000 (N19,000 each), Afrijet N28,000 (N14,000 each) while Virgin cost N30,000 (N15,000 each). This translates into an average 50% reduction in airfares flying Aero in comparison to the other domestic airlines. The only foreseeable problem is with their reservations department, as one has to have an Intersitch or Visa Card to book a flight. Now I am of the opinion that due to the phobia of identity theft and internet fraud prevalent in the country, passengers may be hesistant to divulge important banking information or personal data over the internet. (Learn from the recent GTB security breach) While I totally embrace Aero's marketing strategy to secure more passengers, I also purport they integrate a platform that accomodates booking of flights without credit/ smart cards. I think this would be a win-win situation for most passgengers. |

The scam is very possible and it's perpertuated by another brand of "yahoo yahoo" fraudsters. Usually emails of such content goes to the junk mail. However the idea is to lure in few wide-eyed, internet-crime naive, old-school computer users. I read these emails sometimes and I just laugh because some really do sound convincing. Perhaps an email-tracker might be suggestive. Too much palava-----check all SPAM or DELETE. |

All the qualities already mentioned are good----but it all boils down to a woman's personal preference or idea of what "husband material" means to her. Needless to say that I did observe our female respondents here (perhaps out of culture or the inherent perception that they would be viewed in a different light) convieniently skipped the quality concerning handling business between the sheets. Ladies una no try o, abeg what is husband material to you? The "dowda the sexy guy" character or the "honey I am tired and have to go to work in the morning" persona? Hurries and leaves room quickly |
Imagine the idea of purchasing a brand new laptop for less than N1500. While I wouldn't dare compare a N1,500 laptop to that of a N150,000, I honestly think India is slowly proving to be a competitor in the global sale of telecommunications infrastructure. India is poised to unveil the ultimate in credit-crunch computing: a 500 rupee (£7) laptop. A government-developed prototype, due to be shown for the first time tomorrow, will mark the most ambitious attempt yet to bring computers to the developing world and to bridge the "digital divide" between rich and poor. It is also the latest example of ultra-cheap engineering to emerge from the sub-continent. India has already given the world a 100,000 rupee (£1,420) car, the Tata Nano, and a super-basic £10 phone — goods that are now expected to find favour among relatively affluent Westerners as the global economic downturn bites. However, the launch of a viable computer that costs less than most paperback books would herald a startling new era in thrifty manufacturing. The Indian laptop, which has been on the drawing board for at least three years, will be the centre of attention at the launch of India's new National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology, a scheme to boost learning in rural areas through the internet. It comes as an answer to the One Laptop per Child project (OLPC) led by Nicholas Negraponte, the American scientist, which set out to produce a computer for $100. The US venture ran into problems when large companies including Intel, the biggest chip manufacturer, refused to co-operate. As a result, the OLPC laptop will cost closer to $200. In the light of Mr Negroponte's experiences, experts have suggested that India's plans for an even cheaper machine are unrealistic and details of what exactly will be unveiled tomorrow are scant. Arstechnica.com, the technology blog, said: "Can India do it? The inner philanthropist hopes so, but the realist who buys technology says, 'No way'." The website said that the prices of current computer component prices are simply too high to make a £7 laptop. The screen for the OLPC laptop alone was estimated to cost about £20 per unit by analysts at Merrill Lynch, the US bank. "India's $10 price hopes appear to be nothing more than pure fantasy," Arstechnica.com concluded. An Indian government official confirmed that the 500 rupee laptop plans will be announced tomorrow but refused to give further details. Officials had previously said that the cost of the machine was currently working out at about £14 each, but would come down if the product was mass produced. Plans to cut the price to the bone appear to hinge on the use of domestic technology. The laptop is the result of cooperation between several of India's elite technology institutions, including the Vellore Institute of Technology, scientists at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Semiconductor Laboratory, a part of India's Space Department. http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/technology/article5639463.ece |

Civilization is the distance man has placed between himself and his excreta. ~Brian Aldiss Following this train of thought when the word “civilized” is used to describe a city like Lagos (even as a true Lagos bobo myself), I humbly beg to differ. You name it; Isolo, Mile 12, Festac, Ajegunle, Ikeja, Mushin, Ojota, Island, etc, they all share a unifying denominator; the same noticed in the slums of Harlem or Peckamp – an indelible mark of the ghetto---some whitewashed as in Ikoyi or Victoria Island. No be Lagos? However, Lagos also serves paramount purpose for people with bigger dreams amidst the apparent nothingness thereof. It exhumes the inseparability of olokpa (policemen) from ashewo (ladies of the night), agberos (street urchin) from “yahoo yahoo” boys (fraudsters), even politicians from thieves, so much to say that if you are in Lagos you need to shine your eyes well well. All man wan chop o. ![]() Ironically, this is the very essence of civilization in a different perspective “to raise from barbarism to an enlightened stage of development” (American Heritage Dictionary, 2003) which in my contention isn’t remotely defined to any given conurbation in Nigeria. Thus saying, one needs not the “Lagos affiliation” to be civilized. In far away parts of our blessed country our brothers and sisters are also struggling against the forces ---making it big time, "civilized" without the Lagos affiliation. |
