BusinessNaira Weakens To 917 Per Dollar - Bloomberg by Treadway(op): 6:46am On Aug 10, 2023
Nigerian Naira Drops to Record as Black-Market Dollar Rate Soars

Naira weakens to 917 per dollar on the street on Wednesday

Official and black-market exchange rates part ways once more

The Nigerian naira extended its slump in black-market trading as the nation’s dollar shortage deepened two months after the central bank moved to a more flexible exchange rate to encourage inflows.

The currency of Africa’s biggest crude oil producer weakened to 917 naira per dollar, compared with 900 naira the day before, according to Umar Salisu, a bureau de change operator who tracks currency data in the nation’s commercial capital. Banks are unable to come up with the dollars to meet demand, and buyers are increasingly turning to the black market, widening the gap between the official exchange.

We warned and warned, but y'all didn't listen. The chimps up there have learnt nothing from 2015/2016 when Buhari made this same shitty call to remove subsidy and float naira in one fell swoop in a country like Nigeria. Now they have successfully FAILED, yet again. A move from officiall/parallel rates of 450/720 to 750/1000(in a few days) is a very successful FAILURE. Smh

No such thing as 'unbearable hardship' as far as Nigerians are concerned. Suffering to whatever degree is very much bearable.

justwise:
You are just speaking in tongues which is very common when church-goers want to deflect from the real issue.

You agreed that Christians can commit sin but a pastor who committed sin is not a Christian?
committing sin is different from actually propagating false teachings with the sole aim of misleading people (who are empty and stupid). If you have ever read the Bible you would know the term anti-christ. You would know that IT is already doing a great job deceiving many, even the 'elect' as foretold as the Bible put it. You would know the warning that states that many will come in the end time who are wolves in sheep clothing with false teachings. You would also know that even the devil himself gan gan uses even correct scripture in a context to deceive and mislead eg what he tried to do with Jesus after fasting 40days in the wilderness. But you don't know. I do know you will argue and come with a weak comeback per usual, and further assert that you are a 'Christian'.

Lol

The guy that killed himself was empty and stupid, despite his supposed brilliance. And that isn't talking Ill of the dead cos the dead is just another log of wood. It would have been nice if he didn't make himself so cheaply disposable, no different from a suicide bomber, only thankfully he didn't take anyone along with him in his blind folly. He chose his way, and well it is now between him and his maker. We all here will have a moment with our maker pretty soon too.

lol.

Let me expatiate in my own way. I am a Christian, there are also Muslims, as well as a whole lot of other religious adherents.

They are adherents because they are expected to adhere to some ways/teachings/concepts/rules etc most of which are documented in books/some form of literature.

As Christians, we have a book called the Bible, as others have theirs. In the Bible there is the old and new testament. In the old there are a lot of crazy stuff that happened, but in the new most of that have been done away with due to the coming of Jesus Christ.

The Muslims have their Koran, but not new and old. Most of the teachings are unchanged. With the others, I can't comment because I dont know enough to comment on them.

Now, if a Muslim kills 30 people because he wants to Bleep 70 virgins in the afterlife, he is considered a Muslims still because it has a religious backing, even though it doesn't have a legal backing.

The term Christian came to be after Christ left, certainly not in the old testament where some Cray Cray things happened and are documented. Christ came and said he is the WAY, and so Christians are those who have chosen to follow that WAY. Therefore, even if you identify as a Christian, you are not a Christian if you don't follow the way! Just like a woman that identifies a man is still not a man!

So like the poster you quoted said and I affirm, the muslim suicide bomber that killed 30 people had the backing of what his books taught him (though twisted), but someone who does that and claims to be a Christian has failed cos there is no backing at all. Jesus Christ never exemplified that, encouraged that, or required that while he lived and after he died AND RESURRECTED, not him nor his disciples.

A man who identifies as a woman is not a true woman, as no true woman has a XY chromosome, so you see the no true Scotsman example doesn't apply in every case.

Introduction

In light of the recent natural catastrophes in Chile, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) reminds Chileans of U.S. immigration benefits available to eligible Chilean nationals upon request.

USCIS understands that a natural catastrophe can affect an individual’s ability to establish or maintain lawful immigration status. In addition to the March 10 Update, the following Questions and Answers address temporary relief measures available to nationals of Chile.

Questions and Answer

Q1. I am a Chilean national and cannot return to Chile at this time due to the earthquake. My allowed time to stay in the United States is expiring or about to expire. What are my options? Can I work during my stay in the US?
A1. If you wish to change or extend your nonimmigrant status, you may request an extension if you meet the existing criteria for your specific nonimmigrant category. If you are a B-1 or B-2 visitor, you may apply for a six-month extension on the basis that the events of Feb. 27, 2010 earthquake and its aftermath make you unable to return to Chile at this time. Although B-1 and B-2 visitors may receive an extension under these special considerations, they are not authorized to work in the United States. Normally, an extension application must be filed before the authorized stay expires. According to existing guidelines, USCIS may accept applications for change of status or extension of stay after the period of authorized admission has expired. No waiver of this filing fee is available.

If you are a Chilean national and wish to receive special consideration for a late filed extension or change of status application, you must include evidence with Form I-539 that you were unable to return to Chile before the February 27 earthquake. If you were in lawful, nonimmigrant status on February 27, you will be excused for filing late up to May 27, 2010. After May 27, 2010, eligibility for delayed filing will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Q2. I am a Chilean national granted parole to enter the United States temporarily, but I am unable to return to Chile due to the earthquake and my parole has expired or is about to expire. What are my options? Can I work during my stay in the US?
A2. If you are a Chilean national who has already been paroled into the United States, you may apply for an extension of your parole (“re-parole”), by making an InfoPass appointment at your local USCIS field office. The length of the extension is at the Director’s discretion, but normally will not exceed six months. To qualify for re-parole, you will need to demonstrate that you were or are currently prevented from returning to Chile before the expiration of your current or last authorized parole. You will also need to present a genuine, expired or unexpired Form I-94, which contains an expiration date between February 27, 2010 and May 27, 2010.

Once your parole has been extended, you may apply for employment authorization by filing Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization. For instructions on how to apply, please refer to the filing instructions on the Form I-765.

Q3. I am a Chilean national granted advance parole to travel outside of the United States and cannot return to the United States from Chile due to the recent natural disasters, and my allowed time is expiring or about to expire. What are my options?
A3. Due to disruption of consular services following the earthquake, and in recognition of the humanitarian needs of affected individuals, an automatic extension of advance parole until May 27, 2010 is granted to those aliens, who are currently in Chile and who are outside of the United States if their advance parole authorization, Form I-512, Authorization for Parole of Aliens into the United States, expires between Feb. 27, 2010 and May 27, 2010. Ports of entry have been instructed to accept these auto-extended Form I-512s. Affected individuals do not need to bring any additional documentation with them to the airport.

Q4. I am a Chilean national F-1 student currently enrolled in school in the United States. Due to the recent natural catastrophes in Chile, I can no longer cover the cost of my education. What are my options? Can I work during my stay in the United States?
A4. If your family in Chile is funding your studies, you may be eligible for work authorization based on severe economic hardship. According to the regulations at 8 CFR 214.2(f)(9)(II)(C) and (D), F-1 academic students may request off-campus employment authorization based on severe economic hardship caused by unforeseen circumstances beyond their control, such as changes in the financial condition of their source of support. If your family is encountering difficulties with funding your studies in the United States due to the recent earthquakes in Chile, you may apply for employment authorization based on severe economic hardship. To qualify, you must establish that: a) you have been an F-1 academic student for at least one full academic year; b) you are in good academic standing and carrying a full course load; and c) employment authorization is needed to avoid severe economic hardship.

You will need to obtain a recommendation from your Designated School Official (DSO). That recommendation must be placed on your Form I-20. Once you obtain this recommendation, you must file Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, with your properly endorsed Form I-20, according to the filing instructions on the form. For Form I-765, you may apply to have the fee waived due to your inability to pay. For guidance on fee waivers, please visit www.uscis.gov/feewaiver.

Q5. I am a Chilean national whose case is pending with USCIS. I need my case expedited due to the earthquake in Chile. What are my options?
A5. Given the need for immediate relief, USCIS will expedite certain applications and petitions. Standard requirements for security checks remain in place under expedited procedures.

If a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident requests expedited processing of a Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative, the case will be expedited where a visa number is readily available.

Chilean nationals with benefit applications pending in the United States may need to travel quickly for emergent reasons and will need to apply for advance authorization for parole to return to the United States. USCIS will expedite the Form I-131, Application for Travel Document, in such cases and where we have been advised of the emergent need to travel.

Q6. Where can I find more information about immigration relief benefits?
A6. For more information on USCIS humanitarian programs, visit www.uscis.gov or call the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283.
gerrard59 has shared some points, which are 100% correct as evidenced below. Why people find it difficult to just check things to be sure if they are true/fact or not is just baffling. As I like argument rish, I would never badger on unless I'm 100% sure of what I am saying. In the screenshot you yourself shared, you can see that inflation for FY 2022 was stated to be 11%, contrast this to Nigeria's inflation figures for the same period, and learn a thing or two. Then again, I have a hunch learning likely isn't your forte either, so just stick to Ebola topics and Obi posts in the politics section, and continue to stick to that path of least resistance. You need to have visited a country or two, and read a book or two to comment on topics like this one.

ivandragon:
As much as a protest/strike is undesirable at this time, the FG has also failed in its duties & responsibilities.

The manner of the subsidy removal is fraudulent, thoughtless & a sign of government's failure to be responsible to its duties.

Two key reasons for removing fuel subsidy are smuggling & the corruption by a few.

Now, what the government should have done first, in my opinion, are:

1. Do more to secure the borders. Invest in technology tracking & surveillance systems. Sanction security officials through whose sectors fuel is smuggled out.

2. Go after the cabal in the fuel subsidy sector. The private & public characters involved must made to answer for thier alleged crimes & the proceeds confisticated. They cannot be allowed to go scot-free with thier loot & Nigerians made to suffer.

Thier cases should be fast tracked.

3. Increase the price of fuel to 250-300 band. This will take a bit of pressure off government in the interim pending when it can fully sanitise the fuel subsidy regime. This price will still be affordable for majority of Nigerians without the need of providing palliative.

4. Review downwards associated costs/charges/taxes that add to the price of fuel in Nigeria.

5. Immediately undertake a priority revamp of the refineries to get local production up to at least 70% in the first instance.

6. Institute a clear policy to encourage modular refineries & monitor thier development.

7. The confiscated properties of fuel subsidy bandits should be invested in maintaining the refineries, supporting modular refineries, investing in tracking technology for smuggled fuel & paying for subsidies (if any).

That subsidy should go is not the issue, but the process of its removal must be transparent, fair & well-thought-out.

PS
Obi's team are arguing the wrong point.
Leave that 7point agenda.

The only illegality we need to prove is Voting Manipulations...at every level.
We should prove that more people truly voted for Peter Obi.

We all knew the other things against Tinubu, yet didn't challenge it in court before election...una wan put judges for wahala?!
Do the right thing at the right time without chaos.
I'll respond to this. What you advised ie. 'Prove that more people voted for him, and voting manipulation' is exactly what APC were hoping he would do. Thankfully, he didn't. I have seen many here claiming he came third, when anyone who was not in a coma and witnessed that election knows clearly that he either came first or second due to the bulk of his votes that were suppressed/stolen by the APC majorly in three states, Lagos, Rivers, Plateau. Now if we go by math, I can accept and adduce that he likely came second, cos even if they award him the rightful votes he had stolen from him, it still likely won't be up to the 2million gap APC gave the LP, majorly cos not only did APC steal some LP votes, they also padded theirs in their strongholds (the padding I can't fault much cos who won't pad in their strongholds). So that is why, they are arguing voting manipulation but not basing their argument SOLELY on those numbers. In short, what they are trying to do is to prove that he met the constitutional spread of 25% in 2/3.

E.g. in my polling unit the results changed, what was posted was different from what was counted when we left that night, we (progressive youths) only waited to count presidential, we didn't wait for the Senate and HOR cos it was starting to rain. The change was a reduction of 10votes for LP and an addition of 42 for the APC! We believe they added back the voided votes, cos there were a lot of voided votes for the APC, all those baba and mama 70, most of them didn't thumbprint correctly, and were rightly counted as void votes, but they added it back after we left, imagine that! You may say it isn't much, but replicate that in all PUs in Oyo and you see it is. I think what the lawyers are trying to achieve is a re-run, cos in law it isn't about what you know to be true but what you can prove. If he only based it on the numbers like you advised, he wouldn't have been able to prove it in ALL PUs across the country which is what would have been required of him by law. LP didn't have enough agents, so proving that will be impossible. So, the smart thing is to stick to the things they can prove.

1. VOTING manipulations in the places there was overwhelming proof to support the claim, esp the state's I mentioned earlier which they brought to court. So expect the numbers alloted to him to increase

2. Prove that they met the minimum 25% spread

3. Prove that the APC didn't meet the constitutional requirements of 25% in the FCT.

4. Prove that the APC candidate are not qualified due to all those legal hogwash like double nomination, drug case etc.

The end game is smart though, stick to what you can prove, and hopefully overwhelm them with enough facts that no matter their leanings they'll likely have to rule for a re-run. This is a long stretch as na naija we dey, but it was the only good shot they had. If they had just stuck to the numbers, the thing go don end since in the favor of the APC.

That said, to join to what you said, I think anyone still protesting for Nigeria is foolish. If the Good Lord, allowed what happened during that election to happen, then whatever will come out from the tribunal na im we suppose dey wait for. Whatever it is we take am as say e please God to allow am ni and face front, knowing we tried our best and did our part. I will never ever protest for the good of this country ever again. Your response shows that you are a kid that is yet to know life. Asking for help is not lack of dignity. If you are doing great as you claimed to be and not known to be stingy you would have had one or two people among your friends that have fall on hard times reaching out to you for help.
I was poor and many of my friends were poor. We came from very humble background. Some of them are directors and executives today and many are still struggling to makes ends meet. It does not means they don't have self respect, it is life. Lucky you for the challenge you have in life is a cashflow problem, it does not make you better than us. As you age you will understand that asking for help from one friend does not makes one to be a beggar. Yoruba said it is who you sleep in the same bed with that you will disturb when you roll on the bed.
here is an example of my "lie"
your rebuttal was way too simplistic and inchoate (I had worse adjectives earlier, but decided to show decorum and modified it appropriately). It actually makes me much better, cos unlike you and your friends I take responsibility for my life, decisions, actions and inactions. Moreso, the core premise of your futile rant and others like you sharing that lie and my response earlier is that you ALL implied your friends are begging you for money today simply because they didn't japa like you yesterday, and not based on the fact that life can turn at anytime for anyone anywhere!! See the obvious difference?? Well newsflash, it isn't cos of that, upon scrutiny it is majorly cos of deficit in common sense. Barring a major illness or morbidity that you have no control over that can wipe out anyone's finances, fix culpability where it is.

If we go back in time now, the baba did it for his children, children naa lo wa fall hand bayi. The wahalur in this life is too much, I say again.

lol you Dey para oooo Chief. When I say appreciative I don’t mean appreciative of tinubu or even the political class, I mean appreciative of the common man on the street. If I move to the east I will try to blend in and be very appreciative and will respect their customs. I will not be following them to drag land or their politics or be calling them scratch face hydraulic soup ewedu gobblers. So I am not saying be appreciative of tinubu but of the peoples culture and customs . You don’t go somewhere to be competing with them, you go to blend in with them.
alright. I misunderstood that part niyen.

Next time you see my post, just jump and pass (keep scrolling). The toxicity in me will continue as far as and as long as evil and wickedness of men exist. My conscience motivates me to posts; I'm not motivated by how I want to be perceived.
And as you may have observed, I don't know you. So clearly, your opinion as to how I express myself didn't count then... wouldn't count now. I'm not sorry.

Whether your jagaban was sent to jail or not is not my business, to be honest. I'm just worried about the fact that you know so much about this man and you didn't join his lawyers and spokespersons to deny "the $400k" forfeiture?
well said bro.

Lagos where virtually all the major firms have been headquartered before dem born Tinubu papa na him dem say he build. Megacity wey no even get tap water. The thing wey pain me pass is how we see the truth and fail to say it. Instead bros Sukkot say we should be appreciative. Appreciate a man whose only source of immense wealth is holding and milking a state since 1999, sotey his entire family get straws wey dem dey use suck am, openly o, not even hidden. We should be grateful for rogues that have taken us backward 100 years and make us have to toil and improvise and struggle needlessly sotey everyone say make we 'japa', and we wey no wan japa are perceived as people with no future ambition. All this talk of dollar, as of 2014 I had visited 3 countries self-sponsored, while my company then sponsored another 3 as a gift for meeting sales targets. I took my wife (then girlfriend) to Dubai self-sponsored in 2015, I never even marry am oooo. I bought a watch for fun for 1k dollars, I was buying items on Amazon in thousands of dollars sometimes twice a year (mostly for resale)

Which among all those things can I conveniently do now?? Even the company I left no fit do am, much less me an individual.

Wetin my peers back then get? Funny thing is, I wasn't really earning big money o....But now everybody is pressing calculator and shikini 20dols na 18k. Sotey people are advised to even be homeless in the anglo-west than be a boss in Nigeria. My friends overseas then didn't have what I had, no be mouth. Dem no dey press calculator for Jona time of 150 to a dollar. Except those with good jobs (of which I didn't know any) all of them blokes only had fine pictures to offer, ba kudi!!

But yea I should be appreciative that these bastards have made the country a desolate place in just 8 years, and are clearly on track to make the next 4-8years the worst ever. E Kare!. Cococandy and Sukkot go dey pity and help Nigerians. I no dey appreciative kan kan o. Na will power and brain I dey use eke out my living, no be say Naija support me or give me any thing, as dem take their subsidies I no even care, the only painful thing is it will certainly all still be stolen as it has always been and we all will witness it, and surely some will still defend it like they are defending Lagos as the city Tinubu supposedly built, like mile2 - IBA road revamp that has taken 18yrs now. Make una dey clap dey go o. We go see where the country go end laipe yi. The beautiful thing about time is that it passes very very quickly.

Lastly, I can only imagine what APC supporters would have said/done had PO made his personal company collect 20% of all revenue generated in his state from when he was governor till date, made his daughter the head of markets to collect revenue there too from then till this day, made one of his boys the head of garages to collect there too from then till this day, and planted his wife in the senate since 1999 amongst others...e for loud gan. Nigerians will utterly deserve whatever APC does to this country, as dem see even 100k votes, e mean say many people still need to learn a thing or two.

Racoon, why reposting Farook's monologues?? The guy only likes to sound intelligent, but really isn't. Yea, I get that the broken clock that he is, is right once or twice a day, but don't tell me you haven't noticed how literally every article from Farook is actually aimed to take a jab at Obi. Did you see him taking jabs at Atiku here? Look through the article and you will see that he isn't even knocking Tinubu. Whose name do you see prominently dissected there? Don't sleep on a bicycle else you are inadvertently furthering this sick man's agenda.

Be awake, be aware.

I left Nigeria at 29. I was working for one of the top federal parastatals and making good money. I worked many odd jobs for the first six years of my arrival before getting professional job. Even then, I never regret my decision leaving the country. Many of my former colleagues are calling me for help today.

Remember technology makes it possible to be making money in dollar while you are in Nigeria. What happen if things change in the next 10 years and you no longer have such opportunity?

I will suggest you safe your money and follow the part for legal immigration and you will not regret it.
you see that bolded line/lie, it is quite amazing how most of you japa geng on nairaland tend to use that line/lie, suggesting that y'all seem to be surrounded by people with low self esteem, or just so dim-witted that they can't manage their lives as adults. If all you guys have friends like that, na horrible bunch you dey roll with o. I brought in three cars at once sometime in 2021, and couldn't sell even one on time, so in no time I was pressed for funds, but even tho my account don red, I no get the mind to ask anyone for money, cos I am an adult with self-respect and dignity. I sold off a pair of brand new tires I had earlier bought and some other items in my store that I could let go off, as in I hauled them in my car and drove to the respective market areas where I could sell them and raised about 70k that day that kept me going till I sold one of the cars and got my millions back. Na una dey always seem to get friends wey na beggars and financial illiterates...or as you claim were doing fine but turned beggers cos they stayed in Nigeria and now una wey travel na im dey feed them.. ludicrous!

Like 15 of una don comment with this same line/lie of having hungry friends that were doing okay before but now begging you for crumbs. Def na kindergarteners be ya friends, def not adults with any common sense or wisdom bo ti wu ko kere mo! Jeez!

Pls pls and pls. We need to educate Nigerians. There was no 1.95trn revenue. It was just cheap propaganda planted by APC through the cable. No other media house took the story.
The AGF only declared 1.15 trillion as gross revenue not any 1.95trn.
