Agriculture › Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by Ttalk:
Yes the solution is here, we can now take a breath of relief from the economic downturn that is hitting every sector most especially the one that is affecting us as fish farmer.

In the past few weeks we have been hit with increase in the price of feed as well as unavailability of electricity to pump water into our ponds. Feed that was sold 16months ago at N3800 is now been sold at N7,000 and above nonetheless the price of fish has remain the same. Many newbie who depend on PHCN and gasoline generator to power their farm no longer find it funny. The increase in electricity tariff couple with almost zero supply of electricity has dealt a big blow to many farms, this has equally been compounded with filling stations staff who demand additional money from gullible farmers that only need fuel for his generator. Many filling stations bluntly denied selling fuel for farmers and the one who sell collect extra money while you only get half of what you paid for. No thanks to doctored dispensing meter by cunning fuel attendants.

Just as we are trying to cope with this harsh situation, the increment in price of fuel came in and a litre of gasoline jump from 87naira to 145naira.
Purchasing power of average Nigerian shrank as the economy goes into recession with 2 consecutive quarter giving negative signs. This is indeed a trying time for business people in Nigeria. Small scale businesses are folding up while the struggling ones are making huge loss. When the time get tough the tough gets going and it take a tough mind to venture into fish farm business in Nigeria where the business terrain is very rough.

NOW THE SURVIVAL PLAN:
This economic reality has led to the development of a means of generating power and feed production for individual farm that brings about the designing of 3 in 1 grinding, pelleting and power generating system for farm. The GPP Diesel Machine can now supply your farm with the electricity to power your farm as well as serves as production unit for your fish feed you only need to tap into this innovation and you will be relieved of unnecessary expenses. It will enable you to take control of your business and makes you have a foundation to excel in fish farm.

Here i unveil for the first time in our generation a powerful 3 in 1,multipurpose locally made machine that grind, pelletise and provide power supply to your farm

Thanks to Mr Robonski for creating this platform for us to interact. Also to those who bought into the 2 in 1 grinding and pelleting idea and others who have been encouraging us and to all members of this forum.

My appreciation to Mrs Pat from Federal Ministry of Agriculture for your support into this wonderful breakthrough, @Pearlyfish of nairaland you have been a wonderful woman, permit me to post your 3 in 1 GPP machine that we just completed.

Note: I will be available to answer questions pertaining to this project but all purchasing requests will not be answered on this forum so as not to derail progress of this educative thread. You can channel such question to my mail at goldgate2003@yahoo.com

My Oga @ Ttalk I've replied your mail.
Thank you
I have seen your mail, and i'm trying to get in touch with someone around your area who is into fingerlings production.

You dont have to come to my end for that small quantity of feed. There is a member i'm presently working on her 3 in 1 pelleting, grinding and power generating machine which would be ready by this Saturday. You can easily get your local feed supplyfrom her but before then get other things ready

Mr Enoch you've been doing wonderful job here, please i have 7.5HP diesel engine which i use for fish feed production. But since i used it mainly Saturdays i decided to buy alternator to it to power my two 1HP each pumping machine. One is submersible while the other is surface pump. I hope the engine will be able to power the two pumping machine for 10hours daily together with some energy bulb and one fan.

What type of alternator will be most suitable?

Will the engine power 3 -4 pumping machine in case of near future expansion?

What will be your opinion on this arrangement considering cost, fuel efficiency and durability?

What HP diesel engine will be suitable to power 3-4 pumping machine?

What is the price range of diesel generator that can power 4 1hp pumping machine, new and fairly used?

Do you have idea of pumping machine that requires lesser wattage for 100meter borehole?

Politics › Re: Fulani Herdsmen Invade Igbongun, Benue, Kill 15 by Ttalk: 2:18pm On Jun 01, 2016
ericuzor:
Again, suspected Fulani herdsmen on Monday invaded Igbongun community in Tsaav Ward of Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, killing five people.
Only last Sunday, the herdsmen struck in Tse Wankyor in the same Tsaav Ward and killed 10 and injured several others.
Yesterday’s incident brings the death toll from the two attacks to 15.
A source told The AUTHORITY that the armed herders numbering over 50 invaded the community through the neighbouring Kente settlement in Taraba State at 11pm on Monday and unleashed terror on the people with their sophisticated weapons.
He claimed that six motorcycles were carted away by the rampaging herdsmen.
The District Head of Tsaav, His Royal Highness (HRH) Joseph Ivuen, told The AUTHORITY that the attack was unwarranted because they have never had issues with the Fulani cattle rearers.

The monarch said that the community had been deserted for fear of further attacks and called on the Federal Government to provide a lasting solution to the continued invasion of Benue villages by the herdsmen.
The Chairman of Ukum Local Government Area, Hon. Simon Kachina, who confirmed the attacks, said that they were strange because the affected communities never had issues with the herdsmen and charged the authorities to intensify efforts towards ending such barbaric acts.
The council boss who gave the names of victims whose bodies had been recovered as Keryum Mku, Terkura Ajo and Terhemba Gwa, added that the search for others had continued.
Kachina said: “It is most unfortunate and the most worrisome aspect of these attacks lies in the fact that they are normally carried out during cropping season and for a local government whose economic mainstay is farming, the continued sacking of our people will not augur well for our economic survival. I am appealing especially to the Federal Government to put in efforts that will curtail the barbaric acts of these headsmen.”
The member representing Ukum, Logo and Katsina/Ala Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr. Emmanuel Udende, said that a public hearing into the continued attacks on Benue communities by the herdsmen had begun at the Lower House.
Through his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Jerry Iorngaem, who was at the ravaged community, the lawmaker urged his constituents not to resort to self-help.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Moses Yamu, confirmed the attacks.

Yeah bro, the main component is the diesel engine, this is the time to get the engine asap. The price in the market is increasing as a result of weak naira, and the price will continue to increase because many are looking in that direction already to power their houses and businesses. You can buy now and keep till when you are ready to install other units.
Agriculture › Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by Ttalk:
Farmer across the country is now faced with new challenge, not that the challenge has not been there but the recent hike in cost of PMS is aggravating the challenges of fish farmers most especially those that are running other type of pond system different from earthen pond.

The cost of energy in many concrete/plastic/taupaulin ponds is now ranked as number 2 after the cost of feeding which takes about 70% of the cost of production. A farmer who used to spent 60,000 on fuel before now to raise 1500 fish for 5months now incur 120,000 as cost of fuel, while farmer that stock 6000 would expend as much as 500,000 on fuel alone. This has made so many farmers gasping for breath as we continue to groan and pray to succeed under this harsh business condition.

What can we do to reduce the cost of energy?

How best should we design our farm to ensure minimum supply of power that will give us highest return?

What are the alternative energy source that are affordable for a farm of capacity of between 1,000 to 10,000?

Is it not cheaper at the long run to move away from PMS powered generator to Diesel power generator?

MY SUBMISSION:
1. Each farm should consider using diesel generator to power his farm and petrol generator should only serves as support
2. There should be more than one form of source of energy. i.e while use electricity to power, diesel generator should be used when there is not light.
3. Every farm should build reservoir tank, plastic or concrete to store water when there is electricity
4. Farm should not be shut down at night completely as water can be pumped and stored at night to be used the following day.
5. There should be a concerted effort to recirculate used water and ensure continuous supply of water
6. Combination of multiple water supply i.e 2-3 boreholes, borehole and well, stream/river, borehole and well

Finally, i want to say, it is possible use our 2 in 1 diesel powered grinding and pelletising machine to provide electricity to your farm with the help of alternator, making your diesel engine to perform multiple functions such as grinding of feedstuff, pelletising and powering your farm rather than using your generating set as a sole source of power. This is what i am presently working on and shall be unveiled to member when it is completed. My people, lets put heads together and share ideas, experience on how to take this business to next level. Your contributions, critiques and opinion is highly welcome.

Note: MY MOTIVE IS NOT TO MARKET OR PROMOTE ANY PRODUCT BUT TO SHARE WITH HOUSE LITTLE THINGS THAT CAN ADD VALUE TO OUR BUSINESSES

@examhall, try and sort your fish before you sell ooo. u also need an experienced farmer to help you make your first sale. buy a scale and use it. dont sell like lagos ppl, catfish is more expensive here in the east especially if you have the right size and right quantity. you can sell directly to market women since you just have 1500 fish. you can ask the people you buy feed from to help you with contacts of ppl dt buy in bulk.

@cleo, please inform her the current price in ihiala so that she have an idea what she is

Hello sir, thank you very much about ur inquest relating to the information I posted. Sir, I am not amazed that you may feel an FCR of about 0.5 with corresponding weight is not achievable in 2 months plus (so many people also think same). And that is one reason I posted this model. Also note that I am not talking about TABLE SIZE here, but rather MELANGE.

I think you should look at FCR holistically. The FCR is low for catfish at a younger age (fries, fingerlings, juvenile etc) when relative growth is higher. This is why u will notice that the quantity consumed at early stages is lower with relative higher growth than later. (Ceteris paribus)
Quality of feed, stocking density, seed quality, water and overall management are all factors than can influence FCR. These factors are actually variables and that is why as farmers we can never achieve the same result. (I think we should review FCR ones more on this thread).

The information I gave I didn’t demand a kobo from anyone, I don’t sell feeds either. And I did mention that it’s not a top secrete as far as I’m concerned. I am humbled to say it is a simple model that God has been using in helping a lot of farmers offline. I have different success stories and also few failed ones too. I will share those ones too so we can pick a thing or two.

It is good to always see things not just from a theoretical perspective alone. Sir, if u can achieve 1kg and above between 4months to 5 months, why do you think it’s impossible to achieve between 300g and 500g in 2.5? (Ceteris paribus). Honestly speaking if by 2.5 months you don’t have an average of 300g to 500g from ur stocked group then u should critically examine ur practice and find out what is missing before it’s too late.

Someone just posted his achievements using Ziegler feed which in all honesty is one of my favorite. But due to cost and sometimes availability, this is why I always try out new feeds; document there results so as to help anyone I’m dealing with no matter ur budget. To be successful in this business, I think we should go beyond seeing ourselves as internet farmers. I’m sure some might think I was going to post something outside the ordinary like an ‘abrakadabra’ (lol). But I did mention that it’s not cheap, it’s not new but can guarantee success in a short period. Regards.
From what i have experienced, a good seed from jumbo add 75gram and above every week, while the not too good add 50gram every week. This was achieved in my last stocking where i used local feed of 25%fishmeal and about 35% crude protein. So, catfish can add 300gram and above in one month from jumbo stage provided farm management practises is observed.

As a matter of fact i have decided use minimum of 75gram growth every week to measure growth performance in my farm henceforth. Any fish that does not attain 75gram in a week will be sorted and sold as melange so as to give room for the ones that are performing well

On the issue of FCR, i quite agree with you that fish has lower FCR from fingerlings to jumbo, what am yet to confirm is whether feed quality i.e high CP has a role to play and management requirement such and water, space, oxygen and ammonia discharge of smaller fish doesn't pose as damage as adult fish.

Similarly, the digestibility of carbohydrates component in adult fish feed could be a hindrance to achieving low FCR because unless carbohydrates are cooked in feed formulation fish can hardly digest 60% of its inclusion.

I think the question we should all find solution to is to ensure that we produce feed for adult fish with FCR of 0.7 - 0.8

It seems forum attention has now shifted to local feed production and fake feed that is now in circulation and has caused some businesses to experience loss, i want to advice those that have been victim never to allow such stepback deter them from succeeding, rather they should see it as a good challenge to prove their worth and become expert in feed composition.

As we all know, one of the major running cost in fish farming is the cost of feed, thereby your success in fish farming largely depend on feed quality and feed cost, and the only way we can be in charge of quality and cost of our feed is when we take CONTROL of our feed production.

A lot of research work are on internet on component of a quality feed for catfish that are beneficial to our production if put into use. I took the decision of producing my feed after i observed a sharp practice where i do pelletise my feed and discovered that my major component fishmeal was reduced and replaced with other junks.

Mr Ab1x formula is readily available on this thread and individual can make little adjustment to suite your environment. It hurt my heart to see people got burnt as a result of avoidable decision. Make the right decision by contacting people around you who can fabricate pelletising machine. Dedicate one staff to it if you cant go through the stress of doing it yourself. I would be ready to offer assistance if called upon. People have been of tremendous help to me most especially from this platform and i will want to reciprocate as a way of saying thank you. We should all begin to assist ourselves rather than make it difficult for starters and novice.

I had to transfer them to an empty pond, yet there's still mortality. I used fish biotic, salt, aquaceryl.but it hasn't stopped. The pond of 2000 is almost empty.what can I do? Pls help.....
Sorry about that, use oxytetracycline and salt to treat them, they'll be fine. Drain the water, add fresh water to one feet then add mixed tetracycline into the pond. leave for about 2-3hours then fill your water to normal level. You can repeat after 3-4 four days

Good afternoon my people, i just want to use this medium to thank selfless member of this forum who have been generous with information to young catfish farmers and i have been tutored by so many of you despite being far apart but your advise has been the light that illuminate the darkness world of fish farming.

One of my resolution to produce 50% of my feed by myself this year [2016] has been achieved with the designing of a locally produced grinding and pelletising machine that i now use to produce my rich pelletised feed. The 2 in 1 diesel machine uses one motor to drive the grinding as well as the pelletising machine and it has been very efficient.

My thanks goes to our professor in feed formulation, our amiable Ab1x for his contribution and advice on feed formula. I am very proud to announce that my 2mm feed with 40% fishmeal, 45% animal protein and 54.7 crude protein is less expensive compare to coppens 2mm. It is an eye opener that our local feeds if well formulated is far richer than the so called foreign feeds.

Mr Robonski, Soft777, Oga excellesoir, Chilanfarm, Komakan, Phemmy, Mecylicious, Billy and my respectable Nuvemberz, you are wonderful people, you have driven the passion to take calculated risk into our lives and we would not disappoint you.

Thank you all

Oga Ab1x, your final feed for weigh gain always contain broiler starter, since broiler starter is majorly made up of soybean and corn, what is the essence of broiler starter since your formula has certain percentage of soybean and corn?.
Why not just increase the percentage of these feedstuff and to save cost?
