Openbusiness3: even Universities and technical schools have criminalized indecent dressing. You can't enter Yabatech dressed like that. Na for gate d security go hold am. I don't have time to be digging for the law exactly, but if you see a police officer, ask him whether or not indecent dressing is an offense in Nigeria. In Abuja, they even had taskforce going around arresting girls that dress anyhow. If not for rape incidents of females in detention that caused scandals, that made them to mellow down on the operation. You cannot just dress anyhow in the name of fashion in public. If you want to expose your unclothedness stay in the house. Do you know that even as a man if you are driving a car without wearing your shirt, just bare chest with trouser, you can be arrested for that? You can also be arrested for moving around the road as a man wearing singlet and boxer shorts in major public places during broad daylight? They can charge you to court for it. So forget it. Our law enforcement guys are "sleeping", that is, they have been made handicap by all these sugar daddies in govt running this babes that why the officers just ignore taking action against those girls. I don't need a police officer to teach me the Law. And I'm not engaging in fruitless Nairaland arguments. I've told you precisely what the Law says. I wasn't guessing or mincing words. If you have any opposing section, state it. |

Openbusiness3: Arrested for what? According to Nigeria laws, that girl should be arrested for indecent exposure, but our police officers don't know their work again are jonzing Hey! Nairalanders! Which law are you quoting?? According to the Criminal Code and Penal Code, there is no section of the law that penalises anyone who puts on clothes seen or perceived to be indecent. The criminal code only made provisions for indecent acts in public places (section 231). On the other hand, unpermitted photography (as a violation of privacy) is addressed under section 97 of the Nigerian constitution 1999 as amended. You guys need to understand that it will be very difficult to criminalise women's dressing such as the one in the pic while men walk around bare chested all the time. Besides, the line between what is decent and what is indecent will blurred up by subjectivity. |

I like your writeup; I like how you skillfully communicated with your audience.
I don't doubt your story but a lot of questions beg for answers. What could have made you former roommate discuss your drugs with thier family doctor? Has your std got anything to do with his health problems? Or he just got up from the hospital bed and said, "ehe, doctor, do you know that my roommate takes post exposure prophylaxis?". You, why would you give our your secrete to an unknown person over the phone? And how did you know it was the same doctor since you didn't see his face back then?
Anyway, himself and his family freaked out, that's not cool but a lot people do freak out when they learn they've been sharing space with a pos. However, their reaction was inexcusable. You were stigmatised and, at the same time, robbed. In a bid to protect their child, they dragged another person's child through the blades. They could have handled it better.
Fate has delivered your "enemies" into your hands. For some people, it's called "pay back time" but I personally think it's "lesson time". In other words, you don't need to play 'god' by hurting them back but you can let them know they are in your net and you're only choosing to let go. This way, they'd learn to treat people with respect next time. You also need to learn how to be careful with your details. But if you yank the doctor off the closet, you wouldn't be any different from the people who hurt you. Besides, that might lead to another drama you'd rather not have considering the country you live in. Helping the sister or not helping her is up to you, you don't owe them anything.
In summary, the two options before you are: divulging your identity to each party involved and let their conscience take it up from there or just ignore them all and let your past be your past! The first will give you a sense of 'evenness' yet without hurting anyone or exposing yourself to episode two of the stigmatization. The second would save you the stress of dealing with an ugly past event once again. At your age and level, you have a lot of other more productive things to focus your energy on.
Most importantly, stay strong. I mean both physically and mentally. The world is wicked and you'd still face some more social ostracism (as you can see from comments above); no point sugarcoating it. But with a definite mindset, you'll glide through. |

etrange: Where did I mention or compared computing science with anything? Nobody ever mentioned anything like "computing scientist" or remotely compared that to "programming" till you brought it up yourself and made it the base of your submissions. It has been clarified over and over again what computing meant in my context but you keep going around that for reasons best known to you.
My point to you is that comparing cybersecurity and "programming" and calling one a big cat is vague. Programming is a very general word and it cuts across different areas including cyber security itself. It doesn't make any logical sense to use the generic word "programming" in this scenario. Some cyber security guys also write programs for things like penetration testing, vulnerability assessment, etc. so to a point, they are programming too. Database developers write programs too (routines). Animation experts write programs. It is like comparing Data Science or Machine Learning with "programming" knowing fully well that in one way or the other, these fields have programming as a sub component. If you want to make such comparison, you have to be specific about the type of programming you mean. That's the only time it will make sense.
Good luck with your career, bro. You have patience! But I suggest you stop wasting your time. That guy's aim is just to appear knowledgeable and not have a reasonable discussion. |

stanliwise: No I didn’t do that. I gave a context when I made my definition. Compute in CSC means to calculate and when doing this it is majorly based on data manipulation unlike maths where it is just mere theoretical numbers. Maybe you felt so but I have no intentions of what you speak. You'll not learn from people if you continue like this . He told you exactly what meaning he used in his message and yet you left that and went ahead to tell him what computing is in CS. You really think you know that more than he does? You keep saying Computing Science, where did he ever mention computing science? Were you not the one that brought in computing as a science? He said computing and still went on to show you the plain meaning but you kept making fuse about something that was never relevant to his correction. Even in your last message to him above, you're still being adamant and bringing up a comparison he never made. You type like a student. All these exuberances are immature and typical of people with very limited knowledge. Based on what exactly is your analogy right? That cyber security is like lion or whatever to programming? Seriously, that was a hasty generalization. What type of programming were you referring to specifically? The same programming that made the tools cyber security guys use? A good deal of the OS itself was written by programmers. So what exactly is the bases for your analogy? It's obvious you were just thinking of mobile and web programming when you said that (this, I believe, was exactly what they guy was trying to point out) and the least I expected you to do was to say that was what you meant but you're still being stubborn. |

TheRealProphet: racial discrimination etc...no place is safe as long as you're black. Read me clearly, I said freedom of association, decriminalization of homosexuality and protection of human rights. Protection of human rights does not mean there is no racism. You can't really stop people from being racists by power. Protection means efforts are clearly channelled in that direction. There are credible institutions on ground to promote freedom and address violation of such freedoms. A good example is the Canadian employment equity act that addresses racial diversity in work places. There are a host of other such institutions with the goal of protecting basic human rights like freedom of religion, gay rights, gender equality, etc. They may still have some way to go but the efforts is worth appreciating. Again, I said this makes Canada a better place to leave. I never said it was a safe heaven. No place is but some places are safer. |

stanliwise: Compute means to use computer. Haba why na? Compute in computer science means to calculate, it doesn’t have to be with any machine. Machine gives us speed and accuracy and reduce fatigue. Since you are a computing scientist. You know our job is to use a computer(I mean computer like e.g Turing machine) to solve problems of data. This literally doesn’t mean we have to use the physical, it means we should invent the method it can be used in a computer. For example Numerical analysis is a field of computing where computing scientist tries to solve our analytic mathematics using iterative or mechanical formulas so that machine could solve it just like us. E.g calculus Naw o! Is this the discussion ? Oga, you're not even addressing the guy's message. Computing has many definitions and he told the one he used in his post. Get back to point or just move on! Haba! This is I why I don't like commenting here. Nobody wants to learn from the other. Everything to you guys is a competition and that's very childish. You're just trying to make it look as if he doesn't know what he's saying instead of addressing his core point. There's nothing wrong with saying "Yeah, dude. That's a good perspective. He is being disbared cause of citizenship forgery? This is extremely shameful but the association that admitted him into the legal practice only to start digging after he was nominated for the new position should also cover their faces in shame cause it's obvious corruption or, at least, incompetence is on a free flow over there. However, even more shameful is the attitude of Nigerians back home (like the Nairalanders above who didn't even read the writeup) who have turned such embarrassing news into a source of pleasure.
Honestly, I feel sad each time a Nigerian is involved in a crime out there. It's so embarrassing especially for those of us living outside the country. But before ya'll start fighting one another and insulting each other's tribe and your country at large, know that people get disbared all the time for many reasons; white, blacks, etc. You don't hear about them cause no one cares. This guy just happens to be a Nigerian. Talking about Nigerian crimes outside the country is an attractive trend right now and any news outlet - local and international - would gladly jump at it. So before you ask why it's always Nigeria, it's not always Nigeria but other countries don't have the spotlight already so it doesn't add any value mentioning their names. Even if it one Nigerian involved in a crime, the headline would still say "one Nigerian and fifteen others caught....". Notice how the countries of origin of the fifteen others don't matter. Again, before you ask why always Nigeria, ask yourself how many other countries have thier people represented in the Liberian Bar Association. Our population keeps us everywhere thus making us the source of very good and very bad. The spotlight is on us, we need to change the narrative or we'll keep getting tagged.
Am I letting Nigeria off the hook? No, we shouldn't even have had the negative spotlight in the first place! But I'm saying we shouldn't join the international media to reduce us to nothingness. Let's change the narrative while cleaning up our mess. We push a say-no-to-crime-campaign internally while we question, investigate and properly edit international reports instead of fighting each other, entertaining the world and sinking at the same time.

But that aside, the cry for equality aimes at positive dynamism. The perfect state of equality may not be attainable in the near future but the campaign for equitable rights acts as a check to the excesses of the supposedly superior party. And so far, that seems to be working. And racism can end, it's just not happening soon. History has shown that world is extremely dynamic. This is a good response to your question: LGBTQ+:The Hipocricy Of Black Activism And The Sorrows Of The Voiceless Minority
Descrimination can simply be defined as the unjust treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race (racism), tribe (tribalism), gender (sexism), religion (religious bigotry), sexual orientation (homophobia), nationality (xenophobia), social status (classism), etc. Efforts have been made to keep a tight rein on this societal menace that could present a peril to mankind. However, largely due to far right politics and ideologies, discrimination has continued to thrive in our world today. This has, in turn, kept the anti discrimination campaigners on their toes. The campaign against racism, the most pronounced form of discrimination, recently gained some traction after an uproar over the killing of an armless black American by white police officers in the Unted States. This campaign is mostly led by blacks across the globe who have come out to condemn, in strong words, the maltreatment of people based on their skin colour. According to this campaigners, every individual should be addressed by their content and not by their skin colour thus echoing the words of Martin Luther King Jr. Of course, Africans are not left out. A good deal of the world's black population is from Africa. It's only pertinent that we lend our voice to the positive movement. And this brings me to the gist of this "epistle"; the philosophy of African moral compass as it relates to both internal and external struggles against discrimination.
While progress is being made at the global level, different types of discrimination still flourish in Africa. This because we have not internally agreed to give the word "discrimination" a formal, all encompassing and infallible definition. We still view it through the lense of our own gains or the majority stance thus redefining it for each situation. We do not speak up against discrimination, we speak up against whatever that directly affects us or, at least, the majority. This selective activism leaves behind some loopholes that constitute a point of reference for descrimination apologists. We cry out when Christians are killed. We say "why not practice your religion and let others practice thiers in peace?". This is not because we truly believe in this philosophy. It's something we just say to suit the moment. The truth is, no one would care if they were a few hundred voiceless people practicing a religion we don't know much about. In that case, it will be just to arrest them so they wouldn't "corrupt" our system with thier "nonsense". Constructing windows for a roofless building will obviously not protect us against the harsh weather.
Therefore, the only way to be a true advocate of coexistence is by wholesomely kicking against discrimination regardless of the parties involved. We must learn to lend voice to the minority. We need to know that the excuses we make for discriminating against a people today will be borrowed by those discriminating against us. We all rejoiced when homosexuality was criminalised in Nigeria. We said it was/is against our religious belief. To us, it wasn't discrimination. We just wanted to get rid of a menace. Afterall, both Christians and Muslims are against it. We were quick to redefine discrimination at that point just to suit the majority but we ended up paving way for it to eat deep into our society. By our actions or inactions, we told the nation that it is right to kill anyone anyone who has a way of life that is not in tandem with our religion or culture. We said it was a sin but we knew that the law does not fight sins so we had to take a step further and call it a crime. By so doing, we made a mockery of the Law; we reduced it to a tool for protecting cultural/religious values. All in a bid to justify and galvanize discrimination. We made ourselves the custodians of natural selection by saying it's not "natural". We forgot that unnatural is expecting any aspect of nature to be consistent. Even the concept of day and night, the most natural aspect of nature, is not consistent. Only the artificial makes no room for exceptions/divergences. Some say it will reduce our population or even make us go into extinction yet the majority of these people are Catholics, a denomination that does not allow their priests to get married; that one won't reduce our population. We say it is disgusting. Perhaps, it is as disgusting as our colour and hair texture are to the white man. We know that adultery - a marital breach of contract that hurts one of the involved parties - is more 'criminal' than how two consent adults are wired to love. But we would happily drop logic where it pleases us; after all we are the majority. At the end, we still carry placards and take to the streets against discrimination. The hypocrisy is mind blowing, the minority is gagged. People are depressed, they have no one to talk to. They are our fathers, brothers, sisters, colleagues, friends, etc.. They are all amongst us struggling with who they are. Think about it. Just take a brief moment to think about them.
Many will read my "epistle" and ignore or, at best, gear up for a defensive argument. I am OK with the later, an argument of this nature has become a treasure in a country where the oppressed minority are not even allowed put up a word for themselves. The subject is suppressed and a set of people is criminalised without given the chance to explain or express themselves. Regardless of how thoughtful this thread is and no matter how many mods I put in copy, it will not hit the front page. Doesn't that remind you of internet censorship in the Middle East? But it does not matter After all, it is safer to pretend these people do not exist since no one feels their pains; the hopelessness of it all. As you move on to the next thread, do not lose sight of the gist here: every excuse we make for discriminating against a people serves as a source of strength for those discriminating against us. Therefore, inclusive activism is key to a successful campaign against discrimination.
