erico2k2: So in ur opinion it is safe to say that we are not yet prepared for when shyte hits the fan so if 5 people need ventilators what hapens? Obviously we have hundreds of ventilators across Nigeria... But won’t be enough if we have thousands of extreme cases (remember less than 10% of positive cases will be extreme). That’s the same situation that nations like the US, Italy and Spain has found themselves... Accordingly, what we are aiming for is to PREVENT a massive surge of infections - hence lockdown, isolation and social distancing. Greatest hope is that these facilities are NEVER used... But prudence is to plan for the worst while working (and hoping) for the best. Good luck to us all. PS: Btw, NASENI has started the local manufacture of ventilators in Nigeria. > |

ERockson: You mean this centre is of international standard by you comparing it with NYC where they presently recording over a thousand deaths a day. Even if a centre in the New York looks like this, it is because they've been overwhelmed by the virus they didn't start like this. We didn’t start like this either... Kano has an Infectious Disease Hospital as does Lagos at Yaba, Abuja and several other states. Don’t forget that we have experience with infectious diseases such as Lassa Fever... Accordingly, Unilag has a course in infectious disease control and prevention (curricula by the US CDC). What Nigeria has done BETTER than NYC in this instance. Is that we didn’t wait to get overwhelmed before starting to put these extra capacity in place. The hope is that we will NEVER get to actually use these facilities... But the smart thing is to prepare for the worst, while working and hoping for the best. Good luck to us all. > |

Vyolet: It will keep spreading in Lagos because Lagosians are not complying by the stay at home or the social distancing rules. Those that have not done exercises in 10years all took to the main roads to show off. I've never seen a people so stupid, mtchew. Of course, Lagos will be a natural viral epicentre... Lagos is an estimated 10%+ of Nigeria's population, crammed into 0.4% of its landmass.. It is also a point of entry by air, land and sea, and a magnet for people from all across Nigeria, West Africa and beyond. The GOOD thing about Lagos is that many more people are getting tested (with 3 labs) and have access to better care... Meanwhile, for all we know, without an adequate testing regime, this virus is asymptomatically spreading like wildfire outside of Lagos. Good luck to us all. > |

kenzosky: This too shall pass, meanwhile, in other news, a 15-member medical team from China has arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, despite the NMA warnings/protest. It's no-longer a hidden truth that Nigerian leaders and top politicians are alergic to been checked and treated by Nigerian trained doctors in Nigeria under-equipped hospitals and clinics, and since they can no longer travel to the West for medical treatment or check- up, they decided to use tax-payers money to import anyone (doctors) with White or yellow skin as an alternative to treat any one of them that's alredy down with the virus or will be down with it. Despite the NMA warnings/protest against inviting foreign doctors, they still went ahead and do whatever pleases them by brushing NMA warnings aside like it's a warning coming from rabbits catchers association, showing high level of Public disrespect for the NMA for all Nigerians to see. This pandemic should be an eye opener for all well meaning Nigerians, we don't have leaders, all we have are blockheads, nincompoops, buffoons, dolts, Ignoramus, cretins, slowpokes and ninny chump entities we called leaders, Revolution will start during this pandemic, mark my words These doctors are NOT being imported using "tax-payers money"... Not just because most Nigerians do NOT pay taxes.... They are coming (together with equipment, kits, PPE, etc.) as part of CCECC's CSR initiative. It is NOT a FG program. > |

Tissaia: There is an agenda afoot to ingrain socialist practices into our society by using this virus to their advantage. I believe that smart people will sort this out and we will return to work, and the economy will recover. Just stop listening to the fear mongers. I am not sure yet which side NCDC is on... Ugh. “We should continue to panic and live in fear until no one is employed and every business is shut down. That way people will be forced into socialism and we can finally kiss Capitalism goodbye.” That’s what they want. I’m not going to live in a apocalypse for 18 weeks!!! There won’t be a civil Nigeria as we know it by then. It would be a lawless nightmare!!! I’ll take my chances with coronavirus! There is no cure for a virus. Stop running from big foot and unicorns. Get everything back together in one week. This " flu" incubation period is almost a month. Then it starts over when a new infection occurs. We are running from germs. I say we stop running and find the people responsible for opening Pandora's box. Wait till you see the uprising against the vaccine it will be millions. There should be detailed, anonymized information about every case that we can analyze. Bro that's irrelevant... Covid-19 does not check account balances. But I can tell you who is getting tested... This is considering the fact that recovery from the disease doesn't confer enough immunity to prevent reinfection It does in the immediate term... saajus: Having 10 bed ICU ward is not a problem. Checking what is looming, 10bed ICU is as good as nothing. Maybe Kano too may have 2 or 3. God forbid if Lagos has a full breakout like New York, even 10k ventilators won't be enough. Lagos is 22m population, New York is 20 million. 6% of COVID-19 patients get to critical stage that requires ventilators. Only 14% of that 6% will survive. God forbid if Lagos has 100k cases, 6k ventilators will be need needed. The 10beds will be given to who is who. I pray to God that we don't get to that level before the cure is developed. It’s a 10-bed ICU in just ONE center (out of many nationwide)... Nonetheless, you cannot extrapolate wholesale the impact on NYC to Nigeria. In Nigeria, very few (about 4 in Lagos) cases has been people over 60 years, while in NYC 72% are over 50 with 77% of fatalities over 70 years. The elderly profile of the NYC patients means they are more likely to be extreme cases (principally because elderly people are most likely to have other underlying ailments or have previously suffered other serious illnesses and/or compromised or weaker immune systems and less healthy respiratory systems) and thus more likely to need ventilators and ICU care. Accordingly, of the cases in Nigeria thus far, reportedly less than 1% have needed extreme care. Of course, Nigeria is neither the US nor even NYC, so we have to be realistic enough (even if angry about it) to acknowledge that we are not as well-resourced nor as well-prepared as they are (and that’s relative as the US and NYC has been shown to woefully unprepared). Having said that, however, the most dangerous characteristic of Covid-19 thus far has been the rapidity of infection. That characteristic enables to overwhelm the healthcare system, however advanced. Accordingly, our best hope is to break the chain of infection (through basic hygiene, testing, contact tracing, isolation, social distancing, etc.), flatten the curve of infection (so, eg, instead of 2000 cases in day, there are 2000 cases in 2 weeks), and end up with numbers that our rickety healthcare system can try to manage. There’s no silver bullet - not even ventilators. Good luck to us all. > |

ERockson: Use your brain as well, Can they treat Coronavirus in that centre, What will you call the building given to the government by former president Olusegun Obasanjo? Isolation centre where Coronavirus patient can get treated? Well, This is for people not yet tested but suspected to have had contact with the Coronavirus patients and From amongst them, you will definitely find some people that will show the symptoms of the virus in the process and spread it. There should be enough space use your brain guy No, dude, you are describing a quarantine center... Isolation centers are for people who have tested POSITIVE - whether or not they show symptoms... The idea is to isolate them from the general population, so that they do not infect their families/communities. > |

southpole: Those treated and tested negative for covid-19 are released immediately not kept in the same isolation centers. The kano isolation center is still under construction and would be well ventilated and installed with other necessary equipments when it becomes operational moreso that the people their know the high temperature in Kano. Patients are NOT removed from Isolation Centers immediately they test negative... First, because there’s a possibility there will be still some viral residues in their system as their immune systems may fluctuate up and down depending on basic things like how well they slept, which is why sometimes there are positive results after someone in treatment has tested negative. Accordingly, patients are only released after 2 consecutive negative tests about 2 or 3 days apart. Nonetheless, there’s no danger of external infection or re-infection at that point because such patient’s immune response is strong enough at that point to reject the virus. > |

BreconHills: You have a point. However the degree of viral.load may differ. Severity may differ. I am not a doctor but I believe they should have focused less on the number of beds and more on the process/science. The only record we are chasing is zero infections.
I actually believe that the ward configuration will change after the photo op to show graduation from entry of the case to exit of the case.
But like I said I am no doctor. I am sure they are well advised. Well done Dangote, well done Kano. The “severity” is immaterial.... Because there are no cases of serial infections or re-infections. Extreme cases will be in ICU.... While mild and asymptomatic cases will be ‘managed’ in isolation wards. > |

If a COVID-19 case gets to a ventilator, the chance of survival is 14% You do not need ICUs in every isolation center...
