On Nairaland alone, we have our one and only logicdude, and countless others , like Muskeeto, Cyrexx, Avicenna, etc, who have confessed to being better human beings after jettisoning the heavy yolk of religion.

Show me one or two people who have said the same about leaving atheism for religion.

By uttering this nonsense, you seem to have missed the point I was trying to get across to Ubenedictus, which I am sure he did.
You seem to be getting too desperate. Your religious mind is too conflicted. The center can no longer hold.

I think you are well on your way to atheism, but you might have to stop over at a shrink house for rehabilitation. grin

karpentar: After over two years of massacre leaving not less than 100,000 Syrians dead, it's now that someone is calling for fasting and prayer for Syria. Hezbollah, on several occasions openly supports and fights for murderous Assad government and there was no need for fasting and prayer. Just recently, Assad gassed his own people (including women and children) to death, the pope didn't request for fasting and prayer. Now Obama is spearheading a rescue mission to free Syrians from blood thirsty Assad and we are being asked to fast and pray against that? What a hypocritical world we live.
he decleared the day of fasting immediately after the chemical weapon incident. Before then he was asking world leaders to help in negotiations, both benedict 16 and francis has been advocating peace and prayer for syria long before the fightings reached their present proportions, the gear simply changed when chemical weapons entered the scene. There is yet no conclusive proof that it was the assad government that used the gas so please drop your emotional arguement and stop acting like francis started the war.

Christianity Etc › Re: Pope Francis Writes To Putin, Condem Military Intervention by Ubenedictus(op): 9:00am On Sep 06, 2013
Below is the full text of the Pope's letter to President Putin. To His Excellency
Mr Vladimir Putin
President of the Russian Federation
"In the course of this year, you have the honour and the responsibility of presiding over
the Group of the twenty largest economies in the world. I am aware that the Russian
Federation has participated in this group from the moment of its inception and has
always had a positive role to play in the promotion of good governance of the world’s
finances, which have been deeply affected by the crisis of 2008.
In today’s highly interdependent context, a global financial framework with its own just and clear rules is required in order to achieve a more equitable and fraternal world,
in which it is possible to overcome hunger, ensure decent employment and housing for
all, as well as essential healthcare. Your presidency of the G20 this year has committed
itself to consolidating the reform of the international financial organizations and to
achieving a consensus on financial standards suited to today’s circumstances. However,
the world economy will only develop if it allows a dignified way of life for all human beings, from the eldest to the unborn child, not just for citizens of the G20 member
states but for every inhabitant of the earth, even those in extreme social situations or in
the remotest places.
From this standpoint, it is clear that, for the world’s peoples, armed conflicts are always
a deliberate negation of international harmony, and create profound divisions and deep
wounds which require many years to heal. Wars are a concrete refusal to pursue the great economic and social goals that the international community has set itself, as seen,
for example, in the Millennium Development Goals. Unfortunately, the many armed
conflicts which continue to afflict the world today present us daily with dramatic
images of misery, hunger, illness and death. Without peace, there can be no form of
economic development. Violence never begets peace, the necessary condition for
development. The meeting of the Heads of State and Government of the twenty most powerful
economies, with two-thirds of the world’s population and ninety per cent of global GDP,
does not have international security as its principal purpose. Nevertheless, the meeting
will surely not forget the situation in the Middle East and particularly in Syria. It is
regrettable that, from the very beginning of the conflict in Syria, one-sided interests
have prevailed and in fact hindered the search for a solution that would have avoided the senseless massacre now unfolding. The leaders of the G20 cannot remain indifferent
to the dramatic situation of the beloved Syrian people which has lasted far too long, and
even risks bringing greater suffering to a region bitterly tested by strife and needful of
peace. To the leaders present, to each and every one, I make a heartfelt appeal for them
to help find ways to overcome the conflicting positions and to lay aside the futile
pursuit of a military solution. Rather, let there be a renewed commitment to seek, with courage and determination, a peaceful solution through dialogue and negotiation of the
parties, unanimously supported by the international community. Moreover, all
governments have the moral duty to do everything possible to ensure humanitarian
assistance to those suffering because of the conflict, both within and beyond the
country’s borders.
Mr President, in the hope that these thoughts may be a valid spiritual contribution to your meeting, I pray for the successful outcome of the G20’s work on this occasion. I
invoke an abundance of blessings upon the Summit in Saint Petersburg, upon the
participants and the citizens of the member states, and upon the work and efforts of the
2013 Russian Presidency of the G20.
While requesting your prayers, I take this opportunity to assure you, Mr President, of
my highest consideration."
From the Vatican, 4 September 2013
(Signed)
Francis

Christianity Etc › Pope Francis Writes To Putin, Condem Military Intervention by Ubenedictus(op): 8:58am On Sep 06, 2013
Pope Francis has written a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, host of the G-20 summit that President Obama is attending, urging world leaders to
oppose a military intervention in Syria. “To the leaders present, to each and
every one, I make a heartfelt appeal for them to help find ways to overcome the
conflicting positions and to lay aside the futile pursuit of a military solution,”
the Pope urged. “Rather, let there be a renewed commitment to seek,
with courage and determination, a peaceful solution through dialogue
and negotiation of the parties, unanimously supported by the
international community.” The move is the latest in a series of
efforts by the Holy See to prevent military action in the already civil-
war torn region. On Sunday, the Pope declared in his Angelus
teaching that Saturday Sept. 7 would be an day of fasting and prayer for peace in Syria. The prayer rally will take place in St. Peter’s Square from 7 p.m. to midnight, on the vigil
of the birth of Mary, the Queen of Peace. “Let us ask Mary to help us to respond to
violence, to conflict and to war, with the power of dialogue, reconciliation and love,” the Pope asked people around the world. “She is our mother: may she help us to find peace; all of us are her children!” Next Pope Francis took his views on Syria to Twitter. On Monday he tweeted, “War
never again! Never again war!” and “How much suffering, how much devastation, how
much pain has the use of arms carried in its wake.” On Tuesday, he tweeted “We want
in our society, torn apart by divisions and conflict, that peace break out!” and “With
utmost firmness I condemn the use of chemical weapons.” Today his social media
message was, “With all my strength, I ask each party in the conflict not to close themselves in solely on their own interests. #prayforpeace.” Cardinal Dolan and leaders of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops followed
the Pope’s lead and wrote to every member of Congress today urging them to vote
against military intervention in Syria. Yesterday the USCCB also wrote to President
Obama, reminding him that the Pope and Middle Eastern Bishops “have made it clear that a military attack will be counterproductive, will exacerbate an already deadly situation,
and will have unintended negative consequences.” Dolan also asked Catholics to urge
their representatives in Washington to vote against a military strike. The Vatican, which almost always stops short of taking sides in international issues,
historically holds to just war theory, which requires a military defense meet a set of strict qualifications, including that “the damage inflicted by the aggressor on the nation
or community of nations must be lasting, grave, and certain,” “all other means of putting
an end to it must have been shown to be impractical or ineffective,” and ”the use of
arms must not produce evils and disorders graver than the evil to be eliminated.” Pope Francis’ response to Syria is in line with how his predecessors
handled international conflicts. Pope Benedict XVI expressed concerns over the military intervention in Libya. Pope John Paul II continually and strongly spoke out against the
US-led war in Iraq. The US and the Vatican squared off during the 1989 Panama
invasion when dictator Manuel Noriega took refuge in the Vatican embassy. US seals tried to blast Noriega out with deafening levels of rock music and only stopped
the “rock-’n'-roll offensive,” as TIME called it, after the Vatican complained to President George HW Bush. Pope John Paul II kept quiet on the crisis, and left it to the hands of
Vatican officials. swampland.time.com/2013/09/05/pope-tweets-against-syria-strike-writes-putin-plans-saturday-vigil/

cold: Nazi Youth member Joseph Ratzinger was appointed in 1981 to head the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), formerly the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition - the mass murdering and torturing 'Holy Inquisition' - by the wrongly rose-painted Pope John Paul II.
it seems you are totally ignorant of the facts. Joining the nazi youth movement isn't by choice but by force. Every german youth in that period joined. It wasn't a matter of choice. Th congregation for doctrine and faith isn't in charge of the inquisition pope puis made sure of that.

The same Pope decreed in 2001 that all child abuse cases worldwide involving the Catholic clergy should be dealt with directly by Ratzinger at the CDF with the role, carried out with vigour, of stopping the Church-destroying truth coming to public attention and, in doing so, denying justice to abused children and allowing paedophile priests and bishops to stay in their jobs and continue their abuse of other children.
please present the decree that handed everything directly to ratzinger, mind you all papal decrees are online, simply present the decree and tell us how ratzinger didn't follow it.

Ratzinger has resigned because of ill health? His mate John Paul II continued in his last four years despite suffering from Parkinson's disease, severe arthritis and having difficulty speaking and hearing. Popes don't resign and this is why it hasn't happened for 600 years. This is really about the truth coming out and there is a tidal wave of that still to do so - especially in Ratzinger's case.
not every one is pope johnpaul, from the begining of ratzingers palpacy he made it very clear that he would resign should his bodily strength fail. Your idea that pope don't resign is immediately contradicted by your admission that it happens. Pope st celestine resign simply because he consider himself unskilled in worldly matters.

I have said it for two decades and I will go on saying it - paedophilia and Satanism are the cement that hold the global Establishment together and the Roman Church is founded upon both going back to its theological 'inspiration' in Babylon and beyond.
this is a conspiracy theory and it shows you are totally ignorant of the history of the catholic church. Ignorance is a disease even the bible says 'study to show yourself approve!

NO LONG TIN: I have 2 things to add in this argument

1. To the person claiming the Syrian people don't want Assad, on what evidence do u base ur claim??

I believe they don't want him because of the protest that was stage which lead to this war, because Assad sent his men to kill them (protesters) and also it's a know fact the Army are deflecting in large numbers to the rebels .

2. Rebels or terrorist don't have access to WMD (Sarin or chemical weapons in this case), if they did, I'm sure it won't be 'wasted' in Syria as Assad wants us to believe, instead it will be used by al queida in terrorizing the world.

N. B. For those supporting Assad’s claim that the rebels used chemical weapons, you should ask yourself this question? Why haven't other rebels in other countries used chemical weapons?
i only have one request for you. Tell me how al quaeda attained its present terrorist status.

uzoexcel: Iam going to speak objectively here...I have an issue with America always been on the forefront of liberalision of coUntries with conflicts as i feel they sometimes have dubious agendas but usually one cant blame them IMO...For all the US wrongdoings, i would rather have them as the world police/superpower than china/russia as they seem to have better conscience than the aforementioned countries.he syria war has been going on for ages but not one of the so-called world powers/anti american countries stepped in to resolve the conflict... The Arab league of nations middle eastern countries which should have stepped up and resolved this issue were just barking toothlessly..Not one of the middle eastern countries did anything while thousands of syrian's were killed....And if i was Obama, i would call out China!!lemme explain...china wants to be a superpower but in crises like this they are no where to be found or are always hiding behind the back of russia..The chinese are conscienceless and would never do anything to help...So it looks quite hypocritical when America wanna steps in 3 years after the conflict began and everyone is suddenly shouting 'anti-american' protests.Where were all these countries sincehuh
you should learn the first thing about been a super power, a super power acts first and foremost in its own interest. To claim nobody did anything about the conflict is untrue unless you have been ignorant of the delegations that has been sent there.

fewj: Reading through different comments regarding an impending war or should I say an impending U.S invasion of Syria and It sovereignty, Here are some points I think we should all note:

1. This impending invasion is a product of political turmoil, citizens of syria have rejected their government especially their president just like some other Arab nations did recently, why can't president Assad just step down, your own people don't want you anymore, you're imposing yourself on them at the cost of so many lives!!! You definitely do not have their best interest at heart!

2. This crisis didn't start today, its been on for over two years, neither the Assad regime, the U.S., Russia or even China have been able to come up with a reasonable solution and execute it to the later, Russia and China especially so far haven't done anything to mitigate the hardship being faced by Syrians through medical and food aid and anything else, instead they've been making huge profits from it buy selling more weapons to the Assad regime!!! grin

3. I never saw any thread here on Nairaland suggesting a solution to this crisis, or even commensurating with the Syrian people in their time of hardship for the over two years its been on sad

4. I also never saw any thread criticising the U.N. Security council for not doing nearly enough all this time, or even a thread mobilizing an anti Assad or even an Anti civil war rally all this time, now thousands have died! angry

Finally The U.S. is bold enough to initiate a military strike, tongues which have been silent to the death of people's children, parents, their lovers, spouse, uncles and aunties are now wagging. angry

In my opinion, the solution is very simple, Russia which has strong ties with the Assad regime should offer the Syrian president and his cohorts asylum, that would be a major game changer.

(If Russia won't, GEJ should set up a joint committee of boko haram and Mend to go and kidnap Assad cheesy cheesy cheesy, Na joke I dey o kiss kiss kiss)
this again is propagada, am i the so called activists who went to syria to stir a rather peacefull countryhuh Besides since when did riot become a means to unseat a presidenthuh Is it not the US and co that is supplying the rebels with weoponshuh If not for those weopons this war would have long ended.
The US lack the moral authority to even intervene because they are the reason the war is raging. They are responsible for the long war and when they strike there will be colateral damage.

Some people claim the Syrian rebels used the chemical weapons, but they should consider the following :

1. The Syrian government are known to possess Sarin gases.

2. Sarin gases are not like Eba in which any tom, dick and Harry can make in the kitchen, if it was Boko Haram, Hezbollah, Al queida etc would have used it.

3. The west consider Assad and the rebels as two devils
the US and the other rebel suporters also have sarin gas. The west has been giving then arms, i won't be suprising that they also gave them the gas

This is gonna be unlike Iraq or Afghanistan. There would be no boots on ground, just ariel strikes at some military infrastructure to reduce Asad's capability.

People like Asad are the reason why I still insist Mubarak is a patriot!! He didn't burn his country just to maintain his grip on power.

I feel people calling for the US not to act are only doing so just to sound politically correct. I mean, why should a whole country burn just for the selfish interest of ONE MANhuh It simply doesn't make any sense.

Seriously, who do you attack when you are unsure of the culprit? Where do you face your guns- to the areas of Syria in peaceful power or tragic destitution? This will perceptually worsen before it gets better.

This world is already locked into multiple pockets of cyclic vengence. We will never see peace until "the end".
