radautoworks:Sounds nice |
Gazuzz:Those engines fail even without overheating. I've been to a Kia dealership with over 8 of them parked up because the engines blew up. Some with connecting rods piercing out of the block. The dealership noted that they have too many of them being worked on and some are on a waiting list. Nightmare of an engine |
erico2k2:By small car I mean the E90 SNF cars that weigh as such like the corollas and Camry's. As soon as you go to the big leagues, SUVs and cuvs or even the very heavy sedans like the Lexus LS or BMW 7 series, you are better off with a diesel engine. The petrol engines on these cars are very thirsty. A friend has the e90 1.8 liter diesel engine. He can cover 900 kilometers on one tank and he has a heavy foot. Bimmer has some very nice diesel engines. |
DonnyE:Just seeing this but I hope you didn't buy that jetta as a first car. You and rewire go be paddy |
weyreypey:If you drive a smaller car, yes it doesn't make sense to think about diesels. However, that is not the case if you own a v6 or v8 suv. Those are thirsty. Those get better mileage when powered by a diesel engine. A diesel BMW x5 gets better mpg than its petrol counterparts. And you can drive the diesels hard without regards for mpg as they deliver their power at the lower rev bands. |
Ismaxtr3:They are right. Honda makes great engines but not SK great transmissions. The engines will outlast the transmissions. Its often a miracle in the automotive circle to see a Honda transmission hit the 250k Mile mark without needing a rebuild or replacement |
dannybrasky:See finishing. Danny abeg remind me never to cross you.

If you think the timing was a bit off, that's your perception. If you want to view the thread objectively and contribute rationally, that would be more than welcome. Having said this, I will share three experiences. 1. Toyota corolla 03. Car was bought by younger brother years ago in Lagos. At this point, none of us had any experience buying tokunbo cars. He paid for the cheapest he could afford. It was getting rather late so he couldn't do proper inspections. The mechanic he went with tested the engine and gears and both checked out. Test drive was okay as car performed well. He paid and drove the corolla down to the east. The first signs of problem was she. He stopped at Benin to refuel. His vehicle couldn't take more than 25 liters as fuel was leaking from the tank. He managed car home. Second sign was when we tried to swap the iron rims for alloys. Bros, na war to remove those wheel nuts. It was even more challenging to change out the brake pads and lining. What was supposed to be a 4 hour job turned to a 2 days job. The truth surfaced when we went to fix the leaking fuel tank. The panel beater told us plainly that the entire bottom would need to be repanned and it was going to take a lon while. After exploring his options, bros decided to drive the car like that afterall 25 liters is more than enough fuel for a corolla. Now here is where it got interesting. On a trip to cross river, he entered a pot hole and the rear axle pulled off from the bottom of the car, threw the car into a spin. The car stayed on the road and there was no accident as there was no car coming in front or behind him. Could have been worse. This was in the middle of nowhere and a bit late. He roughed the night out in the car as no one agreed to stop to help him. The next day a bike man helped him call a tow truck and towed him back home. Car spent two weeks at the panel beaters and painters. The entire bottom was repanned and coated with tar. Because the car was towed with the rear up an the front on the ground, his transmission went bust and he spent a good chunk of money sourcing another. Car never remained the same again. Six months later in the village, same rear axle nearly tore off again in awka. This time it was spotted early. Another round of welding and plating saved the day. Couple of days later the welded spot started tearing up again. This time around, a thicker plate (checkered plate 6mm) was used to replate the affected sections and a decision was made there and then to sell the car. Car was sold at half the value it was bought (only because its a corolla) just two years after it was purchased. A lot could have gone wrong in that accident. A vin check while sourcing for the gear revealed car was shipped from Canada. (No wonder it was cheap). 2nd experience is my own car. Bought from Massachusetts. Car is rusted but not too badly. I've applied coatings to prolong the life of the chassis but I know its on borrowed time but its not as bad as the corolla above. The corolla was a rust bucket. I only realised why the car was cheaper than is usually gotten after I took delivery. 3rd experience was a Mazda cx-9 I helped someone who liked the deal with my car. At this point I didn't know Massachusetts was amongst the region in us that salted their roads. I also got a old deal for him. So when both cars came in and I saw the rust, I did a bit of checking and realised why they were cheap. It will be easier to replace a faulty engine or transmission than to repair rusted out chassis (if it doesn't break on you somewhere on a lonely highway) I've also seen some Canadian cars without rust. Some had very little rust. Its all relative so before you buy a car from areas or regions that salt their roads, check thoroughly for rust. My 2 cents. |
radautoworks:No thank you. We want our engine oil. Or we go to Dru. ![]() |
Angelfrost:Name the civilized country. Name one and I will give you 20 where trucks of even bigger proportions drive around on highways and interstates during the day. |
MadCow1:Finally someone thinks like me. We have poorly designed roads, roads without markings and signs, crazy drivers who shouldnt be behind the wheels in the first place and people are here blaming dangote? |
MotorGuru:Fuses checked out okay. Poured oil into the plug hole and fried turning over the engine. Engine refused to turn over meaning its got good compression. Poured fuel into air filter, connected battery to jump starter and cranked engine. Well after ten minutes of cranking with breaks in between, engjne finally sputtered to life. The smoke from the exhaust was hilarious. I tot for a second that the car was on fire. ![]() All is well now. Just couldn't understand why it refused to start in the first place. |
Honda city 2007 Auto with cvt gear. Issue. Car has been parked for over a month. Prior to parking, car had no issue. Tried to start car two days ago but realised the battery was flat. Tried to jump-start. Car started, ran for about 10 seconds and went off. All efforts to restart proved abortive. Bought another battery and tried again but car won't start. No check engine light. Replaced all coils and plugs. There is spark on all plugs when tested. Fuel pump hums as should and fuel flowed out of the fuel line when opened. Fuel pressure okay as per what I saw. The replacement plugs got wet after periods of cranking and were dried and brushed clean and reinstalled. Hand held scanner showed the rpm to be about 200rpm during cranking. I don't know what else to do. I have called a mechanic who said that there may be low compression. This engine has 95000km on the odo. Is this possible at this mileage? What should I look out for? |
weyreypey:Lol. Evils |
NextGovernor:Time for a new engine then. And change your mechanic. If he can't change gasket and overhaul a small Kia Rio engine, he should be restricted to changing just engine oil and filter. |
radautoworks:Next time, I will ask for "last price". ![]() |

OgaKazeem:You lie. Why do you think mercs are said to be unreliable? Cos after the 100k mile mark when the warranty is over, almost everything goes haywire. How many modern 01 to date mercs make it to the 300k mile mark before they end up in the butchers yard? Meanwhile the Toyota and Lexus are seen everywhere strutting their stuff. trouble sweet oo |
weyreypey:By all means please do. Pray a friend doesn't give the ride to a kazeem in your absence. I like the b6 a4 but I don't like the problems that come with it. ![]() |
Aunty Radu. Was at the shop today. Incidentally, it was just a 10 minute walk from where I am staying presently in Lekki. Heard you were away. Bought some of the things I needed. Nice outfit you guys have here. I no get discount oo and as Igbo man, that one pain me small. ![]() |
Volkswagen is not for faint hearted. Wouldn't ever advise anyone to buy it as a first car. It's not Kazeem friendly. Regardless of what anyone tells you, 99.5% of our mechanics are Kazeems. The tools to diagnose, install and update modern (05 and above) Volkswagens are not readily available in Nigeria. They are not inherently bad cars buy we do not have the expertise and resources to fix them and there lies the problem.. I wish op the best sha but it's going to be a long road to recovery. I hope it doesn't end with the car having a carburetor engine or being butchered in owode |
GAZZUZZ:Does not qualify for my website. ![]() |

I need the following and will be coming into Lagos shortly to pick them up. 1. Oil filter for extended oil change (2 pieces) 2. Lucas transmission fix or lubeguard doctor tranny. (one can of any) 3. 5w-20 synthetic oil (5 liters) 4. Valve clearance check and fix if out of spec (08 mdx) 5. Machining of warped front rotors. |
This is what you should do 1. Either buy a cheap blue tooth scanner (5k) or pay someone with a scanner to ride with you (10k) 2. Drive the car around and monitor the live feed for the coolant temperature sensor 3. Watch if the temperature rises and falls as it should with each fan cycle. 4. You can drive with or without the ac but I suggest you mimic your daily driving setting which triggers this fan behaviour you are worried about. 5. When you come to a stop, take note of the temperature before switching off the engine. 6. If your temp is above 105 degrees, you may have a defective radiator cap or a partially closed thermostat. 7. If it's below 90 and your fan is still spinning, you may have a sticking relay. My two cents. I experienced no 6 on my Skoda and no 7 on my mdx. A small tap on the relay controlling the fan turned it off. It has only ever done it again once in the last four months but I plan to replace the relay when it happens again. |
adanny01:Supported. I have a donor car. |
GAZZUZZ:seen. Will do something. Lost my dad last year and death didn't even give me a chance to try to treat him. Princetom1, We are with you and God will see you through this. |
DonnyE:The question wasn't directed at me but I will tell you this, Honda makes very good engines but are still teething when it comes to transmissions. They make some terrible and problematic auto transmissions. Manual transmissions are bullet proof. If you are not averse to deign manual, get any Honda of your choice with a manual transmissions. You get to enjoy the best Honda has to offer. |
The 1st and 2nd generation Crvs are okay. Be careful when buying Nigerian used. You can also consider Kia soul (high ground clearance and good fuel economy). Hyundai Tucson is also good but won't set the pad racing. Since fuel economy is top of your list, then I'm sure you wouldn't be racing the car then. If you stay in Lagos, you may consider the Mitsubishi out lander. The highlander with 4 cylinder holds its own in fuel economy. Used to drive an uncles 09 model then in lag and it was surprisingly economical with fuel. Aura will not give you what you want in terms of fuel economy and the 1st model had transmission issues and radiator issues where it mixes coolant and trans fluid. In all, go with a very competent mechanic to inspect the car thoroughly before purchasing. |
bixton:Those are the views of persons who don't know any better. Science has told you with demonstration (video evidence), that lightning can't set a car on fire. That car was zapped several times and far longer than any lighting occurrence would. With a live human inside. Do you think Top Gear or the German engineers would have tried it if they were not 100% sure? Or you take the opinions or fifth grade "scientists" over that of seasoned and established researchers? You can believe what you like. It's your choice. |
