You mentioned calls...I came from a family that could be described as middle class, yet in the 1980's we could not afford a NITEL phone. To make calls we had to go to the nearest NITEL phone exchange to do that...for local to international calls. (There is a reason why David Mark said back then that telephones were for the rich).

Now, we can make international calls from anywhere (and even then also has to do with the steady march of technological development to some extent).

Even computers...a computer was something you saw in some offices (and most officies back then had typewriters, not computers. Bank nko?) now they are in many places...including market self.

I also came from middle class family and we had NITEL phone.
-70's, we lived in Surulere Lagos, we had a phone
-80's, we lived outside Lagos in the east, No phone. There was no NITEL setup for phone
-late 80's, we lived in Ijanikin (toward Badagry). No phone. No NITEL Setup for phone.
-late 80's - mid 90's, Yaba. We had NITEL phone.
-90's to mid 2010. Ikoyi. Initially a phone and later the total collapse of NITEL. No more NITEL phone.
we were always going to NITEL office to complain about phone line and get them to fix dial tone for us.
It was quite stressful and ultimately NITEL collapsed.
Each person bought their Nokia phone.
Basically, we always had a phone where NITEL setup was available. But the service was bad O and expensive.
