Gov. Ganduje is one of the few governors a bit serious about projects. While others are only embezzling, he is embezzling and working as well. By the way, what is it with nairaland and begging accounts all over the place? |
Pastor Chris Oyakhilome has made history Published April 9, 2020 Thursday with Abimbola Adelakun In the past few days, I have watched several videos of my former pastor, Chris Oyakhilome, rehashing conspiracy theories that linked 5G technology with COVID-19. It has been a deeply embarrassing experience for me, watching him talk so confidently about what he has not even tried to understand. Oyakhilome’s church, Christ Embassy, has many upwardly mobile young people. Some of them work in the tech industry and could have put their pastor straight with some quick education on the different natures of technology and disease. How did they allow him to go on the pulpit and be asking people to pray against vaccines? How did it happen that he could pull up poorly designed charts on a large screen in the church and even share several videos that, although confirmed his paranoia, proved nothing substantial about the danger of 5G technology? Pastor Chris is (or used to be) a modernist. I attended his church at some point partly because he was a skilled preacher of the Word with dazzling stagecraft, and partly because of their taste for tech stuff especially as it concerns modern gadgets. Part of Christ Embassy’s niche has been an unapologetic deployment of the aesthetic of the novel, their perspicacity to employ newer technologies before their counterparts. I do not think there is any church in Nigeria that has as many digital apps as Christ Embassy currently does. They invest in projects that concern using technology to further church experience on-ground and online. They also host frequent workshops where they brainstorm on how to advance churching with modern technology. Watching him now, I cannot reconcile Christ Embassy’s adaptive attitude to technological advancement with his newfound Luddism. The advent of groundbreaking technology frequently gives rise to concerns and debates about how far humans should go in the bid to transcend existing limitations, but most of Pastor Chris’ assertions about 5G have been so atrocious that I facepalmed in shock. To think that there was a time that I took his sermons to be the very Word of God, and patterned my life based on his prophetic vision. If he could be so bold about what is clearly out of his range of competence, only God knows how much of what he taught us, his flock, were based on similarly poorly informed ideas There is no point repeating Pastor Chris’ paranoia to offer a rebuttal. Trying to deploy facts to sway people who are already taken by conspiracy theories is usually counter-productive. I have not come across a single conspiracy theorist that can be convinced by facts. They will not only chalk down all your arguments to part of the conspiracy, but you will also end up strengthening their resolve. If Pastor Chris and his followers remain sceptical by the counterarguments offered by the Senior Pastor of Kingsway International Christian Centre, London, Matthew Ashimolowo, there is nothing else anyone can say that will move their needle. We cannot do anything about their beliefs, but we can put some ideas out there for the benefit of those who are not sure of what and how to believe. Of course, Pastor Chris’ cant against 5G technology neatly folds into the history of human reactions against new technology. People have always been threatened by technological changes that change their relationship to time and space because, like it or not, it propels a new way of experiencing the self and the structures of existing relations. The invention of new things from writing to printing, bound books, photography, cars, the telephone, streetlights, the radio, cinema, film, and the Internet has been met with paranoia and moral panic. In the 19th Century, when Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, people thought it would destroy privacy and social relations. According to one writer, because of telephone communication, “we will soon be nothing but transparent heaps of jelly to each other.” Today, people say pretty much the same thing about mobile phones and social media. We now look back nostalgically at the time when the telephone, the same device they said would ruin social relationships, was a far less-threatening means of technologically-mediated communication. In 1825, when the Stockton-Darlington Railway opened in North-east England, people expressed fears as Pastor Chris and his followers are doing today. They said the railway was unsafe, that people would fall out of the contraption because of the speed at which trains could travel. Some thought the human body would melt if people travelled as fast as they could do through the railway. Some concerned individuals forewarned that women’s uteruses would fly out of their bodies if trains reached a speed level of 50 miles per hour. Today, we know better than traffic in such ideas anymore. Again, when electricity was being introduced into homes in the USA, people also protested. They warned that if private homes were to be lit, women and children would be unsafe because they would be visible to potential assaulters. Some of the moral panic that seizes people who fear modern technology also happens because inventions make people see the world differently, and that affects how they relate to religious authority. Religious leaders particularly fear scientific advancement because it changes how people understand the Divine Will. We cannot narrate the history of the Protestant Reformation that changed the history of Europe without talking about the significant role that the invention of print technology played in that event. When Galileo started promoting his heliocentric theories in the 17th Century, the Church opposed the range of his vision because his radical claims challenged religious leaders’ interpretation of the Bible. They did not exactly put their anxieties in the apocalyptic language of the “anti-Christ,” as Pastor Chris is doing, but it was a similar threat of the restructuring of their familiar world. I concede that not every technology has been good for mankind, but one would expect someone of Pastor Chris’ calibre to at least do his homework before spewing 5G truthism and anti-vaccine conspiracy theories. This 5G conspiracy theory and the link with COVID-19 will not be the end of the moral panic that will seize people. Every day, as science and technology advance its scope of possibilities, people will push back for fear of how it will take the bottom out of their world. They are not alone. There are bioethicists who also make important ethical arguments about human invention, and they challenge inventors to put a moral brake on their enthusiasm as they invent. They urge scientists to be responsible with their vision, and yes, we can be reassured they have our backs. What they do not do, is to ask people to pray against vaccines. That will be illiterate. YOU MAY ALSO LIKE: Coronavirus is from God Finally, of this one thing I am now convinced: sometime in the future, when the COVID-19 vaccine has been developed and humans have overcome the disease; when the human race- including members of the future Christ Embassy who will inherit Pastor Chris’ church-are doing wonders with 10G technology, they will look back at this time in history and laugh at their founder in the same way we laugh at the wisdom of those who said if God wanted man to fly he would have given man wings. They will be amused at his claims the same way we are when we read historical accounts that tell us that people were once opposed to inventions like the eyeglasses because they thought disabilities were the will of God, and they were not meant to be corrected. I do not know when that day will be and who will be around to witness it, but I do know that Pastor Chris will be remembered for being the face of 21st Century Luddism in this part of the world. He will be less remembered for the megachurch he built, the scores of young people like me that he nurtured, and even the various healing miracles that he performed. This crass display of ignorance is what will define his legacy. He will go down in history as a prophet, true, but one with a limited vision. Copyright Punch newspaper All rights reserved. Why we withdrew charges against Naira Marley, Gbadamosi ― LASG ON APRIL 8, 20201:29 PMIN NEWS By Henry Ojelu The Lagos State Government today gave conditions for withdrawing the charge brought against controversial hip-hop star, Azeez Fashola popularly known as Naira Marley, former Lagos governorship aspirant, Babatunde Gbadamosi and his wife Folashade for flouting the state Coronavirus social distancing directive. Naira Marley was represented in court by Damilola Ayinde-Marshall alongside Afeez Olabisi while Olawale Akoni SAN alongside Dr Bayo Adaralegbe represented the Babatunde Gbadamosi. Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa SAN alongside O. Awonuga represented the 3rd def, Folasade Gbadamosi. After the announcement of appearance, the DPP, Yakub Oshaola told the court that even though the state has filed a charge before the court, …a few minutes before the court sat, the AG & Comm for Justice, Moyo Onigbanjo SAN forwarded a directive to him that having considered the remorsefulness of the three defendants, he has considered diverting the case out of court based on the defendants fulfilling three conditions. (1) They have to write a formal apology to the Government of Lagos State which will solidify the remorsefulness shown by them (2) They have to give an undertaking in writing that they will continue to comply with the directives of Mr President and Mr Governor which is the subject matter of the case before the court. (3) In view of the danger which the state believes they’ve put themselves by attending a gathering exceeding 20 persons, they must agree to go on 14 days isolation to protect other members of the public from any likely danger. Mr Oshoala also submitted that this is absolutely necessary “in view of the fact that some individuals who travelled from endangered countries where present at the party. He stressed that the state is not a persecutor but it is always ready to enforce the laws that benefit the interest of the public. “If they agree to these conditions, the 4 count charge will be withdrawn and that will be the end of the matter. We will keep it in abeyance.” That’s our submission. In his submission, Akoni said: On behalf of the 2nd def, we wish to express our appreciation to the state, the DPP and to confirm to the court that we accept the three conditions. On his part, Adegboruwa said: ‘On behalf of the 3rd def, we express our appreciation to his excellency, Mr President and the Governor, the AG, The DPP & his team, the Police and most of all the court. The third def is a law-abiding citizen and accepts all that three conditions as stipulated by the DPP. Also speaking, Ayinde-Marshall said: “On behalf of the first defendant, we say a big thank you to the police, the President, Mr Gov and the DPP. My client is a law-abiding citizen too and a strict supporter of government policies. We undertake that we will fulfill the three conditions given to them.” Vanguard Nigeria News |
RaptorX:what gives you the impression that people are not recovering elsewhere in the world? For your information, thousands have recovered in corona raveged Countries already. Nigerians should do away with this ignorant mentality that, people are recovering only in Nigeria. |
SmartyPants:I wonder why most Nigerian youth choose to be purposely daft. Comparative analysis of cases shows we are on the same rate with the rest of the world. But they will never think deep, always displaying stupidity on line |
Vivikema:Leave these people.they foolishly think everyone with corona in those countries are dying. They don't even care to look at the high infections in those countries, compare with recoveries and deaths. How many corona virus cases do we have in Nigeria compare to thousands in those countries. |
Good morning people. So finally, the much talked about palliative measures reached me, courtesy of Lagos State Government. It came in form of rice and beans and was shared throughout my street. Being alone for now, it can push me through the next three days of the lockdown. Wheather it is palliative enough is left to be decided by you. For me, it came as a surprise as I was not really expecting anything.
|
NotNairalandi:Go and read the statement. Your answer is there |
MPESA:unfortunately for him, and indeed other useless governors, there is a federal agency that announces cases. If it were to be announced by states, crook governors would sure be competing with each other for the highest numbers. Shameless lots |
PHijo:Can we then transfer the over hundred cases in Lagos to your home state? Some arguments are not just worth it. I am beginning to think our politicians will soon be announcing non existent cases just to lay hands on corona money. Shameful |
ikabasa1:I tire. One does not know what to believe again. Fake news is all over. The guy was displayed, tribal shamed as boko Haram pardoned almajiri illiterate, recruited in the army by the biased north. Today, another killer has surfaced here. I hope another one will not surface in days ahead. |
Heffalump:Aptly put. This is a correct analysis of what is happening at the war front. |
Humans don’t live in a vacuum and our actions do have consequences. This is moreso when you are a public figure with a loud voice and commanding a sizeable following. Unfortunately we continue to act irresponsibly in a way that poses a danger to ourselves and all of humanity. Such recklessness from those that should know better is unforgiveable. BY DR. OSY AGBOAPR 03, 2020 Femi Fani-Kayode “Simply put the Illuminati and the agents of Satan are at work. The whole thing was planned and contrived over the centuries and they are firmly on course. They are trying to destroy us all and establish a new world order in the name of Lucifer and place us under the rulership of Beelzebub and the Prince of Darkness. Coronavirus or "Covid-19" is part and parcel of that unholy and evil agenda. It is a ravenous beast and an unrelenting, evil plague. It is a demonic spirit that they cultivated and manufactured through the introduction and usage of 5G and that they invoked from the pit of hell.” The above is an excerpt from an article published in the Sahara Reporters titled “COVID-19 And Mark Of The Beast” written by Femi Fani-Kayode and dated April 1,2020. FFK was gracious enough to let us in into the source of his privileged information. Turns out it came mostly from the teachings and revelations of a man known as David Icke. Mr. Icke is a well known British conspiracy theorist whose work he acknowledged to have been reading for many years. Just to be clear, Femi is asking us to ditch science and listen to someone that once described how he visited a psychic and was told how he was placed on earth for a purpose and so would be getting direct messages from the spiritual realm. In another related development, I came across another message trending in Facebook few days ago. A certain faceless Dr.Didier Rault warned Africans not to accept Bill Gates Covid-19 vaccine. The said doctor cautioned that the vaccine contains poison which Westerners plan to use against us. Anyone that paid even a little attention to the news would have had a good laugh at the incredulity of such a baseless claim knowing fully well that no Covid-19 vaccine exist at the moment. You begin to wonder if they were referring to the same Bill Gates who through the help of his foundation was able to help Africa survive the rampage of HIV. They want to convince us that Mr.Gates is now making a vaccine with a purpose to kill all of us. As arsinie as that sounds, you would be baffled to find out that a good number of supposedly educated folks bought into this theory and did in fact participate in the “like and share” of that article. They never stopped for once to question how that could possibly be true before joining in such a malicious disinformation campaign. Covid-19 is a rampaging monster that has brought every nation to its knee. Even the advanced nations of the West with the best technologies and healthcare systems have been up to this moment unsuccessful in taming the deadly virus. Should Africa with her poor health infrastructure face the kind of onslaught that is currently seen in Europe and America, the death toll is predicted to be well into the millions. With no cure yet in the horizon, the only hope is that a vaccine becomes available in the nearest future. That’s why the rich countries of the world are pumping billions into cutting edge medical research to come up with an effective vaccine to immunize against this ailment. A vaccine that if you ask me stands to benefit Africa more than any other continent of the world. Femi Fani-Kayode is not your average Joe. This alumnus of the University of London and Cambridge school of law was also a two-time minister of the Federal Republic. He is a lawyer, an essayist and a poet. Femi also happens to be the son of Adetokunboh Fani-Kayode, the man credited to have successfully moved the motion for Nigeria's independence in 1958. Lately, he has positioned himself as a leading voice in the fight against Northern Oligarchs and with that has built up some following in the Southeast especially among members of IPOB, the Biafra separatist group. When Uncle Femi sits down to pen his thoughts, you have to believe that this erudite fellow has the facts on his side and that he might have carefully weighed the implication of whatever comes out of his mouth. It’s inconceivable that in the said article, our learned friend without any iota of proof pulled no stops in making such a reckless , utterly baseless and frankly dangerous claim. His advice is that when finally the Covid-19 vaccine becomes available, we should stay away because it’s from Satan and the Illuminati. They are mearnt to kill all of us in their quest to dominate the world. To him, the solid facts of science cannot measure up with the devine revelation available to him as a committed disciple of David Icke and his school of conspiracy theories. We have also heard of certain religious figures touting supernatural powers to cure the virus. Some pastors and politicians in Africa have even continued to deny its existence and tried to convince their followers not worry because its just one of those Western hoax. They spread half-truths, anecdotes and outright lies. In the end they end up confusing the uninformed and sowing the seed of cynicism where science and everything else in the universe become suspect. The dangerous implication of what he is doing is that if and when this badly needed vaccine becomes available , many who would have listened to his sermon and would refuse to be vaccinated thereby putting all of at more risk. You can now see why one cannot afford to ignore Uncle Femi even when he spews gibberish. Being a physician at the forefront of the fight against this deadly virus, the anger and disappointment is unfathomable. Our generation may be too young to have experienced the devastating effect of such crippling disease like Polio before the vaccine became available. Today, the disease now belongs mostly in the history books. Its already a hard job trying to convince anti-vaxxers about the safety and efficacy of a vaccine , now we have to go a step further to explain why it’s not a biological weapon sent by Satan and the Illuminati. No thanks to FFK and his ilk. As citizens of the world, it is both a duty and a responsibility to be a bit more circumspect in what we say or put out for others to consume. We must not hear from you if you have no proof that the theory you propagate is in fact true. It borders on criminality when such distortion has a tendency to sway the public into taking irrational decisions. The sadest part to all these is that in the end, the most vulnerable among us are most often the victims of these misinformation campaigns. [quote author=Jumlek2411 post=88074913]It's disgusting to learnt countries like US and France are having issue on Nose mask, can they be producing that themselves? With their status in d world. Thank God Nigeria is now producing it now in Aba. China will continue to ride d world.[/quote"]France has only four companies that manufacture masks and they are currently running 24 hours a day, guarded by security officials. They have increased production from 15 million masks per month to 40 million. But that’s still just a fraction of the 40 million masks that public health officials say France now needs per week to tackle the coronavirus pandemic." The quote is from the news up there. The situation just overwhelm the production capacity. |
Okuda:Giving the choices of living in Yemen, Syria, Sudan, Afghanistan etc, I am sure majority of people will prefer Nigeria. In as much as the country is not doing great, it is still better do many and we shouldn't just believe what people say about our Country. It is still the only Country I have and I value it regardless of the situation. Regards |
Okuda:some times it is good to think deeply when you read a piece before condemning. Don't you think people go abroad for holidays, businesses and other things? Is everyone living there? Some may be genuinely trapped and have no way to come home. Again, for you to justify your one sided or myopic opinion, you forget that diaspora is not only Europe and USA, or any greener pastures countries. There are Countries that Nigeria is doing far better than, and Nigerians are in those Countries. Do not just conclude. Remember it is for those willing to come home and no one is forced. |
Agugbadin:so you think every Nigerian abroad is living there? Some went there for business trips, holidays, etc and are actually trapped due to travel bans. In any case you clearly read that, it is for those willing to go home and nobody is forced. All the countries who evacuated their citizens from Nigeria too was based on who was willing to go. There are still Americans in this Country. |
Good move. Some people were trapped in other countries as they not necessarily living there. Any citizen willing to come home should not be denied the opportunity. When USA and other countries were evacuating their citizens, the hypocrites above praised them on how they value their citizens, Nigeria is doing same and they are already blabbing. How can a Nation grow with this level of hatred? |
Social media disadvantages |
So far so good. |
frugal:Can we stop this ignorance already? No citizen of a Country is stopped from entering his country if he or she wishes. This has Legal backing especially for countries like Nigeria who are signatory to 'No citizen is stateless' treaty. It doesn't matter what they circumstances are. The governments of Osun and Ogun handled this expertly. Those people were conveyed from Ogun boarder to Osun using police escorts and were isolated. It is from the camp that they are being tested. |
This has all shades of fake news. For one, the soldier who kill the man was identified according to government and security sources. How come you are insinuating the same soldier was killed by youths? What is the source of your news or are you on ground there? Where are the pictures of the 'bloody warri'?. Let us be a bit cautious of what will circulate. |
Despite increasing cases of COVID19-19 in Nigeria, and the attendant closure of the nation’s borders to curb spread, the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has said it is embarrassing to deny citizens entry into the country. Mr Aregbesola while answering questions from journalists at the Presidential Taskforce briefing on Thursday said every citizen has the right to return to his fatherland “at any time”. ”Every citizen of every nation has the right to return to his fatherland whenever he or she wishes regardless of the situation, even at war,” he said. Nigerians have raised concerns over the entry of 127 returnees from Cote d’Ivoire last week out of which 12 tested positive to the COVID-19 virus. The returnees, mostly from Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire’s densely populated economic capital, had returned home to avoid the planned lockdown of the city by the Ivorian government. Following the record of the first death out of 165 cases in the country as of Saturday, the government locked down the city on Monday, barring movement except for people on essential duties. The Nigerian government as of March 18, placed restrictions on international travels by closing the airport and land borders to contain the spread of the disease in the country. However, some persons have reprotedly returned into the country through the land borders. How the returnees came in On Friday, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, reached out to Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun, informing him of six buses conveying indigenes of the state, who were stranded at the state’s boundary with Benin Republic. The development, PREMIUM TIMES learnt, was a result of the closure of all international entry points to the state by the state government. According to a statement issued on Saturday by Osun State’s commissioner for information, Funke Egbemode, Mr Oyetola was appreciative of the support granted the returnees, “who were not only allowed access to pass through the state but were also escorted by security operatives from the state.” The returnees, mostly from Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire’s densely populated economic capital, had returned home to avoid the planned lockdown of the city. Following the record of the first death out of 165 cases in the country as of Saturday, the government locked down the city on Monday, barring movement except of people on essential duties. Ismail Omipidan, the chief press secretary to the Osun governor, had told our reporter on the telephone that on their arrival in the state, the returnees were led to their hometown, Ejigbo, “but restricted from mingling with the people as they were camped separately”. “The 127 of them were camped within the dormitory of a high school in the town and they were barred from moving out of the camp. The government has since been responsible for their welfare while their samples were taken for screening for the coronavirus disease. “However, on Monday evening, results of 24 out of the 127 samples taken indicated that three were already positive. So as at Tuesday, we were still awaiting the results for the remaining 103.” Findings by PREMIUM TIMES revealed that late on Tuesday when the results of additional 47 of the 103 returnees were released by the accredited testing centre at the Redeemed University, Ede, nine more tested positive, increasing the number of confirmed cases in the state to 14. ‘No human is stateless’ During Thursday’s briefing, Mr Aregbesola said the Nigerian government signed an international treaty “that says no human being is stateless”. ”We have signed into an international treaty that says no human being is stateless,” he said. ”We cannot deny our citizens entry into our nation. If we do that it will be embarrassing and not speak well of our nation.” He also said measures are in place to ensure every returnee is isolated upon arrival. “It is difficult for us to aggregate our responsibility to our nationals who return by land border. When they get to our land border, what the accredited officials of state do is to first determine they are Nigerians. ”Once the issue of their citizenship is determined, the governments are contacted to find out if they could isolate them in their isolation centres,” he said. https://premiumtimes.ecwid.com/ |

Jobio1:listen to yourself. Is it the woman that will declare whether she is negative or the authorities that carried out the scientific test? She is positive based on test results, period. |
Please kindly share your experience as the lockdown takes effect. Are you an essential worker? How was it going to work today? Were you stopped and questioned? How was the conduct of the enforcement team? Let us share our experiences and be in the knowledge of what is happening generally. |
Ustec:I wonder why she is putting up such antics |
I did not believe the woman one bit when she was ranting about not having the virus, as if she tested herself. She should better fully comply for the good of all. |
