Nigerians and their economists  grin

For me it is a values problem; until we as individuals, families, religious bodies, professionals respect and value each other, our development would be slow and hard.

This is why a leader loots blatantly without remorse
A teacher who is suppose to impart knowledge threatens to fail his students if they don't pay for handouts in cash or kind

Social capital will improve business; Like Depilot or someone mentioned we need to do what we can to make things work, make our leaders accountable.

@Justcash

u have the right passion, but the wrong premise. . .the federal govt in nigeria,or any govt anywhere in the world cannot bring about development
i will give u a simple example that u are familiar with by now. . .NITEL and the GSM companies
NITEL with the market to itself,a behemoth that should have been able to make billions of dollars providing basic phone services to the populace, could barely maintain 2million landlines and a pathetic amount of cellphone lines. . .it was corrupt and inept. .slow to adopt new technologies
now contrast the change since GSM operators were licensed in 2001. . .we now have achieved a compound growth rate of over 2000% in the first couple of yrs in terms of   mobile and voice growth. . .it has now slowed to a rate of 54% as at last yr,but it is still the fastest growth rate anywhere on earth
telecomms and communication now account for 3.4% of GDP up from virtually 0% in 2001.

the reason i tell u all these is that, the govt doesnt have the money to do all that is needed to be done in Nigeria. . .if u bring in $1trillion dollars today and pour it into developmental needs of the country,it will swallow it and ask for more. .so knowing all these it means that we have to attract capital from outside our shows, since we dont have enough of it internally
how does capital come?. . .BY making sure u have rules and regulation clearly spelt out, then keeping the govt out of it. .or at the barest minimum. . .
Govt now controls NEPA. .any surprise that its not working?
look at N.N.PC. . .exxon mobil is valued at over$300bln dollars. . .while our own govt controlled N.N.P.C does not even own a functioning refinery,
meanwhile if u float N.N.P.C today on the stock exchange, get govt out. . .it will now attract private capital that will help it build refineries, invest in what needs to be done,at the same time cut corruption out of it and u can begin to see its valuation rise to rival even Petrobras or exxon

multiply this template throughout the nigerian economy and u will get rapid growth and development to the tune of 12%per annum or more. . .
but how many of us really understand this? some people even argue for more government control or socialist policies like fuel subsidy and the like
the developed countries which u cite, all they do is have strong laws, and attract capital. . .thats it. . .it dont matter from uk to japan thats how they do it,because any economic system dominated by the govt is bound to fail

so lets hope they de-regulate and privatize this N.N.P.C soon, govt should get out of the business of importing or subsidizing fuel,
power production and distribution should be liberalized, especially this issue of govt setting the price of power
roads and road construction should be concessioned for the most part
in agriculture there should be emphasis on direct loans to commercial farmers and improved skills, again a policy thrust should be done in conjuction with banks
and govt should then tighten its tax collection abilities, because once the economy starts growing rapidly, govt major source of income should be from taxation
so it should be able to collect taxes from all businesses in the country, from small to the corporation.

Simple solutions my friends. World bank country Director recently released figures to show that Nigeria is one of the most difficult places on the face of earth to set up a business , hmmm ! undecided
what would take you 24hrs to achieve in a place like Canada would take you 24weeks to achieve in Nigeria cos of archaic policies and lack of infrastructure- light, water, rail and cheap telecom. Funny thing is, date shows that the easiest countries to set up businesses(business friendly climates) are the fastest developing.

World bank can stick their propaganda where the sun don't shine at all. We don't need them. Nigeria doesn't need any nation or any help from any nation on this planet. If things are done properly, we are a self reliance economy and we've been that way since beginning. Food and education for Nigerians old and young and see where Nigeria will be in no time. All the money the so called world bank borrowed Nigeria can't be accounted for yet Nigerians are still surviving. World bank only loan you money for your natural resources simple. Nothing more. If you don't open your resources to western companies, you don't get no loan.

Re: Why Is Nigeria So Difficult To Develop? by Depilot(m): 12:40am On Dec 15, 2009
It's very challenging to develop Nigeria because people like yourself and myself are not doing anything, but complain and use corrupt leaders as an excuse.

It takes the entire village to raise a bright kid; I think it also takes everyone of us to see a well developed Nigeria.

Many of us are too busy and too focus on only making money in Nigeria; none of us is willing to volunteer to contribute anything toward developing this country.

May be this is the right moment for each and everyone of us to pause and ask ourselves this question:
I'm now 25 yrs old or 30 yrs old or 40 yrs old or 50 yrs old, through out my life as a Nigerian, what have I ever done for this country?
If you can not come up with at least 2 things, you're part of the problem.

You need not to steal money from Nigeria to be corrupt.

We need to develop ourselves mentally before attempting to the develop Nigeria.
Re: Why Is Nigeria So Difficult To Develop? by Justcash(m): 4:26am On Dec 15, 2009
The Problem with Nigeria is the lack of our government's political will to develop the country.
The single and most important pre-requisite for a nations development is the investment sector and climate of a country. For a country like Nigeria, many people seem not to understand that being literate (Educationally) does not really count anymore. The huge number of graduates in Nigeria vindicates my assertion. What matters more now is economic empowerment, which will serve as a catalyst for the growth of everyother sector. To provide this economic empowerment several things needs to be on ground, ranging from right governmental policies to the availability of infrastructures. These are what the governmnent should put in place before things will start adjusting naturally.
A friend of mine that is a medical doctor once thought about introducing mobile medical clinics in Nigeria, after spending several years in Germany. He looked at the pros- and cons-, then quietly gave up the idea. I asked him why. He told me straight up that his cost of offering the service will outweigh the profit he intends to make. He mentioned the erratic nature of availability of fuel during industrial crisis in the oil sector , Lack of protection from armed robbers when moving around cities, the high cost of repairs of his mobile hospital trucks and vans will gulp alot of money due to bad roads etc. This is exactly what I am saying. Government does not need to embark on the provision of everything. They can just make the environment suitable and make some effort to encourage investments, and things will naturally take their places. Like my Dr Friend, I have seen more than 30 Nigerian born doctors with similar Ideas and adequate funds to do same. Ofcourse all of you know that people don't make money to throw it around.
Entrepreneurial Investment covers every sector of the economy, Eductaion, security, health, etc. The adequacy of These things can easily be achieved if the Nigerian government is sincere and ready to allow them to come.

Development is intellectual my friend. It's not having 90 floor buildings etc, If Nigerians have access to quality education first, We can get many things done including eradication of ignorance. It is ignorance that brought about the quota system thereby limiting the nation's development to the decision of a few instead of 150mil.

We have millions of Nigerians that are pro-developmental. As a matter of fact, there are millions of Nigerians home and abroad that will explode if they are given the chance and means to do what they can do. Of what use is intellect if it not put in good use? We are on Nairaland talking about developmental issues that can really contribute to the change of Nigeria, yet there is no chance or opportunity to apply them practically. What is the use of quality education without an enabling environment to practicalise what you learnt? People go around shouting "illiteracy". For example, Do you know that when an illiterate is meant to produce a business plan before he/she can open and run a business, he/she will be forced to learn how to make adequate plans for his/her business? What is on ground to ensure literacy? you are under-estimating the development boom that will happen in Nigeria if simple basic infrastructures are put in place.
Illiteracy is not Nigeria's problems, it is the lack of government's political will to ensure development.

Who ever said development was easy?

First and foremost, before we can think about developing anything, we have to make sure our population has access to the basic necessities needed to live a long healthy life. At the same time, we need to have the proper infrastructure to facilitate this development. We need roads so farmers can truck their goods to market. We need railroads so we can transport coal to power plants. . . . . . I can go on and on, but until Nigeria gets a MAJOR overhaul with its infrastructure, you all can keep dreaming about development.

the problem with an over educated Nigerian is from my point of view, we know macro come micro economics, we give lectures day in day out , symposium iyen nko, but when it comes to the nitty gritty of putting bread and butter on the table for average fellow citizen we score Nil , zero. from Independence, we have failed to better the ordinary citizen. do you guys recon all the above points our so called politicians do not know?

You are wrong my brother. To get people in the private sector that will put bread and butter on the table for ordinary and average Nigerians , the government needs to simply make them show up and do those things. The way Nigeria is now, it will be difficult to get such people to do that. We are in a capitalist world. Nothing goes for free. Once I am given a fair environment to make money, I can involountarily put bread and butter on the table of average Nigerians by providing jobs and embarking on Coperate social responsibility drives to boost my competitiveness in the industry. What GLO and co are doing is just a piece of cake compared to what can be achieved through a favourable investment climate.
Your last statement is exactly what keeps me wondering.

From all indications if we have the money to provide these things, development will be achieved right? Nigeria has the money, why is our development difficult?
This is why I asked why such roads are difficult to build in Nigeria to encourage businesses? Why are the basic infrastructures so difficult to provide? Are Nigerians allergic to such provisions? We actually have the money to get these things, but despite the allocation of huge public funds by the govt, things are never gotten right. Why?

@ tensor777: Apart from an inadequate primary health care sector, we have alot of literacy schemes in Nigeria, both by the Government and private sectors. If you are not aware, we have an abundance of technical skills that have become redundant and obsolete due to lack of practical application. Primary health care will be good only if it will be free because at the moment many Nigerians cannot afford it.
It still boils down to my point that with the provision of a good macro-environment, entrepreneurs will utilise those technical skills, Literacy schemes will become an effective way of instilling and upgrading skills to be applied in these entrepreneurial ventures, and primary health care can become affordable when wage rate increases, improves due to high employment rate and expands due to industrial competition.
Re: Why Is Nigeria So Difficult To Develop? by AjanleKoko: 8:00am On Dec 15, 2009
Methinks it's not only Nigeria; it's an African thing. Nigeria is just top drawer because of our phenomenal oil dollars ~$400bn wasted over 40 years.
Countries with stupendous wealth in mineral resources, like Nigeria and Congo, merely excerbate the problem; go everywhere around Africa, and you see the same old signs of horrendous government inactivity, almost like some sort of colonial legacy.

I think the tragedy is right there in our heritage. Mahathir Mohammed's recent dig that Nigerians are people without shame was a bit unfair. We do have shame, but are severely conflicted in our mindset that we cannot but produce appalling results. We all know the right thing, but are seriously constrained from doing it, because of our many issues around ethnicity, religion, etc., which produce the desperate, selfish mindset for which Nigerians are known. A bit better, I'd say, than the shiftless, indolent, blissful mien for which other black Africans are known.

Remember the story in the bible where God got so pissed with the Israelites that he condemmned them to wander in the wilderness for 40 years, till a whole generation expired? I think we Africans all have a hard lesson to learn. And we will continue to agonize until we get it.

because nigerians have a retrogressive way of thinking. Its not the government, from 1960 - 2009, there hv been many governments who are nigerians - no single government that is exemplary. the guy in aso rock & Govt offices are NIGERIANS ruling with their mindset.

Next we see the average nigerian who is a law braker (compared to the european or american counterparts). I was driving in lagos the other day, one guy started motoring a BRT lane!!! which was clearly marked out for d buses only; now there is no valid reason to do that. in europe even if ppl are in a hurry, they wont do that. so why the marked difference.

Your country men kidnap for money, steal government money into swiss bank accounts, do money rituals (why not as rampant in europe?), break driving laws, embezzle infrastructure development funds perpetually (bank manager newly nabbed with 3.1 million usd at airport); these are nigerians who are later put in power. so the reason for nigeria's under development is a no brainer!!!

In nigeria ppl wear seatbelt for Lasma but in europe ppl do so for the benefits.

for u to understand why nigeria is not developing, you must understand that nigeria is made up of the retrogressive minds of the whole population (a generalisation of course - but u get wat i mean).
