FabulousAutos:Did you mean 30 litres per 100 kilometers? |
I own and have driven the 02-06 camry. I have equally driven the avensis (06) model. The camry is roomier and has a better pull. Maintenance is same for both cars. Both have bullet proof engines from Toyota. However, if you like fiddling with knobs and buttons, then u might prefer the avensis. The avensis also has dual air conditioning controls in that the passenger can independently regulate his air conditioning setting. The avensis with the D4D engine can match a camry for pull though. The avensis also has a stiffer suspension setting unlike the camry which has a softer spring and suspension setting. There is nothing sporty about the two cars. Both are extremely heavy underpowered sedans. Their weight to power ratio is nothing to write home about. The stripped head bolt issue in the camry was restricted to a batch of engines made in 2003. It was an isolated case. In all though, I like the looks of the avensis and it's suspension setting but I prefer the roomy interior of the camry, bigger boot space and it's higher ground clearance. |
Screeching especially when braking, spinning your tires when accelerating, taking bends and corners at high speeds, driving on loose gravel or soil (they are highly abrasive). Coldplay abeg no vex oo. Apologies. ![]() |
Nice one Gazzuzz. |
Happy Xmas safari girl. Hopefully one of ur wonderful writeups will get turned to a movie some day. Your style of writing is nice. |
I am not forcing anyone to accept this post. Just read and waka pass. Oil change interval has always been a difficult point to agree on by car manufacturers and users. If using the recommended oil by your manufacturer, stick close to their recommended OCI. You can never go wrong there. Changing oil by the number of months it has stayed in your engine for me is a bloody waste of money and oil. Are you aware that standby generators (in big hospitals, establishments, factories, ships, boats etc), can spend six months or more idle before they are ever put to use. They are started with the same oil in them. These engines have equipment check-sheets that must be signed off when in use and nowhere does it state there that the oil must be changed after six months or one year of non use. The oil is changed after a certain number of hours and not a certain number of months. These are heavy engines that churn out more power than most cars can ever imagine and run for hours on end if need be. Boat owners who do not use their boats during the winter still crank their engines in the summer (after about six months), with the same oil in them as long it hasn't exceeded the hour limit and ride off to wherever they fancy. Mechanics want you to keep coming back so they spew that 2-3 months, 3000 mile/kilometer garbage. I personally do not drive up to 500 miles in a month these days as i have moved very close to my office and most times walk to work. Sometimes my car sits parked for more than 3 weeks. Are you now telling me that I should throw away my perfectly good oil after 3 months when i have not even covered up to 1000 miles? That an engine oil looks black doesn't mean it has gone bad. Some of my friends who use synthetic oil, drive their cars for a year before changing their oil and their connecting rods have not jumped out of their engine blocks just yet. These guys are not poor or broke by any means just that they know better. Abeg make we stop to dey waste money joor. Buy the grade and quality of oil recommended by your manufacturer, and stick to the change interval that is in your manual. They cannot be wrong. Our Tokunbo cars (most over 200,000 miles), stuck to those recommendations and got to us here in one piece. If they were wrong, the tokunbo cars would all be needing engine transplant by the time they get here. |
OP, I heard there is triple cell now. And tell the mech to set the fan at highest speed also. That way, the temp gauge won't even leave the low mark. By the way, you should have listened to Decotech. |
suwas2003:Says who? Canadian tire authorities say 10 years, some tire experts say 6 years, others seven years. They all differ but none ever said four years. |
tboy2k4:If your check engine light is on then do a scan and start from there. However, there are other factors e.g distance driven averagely per day and average speed. If you drive rather short distances and your average speed is low (25mph or less) and you idle extensively in traffic, your MPG will be much lower than the manufacturer stated MPG. I usually use my highway drives to confirm my MPG. City driving especially in cities like Lag and PH crush MPGs. |
Your tires going by the date of manufacture, has not expired. Your tire still has probably another three years of good service to give you. However it may have if it had not been stored properly. 40 Psi is a bit high. check the recommended pressure as suggested by a poster here. It is on your door. FRSC will not condemn a tire made in 2010. |
Did you see the lengthy list Siena gave you up there? That would cost you nothing less than 300k. And there is no guarantee the conversion will work without issues. Just sell the V6, and buy an I4 for peace of mind. |
Op, here are my own questions. 1.Do keke napeps need to have insurance cos they really need it. Those guys are the silliest road users ever. Do the drivers of keke also have to acquire a special drivers license to drive the keke? 2.How are Taxis or cabs assessed when road worthiness certificates are being issued? Cos 90% of them are not road worthy by any standard. 3.Are VIO officials allowed to forcefully enter peoples cars when the drivers are stopped and there is perceived offense? 4.Is it possible for the VIO to have designated and approved vehicle assessment centers where vehicles requiring road worthiness certificates are assessed with approval given or denied based on the assessment parameters. I believe this will go a long way in promoting good driving practices and road manners in this country. (Those taxis will then know they can't drive around bashing everyone and wrecking innocent peoples cars at will. |
Keneking:So the Government built those residential areas on the pipelines? Chisos. We blame the government for every effing thing. We don't and won't accept responsibility ever. No wonder we are so backward. Abi those idiots wey build that house on top or near pipeline no dey aware? |
Where is gazzuzz. That guy na tourism minister. Oya come tell them your record joor. ![]() PH to Abuja. Can't remember the distance but i guess it was about 600 miles or more. PH to Lag 400 miles exactly. |
PAPIJAID:FRSC in Nigeria is reactive and not proactive. They wait until an accident happens before they do something. There are absolutely no road signs on our highways to guide motorists (FRSC should either put them or compel those who should put them to do so and if those responsible fail to do so; sue them). FRSC does not put caution signs on dilapidated roads with deep potholes and at failed bridges or roads which erosion has washed off (Imagine driving for the first time in Nigeria if you are a foreigner, you would think you are driving after the apocalypse. Gulleys and ditches just jump out of nowhere without warning). FRSC should start towing broken down trucks and vehicles out of the road. They can tow them to the hard shoulders or to workshops chosen by the owner of the vehicle while the owner pays a minimal sum for the service ( I have seen broken down trucks and cars parked on roads for months sometimes at blind spots and unsuspecting motorists run into them). The actions listed above will go a long way in making our roads safer and not asking for fire extinguishers or waste baskets and first aid boxes and forcing everyone to install speed limiting devices. |
I don't know if they have any right to check for a tires expiry date. However there is a flaw with checking a tires expiry date. What a manufacturer stamps on a tire is date or week and year of production and never the expiry date. there is no definite time frame established anywhere to use as a yard stick to say a tire has expired though there are recommendations that it should be changed after certain number of years. Some say 7 years, some say 8 while others quote as low as 6 years. On that premise, their evaluation of your tires expiry is flawed. Different grades of tires and makes use different compound in different quantities which either extend their useful lives or reduces them. Storage is also a factor. If ever a road safety officer opens his mouth to tell me that my tires have expired, he had better hope he has enough brains to match my next action. Some of them even drive with bald tires. mtchew. ![]() |
There are husbands everywhere. The problem is these women fail to see them when they are available for the following reasons. At 18, they want to marry 2face. At 22, they want to marry Majid (that Ghanaian actor) At 26, they want to marry Dangotes son At 30, they realize the clock is ticking but think there is still time and lower their standards a bit. An Engineer in a multinational company or a doctor or high flying lawyer with a house and two cars will do At 34, nne no time. They start looking for someone to start life with; even an apprentice who is willing to work hard will do. However most apprentice are ten years their junior and are therefore not interested in them. Abi them wan marry their mama age mate? |
obitee69: ![]() Abeg no loss for Lagos oo. Its in PH. i tot you were in PH. What I will advise you to do is go to a major air condition shop where major ac parts are sold and ask them for their oga. Tell the oga to give you the best AC tech he has and that you want a job that will be done with warranty. |
obitee69:His number is 08035937186. He stays at elekahia. His name is Emma. good luck. |
Chai, all these our AC techs. I recently fixed my Honda City AC which was having similar symptoms as yours. It cools for a while, then stops, then starts again. Firstly, I asked the guy to purge the system, then we refilled to look for leaks. We went as far as checking for leaks even under the dashboard and we found one. it was leaking from a connection in the expansion valve. we got it fixed but the AC Tech guy suggested changing my thermostat to manual. I told him to go and self-service off. My car, my rules. I understand AC workings a bit at least. We fixed everything right back, changing a few o rings that i suspected were getting shot. Refilled the gas and the AC is working till date. My advice is that you look for an experienced Ac Tech, do not go for the cheap guys. Confirm the pressure in the system and make sure it is right. Look for leaks, and fix them if you find them. Test your condenser, expansion valve and pressure switch like Gazzuz mentioned. Also make sure you refill to the right pressure for the system. Don't forget to purge air from the system as well. |
greenhulk:Yes, they made a mistake. Who hasn't? Will he fix the mistake? I think so. Till then, he has done what a lot of entrepreneurs couldn't and wouldn't dare. I am not justifying not having a CD player in a car but it is not the most important thing in a car. if that car is still running after five years or 100,000kms without any mechanical issues, then he would have achieved what was thought impossible in Nigeria. Lets promote Nigeria. Lets support home made. PS, the car has power windows and AC. |
I do not know how much a timing chain job will cost where you are but i will advise you to leave that engine alone for now since the rattle stops immediately after you start the car. If the rattle continues say after about fifteen seconds of starting the car or comes up intermittently while you are driving, then there may be need to fix it. Your camshaft sprocket may be worn as a result of the wrong grade of oil you have been using over time. This rattle is common in camrys as the mileages rack up. When i've parked my camry for close to a month, it rattles briefly at first start but as the oil circulates, the noise stops. It doesn't do that again until i have left it parked for a long time (more than 2 weeks). Your timing chain was designed to last the life of the vehicle and unless it has been harmed significantly (unlikely though) by the grade of oil u have been using, then there is no need for a new one. The price of a new chain (original) was 10,000 Naira in 2013 (when i changed mine). I believe the price wouldn't have changed much since then. |
When newer cars were made without cassette players, no one moaned. CDs are becoming obsolete. face that fact. When was the last time you bought a CD and played it? I can't remember either. I have all my songs on my flash or phone and play them from there. The first Hondas were nothing to write home about in terms of quality. Same goes for so many auto makers out there. Kia anyone. The first Kias that came to Nigeria were rubbish in terms of quality but they got you from point A to B. Gradually they improved. Innoson will improve on its quality and standards. We can crucify him if after a few years he hasn't improved. |
Is your rear brake disc or drum? If it is drum, I am afraid the mechanics may have adjusted it to be too tight and it is now binding. Lift your rear tyres without the handbrakes on and spin them. They should be able to spin freely without much effort. Also diesengage the transmission if ur ride is a rear wheel drive while performing this test. This will let you know if the mechanics did the ajdustments properly after changing ur pads. Mine was once set so tightly that it condemned my rear drums in one month not to mention the horrible gas mileage I got before I figured it out. |

Constantly red lining your engine will surely kill it. There is a reason the manufacturers painted that zone red. You increase the wear and tear in that engine tremendously when u red line. Rally cars and race cars can be red lined for prolonged periods however this leads to frequent engine rebuilds on these cars even with the expensive exotic internals (forged pistons, crankshaft, coated liners, rings and camshafts). These internals in these engines are not what you will find in your regular family sedan. They can withstand the abuse for prolonged periods yet it is not uncommon to see smoked engines in F1 and rally championships where these cars are pushed to their limits. Red lining your engine is dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. Speed limiters built into ECU's help prevent this in most cars. Its even worse if your car has an interference engine. In the event, the piston and valves meet for even a split second when you are red lining, you can kiss that engine good bye. |
And don't go to any mechanic yet. They will perform all manner of surgery on that car of yours. The fuel consumption you are talking about is vague. You will need to provide us the exact miles or kilometers you cover and how many litres of fuel you bought. We cannot deduce that from the full tank and journey description you gave to us. Also tell us if your car is an auto or manual. And scan the car like has been suggested. Post the codes here when you are done. |
I just checked and your timing should be between 8 and 12 degrees after the car has warmed up. best of luck. |
CMGO:With your engine running and the car fully warmed up(this means cooling fan has come on at least twice and temp gauge is somewhere around the middle), your ignition timing should be between 9 and 12 degrees (at least thats what mine is which shouldn't be too different from yours). I will attach a picture of the timing chain tensioner. Your mechanic should inspect the chain guides as well. If they are worn, they would also contribute to your malaise.
|
idiahiseal:Its most likely your stabilizer or linkage. Tell your mechanic to check them out. Its annoying i know but its not really a big deal. |
6ft: |
Its possible your chain is worn. I don't know how possible it is for a 2AZ ecu to work with a 1AZ engine. Are you certain ur rav 4 has a 1AZ engine? Please look at the engine block and see what is written there. Also, download the pdf manual for setting timing on your engine. It will show you the normal length of your chain, how many links separate the camshafts and the postions of the markings on the chains when placed on the crankshaft and cam shafts. It will show you how to ascertain that the timing has been set correctly on your car. You can also do this with a scan tool. When you check live data on your car with a scan tool, it should display your engine timing with ignition on but engine off. My 2AZ shows 5 degrees with engine off and ignition on. Its also possible that the timing chain tensioner which uses oil pressure to function is failing and allowing the chain to slack a lot resulting in the messed up timing. This often happens when mechanics block the oil lines in the tensioner with gasket maker. Make sure this isn't what is happening to you. |
