Seeing this thread for the first time.

Pardon my ignorance peeps. I always here people quoting Surah Ahzab:5 in relation to a woman bearing her father's name but what I see in that verse is about adopted sons, I don't see anything relating to a woman's surname there. Someone please enlighten me.

FamilyRe: Is It Disrespectful To Read Your Spouse's SMS? by zayhal(f): 11:35am On Sep 05, 2012
I wouldn't say it's disrespectful but in relationship the partners know their 'boundaries' so to say. If he can read hers then she can read his. But I think it's more appropriate to pass the phone to the owner instead of opening the inbox and reading. It's not your message, it's his/hers.
FamilyRe: My Wife's Attitude. by zayhal(f): 9:20am On Sep 05, 2012
Mac,
Which yeye push to the wall? Will you hit a colleague at work if they push you to the wall? The issue with men who hit their wives is not about the wife causing them to do so. It has more to do with the perception they have about women in marriage, how much respect they feel for the wife.

Even children should not be hit at will not to talk of a full-grown adult, wife!

Op
Your wife has taught you a lesson. If you hit her again, she'll hit you harder, if you overpower her, she'll get stronger men to dish it out to you. Meanwhile, get into the kitchen and make yourself a plate of noodles.
FamilyRe: My Wife's Attitude. by zayhal(f): 9:10am On Sep 05, 2012
So you beat your wife and expects her to say 'thank you darling, I'm sorry for provoking you to hit me' or for her to go into fasting and prayer so you won't do such again or betterstill, run to nairaland crying 'my hubby has started beating me'? I don't even care about whatever caused the argument between you. Is this how you hit your friends, colleagues at work, neighbours when you have disagreements?

The woman hit you back now and you're feeling bruised. Good for you. I like your wife. You'd better go back and apologise more and make a promise to her and to yourself that you'll never hit her again. You may also want to go for anger management classes.
IslamRe: Baby Born With Rosary In Ogun State by zayhal(f): 5:23pm On Sep 02, 2012
And by the way, what's the significance of rosary in Islam, it's only a counter, no special religous significance! The initiator of this story should be arrested.
IslamRe: Baby Born With Rosary In Ogun State by zayhal(f): 5:13pm On Sep 02, 2012
This story is fake as far as I'm concerned. The story says the mid wife heard something(the rosary) drop before baby came out and then the baby held on to the rosary and did not allow anyone take it from his hand. Did the baby pick the rosary up from the birth pan after he was delivered? Or someone helped him pick it? Inconsistencies everywhere. One needs to be smart to tell lies.

Islam does not need such fake stories to stand.

If you can help him to stop drinking then try and do so. At least, if he does not drink, he won't pee. And if he refuses to seek help on how he can stop drinking and also refuses to go for medical help regarding the bedwetting, then leave the room for him and sleep in another room. Hopefully, this will make him change his mind.

FamilyRe: When Are You Too Old To Cry Openly Over A Lost Loved One? by zayhal(f): 12:35pm On Sep 02, 2012
You may never get over your dad's death but you can try to control the crying sessions by avoiding things that'll bring memories of him strongly enough to make you cry. But you should feel comfortable crying before your fiancee anytime, she's your other half and should share in your feelings and emotions.

There's no age limit to crying openly over a lost loved one. It's human and natural.

FamilyRe: Parents With Young Children And Phones by zayhal(f): 8:11am On Aug 31, 2012
No matter how much or how attractive children's toys are, they usually prefer phones to their toys. Even if you get them phones toys that rings, has lights, it's yours they still want.

But I think we should be more concerned about letting these kids get phones into their mouth, this is not good for their health at all. If a baby could soak a phone with saliva it means he/she must have swallowed lots of dirts on the phone. So while trying to prevent our phones from spoiling, we should also have in mind that we're preventing the kids from swallowing germs especially those below age 1.

Initially I also said I won't use expensive phones anymore but I realised that even if I use nokia 3310, it'll still attract them and the fear of them putting it in mouth and acquiring germs is no less, so now I use any phone I like but keep them away from the kids. If after calling my baby reaches out for it, I firmly tell him 'No' and quickly finds him another toy or do something funny to distract him. The downside of this is that at times, I get some missed calls and have to call those people back but I don't really mind as long as my baby is free of phone germs and my phone is free of baby wrecking it.

I think the reason these children find our phones so attractive is because of the way a lot of people carry the phones about, to the toilet, kitchen when cooking, garden, everywhere. They see that it's almost as important if not more than them (children) ‎ℓoℓ‎.
IslamRe: Different Types Of Covering That Muslim Women Use by zayhal(f): 9:47pm On Aug 30, 2012
It's interesting to note that hijab types are kind of culture based and when one wears a hijab that is different from the regular one in a particular region, you tend to get strange looks. Was in UAE sometime ago and got this strange looks from the sisters. I think my kind of hijab was new to them. ‎ℓoℓ‎.

And btw, it's also interesting to note that there's a kind of hijab style unique to Nigerian sisters, the one that's like the picture @maclatunji calls khimar but quite longer reaching the knee length or a bit above the knee. Mac, what's that one called jare? And has anyone seen this type on non-Nigerian muslimah?

Note: I use the term 'hijab' here to refer to all types of covering.

FamilyRe: Calling Your Mum's Big Brother "Uncle": Despicable Or Not? by zayhal(f): 4:34pm On Aug 30, 2012
Despicable is a strong word there.

Depends on what operates in the family and/or circumstances sorrounding you. It may be a big deal in some families while it won't in others. We all used to call my dad's younger brother 'uncle' till recently after my dad's death. As if we had a meeting on it, we just switched from 'uncle' to 'daddy'.In other Yoruba families I know, it's almost a taboo to call your father or mother's brothers/sisters uncle/aunt. They see it as a sign of disrespect. They want to be called daddy/mummy too. That's why we have so many daddies and mummies in Yoruba families. (Don't know if same operates in other ethnic groups in Nigeria.)

Personally, I'd call them what they like/want. Doesn't add or take anything away from me.
FamilyRe: Should I Forgive Her by zayhal(f): 11:59pm On Aug 28, 2012
The issue is very simple: keep her secret as she's begged and end the relationship with her. Tell anyone who cares to hear that you two are not meant for each other. If your families see that the break-up is mutual between two of you, they won't do much at reconciling you or trying too hard to know what went wrong.

I have a close pal who ended a 7-year courtship with his girl. Everyone asked to no avail why he did such but he just kept saying the relationship wasn't meant to be. About 5 years later (this year), we got talking and he just divulged his reason for the break-up: the lady was cheating on him and even spending the other guy's money to buy him gifts. She was nursing guilt, decided. To confess and even told the guy that she knew she diD not deserve him, they should break up but begged him to keep the secret. And he did just that.
FamilyRe: Men! Is It Bad For Your Wife To Know How Much Your Salary Is? by zayhal(f): 11:41pm On Aug 28, 2012
Her asking the man about his salary may be the main reason the man refused to tell her. She should know naturally without asking formally. And concluding that the man not telling her means he does not love her is also wrong and childish.

Tell your friend to stop asking and making an issue out of this. Sooner or later, she will know especially if she has a source of income herself. Planning, budgeting, general discussions will lead to him telling her but if she keeps asking and making noise about it, the man may continue getting a kick out of keeping it a 'secret'.

FamilyRe: Married Women Using Their Father's Name As Middle Name by zayhal(f): 3:48pm On Aug 27, 2012
It's only petty men that'll be so hard on issues like this. If there's love and understanding between a couple, the name thing won't even matter at all, whether the wife keeps her maiden name or not.

The op is very funny, how can marriage to a woman translate to ownership of her? These primitive way of thinking na wa o.

FamilyRe: Coping With A Beautiful, Loving, Helpful But A Nagging-Wife? by zayhal(f): 3:19pm On Aug 27, 2012
Poster try looking on the brighter side, concentrate on her good sides. You should also let her know you're not happy with the way she nags, tell her this when she's in her good mood. Nagging is a habit and it takes time to break it so be patient while awaiting her to change.
