HeavenlyBang:Second gen started from 2007 I believe. I've seen some with the production date of 2007. I don't know about the performance or mpg of the first generation. |
rationalmind:Not with our fuel and even if he applied all fuel saving techniques available. |
survivex:You will get about 20L/100km. I use one. No check light. And ph traffic is lighter than Lagos traffic. I choose and plan my journeys though to minimise fuel expense. Getting used to it. But you will love it. The handling and acceleration is superb. |
weyreypey:They are not carcinogenic. Benzene is but not xylene and toluene. The rings on the three hydrocarbons are different. I achieved 18.8 mpg on my last trip from abakaliki to ph. I rode alone and didn't put my foot which made me However, I got nice mpg readings without the xylene or octane boosters. I have come to realise that what made the x ping was actually the full load I had on board on my previous journeys. Full load, low octane fuel and heavy foot results to pings. Which now makes sense to me cos Gazzuz mentioned his customers who drive max don't complain about the pings. Around town, the best is get is 13.5 mpg if ph people behave themselves. |
Rubbiish:Rubbish. 12mpg in the city. You will be a popular customer at filling stations. OP, what did you go for? 08 elantra, accent, Kia Rio and cerato, Kia soul, 010 Honda city or fit are great buys. Also look out for 08 Toyota echo. You won't go wrong with these cars and they are not robber magnets yet. |
I suspect you have a partially blocked exhaust. That's my guess oo. |
GAZZUZZ:Will do. |
Hi folks, I'm in need of a 2009 Kia cerrato auto gearbox. Car is the Dana spec Kia bought brand new in Nigeria. The cerrato had a minor accident which affected the transmission hose causing fluid leak and subsequent demise of the original auto gear box. You can drop your quotes here or send me pm. Thanks. HeavenlyBang:Abet ask am. Still regurgitating old wives tales. |
feelme3:72 litres from Lagos to onitsha is a bit high for a v6 sedan. But not too bad. An i4 of similar size will do it with less than 50 liters. That's a difference of 22 liters. If OP prefers power to Fe, then v6 is the way to go. But I must admit that Nissan's are not known for their reliability. |
It is simply shoping how long your friend has been driving. If you press the trip button again it will show you other information such as fuel efficiency, range to be covered on available fuel, distance driven etc. It's nothing to worry about. Your friend should read his car manual. |
You will enjoy it during the day but struggle with it at night. It won't be easy. Hopefully you get used to it before you bash someone in your blind spot |
aylagos:Good choice |
Op, what did you decide? I'd never swap the 08 MDX for an 08 Lexus 350. The mdx is better in everything, from offroading to handling, styling and speed. The rx is marginally better in fuel economy. Did you get the MDX? |
cmon:Not the 08 MDX. I'm yet to see one that is in bad shape |
Here is what I think. That particular cylinder developed a hot spot, probably on a plug which lead to detonation. This detonation created pits on the cylinder head. Each time plugs are changed, the symptom goes away until more materials are deposited from the pit on the new plug and the cycle starts all over again. Eventually, the detonation (preignition) melts the top of the piston. What I don't get is what broke off the valve. |
HRtechnique:Electrical issues. The rains bring up issues that ordinarily wouldn't manifest. Some also have defective wipers. I know a friends car that wouldn't accelerate past 20 km/hr anytime it rains and its a manual for that matter. He sold off the car before we could even figure out the problem during the dry season. ![]() |
alphaNomega:You lie |
HeavenlyBang:Thanks for this. |
HeavenlyBang:Seen. I will do one liter at a time. Cos adding just 0.5 liter and the johnsen STP octane booster (N1.5k) stopped the pinging. I will do that when I get back. To the peeps wondering how much damage xylene and toluene will do to fuel lines. Relax, premium fuel contains a higher percentage of toluene and xylene. The pms in your car already contains a good portion of xylene and toluene. That is what boosts the octane rating. Even alcohol boosts octane rating. alcohol has a worse effect on fuel lines than xylene and toluene. Fuel lines are designed to resist the effects of toluene and toluene and in Europe and USA where they have e85 PMS which is 15% alcohol, their fuel limes would have melted off. Although cars whose fuel limes and engines were not designed to handle e85 fuel will have a sticker telling you not to pour it in. |
Wash the engine thoroughly. Then hunt for the source of the oil leak. Your oil is leaking out from either the cooler hose or one of the gaskets. I seriously suspect the valve cover gasket. |
HeavenlyBang:The guy could be right. I use that product advertised by aunty radu and the ping disappears instantly but its expensive. I tried the cheap route once end route to Enugu and I nearly wept. I used the STP product. I ended up needing three of it to stop the pings. Each cost 1500. That's 4500 worth for a full tank. I was down to almost half tank when I added the last one. My heart was in my mouth along the stretch between isuochi and nnpc filling station at Enugu. I added the last one at nnpc and drove to Abakaliki without any more drama. Mind, the stretch between isuochi and that nnpc mega station is mostly uphill and car was loaded. Car is a second gen MDX. |
Readonee35L:I guess he was referring to me. I have Ben travelling quite a bit and to be honest, a full tank of fuel requires octane booster of about 7k to avoid the pings on long journeys. Now if I travel every weekend and use up two tanks of fuel for to and fro, that's about 14k of octane boosters in one weekend. Multiply that by four and you see why it could easily add up to 40k and more. To reduce the expense and preserve my engine, I opted or a cheaper alternative which is to use xylene. So far so good. I am well aware that it doesn't have the lubricants in normal pms but I make up for that by adding fuel treatment at each fillip. Xylene is 2k a liter and I bought 25liters. I only use 1/2 a liter to treat a full tank and I don't get any pings with just 1/2 a liter. So far so good. I will follow soperrescues guideline on how to mix it up. Trust me, that ping can be infuriating. Knowing you can't stomp on the pedal in anger when a gtr comes right beside you can do your head in. ![]() I'd be the first on the queue if any filling station decides to sell premium fuel. These crap fuel are really ruining engines. A lot of people don't even know when their engine is pinging. They just drive on and on and on. |
I guess the reason is higher average speeds. During the rainy season, there are more gridlock and people generally drive slower cos of bad and uneven roads. And roads are worse during the rainy season. That's a guess sha. The only other reason I can think of is lower relative humidity during the dry season. I wonder how that affects what goes on in the engine. |
fotodaddy:What was the name of the thinner you helped nkc purchase? I'd love to know. |
That was quick. ![]() |
Readonee35L:Nwaneni, he will enjoy the car if he is in Lagos. Last last him go dey cross border once in a while go buy premium fuel for Ghana as some Lagos guys do. Or he will run octane boosters in the car. If not a corolla will pass you when the pings start at 3k rpm. Readone35L, abeg school the guy. I have bought a gallon of xylene for mixing my fuel after my last sojourn to the east. Octane boosters are more expensive, so I figured I'd mix a bit of xylene to boost the octane. Still waiting on Sooperrescue to give the formula for making in-house octane boosters. ![]() Chai, I won't forget the look the corolla guy gave me when he passed me and my x was pinging while struggling to keep up. It was humiliating. Make I catch that corolla again. |
kingreign:Was about to point out the same too. At those compressions, premium fuel will be a must. We are going to have a lot of failed engines when they eventually get here. |
Really?
|
3kay945:Trust me, some people still mess up something as easy as topping off engine oil and water in a car. I know two people who have ruined their engines performing these two activities. One had his engine burn and the other engine suffered overheat and seized engine. |

) And this isn't a one time experience. I wouldn't know if that's gulping too much fuel but for me it's an OK deal compared to the stress of commercial bus.
