PoliticsRe: Northern Elders To Jonathan - You Have Declared War On Northern Nigeria by vanstanzy(m): 10:43am On May 17, 2013
igbsam: Northern elders on Thursday broke their silence on the slamming of state of emergency in three of their states, describing the action of President Goodluck Jonathan as an indirect declaration of war on the Northern part of Nigeria.

The President’s action, which took the northern elders by surprise, is coming barely three weeks after Jonathan accepted a roadmap from the NEF on how to end the Boko Haram insurgency in parts of the north.

The elders had successfully impressed upon the Presidency to raise the Boko Haram committee to dialogue with the sect with a view to restoring elusive peace to the region. Jonathan, who met with the NEF leadership in Abuja in April, subsequently inaugurated the Turaki-led BH committee with a mandate to broker peace with the sect and compensate their victims within a two-month timeframe.

However, shortly after inaugurating the panel, the sect leadership rejected the amnesty offer, saying that it is the government that should seek amnesty for having killed its Muslim brothers across the country.

But a spokesman for the NEF, Prof Ango Abdullahi, who relayed the position of the group on Thursday, told Vanguard that they were disappointed by the sudden change of tactic by Jonathan on how to resolve the crisis in the north.

“It is very sad for us to see that the President has easily changed direction from dialogue and reconciliation to war in his bid to end the cycle of violence in the north,” Abdullahi said.

This Northerners are the ones behind the chaos going on in the country. They know what they are doing.
These Northerners make it sound as though its a bad thing to declare war in the North. I was of the opinion that they would be used to it by now, undecided undecided undecided I mean they "Sleep Jihad, Eat Jihad and Think Jihad", so it shouldn't be a problem to them, should it?. wink wink wink
PoliticsRe: Boko-Haram Was Planning To Declare Their Own Country - Tukur by vanstanzy(m): 6:57pm On May 16, 2013
mamikky: National Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur on Wednesday revealed that the terrorists behind the unending crises in the Northern parts of the country had concluded plans to secede and declare their own State before the Federal Government struck on Tuesday and declared emergency rule in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.

Alhaji Tukur who made the revelation in Abuja while receiving in audience a group of journalists from Kaduna State who paid him a courtesy call said that President Goodluck Jonathan settled for emergency rule in the affected states for the sake of unity, peace and stability of Nigeria as a nation.

According to him“Mr President took the last option of declaring a State of Emergency because the terrorists were becoming more daring. They were even planning to declare a state of their own and these happened because many of us believed that the menace of terrorism has been a problem for the north alone.”

Alhaji Tukur, while expressing absolute confidence in the ability of the nation’s armed forces and other security agencies to make the State of Emergency work in the affected states, pleaded with politicians and other stakeholders to rally round the government with every means in their capacity to make the fight against terrorism succeed.

Speaking on why the emergency rule was extended to his state, Adamawa, Alhaji Tukur said that the consideration of the government was that since Borno and Adamawa were geographically contiguous, it made a lot of sense to engage terrorists within the zones broadly in an attempt to break their network and areas of stronghold.

According to him, “though Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states will be feeling the heats of the State of Emergency at the moment, all states of the federation must begin to guard their borders, as a proactive measure for limiting the scope and space for operations of terrorists.

PoliticsRe: Lagos To Generate 50MW Of Electricity From Waste by vanstanzy(m): 10:53am On May 13, 2013
GeneralJ: Lagos To generate 50MW from waste

The Lagos State Government, through its waste to electricity scheme, has disclosed plans to generate 50 Megawatts of electricity from solid waste in the coming years.

The project, according to the Managing Director, Lagos Waste Management Authority, Mr. Ola Oresanya, will generate energy from large dump sites and landfills across the state.

He said, “We have succeeded in producing electricity from waste at the Ikosi Fruit Market. It is already generating electricity and we are going to scale that up in all markets in Lagos. The largest quantum of electricity is going to come from the Olusosun landfill in Ojota, which will be a minimum of one megawatt; we are looking at about five megawatts from that site, which we can scale up because the site has a potential for about 25 to 30MW.

“If you look at the combined potential of energy we can generate from waste in Lagos, it is more than 50 megawatts, which is enough to lighten up a small village. There will be energy from our transfer loading stations, which will be programmed in such a way that the tonnage of waste that moves to those sites will incorporate thermal conversion into electricity.”

He said LAWMA was also building gas capture wells at the Olusosun landfill for the production of electricity.

“The Ojota landfill is about 20 years old and has over 30 million tones of waste buried in the land; it is turning into an asset for us. From July, we will start the process of getting certification from the French government on carbon credit for the site. It was recently turned into a Clean Development Mechanism project published on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change carbon credit page. It is the fifth CDM project registered in Nigeria,” he said.

The managing director said the state also had plans to begin recycling waste into secondary raw materials and had commenced the development of a recycling plant at the Solous landfill.

“The Solous landfill at Igando is a potential asset too; we have commenced a development there, which is a materials recovery project. And talking about recycling, we have the biggest compost plant in Africa located in Ikorodu, producing compost,” he said.

Oresanya said the plans were part of LAWMA’s 15-year road map, which began in 2005, adding, “Lagos should be able to turn 60 per cent of all waste materials into secondary raw materials; right now, we are at about 15 per cent, and we are working on meeting the target.”

Good step to take in reducing our waste problems in Lagos. Just hope that other states will borrow a quick leaf from this and start helping our power problems.

It really tickles my fancy when people think up solutions instead of adding problems to the already existing pile.
