Funny thing is that the Venturi principle tends to indicate that there is a reduced pressure at the intersection accompanied by a higher fluid velocity. So when water gushes out, it's more of a reduced pressure, high velocity than increased pressure, increased velocity. The Venturi principle is what the technique of reducing Cross-sectional area to improve flow is based on.

This will bring the question "are you saying pressure is inversely proportional to velocity?.

Yes (absolutely). The desired increased pressure is just to create a larger pd during flow which increases velocity. Static pressure is the equalised pressure in the system when no flow occurs (velocity=0). flow occurs, coz of a pressure drop across the pressurised tap and the unpressurised part discharging to the environment. According to bernoulli the pd is proportional to velocity head which is the flow we see. The venturri effect upstream adds RAM

(UPDATE:The best would be to run a bigger pipe into a manifold header with buffer e.g. 6" diameter 1meter long pipe @ house entry point for onward distribution. This would eliminate a lot of frictional loses that occur on the walls of the pipe during flow. The next best/most economical would be running something like 2" feeder line from tank to house entry point then reducing it b4 delivery to various consumers. This gives you all the other benefit at the least cost)

the present discussion on water pressure issues on duplexes is an interesting topic, in my residence, the tan k is diecly placed on the roof, water pressures to the shower heads is inadequate, the LL installed 1 of those pressure pumps after much complaint from the residents, and it somewhat remedied the problem...albeit not satisfactorily....presently there is what i suspect to be internal leakage, as water is dripping from 1 of the walls outside.....also the main tap outside, once that one is turned on...water supply ceases totally on the first floor of the duplex

going forward, am about commencing my own build, also a duplex, and am worried about how to prevent such an issue from my build.
i also would prefer having the water tan k on the roof...if i can, the 2nd option am considering is making the security houise a 1 storey build and placing the water tan k there.

some plumber said the present practise of first dropping the supply from the tank to the ground first before sending it up again is wrong, that he prefers running the water supplypipes up in the ceiling/last blocks on the roof...and the dropping them down to the shower heads/water taps...ie the bathrooms....
has anyone tried this....what are the pros and cons?

also mny people recommended using 1 '' pipes to serve as supply from the overhead tank, am thinking 2'' should even work better is creating the differential needed for adequate flow,... am i right in this assumption?
i detest those pressure pumps, and i would want to totally avoid it in my build.

Sometime back on this thread we tried to discourage Agarawu from placing the tank on top of a building for good reason. You can read up on that. But if you must, then the top of the tank has to be on same level with the roof kingpost which would make the tank conspicuous.

Regarding your plumber's recommendations, I think it wouldn't be visually appealing, (same reason people dropdown and tunnel the utility power lines from the last pole via underground to their meter). Also rain will want to follow the piping to ur wall/ceiling. (Assuming the tank is not on top of the building. )

As per piping going down then up again, as long as you have minimum (ie 2, max 3) elbows, the drop will be insignificant

Finally by using 2" supply (feeder) line then reducing it closer to the consumer you create a venturri effect which improves flow

Water demand is not a factor that reduce pressure head. Water demand will affect your storage capacity

Max water demand is the single greatest factor considered in pipe design (as well as in almost every other application sizing, the max demand is given the greatest consideration) .
Check Darcy–Weisbach equation.
Infact Serghide Explicit Equation or the Swamee-Jan equations is used in determining optimal (cost/benefit) pipe diameter for max flowrate to prevent excessive pd.

I just finished my lintel using previously used wood that the carpenter supplied. That has proven to be the one single biggest mistake of my build. The money saved has now diminished in my eyes and any saving will be used up in extra plastering and chiping to make it work.

Now I know that your question was on decking and mine example was lintel work.

The planks are of different types. The more expensive hard wood types (around NGN1,500/14ft)can be reused upto 5x while the cheap soft wood types (NGN1,000/14ft) can't coz the elements (sun & rain) destroys them rapidly. In fact I left this type in the open for just 2weeks b4 sheltering them for another 9week only to discover at the end that they were practically useless.

@Kola, you're right. It's 1 inch.

The height of the tank would not make a difference in this case since the plumber still dropped the feeder pipe to the bottom before distributing.

I still need ideas from people who don't have this issue in their builds- how did you resolve it?

Raising the tank stand height will make a load of difference by increasing the hydrostatic pressure available. Also increasing the diameter of the supply (feeder) line from the overhead tank to the house, then reducing just before it enters the house might help.
Also confirm if the difference in the pressure from the shower and from the wash hand bowl at the same floor is significant ie if the hand wash flows with good enough pressure.

There's no need for a step-down actually.

Since it's solar (sorry I didn't specify that initially) the inverter just needs to supply 110 to a whole house surge protector and then to the breaker box.

Update: just wanted to show there are still split phase inverters. You won't appreciate this flexibility until a friend/relation brings you an expensive toy that can't be used until... coz itz 220v

Egun I dont see why this is not doable. Can one place the stepdown/ converter by the change over / Nepa room....so that way the voltage conversion is first done by converting 240v from the pole to the 120v needed in the house?

It might be more efficient if he draws/connects to the public 11kv and steps it down to 110v. Although the utility comp will change a higher tarrif(industrial tarrif), but your power will be more available and stable enough to run sensitive equipment

Sorry about that. I can imagine the cost of keeping your men on site without doing any work. Travel cost and the risks. I've been there before and I've placed a caveat on it. For now, my job is only limited to areas within 20km radius from H52.

Some corporate buildings in 9ja use the 110/220V split phase connection. There are wall sockets that have both and u can choose 110/220 by either horizontal/vertical positioning.

It will offer you flexibility

Water Issue | Wrongly Sized Inspection Chamber

Here's another culprit found on a site I just diagnosed. Their fence is giving way and we found out that the inspection chamber is blocked and the water is pushing the fence.

I'll show you the fix later on this thread. I have a site inspection to carry out.

I am having something somewhat similar. My neighbours' inspection chamber is leaking and the water is flowing into mine from under the fence. Since its a commercial (tenant) house I would prefer to handle it from my side of the fence without involving my neighbours if its possible to.

@abdulwatecx , the problem is this I didn't notice that the dpc of the house was low after plastering inside the house . I find out that was was coming inside each time there is little drop of rain . I talked to the engineer. He said he was sick and didn't know they only used one block for dpc . Now what should I do to stop the water entering into the rooms ? How can I increase the dpc of the house should I go for landscaping even if I know I have only one block left ?

There is this company in Lagos that claimed it could install some sort of elastomer insulation sheet to insulate my bathroom (and possibly dpc during construction) against moisture when I had the issue of moisture from adjacent bathroom wall causing peeling and discoloration of the paint in the next room.

Good. I'm interested in the 12V fridge. Is it available in Nigeria? How much? Can you link me up with a seller in Lagos? If possible I want to eliminate the use of my inverter and go totally DC as much as possible. If not for TV and other AC appliances, DC is just cheaper on solar in the long run.

I imagine a 12V/24V compressor on the fridge will require a bigger guage wire to prevent loses due to wire resistance. Except u get 48V+ compressor motor, it wouldn't be efficient.

Personally I prefer to import a high seer inverter a/c, fridge or washing machine unit from amazon. Start with 24 seer & You will be surprised on the efficiency

Me: I never say NO where am not an expert.

Its a gamble shaa. Worse case I knock everything down before it gets to decking slab. So its either I save or lose 4-5mil.
