Ikwerre at no time in history ever identified as Igbo.

Ikwerre in 1958 before independence, was at Willinks commission along with other minority ethnic groups to demand that they did not want to remain in the same region with Igbo people. In 1965 two years before the war, Ikwerre people made what is today called 'the Rumuomasi declaration' where they also clearly stated that they are not Igbo. At the onset of the war, Ikwerre leaders were among the minority ethnic groups that sent a delegation to Ojukwu to make it clear that their desire for a separate region from Igbo people had not changed. Ikwerre has never being Igbo before, during and after the war. You can only continue fabricating stories but it is only only your igbo people that will buy as it it can not change anything.

Nobody is saying that Igbo people residing in Rivers State can or should not celebrate in Portharcourt but you cross the line when your national body go to another man’s territory to celebrate your ‘fallen heroes’ while also calling the place your ‘Igboland’. This issue of Ikwerres being Igbo should be laid to rest. If a people chose to deny their ancestry for whatever reason best known to them, then let them be. Not all histories are accurate. They could be right about their Benin ancestors or wrong. But that's bygone. At the present, they claim not to be Igbos. The Igbos should respect that decision and move on. This is 2023. Unless of course, they're trying to lay claims to oil wells and a mega city which is at best a dream. But the Igbos should rest in peace. Leave Aniocha, anioma, Obubra, Ikwerre, Asaba, Ogba, everyone that denies roots with them the hell alone. They should ask themselves what wrong they've done for people to be distancing themselves rather than associating.

The truth is that Ikwerre never identified nor traced their ancestry to Igbo so the issue of ‘denying ancestry’ doesn’t even exist. It is Igbo people that have been peddling this ‘denying ancestry’ BS.

It is even some Igbo people that I have heard that claim to have migrated from Ikwerre like the Awara and some Ngwa people so their ancestry should be Ikwerre and not the other way round. There are similarities in some Ikwerre dialects with some Igbo dialects, but it doesn’t give Igbo the right to claim that Ikwerre speak ‘their language’ or are Igbo speaking’. How about they being ‘Ikwerre speaking’?

All over the world there are similarities in languages even in Nigeria. In the North, many ethnic groups up to the Tiv people share similar words with the Hausa but you never see the Hausa people forcing their identity on them. A tribe called Gwandara trace their lineage to Hausa but today are a totally different ethnic group and the Hausa people respect that. But Igbo people think they have the right to tell people who they are or should be.

Ikwerre along with the other minority groups in the South together told the British government before independence and the Federal government after independence that they didn’t want to remain in the same region with Igbo people. They wouldn’t do that if they were Igbos. When Igbo people were running and pillaging the defunct Eastern regional government, Ikwerre people still didn’t identify as Igbo. The truth is that many of them don’t even see Ikwerre as Igbo. Ikwerre people suffered the same fate like other minorities in their hands during the war but chose to move on while they are the ones that keep fabricating stories and dishing out half truths and outright lies every day and night, feeding their children with diets of hatred for Ikwerre people. It is only when they want to do their biafra that they start forcing their identity on others thinking it gives them the right to include them in their imaginary country regardless of wether they are consulted or not.

They couldn’t do that in 1967 when they were the only ones with guns which they used to kill and incarcerate many Ikwerre elites. Now in 2023 every one now has access to guns and other firepower, they are thinking they could do it. Intact, they can’t even attempt most of the atrocities they committed against Ikwerre people before and during the war in 1967. Let them keep foooling themselves.

All these people have different dialects they speak, some even harder to understand than the Ikwerre dialect. So how many times do wait for them to confirm being Igbo before you class them as Igbo and on what basis are they Igbo?

In general Igbo, father is "Nna". Ikwerres call it "Nda". In my dialect from Anambra, we call it "Npa". Only one alphabet changes . So who is Igbo snd who is not?

Wether Ngwa, Abakiliki, Abiriba or whoever is Igbo or not is not for me to say. If they describe themselves as Igbo, then I refer to them as Igbo. People tell you who they are and not you telling others who they are or you think they should be. Some dialects of Ikwerre language may have similarities to Igbo like there are among many other ethnic groups like Hausa, Tiv, Gwandara, Jokun, Chamba, etc but no tribe has a right to force their identity on others.
