This is one of the positive things Wike's struggle is bringing to Rivers people

NCDC to Governor Wike: Thank You for your firm, strong, committed and personally-led response to COVID-19

Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) ,Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu has commended the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike for his firm and personal leadership to check the spread of coronavirus in Rivers State.

Speaking during a meeting between Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike and officials of Nigeria Center for Diseases Control (NCDC) at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Sunday, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu said that Rivers State is important in the fight to stop the spread of the virus.

He said: "This is a working visit. I want to thank you for your firm, strong, committed and personally led response to COVID-19 in Rivers State.

"Rivers is one of the most important gate-ways into the country. One of the most important economies in the country . So, Rivers is important , not only to you but to the entire country.

"We thank you very much for your leadership and we need your leadership to continue in order for us to continue doing our work nationally."

The NCDC Director General said that his team is in Rivers State to engage with the State Public Health Team to consolidate on the successes on the fight against coronavirus.

"This is actually a joint team. I have come with the officer in charge of World Health Organisation . We have come together to offer our support.

"Your Excellency, you have an excellent public health team to which I have an excellent working relationship with. We have a close technical working relationship.

"The purpose of this visit is to engage with the team and understand their challenges and continue driving that close coordination," he said.

The Director General of NCDC noted that because of the unique nature of the virus, all stakeholders must work in Unity.

He said: "The unique nature of this virus is that it is a global pandemic. None of us can do this on our own. No country can do this on its own.

"We share information across the states to make sure that everyone is informed as they can possibly be. We share Information on new developments, strategies, what works and what doesn't work.

"Whether it is is in detection, prevention and treatment, our role as NCDC is to make sure that our technical colleagues , are able to respond at all levels and are supported in any way with the expertise they need."

He said that because the prolonged lockdown cannot continue indefinitely, stakeholders must begin to work towards gradually reopening the economy without endangering the population.

The NCDC leader also urged the private sector to focus more on helping the states to build their capacity to respond to the virus.

Responding on behalf of the Rivers State Government, Health Commissioner, Prof Princewill Chike said that Governor Wike has strengthened the Public Health System of the state to fight coronavirus.

He said before the coronavirus pandemic, the Rivers State Government was already battling Lassa Fever, Monkey Pox and HIV/AIDS.

He said as a result of the proactive leadership of Governor Wike, the State has no current confirmed case of coronavirus. He said the two cases in the state have been treated and discharged.

"Since January, Rivers State has had two cases of coronavirus. A 19 year model and a 62 year old retiree. They have been treated and discharged. All the 214 persons that had contact with them were placed under surveillance.

"Except for two cases, all other contacts have exited Isolation," he said.

The Health Commissioner said that the proactive approach of Governor Wike in tackling coronavirus centres, early detection, prevention and treatment.

He said: "We give kudos to our Governor for his proactive approach at tackling coronavirus . It has been successful. The Rivers State Executive Council set up a sensitization committee to sensitise and inform the people on ways to prevent the spread of coronavirus."

The Rivers State Government said that it has PCR Machines, but they are devoted to the treatment of other major ailments before the outbreak of coronavirus.

The Health Commissioner said that another set of PCR machines to be devoted to the testing and treatment of COVID-19 is on its way to the state.

He also announced that all public hospitals in different local government areas of the state have COVID-19 centres, developed by the Wike Administration.

He said: "They have been developed to hold suspect cases before the intervention of the State Rapid Response Team on COVID-19. "

The Rivers State Government called on the Federal Government to take immediate steps to stop oil companies from violating the State Executive Order on restriction of movement.

He said: "The way some oil companies breach the Executive Order issued by the Rivers State Governor to restrict movement in and out of the State can jeopardise the fight against coronavirus. The Rivers State Government needs the support of the State Federal Government in this regard. "

The Rivers State Government also requested the establishment of a functional Federal Laboratory to handle coronavirus testing. The Government said even though it is in the process of setting its major laboratory, the strategic place of Rivers State as the nation's oil and gas hub, requires a federal testing centre.

Simeon Nwakaudu,

Special Assistant to the Rivers State Governor, Electronic Media.

Excellent and commendable. However, we don't need the unnecessary drama and crude press conferences. What does giving Lagos 10b and rivers nothing got to do with all these? Or I don't take order from the president ish. All those talks are looking for unnecessary fight is not needed. Arresting workers on essential duties and publicly throwing tantrums over it wasn't the right. And he only started what he could not finish in the long run.

For your information, that is the constitutional procedure in case of uncontrollable security situation. If a state governor decides to sponsor crime against government, what do you think will happen?

Oga leave this noise. The people in the know how have acted accordingly and you are here talking. Firstly, the FG acted wisely and maturely unlike the unrefined Wike. It doesn't take FG anything to remove Wike or render him powerless through a state of emergency due to security issues, if by any chance there is Intel that he is sponsoring militants. The highest thing is people will make noise online for two days and it will be over, yet government will do what it wants.

Period!
from independence till GEJ to Buhari now, nothing has changed. Nigeria is still a poor country despite all the potentials to grow. GEJ was a self Acclaimed man of peace.but this came at an enormous price of foolishness.this so-called man of peace handled Nigeria to a man that threatened to make the govt ungovernable for him, claimed that a war against bokoharam is a war against the north, said that Bokoharam should be pampered,a man without certificates,a man that had always made incitful speech and also been a sympatiser to Bokoharam.goodluck Ebele Jonathan plunged nigeria into untold hardship and death sentence by handing over power to an illiterate jihadist.GEJ had all it took to stop this man legally or illegally but he failed to do so
Goodluck Ebele Jonathan brought badluck to Nigeria and is the most foolish president and leader we have ever experienced.
The op doesn't know he is the foolish one here. Jonathan was booted out of power by electorates due to gross incompetence. He did the right thing by conceding. If Buhari is failing, he should be held accountable or people who voted him should blame themselves. And mind you op Buhari's incompetence does not exonerate GEJ's incompetence in anyway

most of them lost the capacity to comprehend a simple information, let alone analyze it. The government is struggling with the corona pandemic internally with limited facilities and resources. Even if you have the money for building facilities, it can never be done under two weeks as in developed countries. Additionally, the government is bringing them back in batches, so what is the fuse about. We all read how Americans were stranded at the Lagos airport, but most Nigerians think this things are done with a wand of magic.

Bros let's just pray we don't see a surge of patients, that would cripple the medical system and when deaths will start to rise. I hope this doesn't happen. It's not like people are not recovering in those developed countries. Let's take a look.

Germany: 127,000 cases, 64,000 recovered. That's 50% recovered so far.

Nigeria : 323 cases, 85 recovered. That's 26% recovered so far.

If u want to check the death rates

Germany: 127,000 cases, 3,000 deaths. That's 2.3% death rate.

Spain: 169,000 cases, 17,000 deaths. That's 10% death rate.

USA: 561,000 cases, 22,000 deaths. That's 3.9% death rate.

Moreover, if LASG have the cure, why the lockdown then. Let people return to work. If anyone develop symptoms, report to LASG and get healed within days.

Adelani Adepegba, Abuja

Former state governors convicted of money laundering and corruption did not benefit from the presidential amnesty granted to 2,600 inmates nationwide because they did not meet the requirements, Saturday PUNCH has learnt.

It was gathered that the former governors were not considered for a reprieve because they were convicted of corruption and money laundering aside from the fact that they did not meet some of the criteria stipulated by the Presidential Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy, which advised the President on inmates and ex-convicts deserving pardon.

There had been speculations that high-profile persons, including ex-governors serving various jail terms at the Kuje Custodial Centre, Abuja and other prison facilities might benefit from the pardon announced in Abuja on Thursday, by the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola.

Prominent persons serving various jail terms include former governors of Abia and Plateau states, Senator Orji Kalu and Joshua Dariye; former governor of Taraba State, Jolly Nyame; and a former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh.

While Kalu, a serving All Progressives Congress senator, was convicted of N7.1bn money laundering and jailed for 12 years in 2019, Dariye, who was a former senator representing Plateau central district, was jailed for 16 years for N1.126bn fraud in 2018.

Nyame, who was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, was convicted and jailed for 14 years for diverting N1.64bn during his tenure as governor of Taraba State between 1999 and 2007.

Metuh is serving a seven-year jail term for illegally receiving N400m from the office of the national security adviser. He was sentenced by Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in February.

Meanwhile, Aregbesola had said those considered for pardon include inmates who are 60 years and above, those suffering from ill health likely to end in death, serving at least three years with less than six months left, with mental issues, as well as with options of fine not exceeding N50,000.

While the minister did not mention those to be freed, he said the amnesty did not apply to inmates sentenced for violent extreme offences such as terrorism, kidnapping, armed banditry, rape, human trafficking, and culpable homicide.

The spokesman, Nigeria Correctional Service, Chuks Njoku, noted that the former governors were convicted of corruption and related offences, adding that by virtue of this, they were not eligible for pardon or clemency.

He dismissed reports that some of the high-profile inmates could be released on account of their age, clarifying that the dates of birth being bandied about did not tally with the NCS’ official birth records of the ex-governors.

Njoku said, “We have our criteria and they are not qualified (for pardon). They don’t fall under any of the categories. If you were convicted, you must have served some years and you must be of good character and must have shown remorse.

“It is not just about age; there are many of them who are old but they are not qualified. So, for anyone to benefit, they must have served for some time and their crime must not be a capital offence. They (ex-governors) are not qualified because they just came (into the custodial centre) and some of them are still on appeal.”
