Shows the cylinder bores of the engine block. Bore sizes are still within tolerable limits.

Timing chain exposed, readying it for TDC before removal. Extreme care must be taken, less the valves gets bent.

The catalytic converter without anything in it. owner would vet that replaced subsequently.

Crankshaft assembly, with its journals scoured. Replaced with new genuine Honda journal bearings

Spark plugs, and ignition coils fully immersed in engine oil. Tips of the plugs shows some form of caking.

Honda accord 08 rebuilt engine

The main purpose of writing this piece is to intimate people that, asides Toyotas, and others, HONDA BRANDED vehicles can be rebuilt, to standard.

There are a lot of skepticism about engine overhauls.

Some people, see it as a waste of time, and resources. They argue, why not just replaced an engine that's having a major mechanical problems, such as seizures, or engine knocks, etc.

Almost everything on an automobile, can be repaired, without entirely replacing it.

In this piece of writeup, I'd be sharing my experiences on the overhaul of a Honda Accord, 2008.


CASE STUDY

Vehicle: Honda accord 2008
Transmission system: Automatic
Engine configuration: 4cylinder SOHC
Engine capacity: 2.0L

CUSTOMER'S COMPLAINTS
Engine makes a knocking noise; vehicle can't ascend hilly terrain; engine oil consumption is significantly high (he keeps topping it almost everyday).


THE FIX-INSPECTIONS
1. Blue smoke coming out of the exhaust tailpipe.
2. Confirmed engine has no compression enough.
3. Engine make was an R series lineups, which were incorporated in Crv, civics(2013- present), and accords(08).

These R series engines from Honda corporation are in 1.6/1.8/2.0L configurations, with the 2.0L, meant for performance, and fuel economy.
The 1.6/1.8L are basically meant t for fuel economy.
4. All spark plugs were caked, as a result of excessive engine oil burnings.
5. Scoured crankshaft, crankshaft journal and camshaft bearings.
6. Excessive worn camshaft top cylinder journals, and a rocker arm assembly.

1. All piston rings, metal bearings for the crankshaft, and camshafts were all replaced with new genuine Honda only parts.

2. During such rebuilds, endeavor to have all the rubber seals(O-seals, crankshaft/camshaft seals replaced).

3. Ensure the top cylinder and engine block surfaces are not warped(bent).
That would prevent pressure leaks during the compression strokes.
Get a machinist to help with checking that out before assembling the engine.

4. Don't use synthetic oil to break in the rings after overhauls.
I use 20W-50 to get the rings seated properly, then after a month or 1000miles, I get the engine oil replaced, and switch to its recommended engine oil(5w20).

Note: Allowing the engine to idling excessive for a long time, those nothing to seat the rings properly as some mechanics are meant to believed.

Allowed the engine to idling for a while, then go for a test drive.

Simulate all driving kinds of conditions (aggressive, and in gridlocks).

5. Hand over vehicle to owner, and request that vehicle must be returned after a month, for engine oil change.

There are clients over here that we'd had their vehicles rebuilt(a Corolla is still in service, after 2017).

PS: Give your mechanic time to rebuild your engine; don't rush them(him).

that's the assembled engine, after I had overhauled the engine. everything runs like new now. it coughs out about 340hp. but I don't exceed 100-120km/hr on trips. I like the muscular nature of the car.

That's my M45

dru23: I bought mine Nigerian used. it depends on the person you're buying from. the guy I bought mine from, told me everything he had done on the car, ranging from oil changes, body repairs, etc. in fact, I bought the car as a none runner. the car had an overheating problem, when he was returning from ikoyi(work).
since I was a mechanic that can fix such vehicles, got it towed to my shop, dismantled everything on that car, got to the root of the overheating, and decided just to overhauled the engine once and for all.
so, it depends on how truthful a previous owner would want to reveal such info to you. we ha e guys that maintained their vehicles as at when due. not all Nigerian used vehicles are Scrab!

both are nice cars. Fx35 has a V6 setup, whilst the fx45 has a v8.

In terms of fuel consumption, I can't tell though. but my M45(VK45 engine), similar to fx45, does consume fuel, more in city driving than on journeys. main reason I got the car was because of its fuel economy on long distance trips.

you won't feel the fuel consumption on trips. but its in heavy traffic like Lagos, that it tells on you.
if you eventually go for the v8, you can plan your routes to avoid incessant traffic idling.
I like the sporty sound of the fx45/m45 so much.

mind you, the m45 I got is a sedan car.
ensure you don't joke with the transmission fluids.

I used only Nissan matin J atf for the gearbox.
I had to recently overhaul my engine. replaced all the rings, conrod, and journal bearings myself.
use the right oil for the engine, and you'd get more mileage out of the car.

fx45 are not problematic as people would insinuates. its just that people always have the notion that v8 must be a fuel guzzler.

get the right mechanic you trust to have that beast maintained, if you chose the 45!

I experienced exactly what you cited on Sunday.
The customs guys at OWO at Ireti unit, Ondo state, stopped us, while I was delivering a Nissan Xterra to a client in Abuja.
They alleged that our papers were faked, and they needed to impound the vehicle.
We pleaded, but they refused.
We were asked to pay #500k.
Finally, we settled for #200k, before they could allow us to leave, after delaying us for 3hrs.
These guys are syndicates.
They don't collect cash.
They have someone somewhere, that you make transfers to. Its only when they get an alert, that they'd allow you to leave.
That's how rotten those guys are.
The funny thing is that, the papers, where presented to us as genuine, by the dealer/agents.
During our interrogation by the custom's guys, they insisted they must speak with the dealer, and that the dealer must acknowledged FIRST, that the vehicle was a land smuggled vehicle.
During the conversations, the dealer still refused to admit.
That's how wicked some dealers are in Nigeria.

First things first here.
Here are some questions for you:
1. has the radiator fans being working before now?
2. how did the mechanic know that the fuses were bridged(shorted)?

Was there any electrical glitches you were experiencing that led him to recommend replacing those fuses in the engine fuselage?

Here's what you'd do:
1. ask the mechanic to have a rechecked of all the fuses he put in there.
It might be that he has mistakenly caused the radiator fan fuse to be shorted mistakenly, thereby leading to an open circuit in the fan circuits.

2. Whilst trying to replaced e some of the fuses, he may have mistakenly caused one of the fan relays to shift from its location (this would happen, if the slot in which the relay fits into, is worn).
Ask him to properly try pushing in the relays in their slots with little effort.

3. Do not ever agree to anyone that tells you to remove your car's thermostat.
The thermostat jeeps your engine's operating temperature at the recommended threshold, in order to effect efficient operation of the engine, and the fluids in the car.


I hole this piece of suggestion helps you sort out the problem.

PS: My bet on this is that is either he mistakenly placed a low amperage fuse in there.
Ensure the recommended fuses were replaced.
Don't use a 7.5A fuse where a 20A fuse is required.
If you do, you'd get an open circuit problems (fan won't power up!).

1. the capacity of that fuel pump is questionable.
You could try another pump.

2. the problem could be a restriction on a section of the fuel system : piping, or fuel pump casing is clogged.

Ask your mechanic to get another fuel pump, and test with(get a higher capacity. Probably a V6 since the vehicle is a 4cyl.

PS: Has your mechanic checked if fuel supplies to the fuel pressure pipe connected run the intake port of the carburetor?

@temmym4. Can you just let these people be? If they don't believe you, and that's possible to have any engine rebuilt to standard, then let it be.

Sometimes, only personal experiences can convince other people.

Anyone that tells you an engine can't be rebuilt, is either that person does not have e the expertise, or the person must have e being brainwashed that YOU MUST REPLACE AN ENGINE.

Factors that could only hamper engine rebuilds are,
1. lack of funds
2. incompetence (skills, and not following best practices).
3. myth widely held that such engines don't last.
4. not using original overhauling parts

Depending on what the customer wants, and what he can afford.

I have rebuilt Lexus, Highlanders (2gr, 3MZ etc) , Nissan infinity M45(V8), corollas, and even hybrid vehicles, that are still in service NOW.

My advice to anyone contemplating rebuilds, make sure your mechanic knows what he has doing.

Give them ample time to do the work.

Don't rush them.

My engine rebuilds have a duration of 1week.

Any body that tells you that your engine can't be rebuilt, is a big lie.

+1 to Ikenna. that's y we have OEM Larts, and all that.

I think the major concerns of people is just that they are scared if such tasks would last, and maybe, availability of genuine parts.

I have built lots of engines, ranging from even Honda pilots, rx330, and some corollas, that are still in service.

In your case, I'd say, it depends on what you decide.

It would sure be feasible, if there's that political will.
This would come with a cost though.
Are people willing to adjust to the changes when it comes knocking at their comfort zones?
Think about if such vehicles would be introduced in a place like Lagos.
Are people willing to endure the discomfort that normally occurs when cities and roads are replanned (have you heard of SMART CITIES before)? Can people withstand the demotions of their family houses to upgrade roads to smarter ones?
A lot of questions than answers here.

...and a + to the comments here.

One thing more for unsuspecting car owners.

1. If you want more ground clearance, you either upgrade your tyre size, or rim.

2. A higher spring could be fitted, if you intend maintaining your existing tyre and rim sizes.

But remember, fuel economy, and driveability might be affected.

Cutting, and welding of shocks, and/or springs (coils), is bad practice.

Doing that, you have already succeeded in shortening the lifespans of the shocks(that would cause you what you are currently facing now: buying a new one.

No! Its an M45 sport. Precisely, a VK45 engine design.
Almost the same engine in the fx45. Difference I've noticed with the engine cooling fan is that, the fan blade is hydraulically driven, as compared to the FX45 that uses either a normal viscous blade, or an electric fan motor.

Every other thing is the same.

That catastrophic events, occured, after Israeli air force had left Lebanese-Syria airspace.

Those deaths, would have being avoided, if the mullahs of Iran, weren't there trying to establish a foothold I. Syria.

Here's what I think they(the mullahs, and Syria) were expecting from Moscow.

They expected a harsher response from Moscow, but when it wasn't coming as expected, they kept mute.

Putin seems to be a very shrewd politician, who is in a complex environment, serving different interests(Turkey, Syria, Iran, and Israel).

They must have weighed the consequences of a retaliation against Israel.

Nissan/Murano vehicles to me, are cool.

From my experience, it appears Nissans are more somewhat ahead of the game in terms of complexity(pls don't ask me what that means).
I own an infinity V8 sedan, that I bought from a client of mine.

When I got the car, I replaced the existing transmission fluids in there, with ONLY Nissan recommended transmission fluid (Martin J), which costs a lot.

Have you ever wondered y those vehicles don't get transmission system problems abroad?

They use only recommended transmission fluids for replacement, and not any other one.

If you're considering buying that car, try as much as possible to give a competent mechanic only for the fixes.
