musicwriter: Speaking your native language is one thing. Using your native as a language of knowledge acquisition is another. Sri Lankans may speak their native language, but if you go there you'll find out knowledge acquisition happens in the language of their colonizers. Sri Lanka actually suffered severly from Portuguese colonization, Dutch colonization, and then British colonization.
No colonized country was allowed to use it's native language for knowledge acquisition. Native languages were deliberately destroyed by the colonists in order to deny the colonies their identity, pride, culture, and sense of nationality.
No nation has ever become great speaking the language of foreigners. It was actually stated in the bible at Genesis 11:6. The basic tool for development is speaking one native language. If you destroy the power of natural syntax and word formulation, you'll eventually destroy the culture that own such language in the long run. Someone posted it earlier that Noam Chomsky (the most intelligent person alive) and his team also proved this in an independent research.
Please read the link on my signature, part1 and part2. I still think it is possible to develop with English as our official language tho.... we just have to be serious people. That's my thought tho..... |

musicwriter: Then, I'll advise you not to quote me again in future, if you can't engage in intellectual debates. Discusions like this require one to type long epistles.
I read all of yours and remain ready to read them, if you think you can sustain your argument. I have noticed you overtime and even tho I don't agree with all your points, I have to say that you are quite informed. That said, I have just one point to make, In my view, I think that what makes a country developed/knowledgeable goes beyond language, as there are many countries who speak their "own" languages yet are not developed. Sri Lanka, Belarus etc comes to mind here..... What do you have to say about that? |

blues20: @op this what a supposed Nigerian posted on this thread. Go through it and see for yourself. I copied it verbatim.....
https://www.nairaland.com/3434857/federal-government-leaves-out-south/8#50615838
bankyman: I think the SE not being captured in this spending speaks a lot about the country and the government (Good or Bad). Because there is a region called the SE means that when we spend on infrastructure they must be captured? But yes they should....
Looking at the spending, there is nothing in which the SE is asking for that is new? They are all projects initiated before this government, abandoned and now its being looked into to be revitalized and completed. If there is no project to be completed in the SE, it means their leaders have been playing with their future and they were dancing to the rhythm played by the bad leaders blindly or this government is reaaly bad and trying to sideline them.
So whats the noise for? Is it that none of the project wont benefit them? They claim to be the commercial capital (Topic for another day), so if they really are what they say they are, they should be the ones jumping for joy as it means quick and super access to raw materials across the federation.
Now few questions for Ndi Igbo
1. Why the support for GEJ who left you in this impoverished state? 2. Why support for anything anti PMB govt. yet cry for attention for him? 3. Why can't there be a regional organisation from all the SE states with the aim of putting infrastructures across the region? 4. Why situate most of your organisations in Lagos when you could have developed the SE and get the FG looking at the region?
My piece of advice is that Ndi Igbo should look inwards to come out stronger, you claim to be the best and have nothing to show for it. Take a cue from Lagos, if you develop yourself others will come looking for you (you didn't develop Lagos, all you guys did well was to swell the population with people who prefer substandard in bulk than little in quality, I'd really wish you guys got Biafra and leave). One of the reasons this borrowing is devoid of the SE is because there is nothing there to boost the economy really (not completely absent though), Population you don't have, resources is scarce, infrastructure too is devoid, you are intolerable to visitors, and the best brains are either in Lagos doing good or bad and the rest committing one form of illegality or the other thinking they are growing the economy.
Really I ask and I beg for answers What Is There to Invest In In the SE?
N.B
Lagos = ports, diversity, good governance, self dependency, "Oil" North central, North West, North East = Population & Large expanse of Land SS = Oil SE =
Now you can see the average mindset of the typical Nigerian toward South East (Igbo). Do you expect us to keep quiet? I have a lot to say, but I'll not.... We are taking note of everything.... I'm still very young, and there are millions of my kind that are watching and taking note..... You are young and you reason this way? ?? What is wrong with all of you |

DerKaiser: Not necessarily.
During my secondary school days, I moved from C.I.C. Enugu to Lagos, in order to continue my secondary education there.
It was a private school where they had all those Lagos rich kids from Ikoyi and so on.
You know the type who travel to the States and the UK every long vacation and often return with their forced phonetics and American/British accent.
My English was very "Enuguish and Igbotic" then but I consistently had all As and Bs while there and climaxed it with WAEC and NECO results that were still all As.
It turned out that most of those Queens English speaking kids in my school then were all compound Olodos.
They often fail like they are getting paid for it.
There you have it. Diction and English proficiency does not determine academic success or excellence. Yea Whether you can speak your language or not, an intellegent person is an intellegent person. Like the Jewish people who are scattered across the world, but cannot speak Hebrew, yet they are excelling at every turn.... No be by language o |

EdoBoy90: First, English is not the most spoken language in the world. In fact, English is third in term of hierarchy of languages in the world. Chinese is the most spoken language in the world follow by Spanish then English. About 1.2 bn people are speaking Chinese. Today, China has taken over world economy two weeks ago according to IMF rating. Before you know it, they will be number one world power country in the world.
For instance, take Germany, China, Japan, India, Russia etc they don't speak English yet they are well developed. India was colonized by Britain, today the Indians are speaking their official language not English. Let us have our own official language not this imported and adopted language called Enligh. Most countries colonized by Britain are not speaking English as their official language again. They have abolished English and speaking their main official language. But Lithuania, Belarus, and Sri Lanka among other countries speak their languages, yet they are not developed AT ALL. How do you explain that? What makes a country developed really is how serious the people are not necessarily the language, because there are MANY countries in this world who speak their "own" languages yet they are not developed. |

lyterydim: you need a mental reconfiguration brother, It's without intellectual ability their is no academic excellence, SO we are talking the same thing,
Moreover how can you claim you are successful in academic without knowing your root( mothers tongue)?
It's is knowing your language and knowing it well that enhance your knowledge to define things and undastand things in your own terms. But there are Many Nigerians in which English is their first language and they think in English, and also understand things in their own terms...... Language is fluid bro. The first Language(s) you learn and learn well is your mother tongue, which does not have to be the language of your ancestors. If you learnt Yoruba first, and can speak it well, understand the idioms/proverbs, etc, then your first language is Yoruba, and such person will most likely think in Yoruba. But if it is English, that person's native language is English. That is just the way it is. |

Richy4: Maybe the first thing you should do is check or Google the meaning of first language... then we will start from there instead of both of us wasting spaces for others that wants to comment.. And as for the "assignment" you gave me. .. I copied this straight from Wikipedia.. A first language (also native language , father tongue/ mother tongue , arterial language , or L1 ) is the language or are the languages a person has been exposed to from birth [1] or within the critical period , or that a person speaks the best and so is often the basis for sociolinguistic identity [citation needed ]. In some countries, the terms native language or mother tongue refer to the language of one's ethnic group rather than one's first language. [2] Children brought up speaking more than one language can have more than one native language, and be bilingual . By contrast, a second language is any language that one speaks other than one's first language. What is typed up there validates my point.. The language of your ancestors does not have to be your first/native language, and one can have more than one native language (L1) Hope you learnt something new today... Good morning |

Lol, you wish. Do you understand what I mean by "Langue Maternelle" Any language you learn before you are 4-5 is your "Langue Maternelle" for example, A Belgian who speaks both Dutch and French and think in both Languages even tho he is from the Dutch part of Belgium. So yes indeed, a Nigerian can claim English as his first language, without any consequence at all. |

Richy4: OP, English is not your first language....but an Official language. You are not a native speaker....
For example, if you were looking for a job @ UN, and there was a space where you were asked if English was your native language, are you gonna say yes that it was your mother tongue?...meanwhile u have already filled in the form that you were from Nigeria an African nation.....Is that not lies that got consequences....Just trying to correct an impression that English was a first language in Nigeria.... Any language you learnt before 6 or I think 7 is your native language..... A French kid who moved to U.S. at the age of 4 for example, and is now an adult who can speak both English and French can say that his native language is English too. I don't know how to explain it in English, but I'm French its "Langue Matenelle" So yes indeed, you can say English is your native language as a Nigerian, if of course you can speak it well. |

3Div: Hello Guys,
Great work Harzontorh, Ugosample and all,
I have a conference to attend in Liberia in December, now Organizers have pegged transport for 160k (airfare), when I asked about Road, I was given a bill of 74k which I think is total bollocks. They wrote Lagos - Ghana 16k, Ghana to Ivory Coast 18k, Ivory coast to Lib 36k.
Haba now!.
Anyway, my search for a viable means led me here, now i'm really interested in seeing Ivory coast as well.
I see ngcars paid 23k to Abidjan, does anyone have any information on how much it'll cost to get to Monrovia, Liberia as well ?.
What time does the bus get to Abidjan.. (I'm hoping to get to Monrovia next day at most).
Thanks.
NB: I intend to spend a while in Abidjan on my return... These pictures have made me ditch my plan of returning by air already. I must explore the West African coast. Lagos to Abidjan straight via YSG should not be more than 26k. Then in Abidjan, you can go to Adjame side sha, there is a bus park there that is like mile 2 or something, you will see buses that go to Liberia there, though I don't know the price Come with your passport, and make sure you go with vitamins, and mineral supplements, as well as anti bacteria hamdwash, so you don't get sick Safe. |

Yorubas actually have no clue of of whats going on this country. Yorubas actually think things are normal! Look, I am an Igbo man myself, and I daresay that the only person holding the Igbo man is himself. Individualism and Selfishness and "o n'enye m nri" mentality is what is killing us. We all want to stand individually and that is why they keep losing in this country.
